Welcome to Nexus: Chapter 4
#4 of Welcome to Nexus: Year One
Arkk suddenly looked out the window. He stared in astonishment at something in the distance. I followed his gaze and saw a large, castle-like building in the distance. It had a large moat around it that appeared to be on fire! It was a liquid-fire moat! There were some of what appeared to be winged horses flying around the building. As I got a closer look, I saw that these "horses" were totally skeletal! They had no skin, muscle, or anything! Just bones and flaming wings, it was amazing how they could fly with so much grace with such impossible wings!
I got so lost in their enthralling flight patterns; I got separated from the rest of the world. Arkk, Cerberis, Kyra, all of them faded as I watched them fly. I followed one singular one for a long time, caught its gaze and stared deep into its sunken eyeholes. I suddenly felt very cold. It was like my whole body was stiffening, turning into...turning into stone! I tried calling out to Cerberis, screaming as loud as I could, but nothing came out. I couldn't break my gaze from the hellish Pegasus that I had been following and I was starting to go numb! I thought I was going to die...I was going to die here, this is the part of my story that I remember as the most prominent. I was beginning to lose sight when it all went totally black and I felt a scaly, cool hand over my eyes. My body heat began to return to me and I felt my body loosen up finally.
"Jarra...Jarra?! Listen to me...just try to close your eyes and focus on something that makes you happy ok?" I heard Cerberis say. It sounded like he was miles away, calling to me through a megaphone. I tried to respond, but I couldn't, so I just did as I was told and forced my eyes closed. I thought about my family, how they loved me and how they would always love me. I thought about my little cousin, Meghan, more like a little adopted sister to me then a cousin and how we would always play in my backyard and in my treehouse. Through all this I could feel myself being lifted high off the floor of the train and felt myself being carried towards somewhere...then I lost total consciousness.
It was hours before I woke up again. When I did, I saw Kyra sitting in a chair next to a bed I found myself laying on.
"Kyra?" I asked and she immediately looked over to me. She knelt right next to my bed and started licking my face tenderly. She seemed ecstatic in the very definition of the word! I waited for a little while before politely nudging her off of me, she seemed still just as happy.
"Nice to see you too!" I said and giggled. "What happened?"
She looked a bit confused, looking up at the ceiling and scratching her head. She took a piece of paper off of the nightstand next to my bed and a pen as well. She began to write.
"I don't know much about it myself, and it's even more difficult when you can't talk...so I'll let Master explain it," she said. I understood up to the part when she said ‘master'. I looked at her
confusedly.
"Master? You mean Cerberis?" I asked her. She nodded and started writing again.
"He's Master to me. It's my own decision," she scribbled.
"Why?" I asked her. My authority issues were arising again. "Why would you want anybody controlling you?"
"Not control," she wrote. "He keeps me safe and loves me; I serve and repay him whenever I can. I love him and I keep him safe when I can and he loves me in return. He's my only family and I'm his."
"What do you mean? Don't you have a mother and a father? Don't you have siblings?"
"Not anymore. They were all lost when Sezzra attempted to make my family slaves."
"Who's Sezzra? Was he a demon?"
"She. And yes...she was a demon alright. One of the most powerful and cold-hearted demons since Lucifer. She was a demon who attempted to destroy the previous Brothers of Impero Scientia. She wanted control. The Brothers had no choice but to fight her off. The war lasted about 6 years, nothing but nonstop fighting between the Brothers and Sezzra. In the end though, Sezzra was caught in an explosion that demolished most of her entire army. The rest were locked away in the Abyss. They checked around the blast site for days, but couldn't find Sezzra's body. It was assumed she was totally decimated in the explosion," then she stopped writing and put the pen down. Kyra rubbed her palm and massaged her wrist with her other hand. She got a cramp from writing so much.
"You think she's alive?" I asked. Kyra nodded slowly. She took the pen up again and scribbled again, her handwriting was terrible this time because of her cramp, but it was legible.
"So they say," she jotted and then turned her head to the door fast. I looked over as well. I saw Cerberis and Arkk walk in and look at me happily. Arkk ran over and actually hugged me! Cerberis walked in casually and looked at me, smiling.
"This is one hell of a start to the new year eh?" he said and chuckled.
