Sproing!
At some beaches, a bad decision can lead to only a life-long commitment to "Never speak of this again." At others, fair or unfair, you only get to make one bad decision.
This is based on the silly Sproing! comic, which is nevertheless quite grim as it does not take place at a reforming beach and so features very permanent consequences for a boy and his mother.
Bobby was a chubby boy, about four and a half feet tall and carrying an unruly shock of off-blond hair. He was nine years old, not very smart, and a bit of a troublemaker. His favorite thing to do was go to the beach and poke, prod, or otherwise torment whatever wildlife he could find. This was why, even though his birthday was in two weeks, Bobby would never be ten years old.
"Remember Bobby, don't bother the animals," his mother said as they reached the sand. Bobby just laughed and ran off. His mother knew about his bad habits, but she was both lazy and neglectful. She did the absolute minimum to keep him in check and ignored his misdeeds as long as she didn't see them.
It was a weekday and just past noon, so there weren't many people on the beach. No one paid addition when Bobby ran over to a pier piling and started whacking mussels with a stick.
Mussels are long-suffering shellfish accustomed to being battered by surf, pulled open and eaten alive by starfish, and should they come loose from their moorings, either cracked open by seagulls that smash them against rocks or swallowed whole by sea anemones. All of these things were fatal but as brainless little bivalves all they could hope for was that someone else would get eaten instead of them.
Whacking mussels is boring when they don't scream or fight back so Bobby decided throwing rocks at seagulls was more fun. He'd never hit one, as they either took off or swerved out of the way when they saw him throw, but at least they reacted.
Bobby did this sort of thing every time he came to the beach, but today he hit the jackpot. An oblong rock in the shadows of the pier turned out to instead be a sleeping seal.
It was a fat torpedo of the animal, with smaller side and back flukes than a sea lion. A sea lion has visible, if oddly shaped "forearms" and "calves" that end, like a seal's, in a paddle-like "hands" and webbed "feet" respectively. A seal lacks some of that. It just has paddled and webby flippers sticking right out of its body, the rest being concealed by its thick coating of fat.
It was a modest-sized seal, about as long as Bobby was tall if you left off its flippers and head. Just the same it weighed as least three times as much as the boy and was a ponderous fat tube-beast out of water.
To the surprise of no one who knew Bobby, the moment he saw the seal he grabbed the stick he'd dropped only moments before and started poking the seal.
Awakened from its peaceful dreams by the boy's prodding the seal grunted unhappily and tried to worm its way down to the waves. Before it could build up any speed Bobby ran in front of it. Each way it turned the boy was in the way and it found itself facing the rocks with a stick poking it in the back.
Irritated by the constant harassment and not being fond of humans in the first place, the seal made a fateful decision. It braced its foreflippers against the sand and with an abrupt flex of its long body it flipped itself into the air.
Bobby had no idea seals were capable of such a thing, having only seen them as furry lumps draped over the breakwater or snoozing "rocks" stretched out on the sand. The seal sprang from the beach, twisting in midair so it came down on him muzzle-first.
"Ooh," said Bobby at this marvelous sight, just as the seal opened its mouth. The boy just had time to see a flash of fangs opening to reveal a slick chute of gullet before there was a wet thump and everything went dark.
"Uh," said Bobby, who was suddenly wrapped in hot, slimy flesh. The seal's weight had driven it over him all the way to the knees and he felt the scrape of fangs wrapped around his upper calves. The weight of the seal bore down and it slid slid still further over him, a strange boy-shaped bulge standing out of its fat body as it swallowed him whole. By the time Bobby began to genuinely worry about what was happening the seal's fangs were sunk into his socks and only his sneakers were outside its maw.
With wet stomach pressing in from all directions Bobby found his arms pinned to his sides by a thick layer of seal fat. Quite a lot of him was still in the seal's gullet but thick droplets of stomach fluids were soaking through his T-shirt and stinging his skin. What air was available rose though the acid and accumulated at the bottom of the stomach, which fortunately or unfortunately where his face was. There was plenty of air to breathe as he was swallowed alive.
He was still standing up, though, and with a penguin-like waddle he managed to turn back the way he came. As well as he could figure it out, anyway, what with four inches of seal fat between him and the outside world. He took a few unsteady steps and a man down the beach shook his head at the sight of the wobbling, bowling-pin-shaped creature near the pier.
"These mascots get weirder and weirder," the man muttered, and returned his attention to his fishing line.
