Roxy and Heindrich (Commission for Azzy) by Kavori Matthew D. Huffman

The huge city bustles with night life as people scramble to bars, home from work, and other numerous activities. A small, thin, mouse girl slowly wonders down the busy street, adorning rather baggy black pants ripped at the right knee, with chains hanging from various loops about them. Her shirt, also black, is visible only from the front opening of the short length, leather, trench coat she wears, but still manages shows off her noticeable femininity. She braves the chaos through downtown as she makes her way to visit a friend of hers at his downtown loft. A friend she recently met, a wolf, by the name of Heindrich.

As she draws close to his apartment building, she diligently crosses the street at a nearby crosswalk. A taxi blows past her completely ignoring the light and she casually flips the driver off as if this is a standard occurrence, then hurries her pace. She quickly makes her way up the small steps to Heindrich's complex and pages him from the door. He softly asks via the com "Yea? Who is it?" To which the little mouse simply replies, "Roxy." The younger wolf then buzzes her in and she then rapidly makes her way up the stairs to his studio on the top floor. Moments later she taps on his door to which the only reply is a soft "Come on in."

As Roxy enters, she is acknowledged by a young male wolf sitting at his computer over near the huge window. His studio loft is well furnished, having many photos and paintings of rivers, forests, and other nature scenes. The small dining area, he sectioned off his self, using white oak half walls made of split logs. Much of his studio is divided up this way, appearing much like a tiny version of a country ranch house. His furniture was also elegantly fashioned to follow this theme with an outstanding result. The slightly older mouse is a bit agape from the overwhelming décor, as it is certainly a bit new to her being a pure city mouse and Goth at that. This after all was her first visit to his apartment after they met 2 weeks ago in a small café and coffee shop. Heindrich quickly finishes up something on his desktop pc and then stands up to greet her. She walks over to him and he gestures to a big wooden framed sofa with huge earth tone cushions that sits just next to his desk along a far wall off to the right or south side of the studio. She takes and seat as he tells her to make herself comfortable.

"Would you like the TV on?" he asks with a soft warm smile after briefly adjusting his glasses.

Roxy nods slightly with a simple "Sure." as her reply. She watches as the wolf picks up a digital remote from his desk and pushes a few buttons. About ten feet across from the couch, on the divider to the dining area, a huge silver screen drops down and illuminates via the dual HD projectors hidden above them, all elegantly disguised within the natural décor. She blinks a bit in surprise as the cable tuner from the second pc controlling the theater system comes to life displaying a rather interesting weather documentary on the 90 inch screen.

"Damn, Heindrich this place is nice! And huge!" She states in amazement.

"Yea, this studio takes up this entire side of the top floor. This was the largest of the two up here so it just made since to take it" the wolf chuckles in response.

"This must cost a fortune! Especially with all the nice things you have in hear. Hell I just noticed all the old wildlife figures you have"

The wolf chuckles again, "Let's just say it pays for itself. Oh! Those are actually taxidermy from my hunting side of the family. They tend to hold to a lot of their more traditional way of life back in Tennessee. So what brings you over tonight?"

"Well I was hoping I could drag you out to a bar with me, since you're always at home when I text you. I mean do you even leave? It's like that day we met was a rarity for you." She comments in her usual blunt way.

"Ah! Well, I mostly work from home. I run a small online business as well as own these apartments. So I rarely have any reason to leave other than running errands now and then. I had stopped in to that café on my way back from a checkup with my doctor."

Wait a second...you own these? Bullshit!" She exclaims.

"Ha-ha yep! No wolf shit there either!" Heindrich jokes. "Yea I bought this building about 2 year ago and just about 4 months later started renting out the other apartments after spending so long remodeling. All are fully furnished in different styles and themes. They filled up quick. My family has always been wealthy and right after graduating with my business degree I invested in this and my online company."

"Truly amazing! I see you weren't kidding around when you said you had money and offered to cover my meal the other day. Well anyway its 8:45, should we head on down to one of the nearby bars? Ya aren't too stuck up for something like that, are ya?" Roxy jokingly responds.

