The Brakian Gambit - Chapter One
#2 of The Brakian Gambit
Well this took a while. I went through about three drafts of the chapter before I finally got to this. Then I hit a few points where I had no idea how to proceed. Mostly the combat part. Been a while since I wrote one and it's... not as good as it could be or should be. Ground combat for me, I've noticed, is generally tougher to write. But next chapter should be interesting.
This chapter picks up a few days after the prologue, introduces the new persistent characters for the story, and get rolling toward the most important aspects of the story.
Chapter One
Omniwatch Station
March 10, 2550 CE
Situated in orbit with a space elevator running up to it, and back down to the surface of course, Omniwatch Station was named for the corporation that owns it and what is. Using a relay of sensors across the system all linked to the station's command center, the station has an all seeing eye upon the Chara system. While not the primary commercial station, due to more of a military focus, it was still a trade hub and, for Omniwatch employees, their first stop on arrival.
"Have I ever told you how much I hate reassignments?" A light grey, almost white, Tesgnov said as she stepped off the ship that brought her to the station. The small feline was only 30 years old, and stood five feet and five inches tall. While most Tesgnov rarely get into positions of power, the black Omniwatch officer's uniform with Lieutenant insignias and blue beret she was wearing was sign enough of high status in the corporation. On her face she had a few visible scars, also visibly tried to be covered. Her red eyes were probably the only striking feature, but only because it was unusual.
The human that stepped off with her was in a dark blue Omniwatch naval uniform, similar in style to the feline's, just blue instead of black. Where the cat's was unmarked in terms of rank, the officer's had the insignia of captain. She had her hair pulled back into a ponytail, as it was the only way she could keep the length and still look professional, and had blue eyes. Like the cat, she had several scars, but no means to hide them, not that she wanted to. "Yeah, well, I had to bring you here. The Ambassador was reassigned here of all places."
Situated in space, and too large to dock with Omniwatch Station due to its low orbit over Braka, the ODV Ambassador was the largest ship in known space and the lead ship of the Ambassador Class Dreadnoughts. The one kilometer warship was rarely deployed outside of Sol, Tau Ceti, and Alpha Centauri and was the cornerstone of Omniwatch's gunboat diplomacy when things started to get really bad.
With a small laugh, the cat said, "Cozy assignment. Quit complaining."
The two approached the Customs checkpoint at the station lobby. It served as arrivals and departures, though only the ones arriving were searched and went through the whole system. The cat removed her satchel and set it on the scanner then stepped through the energy field, a quick scan of her person setting off a firearm alarm. One of the security officers approached her. The shoulder holster was rather obvious, and she was carrying an antique .44 revolver. The officer only nodded after noticing the uniform.
She turned left and approached the customs desk, where the grey uniformed customs officer nodded to her with a smile and gave a typical greeting. Behind her, her satchel set off another alarm, which caused an ear to flick as she picked it up. "Welcome to Braka ma'am. Can I see your ID please?" The officer said, ignoring the alert behind them, knowing the officer would handle it.
Without an argument she produced her ID from her wallet, the blue and silver ID unique in its design. When most people coming through Omniwatch station weren't that high level, the customs officer was actually surprised. He made a few notes on his computer, asking no further questions, knowing he wouldn't get any answers. A quick scan of the ID followed for the records, then he printed out arrivals papers and gave the ID back.
"Welcome aboard Miss Klara Trovato." The customs officer said.
Klara said nothing as she took her papers from the desk and proceeded through Customs. The captain was behind her, and as soon as Klara stepped away she stepped up to the desk and the customs officer went through their usual spiel again. Seeing her bag being searched, as per protocol, Klara walked up to the officer in question. On the table was her spare weapon; an energy pistol that she had kept for some time. It was old, almost antique, but she never left her postings without it.
"I hope that's not going to be a problem?" Klara asked as she motioned toward the pistol.
The human officer was taken off guard for just a moment and looked up at her. "Not at all ma'am. Merely a formality." In the same fashion he had removed it, the guard placed everything back into the satchel, buckled it, and then handed it back to Klara. "Thank you ma'am. I hope you have a safe stay."
'You're not the only one.' Klara thought as she took the satchel back with a smile and a light nod. By now the captain had stepped out, and Klara caught the customs officer say, "Welcome aboard Captain Luca Trovato" and she looked over her shoulder at her sister walking toward her. Klara removed her cigar case from one of the outer pockets of the satchel, removed one, and lit it all before Luca got to her, mostly because Luca was caught up in getting her bag back from the officer.
