Chapter 2: Fields of Ruin
Finally got chapter two finished. I haven't edited it, but I will probably go back through at the end and do all the editing there. Thank you to everyone who has followed me up to this point with all my work. I know it's difficult to read a chapter at a time, but I'm trying to make them a bit long. As always, criticism is welcome. If you see something I need to fix then drop a comment below and let me know.
Remus-
The short journey to the field where the cows were was over a lot quicker than I'd liked it to have been. The pasture came into view quickly, spreading over the land farther than I could even see.
Ty pulled me closer to the edge of the trail and slipped his free paw into mine. The simple connection made me feel more at ease than anything, I felt like nothing could go wrong.
As we neared the edge of the pasture, Ty and I ducked inside the treeline to conceal ourselves. We strode through the snow and trees for about five minutes before we finally found a good spot for me to hunker down where I'd be out of earshot and I could still see the cows.
“Remember Ty, if you see anything then I want you to run. Just run and get away.”
Ty’s tail wagged slightly as his ears rotated back a little. “Ray, I'll be fine, I promise. If something goes wrong then I'll beat feet and run back as fast and quiet as I can.” His paw cupped my cheek and I lowered my ears, nuzzling into his paw.
“Be safe.”
He kissed my cheek and pulled back and muttered, “I will,” as he turned and hopped over the fence into the pasture I stared after him, his tail hardly moving, his eyes straight ahead.
After he reached the barn, he turned and looked back at me, then vanished behind the doors. There was nothing I could do, so I sat and waited, playing with the infant that was wrapped firmly in blankets. A smile broke my lips as I envisioned a future where Ty and I lived in peace, no humans attacking us, no ridicule because we are in love… nothing but happiness and maybe even a pup of our own.
My thoughts were interrupted when a yelp echoed through the air. I immediately began to panic as I knew that sounded like Ty.
Moments later there was another yelp louder than the first and my mind set in autopilot. I jumped the fence and sprinted toward the barn as fast as I could, my only thoughts were of Ty.
As I came up to the barn, my paws lost traction and I skirted into the side of the barn, slamming my head hard enough to blur my vision momentarily. I stood again and shook my head to clear the dizziness. My ears perked back as I heard snow crunching behind me.
Fuck, where…
I didn't finish my thought as I heard someone shout “Get that thief! Don't let him get away!” I twisted on my hindpaws and saw Ty streak by a few feet in front of me. There was a bit of red on his shoulder.
No… he didn't…
The couple of Amani chasing him rounded the corner and saw me, shifting slightly as they debated on chasing Ty or focusing on me. After a moment's hesitation, they decided to focus on me, turning their swords to me and charging.
I didn't even think as I drew my own sword, parrying the strike from the Panther on my right. Something splashed my cheek as I reached up and wiped it off. The redness soaked into my fur, slightly discoloring the black. My eyes widened as my ears fell flat, my muzzle pinching into a growl. I didn't know what I was doing, I couldn't even see what I was doing. The Leopard to my left froze in fear as I pulled back my sword and lunged the Panther, slashing at him with all my might… every attack just barely being blocked before I could reach him. My sword collided with his until he finally fell on his tail, a yelp escaping him as it was pinched between him and the ground.
I struck down again, my sword cracking at the edge. I struck again, my blade connecting, but the Panther had angled his sword so mine would slide off the left, minimizing the damage the sword took.
Another!
I became lost, my rage taking over as I tried to regain control.
No! I can't! But… he hurt Ty! But… I don't kill… I won't kill!
I flinched as I felt a pain in my paw… my sword paw. I clenched my fist tighter on my sword and took a deep breath, bringing the blade up… and again crashing it down on the Panther’s sword, breaking it in half.
My breaths were short as I stared down at the Panther below me, his eyes wide with fear. He stammered aga bit before he finally got the words across his lips, “PLEASE! DON'T HURT ME!”
I glanced around him, the fragments of his bloodied sword sprawled across the snow. “You should have thought about yourself before you hurt my fox.” Before I realized what I was doing, my sword was above my head, my paw clenched tight around the handle, my muzzle snarling.
No… this isn't me.
I lowered my sword, my lips softening as my grip loosened. I glanced back down at the Panther beneath me when a scent blew my way. I traced the scent and pinpointed it on the Panther’s groin, his pants damp. I chuckled as I took a deep breath.
My ears shot back as I heard a crunch behind me, remembering I had two opponents.
