World Of Endless Dreams
The newest VR game invites you to a close beta. The real and virtual world start to blend as Sarah tries to figure out which one she fits into. She will have to find out as one world is in danger.
A sword pressed up against her neck. Before her was a man in the darkest armor she had ever seen and a helmet that kept his face hidden. How could she have gotten into this mess? The mission was a simple sneak in, grab a weapon or whatever, and get the hell out of there. But now she had her back to the wall with this prick's sword ready to lighten the load off her shoulders.
“I don’t know who hired you, but they wasted their coin.” His voice was cold and clear. Part of her wanted to fight back and prove that she wasn't a waste, but somewhere inside of her could feel death would come soon. She wouldn’t be an S-class adventurer if she let a little death keep her from finishing a job. The skill ‘Quick Draw’ activated and her left hand grabbed the knife on her side and started to stab at his side. To her dismay, before the blade of her knife found its mark, the edge of his sword pushed forward, the world fell silent and whirled as her head landed off to the side.
The world started to fade to black and the words ‘You have died’ faded in. With a loud groan David slid off the full-dive headset. Once the headset was off she slammed her fist into bed cursing the NPC who gave her the quest in the first place. The quest was a little too vague for her liking, but the Reputation increase and the large sum of gold would have gotten her the last little bit she needed for the new armor set.
“Yo David, are you awake my dude? It’s almost noon and I am planning on heading over to McDonald’s for a bite.” David just closed her eyes and sighed as she rolled out of bed. Her room was on the small side, but it had been hers since she was young. The house was her childhood home and with the help of her friend Bean she was able to live there again.
“I will be out in a bit,” She called out as she looked through what she hoped was a pile of clean clothes. Maybe spending most of her time in a game and not cleaning her room and folding clothes wasn’t the best of the ideas she mused. She was in luck and found a baggy tee shirt and cargo pants. When she opened the door she found Bean leaning on the wall outside.
“Dude, were you up playing that game again? You know you should get some real sleep.” Bean started to make his way downstairs.
“Yeah I know I should, but I needed to work through something. Oh… I will be diving again tonight. I got tapped to play a close beta of this new VRMMO and they’re going to be paying the testers too.” David skipped a few steps to keep up with Bean. Diving had two modes, one was Full Dive or FD for short and the other was Dream Dive or DD for short. David loved diving in DD mode for most of her late night gaming. It's like playing a game in a dream, but last night was an FD mode kind of night.
“What’s got you down so bad that an all-nighter was needed?” Bean said as he turned around and locked the house before they started their walk.
“Some asshole thought it would be funny to replace my clothes out of my locker with some clothes from the women's section.” The thought still made David mad and upset. Bean placed a hand on her shoulder and both of them started down the stairs to the sidewalk.
“Damn, that fucking sucks. If you want, I know a guy who knows a guy that could put some drugs in his locker.”
David had to laugh at that. Bean was a guy with connections with connections. If you needed something or needed something done. Bean either knew a guy or knew a guy who knew a guy.
“Nah, I just wish he had grabbed something in my size. It just feels like my body hasn’t changed enough with the meds and those clothes just reminded me how my body fucking sucks.”
David sighed and looked both ways before they rushed across the street. Price Hill Cincinnati wasn’t the best place in the world, but it was home and places to eat where never too far.
The McDonald’s they were headed to was once a Hardee's when she was younger. Part of her wished she could go back to it with her dad one last time for some breakfast. But now she was headed there to grab a burger with her best friend. As they walked, she had started to work through what she needed to get done to be ready to dive. David jumped a few feet when Bean tapped her on the shoulder.
“I have to ask cause it’s starting to feel a little weird. Like is there a name you wanted to be called? Calling you David all the time is weird as fuck when your tits are bigger than most of the girls I dated.” Bean rubbed the back of his head and looked away as he talked. She looked down and blinked a few times. When had they gotten that big? It felt like it was just a few weeks ago that she could give a plank of wood envy from how flat her chest was.
She blinked a few times as she gave it some thought. What name should she go by? The only other name she tried was Sarah and that was only in VR. She never thought about using it in the real world. Sarah was a fearsome hero in some games or an all-powerful mage in others. Could she be like that in the real world?
“Sarah…”
“Hell yeah! That name so matches your vibe. Sarah, thank you for sharing with me. Now let’s grab some burgers cause knowing you, you will want to get ready for the game thing.” With that Sarah was free from being David around Bean. She didn’t know how she got so lucky to land a housemate like him. He never cared that she was different from what others called normal.
The McDonald’s wasn’t too busy for a Saturday and Sarah was glad for that. She was never one for busy places even back before she transitioned. They went to the ordering kiosk and Bean flicked through the menu and hummed as he thought about what he wanted to order.