The Trovato family was a bit unusual in its makeup. At least in the recent generation, Klara and Luca were stepsisters. Frowned upon, largely, their mother and father, respectively, had married. Luca's father being a wealthy human executive running his own, small corporation and Klara's mother being a Tesgnov with little to her name. At least among Luca's biological family, they were less than pleased with the choice of wife simply due to the species difference. Regardless, Klara and Luca were very close, for that reason. Both were together when they were young and grew up with the species divide.
"So, I guess you have work to do huh?" Luca asked as the two started walking into the station. "Never a slow day for corporate officials."
Klara glanced at her watch, a gift from her former commanding officer, before responding. "Yeah... I think I am going to have to report in and find out what the hell is going on." She said. There was a slight pause before she turned off to head her own way, and she stopped. Luca stopped as well. "You'll be in the bar?" Klara asked with a smile.
"Where else would be I be?" Luca asked with her own smile.
"You? Good point. You never do anything productive." Klara said with a little laugh as she gave Luca a quick hug. "I'll be back shortly enough I think."
"I'll be drunk probably." Luca said as the two parted, heading to different sections of the station.
Luca of course went directly to the station bar on the upper, public areas of the space station. Klara took the lifts at the center of the station into the Omniwatch special offices deeper in the space station. Omniwatch Station was set up to house the command center at the center of the station, with varying offices and meeting areas around that as well as station barracks. Klara's destination was deeper though. As a relatively high level member of Omniwatch's very broadly titled Special Protection division, she had to deal with different people with a not so well defined chain of command in places.
The lift took a few minutes, which Klara spent smoking her cigar patiently while going through her datapad for information she needed. Her reassignment from Tau Ceti was unusual. She had a semi-permanent posting there, a nice office, a secondary residence on the colony. Despite it being an Internal Affairs matter, she was also aware of the situation on Braka since Epsilon was called some time ago. She knew nothing more, of course, other than the contracts were terminated. If she had to guess though, her temporary reassignment was due to this.
With a light ping, the lift came to a stop. There was no one waiting to board, and Klara stepped into the hall. Unlike the well-lit, light metal halls of the station above, the halls down below took on a darker appearance, but remained well lit. These areas were meant to be obviously cheap but effective whereas the ones above needed to look good to keep traders and other people flowing through the station. Klara had been to the station only one time before, and the design in the lower levels were rather easy to follow.
She made a left turn from the lift and followed the hall down a distance, paying attention to the name plates on the walls next to the doors. Her contact on the station was Amin Samih, the Captain of Special Protection for the Chara system. In Tau Ceti, Klara was a Lieutenant and acted under the Captain. Each system had one, usually with two to four lieutenants under them depending on the size of the system and the traffic. Tau Ceti had one - Klara - while Sol, Epsilon Eridani, and Alpha Centauri all had four. Under those there were a number of protection agents assigned to the lieutenant.
Amin's door was near the end of the hall, and Klara hit the button to ring the office. There was a click from the door as the bolts released and the door opened for her. She walked into the office and Amin, a human of course, greeted her with a nod and motioned to one of the chairs in front of his desk. Klara sat down and wrapped her tail around, setting it in her lap for the time being as Amin finished some paperwork. It went on for several minutes before he filed it away and looked up at Klara.
In those few minutes, Klara was able to size him up a bit. She last saw him several years ago when her arrival at Chara was part of a rotation through key worlds that Omniwatch operates on. Back then, he looked much younger, and he was just a Lieutenant at that. He had several more scars, more grey hair, and just looked tired and old despite being no more than 45. Klara knew that much about his age. If she had to guess, with what little she knew of him to begin with, he seemed to be the sort that excelled in command roles, but hated it. Especially when just an over glorified administrator.
"Welcome to Chara, Lieutenant." Amin said. "I am sure you're wondering what you're here for." He opened a drawer and pulled out a folder, setting it on the desk and sliding it to Klara. She picked it up and went through the papers within. It was all things she already knew, so she was skimming through things she hadn't seen as well as looking over a few pictures that she didn't see before. "The issue at the facility has caught flak from the Brakian government. We've been pulling several of our specialists here the last few days, because it seems we'll be needing to protect facilities on the surface. At present, the government is voting on whether or not to suspend corporate investments. We'll be manipulating the vote as best we can, but it may still pass, and then the military will move on our facilities."
