Arcadia Rising Chapter 1: The Arrival
This is a story idea that I had cooking up in my mind for a while now and I have finally gotten around to writing it. As most people will pick up on its set a one year from now, I want everyone to know I'm not taking a swing at President Donald Trump or the way he is running the USA, this is simply a "What If" scenario where a highly advanced culture has suddenly appeared on earth and how humans are likely to react based on the social status of the world today.
Qantas flight 5588 over mid Pacific Ocean 2018.
The Airbus A 380 flew over the ocean at 34,000 feet on autopilot. In the cockpit, the three crew members conducted yet another routine check on the health of the aircraft. Due to the pilots being so engrossed in checking the flight computers, they didn't see the white flash in front of the cockpit windows.
"That's another routine check done mate." Said the captain in the left hand seat looking at his first officer.
“Again with the checks, why do we have to do them so often?" the third member of the flight crew said with a heavy sigh, compared to the two more experienced pilots who had been flying Airbus A 380's for most of their careers he was relatively new only been assigned as a fill in after the usual crew member came down with a case of Glandular Fever.
"Air carrier rules rooky, we have to do these checks every hour to check the rate of fuel we use and the condition of the airplane. And there is still more to go, we have three more checks left before we land in Sydney." Answered the first officer in the right-hand seat he looked up from his console to continue to look out over the star lit horizon. It was at this moment that he saw a white flicker causing him to look at the weather radar between the pilots. All what the human male saw was the same thing he had seen for the past several hours, noting at all. "I swore I saw a white flash in the distance, but no thunder storms in our path. Must be heat lighting."
The pilot looked at the sky ahead seeing only darkness with thousands of stars in the sky, his instincts told him to watch both the sky outside and the weather radar just in case there was a glitch so he did, like a person trying keep an eye on two things at once he glanced at the weather radar again then looked back at the horizon, all of a sudden another flash of light erupted in front of the plane revealing to the crew that they suddenly found themselves on a collision course with a very large mountain.
The ground proximity unit blared in its' mechanical voice, "Pull up terrain, pull up terrain!"
The captain disconnected the autopilot out of habit pulling back on the control stick pushing the throttles forward. His auto habit of the movement saves the lives on the airliner, but while the aircraft climbed to 36,000 feet he could not help but wonder how the hell a mountain just suddenly appeared right in front of them, he turned to his co-pilot "Where the fuck did a 35,000 foot tall mountain came from?! Planet Earth doesn't have mountains that high, does it?"
Pentagon, Washington D.C.
"Its 1.5 million square miles, roughly half the size of Australia. Here's the latest photographs from one of our KH-11s." The Air Force Colonel said handing the photos to a General.
The General looked at the photos, they depicted a very large land mass located between the Hawaiian Islands and the country of Australia. He took note of the islands unusual shape being that of a number 9 with the bulge pointing west and a very tall mountain range to its south, "So a Qantas flight was the first aircraft to encounter this place?"
The Colonel looked at his notes, "Yes sir, it was a routine flight from Los Angles to Sydney flying at 34,000 thousand feet. The ground proximity warning device warn them that the aircraft was going to crash into the land masses highest mountain. Luckily the Captain took over control and did an emergency climb to 36,000 feet, the Australian incident board is interviewing the crew as we speak."
"Get a U-2 prepped for a better look of this island that decided to show up out of the blue." The General said looking at the photos of the island.
Several hours later, The White House, Washington D.C.
“As you can see Mr. President, the land mass is 1.5 million square miles and its highest peak is 35,000 feet high" the Airforce General explained, it was no surprise he was on edge this was the first time he had to deal with President Donald Trump and he was worried, he had heard the Rumors of how he acted around his staff plus the president's approval ratings had taken a massive slide which had made the man quite irritable.
The President sat at his desk looking over the pictures taken by the KH-11 and the U2 in silence, he seemed to be mulling it over with great interest but as with everyone in the world he was skeptical, for all he knew this was some elaborate prank the Air-Force had gotten wind of and jumped but then again, the reports claimed that an Airbus A380 had almost crashed into this mysterious land mass, “do we have access to the Black Box recordings?" he asked looking the General.