“Hey, look, we don't want any trouble Ray. We've been good friends for years now…”
I cut him off as I spun, my paw sailing across his muzzle. His balance lost, he fell into the snow face first. “I won't kill you if I don't have to. I don't want to kill… but if I ever see you raise a sword at my fox again… I will end you.” I spun back around and kicked the Panther in the ribs, knocking the wind out of him. “Both of you.”
The Panther and Leopard writhed in pain in the snow. I began to run back to the spot to find Ty when the Leopard coughed behind me “Ray... wait…” I paused for a second, “They… they are looking for you to give you over.” My ears flicked as I began to run again, the voice now faint in the distance. “You can't out run them! They will find you and they will kill you! You and that fox of yours!”
I said nothing, but I ran through the bitter wind back to the hiding spot, looking for any sign of Ty. The wind was blowing harder than it had been a moment ago. “Ty!” No reply… “TY! WHERE ARE YOU!” The wind was picking up even more, the loose snow beginning to whirl around creating a mini blizzard. “TY! ANSWER ME PLEASE!” I couldn't fight back the tears, I could hardly see anymore and the biting wind was piercing my clothes and fur, draining my body heat quickly. I have to find him quick or he could die in this cold. My paw kicked something hard as I tumbled over, my balance lost. I glanced back at what I had kicked and my heart felt like it would burst.
“TYLER!” I turned around and turned him over. His body was ice cold even through his fur. “TY! HOLD ON!” I scooped him into my arms, his weight wasn't heavy, but he wasn't the lightest thing. His head rolled into my chest and his arm fell, dangling. Tears filled my eyes as I searched around for the tree line. My heartbeat quickened, my ears flat and my tail between my legs. Through the snow I finally saw the outline of trees as I dashed forward, leaving all thoughts but Ty out of my mind. Please Ty… hold on… please!
As I got to the fence line, I cradled Ty close to me with one arm, using the other to lift myself over the fence and off the other side. I passed the treeline and the snow calmed, but did not cease. I finally found and spot that was mostly covered by trees and large fallen branches blocking most of the wind. I laid Ty down under one of the fallen branches. In my initial assessment, I found a severe wound on his left shoulder. Likely a gash from the sword the Panther was using. I checked everywhere for a wound before I finally found it… the cause of the second, more hurt yelp I heard. His left calf was split open, frozen blood crusted on the edge.
“No…” A tear trickled down my cheek, dripping into his fur. “No… no no no no NO!” I shook with rage and sadness, my thoughts frantic at how to fix this… I didn't know what to do. Mindlessly, I ripped off a sleeve of my shirt, tying it around his calf with a larger chunk underneath to soak up any bleeding that might begin again. I finished that bandage and tore the other sleeve off, tying it the best I could around his shoulder. “Hang on Ty! I swear I will protect you!”
My paws were a blur of black as I moved with haste in patching my fox and building a makeshift shelter for us. I maneuvered tree branches to form two walls that blocked most of the wind while I gathered as much dry wood as I could find. The area was pretty dead, so there were branches everywhere. Once I felt I had enough wood, I set it in a pile and began to rub. I rubbed two stickers together until my paws were bleeding, but even then I didn't stop.
Only a moment later and I saw smoke rise from the stick. Yes! I can do this! The smoke rose more as I continued to rub the sticker together. Finally, after what felt like years, the sticks both caught fire. I threw them in the pile and the fire spread slowly, almost dying out. I ripped a chunk of my pant leg off and used it to stoke the fire to get it going. “Hang in there Ty… I'll get you warm in no time.”
When the wood finally caught fire, I took off what was left of my shirt and draped it over Ty, standing and turning to make my way into the woods to find the rest of outer stuff… and the human if it hasn't frozen to death.
The wind had died down while I was making the shelter, so the snow wasn't blowing everywhere. I had my direction to the road, so I walked until I found it, then backtracked to where Ty and I first entered the woods to find my hiding spot. I found the spot rather easily, but the only problem is there was no human. Our sacks of equipment were there, albeit strewn all over the place, but the child was nowhere to be found.
Shit! Fucking… I don't even care. I need to take care of Ty before that thing.
I stopped… No, that's not how I normally think. What's wrong with me?
I mindlessly gather all our stuff, stuffing it back into the stacks. A good amount of food had been soiled, so we'd have to hunt some more, but that shouldn't be a problem. I pulled my extra shirt out and began to change as the cold was eating away at my arms.
New shirt on and ready for my backtrack into the woods, I wanted to make sure no one would follow my tracks, so as I went I swiped my tail lightly across the path to remove my paw prints. I hope it snows again so my trail will be covered completely.