“Can you get me just two cheeseburgers and a large sweet tea?” Sarah clapped her hands together and gave Bean a pleading look.
“Oh no. Not that look again. You know I find it super freaking hard to say no when you start pleading like that.” Bean looked away in a mock show of will, but it wasn’t long before he hung his head and sighed. “Fine, two cheeseburgers and a large sweet tea for the want-to-be anime girl.”
“Thank you so much, I’ll go grab a table.” She rushed off before he could say anything else. As she found a table she kept looking around the lobby. Being in public never felt safe even when she was out with Bean. After a few scans of the lobby she relaxed in the chair.
“The cooks in the back are on fire. Food flew hard and fast out of the kitchen. Also I think one of the cooks may have actually been on fire.” Bean laughed as he slid the tray across the table. There was something about getting a fresh cheeseburger at the restaurant that was just pure bliss.
A hand slammed on to the table as Sarah was in the middle of a bite. She turned and the world froze. Of all the people to find her here, it had to be him. The person at the end of the table was Brad. He was the person that made her work life hell and now he was here. She couldn’t face him.
“Well, isn’t the freak who thinks he is a girl.” The words came out with a venom.
“What the fuck are you?” Bean pushed Brad’s hand off the table.
“I am just a work friend who wanted to say hi. Is that a problem?
“Kinda of. She is my friend and I don’t like it when people give her shit.” Bean stood up and glared down at him. Sarah never saw him use his full height like this. Bean always kind of slouch, but now he towered over Brad. Sarah slid to the other side of the table. Brad took a few quick steps back.
“You call that freak a friend. You must be messed up in your head too.” Brad took a step forward. Bean smiled as something came to mind.
“I know you. My bud’s dealer sells you some pills like every two weeks or so. Wouldn’t it be a shame if your work found out about this?” Bean leaned down as Brad’s eyes grew wide. “Leave.”
Brad slammed his hands on the table, turned around and rushed out of the restaurant. She blinked a few times as Bean sat back down in his seat and started to much on his burger again. Her mind froze as she tried to process what just happened.
“Why?” Was just above a whisper.
“Why what?” He looked down at his burger.
“Why did you stand up for me like that?” Tears threaten to fall down her face.
“Why not? You’re my best friend. I wasn’t going to let that dickweed talk to you like that.” He made it sound like it was not a big deal. She looked up from her burger and saw him smile at her and that just broke what little was keeping the tears back. At this moment in time she felt like the luckiest person in the world to have a friend like Bean.
The rest of their time there went by without much else being said. On the way back home Sarah stood a little taller and gave a shoulder pump before she rushed ahead a bit.
“Thank you Bean.”
When they got home Bean said something about spending time in his dude cave in the basement. She knew that he really just wanted to smoke some weed and maybe play a game on some old game console that he found at the pawn shop a buddy of his ran. She didn’t care. All she wanted to do was change the sheets on her bed, fluff her pillow, and maybe grab a plushie to keep her body company while she dived. She ran her hand along the walls as she made her way to her room. She remembered the last time she walked this hall as a kid and how it felt so emptied was as her parents took the last box out to the moving truck.
The memories of the past stopped her for a moment in front of the master bedroom, her parents' old room. The nights she would sleep on a fold-up bed during the summers to stay cool and the view of the old church that was lit up at night. This was why she dived, to jump into a new world and to be free to be herself. The term diving came around not long after VR came around. The first divers coined it because it was like diving into a pool, but to a different world. She shook her head and rushed down the hall to her room.
A lot of what she did to prepare for the beta wasn’t needed, but she wanted to make sure her body was comfortable while her mind was in the game world. No one really understood how the full dive system worked besides blocking the signals from the brain to your body. There was a rumor that the first full dive allowed the person to walk around the limited space of the room, but one of the floor panels had popped loose and tripped the person. The tripped and bulky dive helmet snapped the person’s neck. Or that is what she heard on the online chat boards.
It didn’t take her long to get her bed in order. Her bed was the only thing in her room that she kept clean. The last thing she grabbed before laying in bed was a plushie of a banana shaped crocodile. With that out of the way she gently pulled the dive helmet over her head and the menu popped open. The game was right there on the ready to launch side of her vision. It had been ready for a week since she had gotten the email for the closed beta. With it selected, there was only one thing left to do.
“Full Dive mode activate!” She called out before she fell from the world and the helmet.
Around her was the black void most called GameLoad. It was kind of a holding space the system placed you in while the game loaded up. A lot of people really hated this. It felt like you were floating without a body. No up or down, just black void. The amount of time you felt like you spent there depended on the game.
