Chapter 5: Bull Run
Joey began to pack. He was leaving in a couple of days. "It hurts me to leave without saying anything to them." He looked down at the picture he held in his paws. "But if I don't go then I won't be able to...," he stared at the photo for a long time and nearly jumped out of his spots when the phone startled him.
He was hesitant to answer the phone. Something in the back of his mind told him not to answer it, go finish packing, but he picked it up anyway. "Hello?"
There was no answer so he asked again. "Hello? Is anyone there?"
"You weren't going to leave without saying good bye to everyone were you?"
Joey's eye's widened. "Who is this?"
"Before you leave, meet me and the others tomorrow at..."
Joey walked around the campus, staring down at the uneven and cracked up pavement as he strode.
"Hey Joey!" He turned around and was nearly knocked over when a dog jumped on him.
"Get off me Andrew." Joey pushed his friend away, but Andrew just laughed. "What do you want? Shouldn't you be cleaning dishes?"
"Well about that....I quit working in the cafeteria."
"Why'd you do that?"
Andrew smiled and adjusted the goggles around his neck. "I have other thing's to focus on."
"That much homework huh?"
"Not exactly. More like studying." Andrew's smile grew slightly and a light blush rose up in his cheeks, but Joey didn't notice.
"Alright then. See you later dawg." Joey turned back around and resumed walking. Andrew ran up in front of him.
"Yeah right. It's been a long time since you hung out with us."
"So? I've been busy. Now I got to go. There's somewhere I have to be." Joey pushed past the canine and ran off.
Andrew sighed heavily. "What's wrong with you?" Andrew walked by the dorm building. "Tomorrow I'll be back in here. I wonder who I'll have for a roommate." He looked up at the third story building. He looked at his cell phone. "Hmm. I better go and talk to Jason about getting new times." He walked behind the building and heard something. His ears perked. "What's going on?" He ran toward the noise. He heard two voices, no. It was three. He leaned against the wall and looked around the corner.
There were two tall bulls. Both looked to be about 6'4" and definitely had more muscle than him. The only difference between the two was one had a light brown fur and the other's fur was a more deeper black than Andrew's. Andrew saw a third fur, although it was hard to see past them. He listened in on what they were saying.
"What's a queer like you doing at OUR school?" asked the brown bull.
"Here's a better question, what are we going to do to you?" The black bull grinned and nudged his partner.
"Let's see. I'm here to get a good career later on in life. I don't know why you two are here though and you aren't going to do anything to me."
Andrew's eye's widened. Ned?!
"You smartass!," yelled the brown bull. "Were going to enjoy kicking your ass, right Zack?"
Zack cracked his knuckles and nodded. "Hell yeah Tony." He picked up the lion by his shirt collar and held him against the building.
Oh no! Andrew grabbed a small stone and chucked it. It smacked the back of Zack's head. "Hey heifers! Aren't you late for your milking somewhere?"
Zack let go of Ned and turned around. "Who ever did that better come out now and get ready for an ass whooping."
Andrew stepped out from the corner and looked at the now enraged bull and his counterpart, but saw that Ned had already taken off. Least he got away okay.
"Who do you think you are mutt?," yelled Tony. "You have a death wish or something?"
"I was thinking I wasn't going to let you hurt him." Andrew's words came out smooth but inside he was shaking.
Zack rubbed the back of his head where he had been hit "You mean that Queer? What's it to you?"
"He's my friend and you were going to harm him for being gay? Of all the most idiotic reasons, this always makes me sick." Andrew tried to sound tough, although he knew they could hear the fear in his voice.
"Well since the Queer got away..." started Tony.
"We'll kick your ass in his place," finished Zack.
They walked toward Andrew, grinning and punching their fists into their paws.
Andrew growled and raised his paws, although he'd never really been in a fight before, he had sparred with friends and he prepared himself. What did you get yourself into you crazy dog?
"Don't you even think about touching him."
The bulls stopped as two furs ran in between them and Andrew.
"Who the hell are you two?!" asked Zack.
A white tiger stood in front of Tony. "The name's Rai." He stood at an amazing height of 6' 8", towering over the bull.
"And I'm Lexin," said the light orange tiger. He stood two inches taller than Rai. Looking down at Zack. "Do the smart thing and walk away now."
When the bulls didn't budge, Lexin growled and bared his fangs at them. "NOW!"
"You got lucky Mutt, but this isn't the end of it." said Zack. The pair of bovine walked off.
The tigers turned around and stood in front of Andrew.
"Umm thanks a lot. I'll see you guys later." Andrew turned to leave but Lexin grabbed him and held him there. Andrew growled but quickly fell silent when he caught the glare from Lexin. "I didn't need...I didn't ask...what are you two doing here?"
Rai walked over. "Let him go Lex." Lexin did as he was told but kept his glare on the canine. "A strange lion walking by told us that a black lab was going to get thrashed by a couple of jerks behind the dorms and here we are." He smiled and gave Andrew a hug
Ned went to get help? Andrew rubbed the back of his head. "Well...they were going to hurt a friend of mine and..."
"And you acted before thinking!" said Lexin, finishing the canine's sentence. "You should have more sense than that!"
"Geez Lex. My first time seeing you guys back and your already yelling at me?"
Lexin shook his head and sighed. "What do you think would have happened if we hadn't shown up? You wouldn't have lasted two minutes against them."
"Hey! I've been working out and getting stronger since you two have been gone."