The pictures that Klara was going through shows quite a few bodies of the people that fought against the leadership at the mining facility, there were body counts, maps with markings of locations, and so on. All of this was new to her, but did serve to drive home the gravity of the situation. The body count was estimated at 65 security, supervisors, and managers dead, and well over 500 dead workers; a total workforce loss. Really the numbers didn't concern her, it was the fact an entire mine rose up against the managers over a pay hardly lower than anything that was earned elsewhere in Omniwatch mining operations.
Still flipping through the file, Klara finally asked, "So where do I fit into this?"
"You'll be leading a small team." Amin said. "The government won't dare move on the Terran Quarter without the graces of the Alliance, and the Alliance won't give them the right. We have facilities outside the Quarter though and we need to protect those. We own the land, but it's still Brakian territory because the Alliance isn't backing our claims to push sovereignty."
Klara closed the folder and put it back on the desk. The tip of her tail was thumping a bit against her leg. It was some actual action rather than playing bodyguard for Omniwatch and other corporate representatives in Tau Ceti. That was something she was looking forward to. "So I guess I am deploying shortly?"
"We'll be waiting on the result of the vote, which should come in a day or two, but you'll be at the regional headquarters and meeting with your team." Amin said. "You're one of the two lieutenants assigned to this, and you'll have four agents under you. There's a shuttle at the arrivals ring that'll take you down to the surface." He flipped through a few papers on the desk. "The Ambassador is in system, yes?"
"Just arrived. Sister is the captain, I arrived with her." Klara said.
"Excellent. We may need it. You're dismissed lieutenant." Amin said with a nod. He looked her over and noted the satchel she was carrying. "Is that all you brought?" Klara only nodded to the question. "I'll have additional uniforms sent down for you. We have your sizes; easy enough to get you replacements."
"Thank you sir." Klara said as she stood up.
Amin waved her away. "Make sure this works. You and the other lieutenant are reporting to me. Possibly CR Guntram."
Klara knew of the Chief Representative. He had odd methods, but he usually had the best interests of the corporation in mind. Something told her that this all his plan, and she wondered what the real end goal was. As she left the office, Klara knew this was going to be a long assignment. Tesgnov were rare on Braka, and Brakians tended not to like them. Granted that feeling was quite mutual.
It was slightly more than what humans would laugh at and call cats and dogs. Tesgnov were generally fit for duties and more than Brakians. Enhanced eyesight and hearing over that of the average human as well as claws that were fully capable of use in self-defense - or offense - typically outweighed the heightened sense of smell that Brakians had. Despite the Brakians being relatively close, technologically, to the Alliance and the Tesgnov homeworld being similar to Earth's industrial age, the preferential treatment to the Tesgnov has added a newfound hate from the species toward the Tesgnov. Klara didn't care.
Unlike many of her species within Omniwatch, Klara attributed at least some of her success up the corporate hierarchy simply because she wasn't the typical Tesgnov. She was born on Mars, and her mother was from Sol anyway. Thus, she acted mostly like a human. Even if the Alliance accepted both Brakians and Tesgnov, and Omniwatch offered upward mobility if they were capable, Klara still disliked most of both of the species. Brakians were too lost in clan ties and Tesgnov were stagnating before the arrival of humanity to get them moving and advancing again.
She never promised she'd do so before departing, but Klara returned to the upper levels of the station and spoke to Luca for a bit about the assignment. Klara gave Luca a quick goodbye and headed for her shuttle to the surface. The _Ambassador's_shuttle was still docked and the shuttle to the surface was elsewhere on the arrivals and departures lobby. The shuttle was empty when she arrived, and no one else showed up. The pilot closed the doors, detached from the station, and began the slow descent into the atmosphere of Braka.
Chara II
Terran Quarter
Klara's shuttle set down at the spaceport on Braka's surface and she was rushed through the port to an Omniwatch motorcade that was waiting on her. The motorcade was just a luxury car and a motorcycle at the front and back. Since the incident at the mine, tensions have been rising on Braka and the extra protection was mandated for all high level Omniwatch personnel. Even if Klara was fully capable of protecting herself, she didn't mind an extra pair of guns protecting her.
For the most part, the ride was uneventful. Once the motorcade had to exit the Terran Quarter, however, things changed for the vehicles. Omniwatch Regional Headquarters had set up in the Downtown area of Landgate. With the rising tensions, it was quite evident why that wasn't such a good idea. The more militant Brakians had armed themselves, either with police assistance or from the relatively lax firearm laws on the planet.