When I got back to the camp, Ty was shivering, his body heating back up from the fire. I draped my blanket over the fallen branches to further block the wind and snow from hitting us, reaching into Ty’s sack I pulled out his blanket and draped it over him, pulling out some of the venison we collected this morning to cook.
The drips of fat dropping into the fire filled my nose with a wonderful scent… wanting the meat so bad, but, We have to ration… and I have to give some to Ty… he needs it more than I do.
After tormenting myself with the savory scent of roasting venison, I pulled it off the fire and used my compact knife to cut it up into small pieces to feed to Ty. He was still asleep, so I'd have to work at it to get his food chewed and swallowed.
Once I began to feed him, I realized it was easier than I thought it would be. He almost seemed to wake up as he (mostly) stopped shivering and reached for the food. He actually ate himself, albeit very slowly. Slowly, the pieces dwindled, eventually leaving only a larger piece for myself. My taste buds watering savagely, I but into the meat, slightly charred, no seasoning, but good nonetheless. I took whole bites from the meat, eating quickly to quell the massive hunger I had procured from my… less than polite rescue mission. The juices exploded in my mouth with every new bite, each one juicer and tastier than the last, my tail mindlessly wagging behind me. I had never known how meat ended up tasting so good… it was like heaven, but less than that since I already had a heaven who was asleep beside me. After a few more bites, the meat was gone, only a small portion of my stomach filled.
Ugh, this rationing is going to be harder than I thought.
With that small weight in my stomach, I had a much more clear thought process, my main objective now is the cleanse the wound. I need sterile water and a sanitized blade… both easy to procure as I could melt the snow for boiling water, and heat my knife for a sanitized blade. I pulled the metal bowl out of my bag and filled it with snow, placing it near the fire to heat and melt it.
After the snow was melted, I pulled the knife out of the fire as well, swirling it around in the boiling water a few times. I grabbed my ripped shirt from my bag and used that to safely hold the bowl while I uncovered Ty’s leg exposing the deep wound on his calf.
“I'm sorry about this Ty, but I gotta get that cut clean.”
I slowly poured the boiling water on his calf. As soon as the first drop hit it, Ty was screaming and sitting up, trying his best to pull his leg away, but my grip on his thigh was too much. A few more drops and a lot more screams. I knelt on his leg to hold it still.
“I'm sorry Ty, I have to do this! Your wounds must be cleaned!”
My words were lost over his screams, my red hot knife searing his flesh as I cauterized the wound closed. Once the wound was closed, I let up off his leg. He writhed in pain, his ears flat, tail between his legs, and his eyes scrunched closed. He clawed at the skin on his shin, his mind refusing to allow him to touch the cut itself.
After a few moments of watching him, I couldn't take much more. My eyes streamed with tears as I pulled his torso and head into my chest, resting my chin on top of his head. His flailing calmed and his breaths slowed to a steady rhythm.
“Okay Ty, you ready for round two?”
As he finally relaxed again, I set him back down, a few more tears welling in my eyes as I prepared for another go at sterilization and screaming.
Ty-
I rolled over, my arm draped across Ray as I slowly opened my eyes, blinking away the fogginess. When I finally opened my eyes all the way, I saw his cute face still asleep, undisturbed. I brought my paw up to his face, stroking his cheek with my claws. His eyes fluttered open, but they weren't their normal color. The irises were white and the rest of his eyes were black. A lump built in my throat as I stared into those ice cold eyes. I was frozen, paralyzed as I couldn't move my body, not even look away.
Suddenly my body tensed as I fell through the bed. I could move again, but that didn't help in my state of freefall through the darkness. Panic set in my heart as my calf suddenly lit on fire, the searing pain coursing up my body, burning me from the inside. My veins exploded in agony all the way up to the back of my left shoulder where another spike of burning pain set my heart ablaze. The pain burned my flesh though no fire was present. I couldn't form words, all I could do was scream, so I did, as loud as I could. I didn't think about what to scream, so I screamed the one word on my mind, “Ray”.
Suddenly, the burning stopped. I felt a warm embrace around my body as it felt like something had laid next to me, something warm. My heart relaxed as the easy warmth spread over my body. When I glanced around, I say a pair of black paws encircle my midsection, squeezing me gently, their warmth was welcoming, but as quickly as they came, they left. Instead being replaced with a cold furless hand. The hand wrapped up stomach, squeezing tight enough to make me feel like I would break. The incredible weight left me unable to process thoughts, my mind not finding anything to say or do the get me out of this. The arm split in two, the new hand snaking up over my shirt as it came to rest on my neck, like the previous, squeezing.
