Author Notes

Okay, cleaning house a little bit. If an "Additional Vote" hasn't got more than 5 votes by now, and it's more than four or five entries old, it's getting scrubbed. Of course, votes can be suggested again at a later date, so don't worry if your idea didn't make the cut at this time.

Additionally, note that while Wicker causes more problems for Cassidy's stealth than he helps, this is part of the training process - every time he's put into use somehow, Wicker will get a bit better. The same goes for all characters we put into use. Of course, there's that penalty in the meantime...

Also, thinking something like this fellah for the otter to be added:

Pathfinding Fifty-ninth Entry

When you saw the world from Cassidy's perspective, it never really looked good. That was because the tan-furred rabbit saw pretty much everything, when others didn't know they were being watched. In some cases, though, well, things tended to look even worse. Now was one of those cases.

Letting the little halfling girl dangle from her heavy claws, the big mother troll picked up her first little morsel by her feet. The helpless teen squirmed fetchingly, sobbing, tears running down her cheeks as she was lifted up...up...up, while the big mother troll leaned her head back, her jaws opening so very, very wiiiide. Cassidy could only imagine the smell - trolls didn't brush their teeth, obviously, and the things they ate had to build up over time.

Of course, it was Cassidy that got chosen for this mission. He was the one with the best skills at hiding and sneaking, after all. Not that he minded in the least: it was nice to be useful, to have a certain set of skills that would help his friends. And whatever else he might think of Rufus, the big grey wolf was Cassidy's friend. Quiet as he was, Cassidy still felt a great deal of loyalty to Rufus, and didn't think he could ever quite repay what he owed to the big guy. Whatever it took, whatever he was asked, Cassidy would do it.

Even if it meant bringing the newbie along for the ride.

Wicker was cute enough, Cassidy figured, and though the rabbit was all business when he was on a mission, he had to admit that the youngster had more than a little promise in stealth. He wasn't a complete novice, either, judging from the way he held his flint-tipped spear, Still, whether he'd be able to perform when the time came remained to be seen.

The hardest part of a job like this was waiting. When you were saving somebody, the first impulse was the heroic route - the stupid route, in other words. Leap out and declare your intentions loudly and clearly, then wade into battle. Oh no, not Cassidy. That was an easy way for him to end with his leaf-shaped tail tacked to some monster's wall. Even when the little halfling girl was dangling quite literally right over the big mama troll's wide-stretched mouth, and the other trolls had popped three more of their prizes into the big pot, and were very carefully starting a fire beneath it, while the poor things looked out with such large, sad eyes, whimpering and pleading with their captors for mercy, Cassidy held back, waiting just a little...just a little...just a little bit longer now...and...

"No!" yelled Wicker suddenly, his patience worn out. The slender deer boy rose from hiding, then flung his spear with all his might, landing it right in the middle of the mama troll's neck, effectively cutting off her ability to swallow. It was a perfectly-timed throw, perfectly-aimed as well. It was also the absolute worst thing Wicker could have done, even though he'd never know it until it was too late. That was the problem with youngsters like him, of course; they hadn't learned that single valuable lesson, which only came from experience: the ability to wait.

[Needed roll 50 - rolled 56]

Against a normal enemy, Wicker might have just struck a telling blow right against the leader of these monstrous beasts. But trolls were anything but normal, and the mama troll soon demonstrated this as, casually tossing the little halfling aside, she reached up to jerk the spear out of her neck as though it were no more bother than a splinter. Instantly, her eyes swept around, coming to a stop on Wicker, who looked more than a little worried now, his eyes wide with fright, as he saw the wound he'd caused closing up right before him. He looked back for help, but Cassidy was already moving, already gone. The poor, frightened deer boy only looked back just in time to see five huge, hulking trolls barreling down on him, giving a shrill scream as he turned to run...only to end up snatched into the huge claws of the big mama troll.

Holding Wicker by his wrists and ankles as the teenaged reindeer squirmed and struggled, pulling his lithe body taut, the big mama troll parted her jaws, licking her chops hungrily, and then lifted the helpless, doomed little deer to her maw. Unable to watch the end, Wicker squeezed his eyes tightly shut against the moment of that first bite.

It was at that moment that the rest of the plan came into action.

Big mama troll gave a grunt of surprise as one of her arms came loose, neatly severed by a single swipe of the huge axe, Crute, Skaeth's weapon of choice. Bolliban, Urtan's spear, thunked loudly as it punched through her chest, then just as fast returned to the hand of its owner. Arrows from Vin, Landis, Cassidy, Wisselfleur, and Erlend filled the air, making the trolls bellow in annoyance as they were peppered with the shafts, before they roared even more loudly as Hanaro and Boskan joined the firing line with their heavy longbows.