“Yes, we do as a matter of fact, our best men are analyzing the data as we speak" the general replied, he was about say that they would get the results momentarily when one of the Presidents aids walked in.
“Mister President, sorry to barge in but there is something you have to see" she said handing over an electronic tablet, Donald Trump took the tablet from the woman's hands and looked at what it was displaying.
Donald Trump didn't move for a good seven minutes before handing the tablet back to the woman, “contact Sean Spicer and tell him to get over here as soon as possible" he said
“Yes sir" the aid said and left at a pace to do her assigned task, as she left the office the president turned back to the General “well looks like the whole world knows about our mysterious new continent".
The General looked back confused, 'what did the president mean by that?' he thought before clearing his throat, “what do you mean by that sir?" he asked.
For the first time during the meeting the president smiled and gave a small chuckle, “the image on the tablet my aid gave me was a Google Earth image, the satellites updated not too long ago and there is now a new viral sensation buzzing around the Internet."
Whitehouse, the following morning
Sean looked out over the packed room, journalists from every news network and paper were here and poised to fire a ton of questions to trip him up, he spotted one which he knew very well sitting in the front row. The young 24-year-old woman had Raven black hair and her green eyes that seemed to pierce the soul, Sean knew she was always one the first to ask the tough questions which made him feel more uneasy than he did before he entered the room. 'Well time to bite the bullet' the 45-year-old thought as he took a deep breath, went over his notes one last time then approached the lectern to begin, as he stepped up the room fell into almost total silence apart from the sound of the odd camera shutter going off here and there.
“Good morning, and thank you all for coming" he said as confidently as he could while making eye contact with the crowd as he set himself up behind the lectern. “At 01:30 hours on March the Fifth of this year Qantas flight 5588 on route from Loss Angles to Sydney Australia was traveling over the pacific at an altitude of 34,000 feet when it encountered an unforeseen obstacle, according to eye witness reports a mountain higher than Mount Everest had suddenly appeared in front of them in what they described as “a flash of light", never the less the flight made it to its destination un-harmed with the exception of a few startled passengers which in turn sparked a full investigation by the Australian incident board." he was about to continue when the room burst into a cacophony of questions from the press, keeping his cool he held up his hand in an attempted to indicate to them to stop and wait, within minutes the press quieted down leaving only one person still standing, the woman in the front row.
“Mr. Spicer, I know this should wait until after you are done but the public need to know. Is this all an elaborate hoax or are we dealing with something real?" the woman asked looking the Press secretary dead in the eye.
“Well Miss Samson, I was just about to touch on that subject" Sean Retorted with a smile, “As I was about to say, at 02:30 hours, US Airforce officials at the pentagon received satellite imagery of a mysterious new land mass that had suddenly appeared around the time of the encounter, further investigations show that the land mass is roughly 1.5 million square miles in size and is home to a highly-advanced culture. There has been no indication that the people of this new “Island" as we are dubbing it are in any way, shape or form hostile toward us, however I have been assured by the President that if they do turn out to be hostile then they will be dealt with accordingly."
Once again, the room became a cacophony of voices all trying to get their questions answered by Sean, he was about to quell the rabble when there was a large bang, the ceiling of the room burst open showering everyone in plaster, journalists screamed as several chunks crashed down on them only resulting in minor injuries. Sean who had quickly taken cover behind the lectern during the incident slowly came out of hiding surveying the scene as he did so, the room had been set up with three isles so that the occupants could leave the room in case of an emergency or if someone needed to duck out to answer a call of nature but now played host to an impact zone with metallic sphere the size of a large rock melon sitting in a sizable indent in the floor and another equally sizable hole in the roof. “someone get an explosives disposal expert in here immediately!" he heard one of the security agents yell out while others were working to evacuate the media personal as quickly as possible.
