A Pet's Best Friend
Another story told by me in front of an audience. It involves a strange event in which humans and pets are switched. Humans become the pets, while their former companions become the masters. My best work so far and also one of the longer ones. As always, feedback is welcome so please comment if you have something to say.
Sean anxiously paced around the edges of the glass enclosure he currently found himself in. His thoughts played in a seemingly endless loop in his mind as he tried to figure out how this could have happened. There was one thing he could come to a conclusion on. Mother Nature sure had a cruel sense of humor.
Only yesterday, Sean had been just your regular guy. He had a house and a job, everything he needed to be happy in life. That is, until he woke up in a glass cage this morning, scarcely an inch tall by the estimates he gathered gazing across his living room. The whole situation was impossible, and it only became more so as two beings entered the room. One of them definitely had feline features and the other canine. Upon closer examination, the markings gave these creatures away as his own pets, his cat Asker and his German shepherd Rufus. As if waking up in a cage wasn't bad enough, now his pets were many times his size and were walking and doing things much like humans.
The ground beneath Sean's feet began to shake as the creatures approached. He watched as Rufus proceeded past the glass prison where he then had a seat on the couch and flipped on the TV. His heart nearly leapt out of his chest as his view was suddenly blocked by lots of cat face. He tried to shuffle backwards quickly, only to stumble and send wood chips flying as he fell backwards. Asker's ears drooped at the human's reaction and resulting fall.
"Rufus, I think something's wrong with poor Sean. He seems rather jumpy and sad today." Without looking over from the TV, he simply nodded his head and responded, "Uh huh." Asker moved in closer, her nose practically touching the glass and fogging it up, "What's wrong little guy?"
Sean felt his jaw drop and he gawked awkwardly at the large, feline face before him for several moments trying to grasp the fact that she just spoke. It finally registered that the words were directed toward him this time, and he shook his head to clear away his racing thoughts, "I, uh... I'm fine, but how did this happen to me?" Asker seemed to show even more worry as well as confusion on her features at that question, "What do you mean? You've been our little human since you were very young."
Sean was rather taken aback by this statement. What asker said was preposterous. His day had proceeded as normal yesterday and everyday before that for as long as he remembered. He had no idea what was going on here. "Uh... Asker, that's not possible. Just yesterday everything was normal. This was my house and you were my cat and dog that I took care of."
Asker shook her head sadly, a tear coming to her eye. Something was very wrong with her little human. He always used to be so happy, perking up whenever he saw them, wanting to be held and talk all the time. Now he seemed depressed and was claiming that things weren't the way they should be. Was it amnesia maybe? If Rufus accidentally bumped the table and made poor Sean hit his head, the clumsy oaf was going to get her claws across his nose.
"Rufus! Sean is acting really strangely today. I think it might be amnesia or something. Can humans even get that?" Rufus simply replied with the same monotone, "Uh huh." "You wouldn't happen to know anything about it would you? Did you see him hit his head or anything?" Again he simply responded, "Uh huh." Asker growled angrily at this, and snatched a newspaper from the kitchen table. She rolled it up tightly and... SMACK!
"You knew about this and didn't tell me?!" Rufus whimpered a bit as he rubbed the top of his snout with a hand to ease the sting of the paper. "Ow, what was that for?" This of course resulted in another loud smack, which to Sean sounded similar to a gunshot in his diminished state. "Did you not hear anything I said?" She snatched the remote and shut off the TV, placed her hands on her hips, and glared angrily at the confused Rufus with her paw tapping on the carpet. "Get up! You're taking Sean to the vet."
Rufus was about to protest this when the remote was raised to strike. "Ok, ok, I'll take him. Sheesh." He hastily extracted himself from the inviting cushions of the couch and checked to make sure his pockets contained his wallet and keys before heading over to collect Sean. The human found himself gazing upwards at the towering figure of his former dog Rufus as the top of the glass enclosure was removed. He quickly backed into a corner to avoid the large hand attempting to scoop him up. Rufus' ears turned back and he sighed loudly. It was obvious he wanted to get this done quickly and was annoyed at Sean's unwillingness to cooperate. "Come on little dude. We need to get you checked out to make sure nothing's wrong."
Sean was beginning to look rather flustered at this. Being treated like a pet by his pets had started to wear thin on his nerves. "Look it's just as I told Asker, something weird has happened. Yesterday I was normal and you two were my pets. This is not the way things are supposed to be! There is nothing wrong with me, my memory is functioning perfectly and I refuse to be treated like a pet any longer." He folded his arms over his chest at the close of that statement, attempting to look firm and unmoving in the face of a creature whose fingers were longer than he was tall. This may have been successful if it weren't for his legs shaking so much that his knees could be heard knocking together.
Asker was right, Sean was acting weird. "Why are you scared? You've been in the car a million times before and it's never bothered you. I'll even put on your favorite radio station." He desperately tried to convince Sean to cooperate, casting a longing glance over his shoulder at the TV periodically. The little human still refused to budge though. Rufus huffed and stormed into the kitchen where Asker was currently making dinner. "He's not listening to me, I give up." Another smack and yelp could be heard from the kitchen. No words were exchanged this time. Asker simply pointed toward the enclosure with the rolled up newspaper and Rufus returned, tail between his legs.
Sean remained in his corner. He couldn't help but smirk at Rufus' predicament. The large hand was lowered back into the glass enclosure, stretching out like a wall before the human who continued to stand there with arms crossed. This time however, Rufus wasn't having it. The floor began to slope toward the hand as the whole enclosure was tilted. He desperately tried to hold onto something, but the walls and floor were smooth glass, so he simply slid into the palm and was quickly lifted into the air.