Rai poked Andrew's side and got a giggle and slight blush from him. "He has gotten more muscle Lex. But he's still the same." He smiled and hugged the tiger.
"Ain't that the sad truth," said Lexin
"Okay. So I'm not as big as you two or as good a fighter, but you know I can take care of myself. So what are you two doing here anyway?"
"We got done registering. Were late, but were back." Rai kissed Lexin's cheek. "Oh by the way. Do you know any good gyms around here?"
Andrew told them about where we worked.
"Sounds good to me. Hope they have a big enough room so Rai and I can spar." Lexin kissed Rai back.
Andrew chuckled. "Don't worry Lex. It does. The rooms are big enough for you two and others."
"That's good. We might have to include you in our training," said Rai.
"Oh no. After the last time I went against you two. No way."
"Suit yourself." Rai poked Andrew again and got another giggle. "I guess we'll be seeing you quite a bit Andrew."
"Yeah. Aren't I lucky? Hey wait. So are you going to be moving into the dorms?"
Rai smiled and hugged Lexin tight. "Yep. Were going to be roommates. Why do you ask?"
"Were going to be seeing each other a lot then cause I'm going to be moving in here too."
"Really? Sounds like it'll be fun," said Rai.
"Just try not to be a frequent visitor. You know how we like our 'privacy'."
Andrew rolled his eyes. "Don't worry about that. I'm not as perverted as some furs."
Lexin grinned and growled. "And what's that suppose to mean?"
"Umm...nothing. Just saying I'm not going to bug you guys. Sorry but I got to go. I need to take care of things at work. See you guys later."
"Alright then. See you later." Rai hugged Andrew and ruffled his hair.
"Just don't jump into fights like that again okay? We won't always be around to help." Lexin punched the canine's arm softly but still caused him to wince. The two tiger's walked off, leaving Andrew to gather his thoughts.
Did Ned know Rai and Lexin knew me? How could he have? Andrew looked at the time on his cell again. "Aw crap!" He took off running toward the gym. "I can't believe how late I am." Unfortunately, he hadn't noticed that there were two furs eavesdropping.
"So that mutt works at that gym huh? You thinking what I'm thinking Tony?"
"So we going tonight then Zack?"
"You know it! We could use a workout." he grinned.
. . .
"I know, I know. I'm late again. I promise though that it won't happen again."
Andrew stood in front of a very puffed up Crocodile. Jason didn't look very happy. His face was set in a slight scowl, and his scales had the look of shine from a fresh toweling.
"I told you the other night not to miss tonight because we were being inspected. Your very lucky that the inspectors haven't showed up yet. Anyways, I'm not going to fire you, in case that was on your mind. But I am going to give you a warning and ask you to see me after your hours are up."
"Yes boss. I promise, I will not mess up again. I just got a little sidetracked today."
"Oh really?" He leaned close to the canine. "Who is the lucky devil?"
"What?!?"
"The fur who distracted you. Who is he?" he asked in a toothy grin.
Andrew blushed. "No it's not like that. Some old friends are in town, and a current friend is acting a little strange right now."
. . .
Andrew left his bosses office after a short conversation about work ethics. Jason didn't like them either, but they were required. Andrew packed up as he always did, and left through the back. He began to walk through the alley when a large fur stepped out in front of him.
Andrew stopped and begun to turn when another fur stepped out behind him. He recognized the scent at once to be the scent of a bull.
At once, many things went racing through his head. Training sessions with Daniel, training sessions with Lexin and Rai, tombstone epitaphs. Up in the front was a low swiping kick taught to him by Daniel. He immediately crouched down and spun with as much force as he could muster, keeping his kicking-leg slightly rigid.
The bull behind him fell to the floor, but at the same time, the other bull lifted him and slammed him up against a wall. Andrew was disoriented from the immediate pain. In his head, he could hear Daniel laughing and saying, "You should have done..."
Out of nowhere, the bull holding him went flying. Andrew fell to the floor with a thud. Something went flying after the bull and struck it with an even louder thud. A few more thuds followed, then the shape moved to the other bull, and another series of thuds could be heard. Andrew was to disoriented to take in much of what he was seeing.
A large cat figure walked over to him and helped him up. Daniel's voice protruded from it's mouth, "You should have continued with the sweep and popped up onto your hands to kick him in the face. Both of them would've been down and vulnerable. You better be glad I was here to help you out. Anyway, I came here to tell you that Joey is gone. His whole apartment is packed and gone, and so is he. I went to visit him today and found out. I don't think he told anyone about this."
"Ow, that hurt." Andrew rubbed his back. "Joey's gone? But today..." Andrew stood, with assistance from Daniel and walked. "I saw him today. He seemed scared of something."
"I think we all are afraid of the same thing Andrew."
"What do you mean?"
Daniel sighed. "It's Ned and you know it. There's something ominous and threatening about him."
"Daniel..."
"Come on Andrew. You think the same thing."
"There is something, but we can't blame everything bad on him. Believe it or not, something good happened after I saw him today."
"Oh? What happened?"
"If I didn't stop these two bulls from hurting Ned earlier, than I wouldn't have seen two of my good friends."
"Oh really? Look what happened back there."
"Well...I'm still not going to blame Ned. He's still a friend. Don't forget that."
Daniel sighed again but smiled. "Well Andrew, your not that bright, but you do have your moments."
"Why thank....HEY!" The two shared a good laugh. "So what are we going to do with them?"
Daniel pulled out his cell. "I'll call Roy to come and pick them up."
Roy again? I wonder if they...
