Unstable Serenity - Chapter 15, Endless Danger
Max's POV
The whole aircraft shook as the wheels pressed down hard against the paved runway of Hamid Karzai International Airport. I was eager to get going and find the Red Sodium before we would run into any trouble. Viktor looked at me and grinned.
"Hopefully we're the first ones here" he said.
"Yeah," I sighed. "Hopefully."
The aircraft taxied over to the gate where Viktor and I departed from his jet. We were escorted to the terminal by local airport security. I stayed close to Viktor, because if there was anyone here that knew what they were doing the most, it was him.
The temperature of the air outside was very hot and dry, I could immediately feel the sweat fall off my scales. Viktor was also sweating, I couldn't imagine what it would be like to have fur.
At nearly every corner of the airport, was an armed security guard wielding either an AK-47 or an M4 carbine rifle. Things are so different here than they are at home. Airport security at home carried the occasional glock, but these guys are armed to the teeth... It very well reminded me of Russia.
We walked in the terminal building. Instantly it felt a whole lot cooler, the temperature must have dropped easily by five degrees.
Viktor spoke with the fur who processed our passports in Dari. The fur was a black panther, who stood about six feet even, he wore a light t-shirt and long brown khaki pants. I watched him hand our passports back to Viktor, where he then returned mine to me.
We proceeded towards the exit of the terminal.
"I didn't know you spoke Arabic" I said.
"It's not Arabic. It's Dari" he corrected.
"Oh," I scratched the back of my neck. "Should I have studied more about Afghanistan before coming here?"
"Well, we shouldn't be here for long" he smiled at me.
We walked right through airport security without even being checked.
"H-how come we didn't get searched?" I questioned.
"Don't worry about it" he brushed it off. "I have ways."
"You can't be serious" I said.
"You shouldn't underestimate the power of generals" Viktor said in return.
I just shook my head and kept walking.
"So... How do you know Dari?" I asked.
"You ask a lot of questions" he stated.
"You are full of mysteries" I replied.
"The KGB taught me Dari, Spanish, English, Mandarin and German; and in that order"
"Wait," I stopped him. "So... English is your fourth language?"
"You would be correct" he smiled and continued walking towards the exit.
"I would never have guessed" I said.
"That's because I speak English and Russian more than any other language I know" he replied.
We walked back outside, and once again the hot air hit me like a wall. Waiting for us in front of the terminal was a taxi, and Viktor gestured me in. Once we were in the vehicle, Viktor told the taxi driver to take us to a certain address.
"Are you completely sure about this?" I asked.
"I'm very sure, my sources are very correct" he replied.
Viktor and I didn't talk much for the duration of the drive to our destination. For the next fifteen minutes, I would be looking out the window, and looking out at the city of Kabul. Oh how different it is here, the buildings, all made of rock, cement and brick, they looked well structured.
The taxi we rode in pulled up to a smaller building than the others. "This is it" Viktor said.
Viktor paid the taxi driver and we exited the vehicle, where the taxi then took off.
"So... How are we supposed to get out of here when we're done?" I asked.
"I've made arrangements" he replied.
"...But what if that fails?" I asked.
"You worry too much," he said.
We walked right up to the building and Viktor checked to see if the door was locked. "Looks like they're late" he chuckled.
I looked around to make sure we weren't going to be ambushed. I guess you could say I was a little paranoid.
Using paperclips, Viktor managed to pick the lock. "Umm, are we going to get into trouble for this?" I asked worriedly.
"Only if the Cevenda find us" he replied.
Viktor pried open the rusty door. As it opened, you could hear the squeal in it. "Must have been ages since anyone has been here" I spoke.
"This building is older than me" Viktor said.
Viktor pulled out two flashlights and handed one to me. Since there was no power, it would be difficult to be searching in the dark, especially if we were racing the clock.
We were rummaging through the rubble of the old building, it appears that the second floor had collapsed probably due to excessive stress.
"I think I found something" he said.
"I think I did too," I replied.
I looked down and saw something red, probably the Red Sodium. I picked up the red object and Viktor knelt down to pick up his object.
"Hehe, looks like it's right here... And the glass is reinforced, so the solution couldn't spill during the collapse of the second floor" Viktor said.
"Well... I thought I found it... Turns out this is just a bloody piece of wood" I replied.
Viktor looked over at me and spoke "Huh, someone must have di-"
He was immediately interrupted by gunfire. We both fell to the floor at two heavily armed furs came storming in with AK-47 rifles and supressed fire upon us. I was protected by some of the rubble, and Viktor was hiding behind some more rubble on the other side of the room. The intruders were shelling us to the ground, and they fired in bursts to save ammo.