"Uh, mom?" Emerged a voice from inside the seal. The penguin-like shape with the flippers on top and sneakers sticking out the bottom turned one way and then the other, blindly looking for the woman.
"Remember when you said not to bother the animals?" Said the muffled voice from beneath a thick layer of fat. Just then Bobby stumbled over a hummock in the sand. With a thump the two conjoined creatures hit the sand and the seal let out a grunt. A wave of impact traveled through its fat and Bobby, though dizzy and confused, knew something had just happened.
"Is anyone out there," said the boy, just as the seal heaved its head up off the sand. With a stretch of its nose it got its jaws around Bobby's sneakers and the boy felt a squeeze around his calves as the creature's throat tensed down. For the first time Bobby felt real alarm but it was too late. The seal swallowed with all its might and a great contraction of its throat muscles sent Bobby sliding heavily into its lengthy stomach.
"Oog," the seal complained, for the now panicked Bobby began to squirm and thrash inside it. It was a very big meal and despite a belly that stretched the length of its torpedo body, part of the human was still in its throat. The massive bulge in its long body changed shape as Bobby tried to worm his way free of the fleshy trap. The seal knew, though, that soon the struggle would end, and that with enough time its stomach juices would dissolve the first parts of its meal, making room for the rest to slide into its stomach. It had swallowed large fish before. It could digest a meal like Bobby. It merely needed time.
It had swallowed a great volume of air with its meal and its fanged jaws parted to let out a long belch. One of Bobby's sneakers, pulled off the boy's foot by the undulations of the seal's swallowing muscles, shot wetly from its maw to land on the sand. The other stayed on its foot, for all the good it did the boy. Bobby's feet were safe in the gullet for now. It was the rest of him that had problems, namely the acids flowing in as the seal's stomach reacted to the arrival of a meal. These stung Bobby all over and he redoubled his struggle.
Uncomfortably aware of the squirming boy inside it but far too stubborn to let its tormentor back out, the seal turned once more toward the rocks. It twitched and shuddered as it wormed its way into the shadows under the pier, thrown from side to side by the internal struggle.
For all his desperation to escape the slimy digestive fate he found himself facing, Bobby was just a boy. Wrapped in a thick layer of seal he soon exhausted himself. By the time the seal found a cool, quiet place to stretch out among the rocks the struggle was all but over. Stomach acids trickled in to replace the air the seal burped up and Bobby was stretched out in a caustic coffin of seal stomach, too exhausted to struggle any more and with nothing to breathe but acid.
There was a last twitch inside the seal, then stillness. Satisfied, it licked its chops and settled down to sleep off its meal. But the digestion of that bulky human morsel was not to be as peaceful as it hoped.
Bobby's mother killed an hour or so watching men's beach volleyball, admiring the players and then moving on to the pier with its many small shops. Flirting with a handsome fisherman consumed more time but eventually she glanced at her watch and decided they should go. If they dawdled on the beach much longer the freeways would fill with traffic. So, reluctantly, she went looking for her son.
"Where is that boy," she muttered as she combed the beach for her son. "Can't leave him alone for one minute."
She spotted something on the sand. "Is that one of his shoes?" It was! She'd gotten the off-brand superhero shoes from a seconds store and she'd never seen another pair. In the damp sand she also found a stick like the one she saw him pick up earlier, and a few footprints. There was a peculiar series of furrows in the sand leading away from the shoe, under the pier. Was he dragged off?
What she should have done was call the beach patrol. What did did instead was follow the trail between mussel-covered rocks, where she discovered a sleeping seal.
She only needed one look to know what had happened. The lumpy bulge deforming the seal's torpedo body could be only one thing.
She can be forgiven for reacting as she did. What she should have done, once again, was fetch the beach patrol. They would know how to recover Bobby's body and that was all that was left to be done. Even if it had swallowed him only moments before there was just no way to get him out of the seal's stomach before he suffocated.
An expert on the subject - and there were an increasing number of those thanks to something called Friendly Beaches - would know at once from the lack of struggle and the smoothness of the bulge that Bobby was already dead, and in fact well on his way to being digested. But expert or no, most people would look at the bulge and realize that the best that could be hoped for was to recover her son's body more or less intact.
What she did ensured that she wouldn't be getting any older, any more than Bobby would. It was still an understandable reaction.
"You!" She snapped. The seal started awake, unable to see her past the bulge of its belly but aware someone was down by its hind flippers.
"SPIT!" Bobby's mother growled, "HIM!", and her foot slammed into the long bulge of the seal's sheath, "OUT!"