"Heck, why not. I'm free for the time being!" Heindrich agrees.

As Roxy stands the slightly younger wolf powers everything down and grabs a light suede native style jacket to match his slightly western attire. The 29 year old mouse girl stands at a mere 4 foot 3 inches in her thick soled half calf length Goth boots. Her size is rather apparent next to the 6ft tall and lanky wolf standing only on his uncovered paws as they walk out of the studio. They then make their way down to the outside.

"I forget how old you said you are, Heindrich." The curvy and small she mouse reluctantly admits. "I'm 29 as of three weeks ago."

I will be 27 in two months." The tall underweight business he wolf states.

They casually make their way to the nicest nearby bar they are able to find, which just happens to be a rather old, but quaint little bar and grill with the wolf not wanting much noise from the clubs at the moment. It's a small full service bar with a 4 table pool hall, and a 15 item menu, but it's quiet and nice. Well maintained too, from the look of it. They both take a seat at the far end of the bar a bit away from the others playing pool and the group of college kids at the other end of the bar.

"Not that social are you?" Roxy questions.

"Drinks? Oh hey Roxy. New pal of yours?" The bartender interjects while offering a paw to the thin wolf, and the eerie yet attractive she mouse orders a rum and coke by simply stating "My usual."

"I'll have a margarita, please. I'm Heindrich. I just bought the apartment complex up the road. I got them cheap because they were in terrible shape, not so bad now though." The scrawny yet tall wolf says while shaking the bloodhounds hand all before responding to the mouse's question as the bartender hound fills the orders. "Nah, I just don't like a lot of noise or huge crowds due to my anxiety issues and mild heart problems. It's partly why I'm so thin. As you notice I'm tall but only weigh about 124 lbs. At 6 foot, that makes me severely underweight. I take it you come here a lot."

"From time to time, yea" says the mouse gal. As the drinks arrive Roxy asks while looking into the wolf's deep blue eyes with an earnest bit of concern, "Do you eat well?"

"Yes, as far as I know. I eat 3 times a day normally. I eat a high protein but small breakfast. My lunch varies some, but I try to eat reasonable if not too busy. Typically it's tea and a nice soup or sandwich. Dinner just sort of depends on my mood and stuff at the time." Heindrich answers. Under the soft dim bar lighting his deep brown and tan fur has a subtle red hue mixed in. The wolf, seeming ill due to his weight, shows he takes good care of himself by having well trimmed and styled short spiked fur for hair and nice name brand western styled dress attire, almost like that of a well know country artist but more businessman oriented. "That's one of the issues I was speaking to my doctor about that day we met."

"I see. Hope it's nothing to serious causing it. I don't need you dying on me after we just started to get to know each other some." Roxy morbidly jokes in her typical way.

"Hehe...yea..." Heindrich says trying to joke in return but shows noticeable concern and discontent at the thought. "Hopefully it's nothing to worry about. I only went because I had been a little tired lately, but I think it's just stress from changing a few things with my business around." He glances over at an empty pool table. "Want to play a few games?"

"Hmm could be." She notices the glance and question. "Sure. Haven't played in a month or two, hope I've still got my game. I'll go easy on ya." she teases.

"Is that so? That's good I think, so long as you're no hustler." The wolf teases back. "By the way, you have the most interesting amber eyes I have ever seen on a mouse."

Roxy blinks a bit and simply says. "Umm, thanks." As they both sand up and head over to play a few rounds of billiards. "Eight ball or nine ball?" She quickly asks before grabbing a rack.

"Let's play eight ball, if that's ok with you." Heindrich excitedly chimes in return while readying a cue after checking to see if it was straight. "Wish I brought my own cue though."

"Same here, I didn't know you shot pool, or I would have." The she mouse replies. "Anyway, all set, you can break."

"Ok," the slender wolf replies then lines up the cue ball for a nice break. His break is superb allowing him good placing to run the table with solids. They play a few games each equally skilled and capable of running the table many times as each proves.