“How rude, and here I was trying to deliver a message and you apes have the nerve to call me an explosive device" said a strange voice, the voice seemed to be distorted as if it were coming from a computer, “so if you are all finished panicking as if the sky is falling on your heads I will deliver my message".
Sean was the first to identify where the voice was coming from, clearing his throat he walked from behind the lectern toward the strange orb that had now sprouted a set of eight spider like legs from its southern hemisphere, “well before you deliver your message it would be polite of you to introduce yourself, also if I may be so bold as to ask…" he said approaching the device but was cut off when the machines northern hemisphere opened up revealing a smaller sphere with a large red optic sensor in its centre that opened and closed as if it were a real eye, the sphere also seemed to convey emotions that surprised him.
“Just let me stop you there Mr. Spicer, and yes, I do know your name as my creators did their research before sending me here, first thing I'm not some remote spy drone sent here to evaluate this planets defences, I'm a fully self-aware Artificial intelligence whose primary function is to facilitate the transmission of pre-recorded messages and two-way communication with my creators. Secondly, I do like my job thank you very much because I get to travel to new and exciting places and I do get paid for it" the machine said before it swung its eye one hundred and eighty degrees on its horizontal axis so it was now “looking" at the bewildered Journalists and cameramen who were looking on from the back of the room. “what? artificially created life forms are consumers as well, someone must pay for maintenance and repairs… and the odd software upgrade occasionally, but I digress, I have a message to deliver so do you want to view it or not?"
“Very well, please play your message Mr. … um" Sean replied trying to not look flustered, the device swung its red eye back to him and made an expression which he interpreted as a smile.
“My designation is Communication Spider Probe SP-3358724, but most people call me Sparky" the device said with a prideful tone before moving its eye toward the ceiling, the eye changed its glow from red to blue and then made a sound as if it were clearing it throat, “ladies and gentlemen of the United States of America, I bring you a message from Archon Camulus Asteroth, leader and ruler of the people of Arcadia" it said in a voice that sounded like someone introducing the host of an old 80's game show, complete with recorded audience applause. Like a well scripted sequence in a movie the glow in Sparky's eye intensified then shot a beam of light toward the ceiling that fanned out to form a cone, seconds later a hologram of the Archon appeared within the blue cone of light causing many of the journalists to gasp in awe then turn their expressions to shock and surprise at what they saw.
Many of the people who were present expected to see some sort of alien from science fiction not an anthropomorphic male Lion wearing what appeared to be a cross between a set of vestment robes and a business suit. the image of Camulus bowed slowly to the crowd of people in what most would assume was the traditional Arcadian greeting, “Greetings humans of earth, if you are watching this message then the Communications Spider Probe has made it safely to your nation. Our arrival may have been sudden and most of you will have questions but rest assure we mean you no harm, all we wish for is mutual and peaceful coexistence where we can all live without the tyranny of war and enslavement as well as a chance at a bright new future. To that end we wish to open a dialogue with your world leaders so we can begin to build bridges and gain a better understanding of both our peoples, each Spider Probe is equipped to transmit a reply message directly back to our fare nation as well as facilitate two-way communication if you so desire, we eagerly await your reply" said the hologram before the image distorted then disappeared from view.
It took everyone about minute to take stock of what just happened, in that time Sean found himself pinching his arm to see if he was dreaming. When he finally came to his senses he closed the gap between Sparky and himself, picked the small Automaton up of the floor and returned his gaze to the crowd of journalists “This Press conference is adjourned" he said before turning on his heels and walking at a brisk pace out the room, it didn't take Sparky long to ascertain he was being relocated but to where was the question.
“So, Mr Spicer, where are we off to now?" he asked turning his eye to Sean, by now the optical sensor had returned to its ruby red glow and was expressing a look of confusion.
Sean lifted the little automaton till it was eye level with him and smiled, “Son, we are on our way to meet the President of the U.S.A" was all that he needed to say as he marched down the corridor toward the Oval Office.
