Comes the Dawn Ch. 1 Breakdown
Zombies everywhere! Oh my
The skies above Houston, Texas were just dead space. Not a plane crossed over the nearly silent city below as signs of a far worse fate now littered the streets in the pre-twilight. Martinez chewed on a butt as most of the cigarette was now ash as distant fire engine honked away toward one of the many fires springing up in the nearly deserted city. It had been three weeks since the first reports of all hell breaking loose and the riots were fierce all over town. He had a his back to a car along with most of the police force as a fresh volley of gunfire erupted from an upstairs window and pattering the ground.
"Freaking pigs! You won't take me alive!" someone roared as another patter of hot lead rained down around them.
"Sanders! Sanders, dammit where is our backup?" one of the cops roared into his mike.
"Backed up in traffic sir," the voice called back.
"What traffic?! The city's been evacuated for weeks. Tell them to get the fuck down here. We're pinned down!"
Martinez wasn't a smoker before all this, now he found just chewing on the foul tasting butt was actually relaxing. "Martinez," the badger man shouted to him, "we need cover."
The young cat spit out the burning butt and nodded, drawing back the action on his MP5 and returning fire as the others fled for safety. Screams from building were interrupted by return fire as Martinez danced his way to the alley with the rest of the crew. He threw his head back against the wall trying to catch his breathe as the badger man crammed another cigarette into his maw.
"Supposed to quit these things. Goddamn end of the world and here I am still sucking on these things."
"I thought we had him boss," Martinez cackled a bit.
"Dumb bastards got them holed up in a room on the second floor of that bank. I don't think they'll last long the way things are." the badger man grumbled.
Martinez shot a glance down at the end of the alley where a newspaper drifted by; still no backup even with all the empty roads out there.