She blinked and found herself in a room covered in red drapes and a single mirror. The room is no bigger than a small bathroom. The drapes had a look of red silk and she really really wanted to touch them. As she tried to reach for them, nothing happened. She was still in the same state as if she was still in GameLoad.
“Don’t worry Sarah. You will have a body as soon as you choose a few things first.” Sarah jumped back when she found a person next to her, or she would have if she had a body to do it in. A beautiful woman in a white gown with a few gold necklaces and lush brown hair that hung just above the nape of her back.
“That makes sense, but wait a second, why did you call me that name for? I haven’t set my name yet.”
“The dive helmet. You have ‘Sarah’ set as the default name and so the game informed me of this for my greeting.”
“I don’t understand what you mean. You are talking like you are a real life person.”
“That would be because I am a real life person. The admin team wanted to greet all the beta testers. So with that out of the way, let me welcome you to ‘World of Endless Dreams’.The world itself is called The Obsidian Vale.” The goddess threw her arms out and confetti fell from the above.
“Was the confetti really needed?”
“Yes.”
“If you say so. So how do I get started?”
“Well, you have been selected to test a new function of the dive system. The new function will do a deep scan of your brain and create your character based on your scan. Or you can just do the normal character creation stuff.” Sarah blinked a few times. What were the chances that she would be selected for something so groundbreaking? There was no way in hell she would say no to this chance.
“Yeah, why would I say no to that? I feel like I would spend my whole night just stressing out over creating my character. So is there anything I need to know about the world before I jump in?
“Don’t worry about the world info. You can find that in the menu once you wake up. So all that is left is for you to accept the prompt when it pops up by thinking yes or no.” As soon as the goddess finished speaking a pop-up appeared before her. ‘Full scan character generation? Yes. No’
“Yes…” Before she could ask the goddess another thing, the world faded black.
The world rushed back to her and she found herself on the floor as she fell out of a bed. The pain from the fall caused her to jolt up and she started to rub the back of her head. Her hand found a pair of long animal ears and long silky hair.
“What the?!?” She looked around the plain looking room and found a full size mirror. She tried to get to her feet and stumbled a few times and found that her feet were a pair of large paws. This only caused her to panic more and rushed to the mirror.
What she found in the mirror was an anthropomorphic fox with long pink hair that made it half way down their back. The outfit wasn’t much, just simple medieval shorts and a shirt. She tried a few poses and blinked a few times. She never thought she would have curves like this.
“Well damn, I am a basic furry fox. I am never going to live this down with my friends.” Her tail flicked a few times as she gave herself a better look over and blinked. From what she could tell she was about five foot ten, with a slender build, creamy orange fur over most of her body with just a patch of white that ran from the chin of her muzzle down to her lower belly, and both the tip of her ears and tail had a bit of pink in them.
So this is her now. A tall slender fox girl with long black hair and now the question was what class she was playing as. Now how does she open the menu to see her stats? As soon as she thought about it, a sharp pain flashed through her head and she stumbled back a few steps before she fell onto the bed. A two finger tap to the temple will open it and with that she taps her two fingers to her temple.
A small window popped in front of her, it looked like a glass tinted light blue. She cupped her chin as she read over the information:
Name: Sarah
Race: Foxkin
Class: Sorcerer
MP: 200 HP: 150
Strength: 10 Dexterity: 15 Vitality: 13 Intelligence: 18 Wisdom: 14 Charisma: 16
Spell List: Foxfire, Bolt, Light, Hidden Message, Illusion Clone
Menu: Items, Quest, Messages, System
She eyed over the screen a few more times before she double tapped her temple again. The screen vanished and held out her hands in front of her. These are her hands, covered in black fur and with paw pads on palm and fingertips. She opened and closed both of them and closed her eyes.
“Why does it feel so real? Why does it feel like the hand I should have had my whole life?” Her mind struggled to understand the feelings she had. VR always gave users a feeling of realism, but there was a disconnect that would keep players grounded while playing.
“System alert! User mental stability is outside of safe levels. Emergency logout in progress. Please standby.” The system called out before the world around her was filled with a bright light.
Sarah jolted up from her bed and looked around her room in a panic as the feeling from the game still lingered in her. She could still feel the fur, the ears, even the weight of her tail from the game. It was so real. She felt more real there than she did now.
“How? What the fuck is going on!?” She tossed the dive helmet to the ground and looked down at her arms to find no soft fur, but she could still feel the fur. Her breath started to pick up and she glanced around the room as it started to spin. The door to her room slammed open as she passed out as Bean shouted her name.