I gasped, trying to fight for air, but my windpipe felt crushed. As if even if the hand let go, I still couldn't breath. I tried to fight back, tried to pull the hand away, but my arms were pinned to my sides by the other arm. I slowly choked, my vision fading as darkness began to set in, the edges of my vision slowly receding.
The last bit of light left my eyes, my throat no longer seized for air, my lungs fell flat, and my ribs crushed in. The pressure left my neck and stomach as once again the coldness set in. My dead body being encased in an icey shell. As soon as it was finished, it cracked, the cracks and chips flowing quickly until finally my whole body shattered.
“TY!”
My eyes shot open, a cold sweat running down my forehead, matting my fur down.
“Ty! You okay babe?” I glanced over to him, his ears were flat and his face was strained with worry and fear. I slowly sat up, wincing at the pain I felt in my shoulder.
“I don't… what happened? Where are we?” I glanced around, the makeshift shelter was small and quickly thrown together.
“You got attacked by Rinix and his brother on the farm. I guess friendship doesn't excuse homosexuality.” He paused and glanced around, his nerves seeming to calm down a bit as his tail began wagging quickly. “Your shoulder and calf were cut badly, I didn't see quite what happened. You ran past me and away as you made a break for the treeline. I stayed back to cover your escape, but you never fully made it back. Once I subdued the two, I ran to find you, but a small snowstorm picked up and I could hardly see a foot in front of me.” He paused again… presumably to see if I had any questions, but I just nodded. “Well, I kind of tripped over you on accident. You weren't moving and I immediately assumed the worst…” He trailed off, tears welling in his eyes. I opened my mouth to say something, but he cut me off, continuing with the story. “I picked you up and carried you back into the woods and wrapped your wounds, made a shelter and started a fire. Went back to grab the human and our supplies, but the human was gone...”
I choked at the mention of this, “Wait… the human… the child is gone? Where?!? How?!?”
Ray stumbled over his words a bit trying to answer quickly, “I… I… I don't know… I got to the holdout area and it was just gone. Basket, blankets, and everything! No paw prints were visible, so I assume someone stole it while I was fighting the brothers and looking for you before the storm!”
My rage built steadily, “What?!? It's just gone?!? Why didn't you go look for it?”
Ray raised his voice just enough to hold me still, “I didn't want to leave you! I'd rather have a shitty life with you than a peaceful one with it! I love you too much!” Tears streamed down his cheeks as he huffed, wrapping his arms around himself.
“Ray…” I reached out and grabbed his shoulder, but was met with an instant hug, his arms secured around my midsection, his muzzle in my good shoulder, as he sobbed, tears just flowing out. I clasped my paws on his back as his shoulders spasmed with his gasps.
“I thought you were dead! I thought you would never wake up again! I couldn't leave your side!”
I let out a shaky breath, “It's fine Ray, how long have I been asleep? Only a few hours?”
Ray pulled back, his eyes red and his cheeks had tear trails, “Seven days.”
Again, I coughed, sputtering out, “SEVEN DAYS?!?”
Ray simply nodded. His eyes falling to my lap as he shuffled his paws around in his own. “I've been feeding you most of the deer we killed before. We are almost out of it. I didn't want to leave you alone so I've made do with rationing. We have one meal left.”
My eyes widened, “How have you made one deer last the two of us seven days?”
“I've given you most of it, taking only a few bites for myself.” His sheepish grin meant he wasn't lying. I looked at his body… it was much skinnier than it used to be. His muscle mass had worn down slightly. Altogether it looked like he'd lost nearly fifteen pounds of muscle.
“You're starving yourself! You need food! Don't worry about me, go find food for yourself!”
His eyes wavered, his body seeming to want to go, but at the same time stay. A pain shot through my shoulder and I lurched forward and grabbed it.
“Ty!” His paw was on my back in moments, his other roaming about trying to comfort me.
“I'm fine Ray. I can handle it.”
He steeled his gaze, his mind being made up. “I'm not going to leave you. What if something happens while I'm gone?”
This time it was my turn. My eyes focused, my resolve hardening, and my ears laying back. “No, nothing is going to happen Ray. It's just some pain. I'll be in it whether you're here or not. Go find more food for us. We need it or we won't survive.”
He backed down, sitting back on his hind paws he dropped his gaze to the ground. “Okay… you're right. We need more food or we won't make it…” His tail began to wag slightly again, “But we only have about two hours before we start moving again.”