"Your good," the wolf comments on the mouse girls excellent billiards skill.

"Thanks, my dad taught me," Roxy comments. "He used to play professionally. Not bad yourself, where did you learn to play so well?"

"Well, I was self taught at first and was a big hustler when in my teens. Got in a few fights over it, thankfully I was friends with a few folks that were into kick boxing as well as Tai Chi self defense training. As you can see, I'm not built for a fight really. Even so I have taken down a couple of people bigger than me in the past. Don't think I could now though." The wolf chuckles.

As it draws closer to midnight they decide to finish their last couple of drinks and head home before the rest of the crowds do. And they head outside into the nice cool nights air, the streets are still filled with the typical drunks and weekend partiers of this particular Friday night. They seem to be a bit more abundant and rowdier than they did a just a couple of hours ago.

"Thanks for picking up my tab." The mouse speaks up amongst the loud city life. "You know you didn't have to."

"Ah heck, I don't mind. Besides you managed to get me out on the town for once. Well, more than usual anyway. That and you did win a couple more games of pool than I did." The wolf happily laughs. "Was a rather fun time I must say!"

"So does this mean I'll see you more often then?" The mouse teasingly questions.

"Yea, guess so!" Heindrich admits. They continue to walk along the bars but seeing how crowded one of the streets is they decide to take a small shortcut through an alley way that runs behind 2 of the bars, to the next street over, saving them a good 5 minutes or so, and the hassle of fighting the huge crowd at the night club on the street corner.

As they head into to the alley a group of four felines, 2 white tiger males, a female tabby, and a male calico step into the alley at the other end. The two smaller felines are dressed for a rave and look as if they are an item, and the two tigers appear to be football players. All of them seem no older than 20 as they walk closer. The tigers are joking around a bit about their game earlier, as the other smaller felines hold hands and complement their tiger friends on tonight's victory. As they walk past one of the tigers accidentally brushes against Roxy as they pass.

"Hey, watch it ya little runt!" The tiger rudely exclaims.

"Make me you jailbird colored housecat!" The mouse shouts back, turning to stare him down. "Careful who you fuck with cause you may go home on a stretcher!" Heindrich walks up and tries to coax her to just move on, but it's too late.

"Kick her tiny rodent ass, Mitch!" urges the other slightly smaller, but equally as built tiger.

"You got it Blake!" Mitch yells. Roxy quickly readies herself as the two smaller felines complain about the impending fight and standoff in the distance staying out of it. Heindrich tries to get the feisty mouse gal to just follow and leave.

"Come on Roxy, their just a couple of punks. Let's go." The wolf tries to suggest.

"Aww is the poor widdle puppy scared?" Blake taunts while pretending to rub tears from his eyes. He then walks up and shoves Heindrich back a couple of feet. "Run and cry ya scrawny mutt!" Both Tigers laugh hysterically obviously drunk judging from the odor on their breath.

At that moment Roxy round houses the tiger taunting the sickly looking wolf knocking him to the ground. The other tiger, seeming a bit surprised lunges at the mouse girl thinking he can get the best of her. Roxy spins in time to catch his arm mid swing and uses Mitch's momentum to throw him off balance and to the ground, snapping his arm in the process. As he lays there writhing in pain and disbelief, Blake is back up on his feet and tries to catch Roxy off guard, but Heindrich manages to side kick him off balance sending him face first to the ground after separating the knee joint with his bare foot paw. He then sighs a bit and walks over to the other 2 felines holding his hands up in the air showing he means them no harm.

"You may want to get them some medical attention. Sorry we hurt your friends." Heindrich, grimly comments. "Not to prod, but perhaps you both should keep better company."

"They had it coming. I warned them many times that their attitude would get them hurt some day." The male calico softly speaks up. "I'm James. Sorry they started this mess, but maybe now they will think twice from now on. This is my girl, Sheena."

