As dawn broke I slowly stirred from my sleep. The events of last night had taken a heavy toll on me. All night worries and questions raced through my mind. I sat up and surveyed the clearing around me. The fire was reduced to charred smoldering logs and the grass was damp with with morning dew. I stood shaking off the tendrils of sleep that clung to me and stretched as shafts of yellow sunlight entered the clearing setting the morning dew shimmering yellow.

I looked over to where the lucario was watching me intently with his big red eyes.

"You're awake!" I said

He continued to stare at me, not saying anything.

I walked over to him carefully trying not to spook him and offered him some water from my canteen.

He didn't say anything but he took it and drank it down quickly. He was probably dehydrated. I had no idea how long he'd been left here. As he drank he seemed to loosen up slightly and his ruby red eyes seemed to soften as he realized I only wanted to help him.

After a few moments I broke the silence

"My name is Anthony. You don't have to talk if you don't want to... There's a pokemon center about a days travel from here. You're hurt badly and I'm not equipped to help you. I'll take you to the nurse joy there and we'll get you taken care of."

He gave me a look that said he understood and looked down at his paws which were bruised and cut all over. I turned to the fire and put on the driest logs I could muster and stirred up the coals.

Soon there was a crackling fire to warm up by and suddenly I realized I was starving! I remembered last night and I retrieved the oats and berries and in a moments a steaming pot of oatmeal bubbled over the fire.

I dished the hot food into my only two bowls and topped them both with berries, giving one to the silent pokemon.

Despite the bland taste of the porridge I ate with a gusto I hadn't known in weeks. I was absolutely starving and the cold had seeped into my bones during the night but the porridge warmed me right up.

I pulled my attention from the meager breakfast and glanced at lucario. He was picking at his food. It seemed he was still really shaken up about whatever had happened.

After a few minutes of silence lucario finally spoke.

"m...master"

His voice was raspy and broken.

I looked over at him and his head was hung low. I dropped my bowl on the grass and shuffled over to him.

"lucario... Are you ready to talk now?

He didn't answer but I continued in a gentle voice.

"Do you have a name?

After a brief moment he spoke

"max..."

"It's nice to meet you max. Do you know my name?"

"Your name's Anthony" he continued weakly.

"Max can you tell me how what happened?"

I saw him tense up as dark memories flooded his mind

"I need to find my master" he said, trying to stand up. As he put weight on his left leg it buckled underneath him and he cried out in pain, falling back to the ground.

"Max you're badly hurt. You've got to relax.

Max knelt on the in the grass as tears welled up in his eyes and rolled down the fur of his cheeks.

I decided it was time to get a move on and after extinguishing the fire I emptied some less than essential items from my pack so max could ride in the main compartment.

After a little while we set off down the trail to the nearest town with a pokecenter.

As we walked Max began to open up a bit. He told me that his master's name was Gary. Gary had always abused him but when he put max up against a high level Onyx Max lost and Gary beat him and threw his pokeball into the forest. As I heard his stories I shuddered. I always knew about pokemon abuse but it was never this real to me. After about an hour of talking Max ran out of energy and fainted. If he was going to make it I had to hurry! I took a few gulps from my canteen and, after checking that Max was secure in the pack, I broke off at a careful run down the rocky trail.

Thats all for now Folks! im so tired... anyway be sure to tune in next time and find out what happens when our heroes arrive at the pokemon center! things are looking grim for poor max but anthony seems determined to save him. Will anthonys desperate efforts be enough? or is it to little too late? Find out in the next flabbergasting chapter of "Abandoned"!
