There Was Once

I like anapestic meter for the same reason I like dactylic meter; it's dramatic and driving. This poem has a simpler rhyme scheme and structure, but the quatrains are varied. The first two lines are in anapestic tetrameter, the third line is in dactylic tetrameter, and the fourth line is in dactylic trimeter with a masculine rhyme. I like the flow of this poem. Stressed syllables are in bold if you want to read it aloud. I recommend it!

There was once a full moon and I stared longing ly At the glow , full of white , out of dark , I was free Cried at the night but re main as a man , and I Turned on my heel , disa ppeared with a sigh

There was once an e clipse and I blind ed my gaze Over whelmed , did I sob for the end of my days Screamed at the pain but re main as a man , and I Lay on the ground , and my skin I de cry

There was once a young boy and I saw in the end All the dreams I had lost in the pa ges I penned Howled at the moon , not a man any more , and now Turned on my kin , to the wolf pack a vow