Given her vehicle had an Omniwatch flag on it, with a pair of Omniwatch patrol vehicles escorting it, the looks from some of the Brakians were less than pleasing for Klara to see. Even though the windows were heavily tinted and they couldn't see her, her senses kicked in. Something was going to happen, and soon. Quietly, she flipped the strap off her revolver and unlocked her door.
Despite a close call, the rest of the ride proceeded normally. She arrived at the regional headquarters and was brought into the underground complex rather than the above ground entrance. A handful of Special Protection agents were already nearby, likely waiting on Klara's arrival. Once the vehicle came to a stop, Klara opened the door herself and stepped out. The only agent that actually noticed her arrival saluted, the rest were geared up for... something.
"Welcome, Lieutenant Trovato." The human agent said. Klara returned the salute just so he'd drop it. "We were aware you were inbound. Lieutenant Halstein wanted to see you anyway."
Ignoring most of that, and continuing her walk toward the Special Protection barracks, Klara simply asked, "What is all the gear for? I saw you equipped."
The agent followed Klara into the barracks. "We expected an inspection as soon as you arrived. Lieutenant H-"
"I am not that rules and regulations sort." Klara said as she stopped the agent. "Halstein is Halstein, I am Trovato."
Klara turned into the briefing room of Special Protection, to see Lieutenant Adrian Halstein leaning over the map, moving various pieces around the map based on his assets and those that the Brakian government had. He had a reputation within Special Protection as being a very by the books sort that followed every single Omniwatch rule and regulation pertaining to Special Protection and the equipment that they are provided. On that, he and Klara differed greatly. Klara was willing to bend the rules as the ends justified the means.
Adrian looked up at Klara as she entered the room. The Brakian, a grey wolf, was significantly larger than Klara. He stood six feet and three inches, almost a full foot taller than Klara, and had some strength to him. He was older by a few years, about 34 according to his records, and had scars to show his experience within Special Protection. The blue eyes that watched Klara as she walked to the other side of the map were less than pleased that she was the one assigned to work with him.
The only things that Klara and Adrian shared were a dislike of their own species, and the fact that they were both born in the Sol system. Where Adrian had a surgery to make himself able to speak Sol Common without biology getting in the way, Klara retained a rather feline sound to her voice, though she trained herself to minimize its effect on her speech. She stopped herself from rolling the 'R's within Sol Common, among other things. In some ways, Adrian and Klara were relatively similar, but the species divide and methods of operating were going to be the biggest hurdle between them.
"Lieutenant Trovato." Adrian said without taking his eyes off of Klara. "You're late."
"And you're still an asshole." Klara said as she stared back at him, tail swishing behind her. She smiled slightly after a moment. "Even if I can't stand your mangy ass, it's good to have someone competent here."
Adrian shook his head and sighed looking away and back toward the map. "Captain Samih briefed you, correct?" He finally asked after taking a few notes on his datapad.
"He did, yes." Klara said as she still kept her eyes on Adrian. "What do you make of all this?"
"Good question." He said. "The government is making a statement more than anything I think; trying to force our hand. They are, however, likely prepared to carry it out as they know we don't have numbers to back up our investments on the ground."
That made Klara think for a moment as she looked over the Omniwatch holdings just in Landgate, then the various holdings elsewhere on the planet. "What are ten agents going to do then?" She asked.
"We're going to prioritize and use our atmospheric shuttles to get around the planet rapidly. They can't do a mass deployment and hit every facility at once." Adrian said. "So, we combat them at the highest value areas and let the others fall. We'll be pulling employees and high risk materials out, and have been, just in preparation of a potential failure."
"Potential?" Klara asked.
"Always have to plan for the worst case scenario." Adrian said. "And we are. Total loss is acceptable, because it will be recouped."
After a moment of running numbers in her head of the value of each site, and the income they brought in, Klara finally had to ask, "How?"
Adrian just smiled as he handed Klara a stack of papers.
March 11
Omniwatch Starship Parts Factory
Landgate Industrial Sector
The quality of Omniwatch hulls and parts were the only reason that they had a factory outside the Terran Quarter. The large complex once hired 4,000 people, half of them working the assembly lines. It used to be busy at all times of the day, but as the sun rose on the facility, it was entirely deserted save for an Omniwatch built infantry fighting vehicle and a handful of Special Protection agents and corporate security forces. At the cargo docks for the facility, there was the single shuttle that Special Protection was using and the shuttle for the security forces if they became overwhelmed and needed to withdraw.