My bewilderment must have been expressed as he quickly jumped into an explanation. “Every day about this time, I pack up camp and move until I am too tired to keep going. I've made a lot of ground over the past few days. More than we had originally planned in the seven day period.”
My heart was hurting. I had gotten injured and left the entire burden on his shoulders for seven days. “You kept going even though I couldn't move… let alone wake up?”
He broke a small smile, “Well I figured if someone found our hideout and took the human… then they could find us and wouldn't hesitate to attack again. That's why I haven't left your side… for fear they've been waiting for me to turn my back.”
Again my heart sank… he's been enduring very little food, an extreme burden of weight, and the prospect of carrying me morning noon and night for the last seven days… just to make sure I was safe? I glanced around and found his bow a few feet to my left. I leaned over and grabbed it along with his knife.
He inched closer to me, his eyes shooting between his bow and my eyes, “What are you doing Ty?”
I began to carve into the wood of the recurve… something I hadn't done in years. It was the best way I could make sure he could feel me with him. Next to my name (which I had carved myself as well) I carved a wobbly looking fox that was holding a bow, pulled back and ready to shoot. Being very sloppy at art things… it didn't look like a fox… more like a wolf… but the point was conveyed. The fox was positioned so when Ray would draw back, he could see the fox, also aiming at his target. I handed it back to him, my cheeks feeling a bit warm as he surveyed my work.
“Ty…” His face scrunched up as he looked it over, “It's… thank you.”
My cheeks burned red as I opened my muzzle to reply, but was caught off guard as his lips collided with mine. He brought a paw up to rub my ear, the caress inviting a welcome feeling in my crotch as my pants grew uncomfortably tight, but just as quickly as he started, he let go, the welcome feeling being replaced by one of emptiness.
He grunted softly has he grabbed the last few arrows he had left and stuffed them in his quiver. “I'll be back within the hour. With or without food…” His back was to me, but he turned his head a bit to the left to look back. “If something happens, scream as loud as you can?”
It sounded more like he was questioning himself as to if he could get back in time to help me. All I could do was nod as I watched him leave, my heart pounding in my chest.
A soft breeze blew through my fur, the icy chill numbing my arms and chest as I finally realized that I didn't have a shirt or pants on… I only had underwear.
I blushed heavily as I shuffled around, wincing at the pain that shot through my calf. I pulled my bag to me, shifting through the contents to find the extra gear I had packed. I tried to dress, but that proved to be a bit difficult. After taking ten minutes to shuffle my one pant leg on, I slipped into my shirt and started rummaging around the camp to find something to occupy my mind… which always returned to Ray. His soft black fur. His gentle blue eyes, as well as his strong muscles.
My mind swam with images of him as I mindlessly dug in my bag for no item in particular. I couldn't focus on anything except him… I could see his eyes gazing back at me as he glided to me, his lips meeting mine in an instant with no hesitation. I ran my paw down his satiny black fur… every valley and hill of his muscle implanted in my memory. I could feel the pulse in his arms of his flexing muscles as he roamed my body, his feverish paws never setting in one place, but I was working at a more leisurely pace. I traced back up his biceps with a finger, padding my way down his pectoral and rested there, giving it a gentle squeeze. Ray’s paw moved farther down my back, coming to rest on my rump for a quick squeeze before restarting its journey south, scooping under my thigh. He pulled my leg high to his waist as he leaned forward using his other paw to balance us. My back rested on the warm blanket with him on top of me, his muzzle still locked to mine as our tongue intertwined around each other. He let a lusty moan escape his throat as he again ravaged my body with his paws, tracing over every inch of me. I felt his paws cup my hips before one moved to my crotch, rubbing my sheath through my leather pants. I couldn't help the moan that escaped into his muzzle as my sheath tingled with excitement, my pants growing tighter by the second.
Suddenly, Ray pulled away from me, pulling all the way off and standing up. His now piercing red eyes glared down at me, unbridled rage oozing from behind them.
“Finally found you slut.”
His voice was cold and sharp, but sounded nothing like him. In a moment, Ray had totally vanished, my surroundings coming back into view as I realized where I was. I looked up to see a dark figure standing at the base of a tree, it's eyes seeming to glow with pure hatred.
“Don't think you're gonna get away this time. Your lame and can't even run. I should put you out of your misery.”
The figure stepped closer, the faint light filtering through the trees above. His body was big and bulky, covered completely in leather armor save his head, the familiar features of the Doberman came into view as he stepped into the light.