"I'm Heindrich. Nice to meet you, though I wish it was under better pretenses." The wolf looks over to the female tabby with concern. "Is she ok? She seems frightened. Here, take her to get a nice treat and then get her home. I feel bad she had to see this." He reaches for his wallet and pulls out a couple of hundred dollar bills then offers them to the couple.

"I couldn't. That's a lot of money." James politely refuses. At that moment Roxy slowly walks up to see if everything is fine and overhears.

"Just take it. He's a nice guy, a bit stubborn at times though so I doubt he would take no for an answer. Besides, he has plenty to spare." The mouse bluntly interjects. "After all, we did sort of fuck your friends up pretty good. Heh, sorry 'bout that"

"Roxy..... Be polite." The wolf politely scolds. "I mean it, Take the money. Its only fair after what happened. We could have just walked away."

"Not likely. Those two are persistent. Anyway I'm gonna call for an ambulance and tell them what happened. Self defense on your part so I'll just tell em you guys ran off while you had the chance. No questions that way. Thanks for the cash by the way," James kindly replies. "Oh, Here is my number. I would like to chat at a later time when things are not so crazy." The feline hands Heindrich a business card. "Yea, I'm a bit of an artist. That's info regarding my gallery, but it has my personal phone."

"Sure thing." The wolf replies.

"I hope they will be ok...." Sheena quietly sobs through her tears of worry and shock.

"They should be. Couple off broken bones I'm sure, but should heal without any major surgery." Roxy tries to comfort, but isn't that great at it as she is always to blunt.

"What she means is they will be fine, they just need some minor medical attention is all. They won't be playing football for a while or anything, but the rest and time to think will do them some good, right? I have had a broken arm before and I was fine after a month or two. Good as new!" Heindrich comments with a bit of an upbeat attitude making Sheena smile a bit. "Anyway we best be off so you can get them some help. Try and have a decent rest of your night."

"Aye. Thanks. You do the same." James states and then dials 911 on his cell as Roxy and Heindrich Quickly hurry off stopping for a moment for the wolf to kindly hand each injured tiger a hundred bucks, politely showing them that he truly means well and wishes them a fast and full recovery. The two peacefully accept and despite their pain, apologize for their actions.

Roxy and Heindrich hear the ambulances siren in the background as they reach the wolf's apartment complex and head inside and up to his loft. The mouse notices that the wolf is slightly limping. "You ok?"

"Yea I'm fine. It's just a mild sprain at most. I'm not as strong as I was when I was younger. Not that that's much of a difference." The scrawny wolf jokes. "I should be fine by morning." The wolf looks at the time and notices it's about 1:30am "Seems like our little encounter took up quite a bit of time. If you want you're welcome to stay here for the night. The couch folds out into a bed. You can sleep in my private bed area if you would like the privacy, I don't mind. Save you from having to deal with the other drunks."

"You have a point. Thanks. But I'm fine with the couch. I don't feel right taking your bed from you. Besides that couch is quite comfy just as a couch. I'm small enough I could sleep on it as is even. Sorry about my temper by the way." She replies.

"He he if your sure. And it's ok. From what I gather, they wanted to fight and would have kept at it to get their way. Anyway I'm beat so I'm off to bed. There are extra sheets and blankets in that small closet next to the restroom if you want them." The wolf politely offers

"Thanks. Hey. How did you know to take his knee out like that?" Roxy curiously asks.

"Oh that? Remember my friends I spoke of at the bar that I used to hustle pool with? One of them taught me a few things to help me in a bind." He softly comments. "So how about you? You seem to know how to scrap."

"Well I grew up in a rough area, and being as small as I am I got picked on a lot. So my dad decided to put me in a martial arts class. Basic tae kwon do. I later found someone to teach me a bit of krav maga, though I try to not use much of that unless absolutely necessary."

"Wow. Hope I never get on your bad side." The wolf chuckles as he walk into his sectioned off sleeping area. "Anyway, good night. Hope you're able to sleep well. I know I will after the few drinks and excitement."

"For sure. G'night Heindrich. See you in the morning." Roxy says before grabbing her a few blankets and finally laying down and drifting off to sleep on the couch.......