With the government vote decided a few hours earlier, Omniwatch knew the military was coming. Canis' cargo port was already seized, and Silverdyne likewise was already hit. A few minor corporations saw their minor investments seized, and the government knew not to mess with Omniwatch until last when they had full strength. Orbital scans and listening in on Brakian communications showed a small convoy of vehicles on the way to the factory already and mostly infantry at that.
Klara was at the entrance of the factory, where the steel gates and guardhouse were far from protected. The concrete wall surrounding the facility was useful however. As far as the Brakians were aware, the facility was still intact and thus could be used by the government to rival the corporations. They were under orders to minimize damage, but so was Omniwatch for when they planned to reclaim the factory if it was lost.
That didn't stop Omniwatch from deploying a Sentinel war mech of course. While far from the large mechs that were known in 20th and early 21st century Earth, the mechs that Omniwatch fielded were only somewhat larger than an average person, allowing them to sit, and also allow them to operate in space stations and starships. This Sentinel was equipped with a heavy laser cannon and a high explosive missile launcher. It was on patrol within the facility grounds, able to reinforce quickly. It was out of the way to prevent the Brakians from seeing it initially and sending a large force from the start.
Since the vote was already made public, and Omniwatch was one of the biggest offenders of Brakian law, there was a small crowd of protesters across the street. Only about a hundred, but still symbolic if nothing else. The side of the street they were on was public property, and that was the only reason that Klara didn't shoot in their direction to disperse them. Omniwatch had a lot of public relations maneuvering they could do after the initial emergency passed, and Klara wasn't going to ruin that.
As the first transport trucks arrived at the entrance of the factory, Klara was slightly amused. It was all going to plan. Five trucks, about 50 Brakian soldiers, would be let into the factory and right into the kill zone. The first truck came to a stop outside the gate, being stopped by Klara's hand, the other one on her rifle. She approached the door of the vehicle, playing off being unaware of the vote of course.
"I don't see a reason that Brakian soldiers need to be approaching a high security Omniwatch facility." Klara said in native Brakian, which took the soldier at the wheel by surprise. "What do you need from us?"
_ _
"By order of the government, this facility is being repossessed along with its land." The driver said. "Are you not aware of this?"
_ _
Klara of course laughed at the remark. "I'll need actual proof of that. Anyone can get your tattered rags you call uniforms and pretend to be soldiers."
While the soldier obviously didn't like the "tattered rags" remark and growled a bit, he didn't do anything about it. "Let us in the gates or we'll break them down."
_ _
That was what she was hoping for. She walked back to the guard post and pressed the button to slide open the gates. Once they were open just enough, the first truck passed through. Klara notified the rest of the soldiers. They saw it, of course, but it was always worth calling it out for them to deal with. Klara could hear the faint stomping of the Sentinel moving to intercept the trucks. She closed the gate behind the trucks, and raised the front blast doors that obscured the factory from the protesters outside.
The first explosion followed a whistling of a missile from the Sentinel. Laser rifle fire followed after as Klara stepped out of the guard post. She walked to the edge of the concrete wall and peered around the corner, through the gate, watching as the trucks tried to spread out as the soldiers were attempting to get off. The Sentinel's laser cannon hit a second truck, causing it to explode into a fireball. Klara felt the heat off of that one this time. In the moment of silence, Klara could hear screaming from the protesters outside the walls, and then pushed it away.
A handful of Brakian soldiers had disembarked from the rear truck, and one noticed Klara. He fired a burst of shots into the wall, one bullet only just missing Klara's ear and ricocheting off the guard post behind her. The soldier was struck in the head with a round from Klara's revolver shortly after, and she slipped through the gate into the facility. Laser fire from the buildings and the mech on the ground cut down the Brakian soldiers and vehicles quickly, the whole fight being over in only a minute. Once the lasers silenced, Klara was given a chance to look around.
The entire force the Brakians sent was dead, save for one. Klara could heard the hushed whispers of a Brakian prayer as she got closer to the trucks. About to round the wreckage of a truck, she realized that the person was instead issuing orders quietly, and the flick of its tail was just visible through the wreckage. Without warning, once it flicked out just enough, she stamped down on it and the Brakian let out a loud yelp. Probably on reflex, the Brakian fired at Klara, a bullet hitting her in the knee and causing her to fall.