A male seal's penis is buried under its hide and fat, protected from cold water until it is needed. Likewise, its testicles are hidden away internally. Just the same, the sharp blow to its groin sent waves through its fat and hurt almost as much as it would were its balls out on display like a man's. Tears started from the seal's eyes and its instant, angry reaction was as understandable as the mother's rage.
It saw her step forward to kick it in the sheath and as she did she put its hind flippers right under her rump. The seal snapped its flippers up against her butt, sending her hurtling forward over its fat belly and right into its suddenly wide-open jaws.
Bobby's mother had for an instant a view much as her son had, past yellowed fangs and fleshy pink tongue into a purple chute of throat. Unlike her son's view, this one included, deep in the gullet, a shoe and a foot wrapped in a sodden sock. The seal still hadn't managed to fit all of Bobby into its stomach. That didn't stop it from sending her down its throat as well.
There was a wet thump and the scrape of fangs as her momentum sent her into the seal's maw. Bobby's shoe struck her cheek with bruising force on the way by, for she flew into the seal's jaws with such force that it engulfed her past the breasts before she came to a stop.
Stopped, but only for a moment. Before she could put up a struggle, the seal's foreflippers wrapped around her and shoved her deeper. With a series of gulps the seal swallowed her whole, as irritated at the woman who kicked it in the groin as it had been at her son. All she could do was kick as she was eaten, and her shoes just bounced off the sea beast's thick layer of fat.
It was not a big seal, not much bigger than its meals put together, but swimming builds up a lot of muscle and under the fat the seal was a powerful creature, far too strong for her to resist. It ducked its muzzle down toward its belly as its foreflippers pushed her in, and in all too short a time Bobby's mother found herself sliding into a stomach already occupied by her partially digested son.
It was immediately obvious, even in the sloshing dark, that Bobby was very dead. As her face slid past his she felt the bone, for the seal's stomach juices had already dissolved the flesh away. Where his flesh remained it was spongy and half liquefied. Only the bones were intact and not for very long. The seal habitually swallowed its prey whole and Bobby's bones, along with hers, wouldn't be difficult to digest. It was merely more time consuming to break down an entire human than a much smaller fish.
With a last toss of its muzzle it got the mother's feet in its jaws and swallowed them down. Already oddly bulged from its previous meal the seal resembled more than ever a fat torpedo, its furry pelt stretched thin over its prey.
Horrified to find her half digested son waiting for her in the seal's stomach, Bobby's mother tried to fight her way free. She had even less chance than he had. Bobby slid into an empty stomach and the acid took time to get flowing. He'd lasted several minutes before suffocating. His mother instead arrived in a gut busily digesting a large meal and it was full of acid and liquefied flesh. Her first frantic attempt to suck in a breath was her last.
"Look, mommy," a passing child said as she walked by the pier. In the shadows down among the rocks, just in view, a gorged seal let out a long burp and rolled over onto its belly. It was so full it balanced on the great bulge of its its meal. "That seal's all lumpy."
"Leave the poor thing alone, dear," said her mother. She shot a look under the pier but already the struggle beneath the seal's fur was over. All she saw was a very fat seal, and to an untrained eye all seals are very fat.
"It's sleeping," she said, and led her reluctant daughter away by the hand.
Behind them the seal settled down, for the second time and undisturbed now, to digest its meal. It had never eaten humans before, but to a stomach as carnivorous as a seal's one piece of meat is much like another. There were four human feet in its throat and breathing was a bit difficult, but soon enough the two humans would digest enough to make room for the feet in its stomach.
Its droppings would be white with powdered bone as it passed what was once two entire humans, and smaller items of clothing would make their way through its guts with the rest, to be carried away by the tide. The three remaining shoes in its stomach, too bulky to pass through its digestive tract, would eventually be coughed back up. Shoes washed up on the beach all the time, though. No one would think that odd.
Unless things went very wrong for the seal, no one would ever know what happened to Bobby and his mother. Their car would be towed away, investigations would be made, but it's difficult to prove a murder without a body. By the time anyone thought to look for Bobby and his mother, there simply would be no bodies left to find.
If anything did go wrong for the seal, it would be because someone found an unusually large seal dropping and noticed something odd sticking out of it. Clothing, perhaps. Finding two sets of clothing from different people in a pile of seal poop might pique someone's interest.
They had gone down the seal's throat separately, after all, but they would reappear together. The mother and child reunion was only a bowel movement away.