"Hah! Got you this time." Sean just sat there and cursed his luck. He'd been counting on Rufus continuing to display that streak of no common sense, but the dog just had to figure it out. The hand began to tilt until Sean dropped a short distance into a chest pocket on Rufus' shirt, presumably so he could drive without worrying about the human wandering around the car's interior and hurting himself.
Sean curled up dejectedly within the soft and warm prison of the pocket, listening to the sound of his former car's engine until they arrived at their destination. After a short time, the human found himself drifting off to sleep as a result of the exhaustion of the day and the warmth of the pocket. The sound of the car door shutting and a few curses from Rufus served as the announcement of their arrival. "Why is this place so busy? Does everyone in the neighborhood have a sick pet tonight?" Rufus grumbled as he headed toward the lobby. This was going to take forever.
The duo entered the lobby which was incredibly loud and packed almost to the bursting point. Rufus fought his way over to the counter, hand cupped over his pocket to protect Sean so he could get them checked in. The receptionist, an apparently anxious border collie, greeted them with as much friendliness as she could, though she had her ears half flattened against her head to block out some of the ceaseless roar of the worried pet owners inside.
"Hi there! Is your human experiencing sudden amnesia as well? If so, please fill out this form with your information and have a seat in the lobby if you can find one. One of our doctors or nurses will be with you as soon as possible to take a blood sample from your pet." The form and a pen were thrust into Rufus' hand and he was quickly urged to step aside so the next person could be checked in.
Once the form was filled out and handed over the counter to the receptionist, it seemed like at least another hour before Sean's name was called. Rufus once again fought through the crowded lobby. His determination was restored now that this ordeal was nearly over and he could finally go home and eat. They were escorted to one of the several examination rooms where one of the nurses was waiting.
The brightly colored parrot already had everything sterilized and prepped before they even entered the room. They did have to handle this sudden outbreak as quickly as possible so people could be on their way. The nurse's feathers ruffled happily as they entered. It was a sign that she loved her job and was happy to see every human that was brought through the door. She looked briefly at the form that had been sent in ahead of them. "Another amnesia case? I've never seen anything like this before. Alrighty then, let's take a look at little Sean here."
Rufus carefully fished the small human out of his shirt pocket and handed him over to the nurse who cooed excitedly. "Oh, you're just too cute little one! I'm just going to look into your eyes real quick then we'll give you a little poke and you'll be all done for today. How's that?" Sean wanted to argue that he was fine with the nurse as well, but just decided the effort would be wasted since no one believed him, so he just sighed and nodded.
At that, the nurse, whose nametag read Polly, gently set Sean onto the examination table and sat in a chair beside it to be at the proper height to check his eyes for any nerve damage. "Great! This will only take a few minutes."
Sean squinted in a rather annoyed fashion as a rather large light was shone into his eyes. "Just like the others, no inflammation or trauma around the nerves that are visible. Now, just one more little thing to do and you're done." The nurse said kindly as she pulled out the smallest needle she could possibly handle. "This will only sting for a moment."
Sean eyed the needle nervously. It was still rather large in his opinion. He winced as the needle poked his arm and withdrew a sample of his blood. "There we go. All done! You did so good Sean." She then turned to Rufus. "It will take us a few days to properly analyze the blood sample. We'll give you a call to let you know what we discover. In the meantime to at least fight against the confusion and the depression, try doing anything possible to make your human feel comfortable during this ordeal. Since they all seem to think that they used to be the dominant ones in the household, we recommend letting sean here tell you what he wants whether that be a certain type of food or anything really. Now you two have a wonderful afternoon and do try to be happy again Sean."
Rufus quickly collected Sean from the table and deposited him back into the shirt pocket where he would be safe. He left the room, hastily paid the receptionist, and fled the building happy to be away from all the noise of the busy office. He took a moment in the car to call Asker and inform her of what the vet said before departing. Much to his dismay, she had ordered him to stop at the store on the way home to pick up some things for Sean. Well, the sooner he got it done, the sooner he could finally spend time at home.
Sean heard some of the conversation, but didn't know what was needed at the store since he spent the remainder of the trip in the German shepherd's pocket. It gave him some time to brood over the events of the day though, so he didn't mind all that much. An unstoppable grin spread across his face as he recalled the nurse's instructions for Rufus and Asker to do whatever he wanted.
He was happy to be extracted from the pocket upon arriving back home even if he was put back in the glass enclosure for now. It was starting to get rather hot in there and he was sweating through his clothes. Sean took a quick drink from some kind of water dispenser mounted on the inside of his glass prison and watched the two giants sitting at the kitchen table unwrapping the things they had bought for him. He was rather curious, but couldn't see much since they were sitting in a way that blocked his view.
After a short while, Asker approached and reached inside to take him out. He felt much more comfortable having her handle him and quickly climbed into her palm. She took him over to the table and allowed him to climb off and take a look at his new things. The most important of those was what appeared to be a house. It looked incredibly realistic until you compared it to Asker or Rufus, but it was roomy enough for him on the inside at least. It had a tube that could be fed into a water bottle to provide running water for the human as well as a battery hookup for electricity. There was another tube for the drain water to flow into an empty waste receptacle.
After spending some time trying things out on the inside of the small house, he finally emerged and offered his thanks to the pair. He now had his own house with plumbing and electricity that he didn't have to pay anything to live in, he didn't have to go to work, he had Asker to cook for him and care for him, and now he had just been placed in charge over his pets again due to the doctor's orders. Perhaps this wouldn't turn out to be so bad after all.