"Yea really! What the hell happened?" I asked.
"You locked stares with a Darkmount. Funny things they are, usually makes people go braindead or insane when they catch their gaze. But you were actually about to die! That's something that I've never seen happen. You really must have no experience with demons and stuff like this. That right?" he asked and raised an eyebrow. I nodded. "Thought so."
"Oh, well. At least you're still alive!" Arkk said and stood up from where he was kneeling next to me. God, he was still so fuckin' gorgeous! But I had to distract myself by looking around and trying to figure out where I was. It was some kind of infirmary, a demonic one. It wasn't a usual kind of infirmary either I'll tell you that, but then again what is usual anyway? There were intricately decorated pillars and paintings that covered the walls. There were torches that lit up the room posted on the pillars. As I looked around, I saw no one else in any of the other beds except for me! I guess people didn't get hurt that badly on the first day of school. I started to get up, but Kyra put her hand on my chest. She shook her head.
"She doesn't want you moving yet," Cerberis said. "And I don't think you should just yet."
"Well I appreciate the concern, but I think I'm ready to see what my school is like," I said and stood up. I was a little dizzy, but it passed almost immediately. I looked at the others and saw the strange looks my friends were giving me. They were looking at me funny, and I looked down at myself and saw that I was naked! Oh god, that was one of the most embarrassing moments in the history of my life! I immediately grabbed the sheet and pulled it over my naked body. My face grew red and I started feeling like I was going to cry. A little cry escaped my mouth and I started tying the sheet around my waist.
"Do you guys mind?!" I shouted and they turned around, Arkk's eyes widened and he started giggling and Kyra smiled a little. Cerberis just smirked a little bit. I covered my lower body, but not my upper body. I didn't care. If people saw my breasts, I didn't mind. They weren't my biggest concern. My biggest concern was covering my lower half. If I didn't cover that then people would think I was a slut!
"Ok, you can turn around now," I said and they turned around in unison. Cerberis pivoted on one heel, Arkk just turned around, and Kyra spun in the ball of her foot to face me. They all looked a little confused.
"You know your uh...your...breasts are...uh," Arkk stuttered. It was clear that he didn't have much experience seeing women naked. He demonstrated it on the train as well when he looked at Kyra when she stood up to get a book Cerberis had dropped. He turned to ask him a question the moment she had bent over. The timing couldn't have been more perfect! He started stuttering again and pretended that he forgot what he had said...then went into the bathroom a couple seconds later. This was no different, except this time a saw a little trickle of bright red blood drip from his nose!
"I know Arkk," I said.
"I have an idea," Cerberis said casually. "How ‘bout putting this on before Arkk bleeds to death?"
He handed me a long robe with a red, snake-like design wrapped around it. It was strange, but I could've sworn I had seen the pattern before. Then I looked at Arkk, who was putting a tissue up his bleeding nose and saw his arm. He had the same design tattooed on his body! It curled around his torso, over his shoulder, and spiraled down his left arm, ending in his palm.
It was just...strange.
"Hey Arkk?" I tapped his shoulder.
"Yes?" he said. His voice had gotten much more high-pitched.
"What does this symbol mean?" I pointed to his chest and arm.
"That's the insignia of the school. It's the symbol that was used to contain Sezzra's army when she was defeated. Oh, wait, you probably don't know about Sezzra do you?" he asked.
"I know a bit about her," I said. He looked surprised. "Do you?"
"Well, my father fought against her armies in the war known as the Black War. I know enough about her." He said. "But I'll tell you later. You have to get out there and meet all of your new teachers and classmates!"
I smiled and slid my robe over my head and it fell over the rest of my body. It was extremely comfortable! It was like sliding on an outfit made of silk and clouds!
"Wait, what about my stuff? Is it still on the train?" I asked Arkk.
"No, actually. Cerberis was kind enough to carry it up to our room for you while Kyra and I brought you here. Oh yea, we have the same dorm room by the way," he said and smiled happily.
"Really?! That's awesome! Now I have cool roomies, too!" I shouted and hugged him. He tensed up and then put his two hugely muscular arms around my back. He was really warm! I guess that was to be expected because of his...background.
"Let's go!" I said. He let go of me and we all walked out the door.