I crawled over to hide behind another rock of rubble. I tried to be quick and stealthy, moving only when shots were fired to supress any sounds of movement. Ever so slowly I crawled closer and closer to the shooters without them noticing... I was almost within pouncing distance. The furs seemed to not move any closer, probably because they would either trip over any rubble or risk having me or Viktor jump up at them.
I was almost in position, but they kept spraying rounds all around me. I finally caught a break, both shooters had to reload at the same time, but they loaded their AKs' with drums, not banana clips. Drums are very effective when it comes to relentlessly fucking something or someone up, but when it comes time to reload... Oh boy is it ever a bitch if you're not prepared to do it fast enough.
Out of the rubble I jump out at one of the furs. Using a metal bar I was able to grab onto before pouncing them, I took a strike at one of the furs. A fatal blow to the head, and instant death. The other fur however, dropped his gun as we would not be able to reload in time, and grabbed by right arm, the one holding the metal bar. He twisted it and the bar fell out of my paw. I yelled out in pain, but I fought back. I intertwine my right leg with his left leg, and turn my body to the left quickly. He instantly loses balance and fall over on the ground, smacking his head on the ground hard. Using my left arm, I quickly readjust my right arm by twisting it back into place, ohh the crack it made when it relocated it. The pain just seared through my body, but I would be experiencing more pain if I didn't do anything about this attacker of mine. I slam my left paw in his stomach hard, knocking the wind out of him. Followed by that I smash his face in with my right paw, and he easily loses five teeth in the process. I pick up the AK he dropped, reloaded it and popped two caps between his eyes.
Viktor got up and tilted his head at me. "I never knew you were that angry" he said.
"This fucking guy works for Zarith, the bastard who tried to cut my heart out!" I shot out. I picked up the other AK, reloaded it and tossed it Viktor's way. With one paw Viktor caught it perfectly.
Outside I could hear screaming and yelling.
Viktor noticed right away what was happening, as he spoke Dari. "Shit, they're coming inside!" Viktor warned as he rushed towards the door.
As three more furs tried to attack us, Viktor and I sprayed them down with bullets. We exited the building only to be met with more hostility. I shot eight rounds to our left, and killed six furs, meanwhile Viktor shot in multiple bursts, killing four more furs to our right.
"This way" he hollered. I followed him quickly.
More shots were fired at us, one almost grazed me, but I was able to run fast enough. We took cover behind a vehicle, where Viktor and I continued to fire off rounds. Suddenly it felt like a hot sting, a bullet went through and through in my left leg, and I fell to the ground. I failed to look behind me for danger, but Viktor was quick on his feet, he immediately turned around and shelled the fur to the ground who shot me. I screamed out in pain.
"It's okay! We're going to get out of here!" Viktor yelled. He peeked over the vehicle and grew a worried look on his face "...Soon!"
"Oh gawd, how many!?" I asked.
"Too many! That's how fucking many!" Viktor yelled.
"Eat lead you terrorists!" Viktor supressed fire upon the Cevenda soldiers, killing many of them at a time. Bullet after bullet, body after body, this bloodshed was not going to end anytime soon. I decided to pull my weight and stop thinking about the pain of my wound. I got up and fired endlessly at the Cevenda. Pumping rounds into their heartless bodies.
Within the midst of the constant battle back and forth between us and the Cevenda, I could hear the sound of rotor blades. Suddenly, over one of the hills I could see a Mi-24PN, a Russian attack helicopter appear out of nowhere, followed by a Mi-26 Russian transport helicopter. Like bread on butter the helicopter sprayed down hundreds of round per second, bodies of our enemies went down like flies. Blood was flying everywhere in front of us and explosions went off when it fired its rockets at the enemy vehicles. The Mi-26 touched down just in front of us, and out came heavily armed Russian furs to our rescue.
I was picked up by big strong Russian furs and carried to the helicopter. Viktor followed quickly, and made sure we would all get out of here alive. I was placed on the floor of the helicopter, and everyone boarded. The door was shut behind us and Viktor ordered the pilot to get us out of here.
I couldn't help but holler in pain, as I was really feeling the effects of deadly bullet wound.
"It's okay Max, we have doctors here, they're gonna take care of you, but you're going to have to hang on!" He said.
The doctors ripped off my pants so they could see my wound better.
"They have no morphine to put you to sleep! So you're going to have to be awake for this!" Viktor explained.
I am going to kill him for this.
Firstly, they clean out my wound with rubbing alcohol. I squirm in pain. Viktor hands me a flat wooden stick to bite onto for the duration of my operation. The soldiers hold me down while the medical doctors begin stitching me up. The first stich made me almost scream out in pain, but after a few more stiches were pinned in place, I began to pass out.