A click followed the first bullet, and Klara looked up to see the barrel of the Brakian officer's pistol pointed at her head. If her feet had caught ground, she'd have moved, but her right knee being shot out prevented that. The unharmed Brakian lunged at her, tackling Klara to the ground and causing a bolt of pain to travel from the knee. Before she could react, the dull claws of the Brakian struck her in the face, causing shallow cuts. With the adrenaline she had, Klara was able to push the Brakian aside and then jump atop him. She flexed her own claws out and swiped the Brakian across the face, causing him to scream as his face was torn open from the claws she kept very sharp.
His extra strength worked against Klara as he flipped her off him, causing Klara to land a foot or so away from him. The Brakian stood up while Klara was still trying to get up herself. The drips of blood coming from his face landed on Klara's neck, and she had only a moment to react, and failed to. The Brakian's boot smashed into her side, causing her to fall over again. Commotion from the fighting got the attention of the other soldiers, one who rushed around. While the Brakian was on top of Klara, she just barely managing to hold him off, a soldier put several rounds into the dog, and gave Klara a chance to relax after the body went limp above her.
"Lieutenant." The soldier said, offering a hand out to at least get her sitting up.
Klara took the hand, not wanting to seem weak now but also needing to. She sat up just enough to properly use her headset, calling in the wounded and dead. "Lieutenant Trovato here. Starship factory is clear for now. We have zero dead and one wounded. I got shot in the knee. What do the orbital scans say?"
"Standby." Lieutenant Halstein said. About a minute passed while the Omniwatch medic worked on Klara's knee, rushing it for the most part. He had a regenerative gel at least, and that soothed the pain as the knee rebuilt, but she was definitely going to be combat ineffective. "Alright Lieutenant, the _Ambassador_reads a battalion inbound and communications tap shows they're going to be converging on the site. Not sure you if you really want to fight that. They have artillery support in the hills. If they start firing, we'll use orbital batteries to take them out."
Klara thought over that information and looked around at the soldiers that she had. "Alright, so we're fucked. Not sure the manpower we have curr-"
"We're under battalion strength across the planet. We've already called for reinforcement but they're at least a week out still." Halstein interrupted.
"Then we're pulling out. We'll need everyone we can still. How vital is this factory?" Klara asked.
"Minimal really. But it's a large facility, that's why we were going to hold it. But we don't have the strength to take on a battalion. Is withdrawal your call then?"
"Yes, we're pulling out with our shuttles. Return to Regional HQ or is there somewhere else we could be needed?" In the distance, she could hear the sounds of artillery firing, and close. While she still could, over platoon communications, Klara sounded the withdrawal back to the shuttles. Everyone else could hear the firing in the silence at the facility and knew exactly why they were moving.
"Pull to Regional. We have sighted the Brakian 1st Foreign Division approaching." Halstein said. "We also detected artillery fire. Bombardment inbound. On both of you."
The first shells landed at the front of the facility, destroying almost everything where everyone was, but had already moved from. Klara couldn't help but look back as the dust started to clear. In the skies, should could see several bright flashes, followed by parting of the clouds as a railgun shell pierced the atmosphere. Even this far away, she could feel the ground tremble from the impacts on the hills that destroyed the artillery. She hoped that the display of firepower would dissuade any further attempts at taking on the corporation, but she wasn't that hopeful.
As the platoon climbed into the two shuttles, and the mech getting into the third transport for it, Klara thought about what they'd be dealing with at the regional headquarters. The 1stForeign Division was a largely human unit that joined the Brakian government, looking to experience a new, slightly less advanced military life. The Alliance mostly deployed powered armor infantry, which were effectively tanks anyway, and Omniwatch had a mix of regular infantry and powered units. The Brakians though were similar to 21st Century Earth in terms of military equipment, and thus it was simpler. Omniwatch had a standing policy that the 1stForeign Division were terrorists.
The shuttles lifted off without any interference and quickly began their flight back to the regional headquarters while sticking to airspace that was cleared of possible anti-air units. Klara pulled out her datapad and connected to the Omniwatch battle network. Immediately she could tell that the corporation was in a very bad state. Most forces were centered on the regional headquarters, steadily evacuating from every other facility that was supposed to be held. Despite what Halstein said, the Brakians did do a mass deployment, and the underestimating is making the corporation, and the reputation of Special Protection, suffer.
A few explosions rocked Klara's shuttle as they approached the regional headquarters, and a rapid landing put the team on the ground. Once Klara stepped out, she could see the damage to the shuttle. They were definitely nearly taken down by a Brakian AAA round. Klara relinquished her command over the squad of Omniwatch regulars and took on a quick jog toward the headquarters with the other SPD officers following her. If regional was going to be hit, she might as well coordinate with Halstein.