This was only the first wave, of course. Moments later, Rufus was there, leading the charge right into the middle of the trolls, his sword and axe hacking left and right, Adel thrusting and chopping with her own blade, while Urtan, Urta, One-eye, Jonna, and Rael stepped into the breach with their spears, using their momentum to keep the trolls off-balance, with Skaeth hacking and slashing from the side.

Despite this momentary advantage, however, the injuries weren't sticking. As fast as they were being hurt, the trolls were healing just slightly less fast, and it took all of the efforts of the combatants combined to keep them from rallying. All it would take was for one of the trolls to catch the party with a swipe of a claw or a snap of jaws, and the tide would turn, just like that.

That was when Kyte slid past the big mama troll, his weapon severing the tendons on the backs of her legs. Toppling with a cry of momentary pain and annoyance, that cry soon turned to one of genuine agony as the green dragon opened her mouth, spewing gouts of yellow flame right in the troll leader's face! Turning her head, Kyte spread panic in the ranks with another belch of searing fire, enough to keep them from getting too close, from coming to the aid of the big mama troll. This was all the leeway needed, as the elephant girl leaped onto the fallen troll's stomach, and plunged her fist downward with a mighty blow. The trolless screamed loudly as she felt her heart seized in Padmini's powerful grip, and she grabbed the elephantess' wrist, her claws digging deeply into the smooth grey skin. Unflinching despite the pain, however, Padmini started to chant softly, a mantra of power, her eyes closing as she harnessed all the energy of her ch'i to her command. Then, with a slow, steady outward breath, she let that inner spirit flow from her body into the big mama troll. Suddenly, Padmini's fist started to smoke, and then to flame, and the huge troll thrashed savagely, lashing out in agony as her inner parts were being seared to ash. Those flailing claws would surely have sliced Padmini to ribbons, if Jonna and Urtan hadn't been there, Urtan's spear pinning one arm to the ground, while Jonna brought down her heavy mace, Maulgrim, crushing the trolless' other hand firmly into the dirt. At the last moment, Adel leaped past Padmini, thrusting her longsword firmly through the big mama troll's chin, the point coming out the top of her head, pinning her mouth shut as well, until Padmini had done her grisly, finishing work, and the big mama troll flopped back and went still, her whole body growing brittle with the heat of the elephant girl's ch'i flame.

As the other trolls fell back, Ryg stepped forward, flanked by Shara and Imogen. With the hands of foxtaur and unicorn on her shoulders, lending her their own magical strength, Ryg raised her arms, her face lifting to the heavens.

"Spirits of wind and flame," she called out to unseen hosts, "hear my plea, and answer it! Strike our foes! End them!"

Fingers thrusting outward, Ryg's sightless gaze fixed on the confused trolls. But no attack came from the front, as they'd expected. Instead, it came from the rear. The cookfire they'd built, careful not to burn themselves in the process, sprang up, and then whipped out, rushing from beneath the pot like a waterfall. Cascading over the remaining trolls, the fire whipped around them, flaying their flesh as they screamed in the maelstrom, and then were silent, their bones turned to ash.

[Chance of success in combat 55% - rolled 33]

Slumping suddenly, Ryg had to be supported by the two younger females, her energies spent with her exertions.

"Well," chuckled Rufus, breathing hard with the exertions of battle and the gradually fading rush of adrenaline, "that was fun."

He walked over to Wicker, and smirked at the reindeer boy, before giving a shrug and walking past - that was about as close to an outright rebuke that the grey wolf was going to give, but it was enough to make Wicker's cheeks turn crimson with shame. Continuing onward, Rufus pulled his hunting knife, and quickly sliced the ropes of the big net where the halflings were squirming. Almost before he'd even finished, the halflings darted out, while the ones in the pot pulled themselves over its lip, the trolls apparently not having bothered with tying their morsels, expecting they could keep them in the pot themselves, and the one lying where big mama had dropped her also scrambled to her feet. In a trice, all nine of the naked little teens scampered off into the woods without so much as a thank you.

"Huh," said Rufus, before he shrugged. "You'd almost think we looked dangerous or something."

Path Choices

Well...that seemed decidedly lacking in rewards of the sexy kind.

A simple pair of choices this time around. The first is: which event should happen first?

A) Ambush!

B) Valkyrie city

The second is: loot? Yea or Nay?
