Mike is a male human in his mid to late twenties. He combed through his long, purple-streaked black hair. He checked his brown eyes for any dryness before dropping eyedrops in them. He adjusted his black t-shirt and dark blue ripped jeans, then slipped on a pair of black socks, before trotting over to his large, black and white computer. Mike sat down on his red cushioned desk chair and, after placing his Bluetooth speaker in his right ear, he opened up an online video chat program.
“Hello Mister Gregory. This is Mike from the McDunderland Office Supplies. I am returning your call about your order. Did you not receive your package?” Mike said in a professional, albeit low, monotonic, deadpan voice.
“Yes sir. I ordered office supplies last week. I’ve checked the tracking, and it says it arrived. When I went to pick it up, it wasn’t there.”
“I am sorry, Mr. Gregory. I will take care of it.”
“Thank you. My business needs it pronto.”
After spending hours throughout the day dealing with customer issues and mundane tasks. Every so often, he’d glance at the package sitting on his black glass desk. He’s been meaning to open it for a long time. It came from a friend of his: Tommy Nordenstein. He had pondered what can be inside, but has slouched in doing so. It would be a good idea to check it, seeing as doing mundane office work had him bored silly.
Time passed, and the workday ended. Mike stretched his legs, grunted, and got up to grab food. He rose and accidentally knocked the package over. He looked down and stared at it blankly.
“... Oops.” He picked up the package and took it with him to his tiny apartment kitchen.
“I need to open this…but I’m starving. It will have to wait until I’ve eaten.”
After opening the white refrigerator and placing ingredients to make a seafood salad on the brown countertops, he got his tongs and utensils to prepare it. Greens here, fish there, a splash of ranch, and done. Mike poured a glass of red wine into a wine glass before carrying it to an old wooden oak brown table in a small dining room. He flipped the aged fake chandelier lighting over him and sat down to eat. He popped open a video on YouTube covering information about various Digimon.
That brought a soft smile to his usual vacant, expressionless face. He ate away at his salad, savoring and enjoying it, taking a sip of wine every so often. Once finished with his meal, he took both and placed them in the white dishwater under the silver metallic sink next to it. Mike, engrossed in his Digimon video, saw the package out of the corner of his eye as he walked past the dining table.
“Okay…time to open it.”
Mike sat down at the dining room table and pried it open with a knife he retrieved from the kitchen. Inside was a blue and white toy Digivice iC. It was specifically the Digivice from the anime: Digimon Data Squad/Savers. He looked over the bright and colorful packaging. It described Gaomon as being the partner Digimon inside the device. Gaomon is to be cared for and played with.
Mike gave a soft grunt of satisfaction and smiled ever so slightly. A bit of life lighting up in his otherwise dull eyes. He retrieved the scissors from the kitchen. He opened it from its packaging carefully before removing it. Mike felt over the materials, taking note that it didn’t feel like plastic. It has weight and a fine, metallic feel. There was a lot of love and quality put into creating this toy Digivice.
He glanced at the back, flipped it on. It buzzed to life, playing a playful 8-bit jingle. A flashy Digimon logo appeared on the screen before it faded to pixels, leading to text prompts appearing in the same font as the Digimon logo.
“Hello! What is your name?”
Mike typed his name in the prompts.
“Nice to meet you, Mike! Welcome to the wild world of Digimon: Digital Monsters! I am sure you are excited to meet your new partner: Gaomon!”
A cute sprite animation of Gaomon waving to him before doing a backflip and fist pump appeared before it transitioned back to text.
“Are you ready? This is a big commitment. Will you love and care for Gaomon with all your heart and soul?”
Mike wrote yes in the prompts.
“Are you willing to make it a life commitment? Are you willing to give your all for Gaomon?”
“Huh…I wasn’t expecting a toy to be this deep, but okay.”
He prompted yes again.
“Thank you! You are such a good tamer! You’re DigiDestined for greatness!”
The text disappeared before an image of Gaomon plastered on the screen with a mischievous, toothy grin appeared. It flashed brightly like a camera for a second, momentarily blinding him. Mike groaned and rubbed his eyes before his vision cleared. He checked the Digivice only to find Gaomon missing. He went through the menu prompts. Care, play, train, options, extras. No sign of anything.
“What the? Where did he go?”
Mike felt baffled. He kept trying the options on repeat, but it was to no avail. Mike checked the manual inside the packaging, finding a tiny reset button next to the on and off switch. He retrieved a pen from the kitchen, pressing and holding the button for ten seconds, until the device reset. Once on, it returned to the menus. Gaomon is still missing. Mike facepalmed, shook his head, and left the Digivice behind.
He plopped onto his black-and-white striped quilt on his bed and laid back on pillows of the same color and pattern. He whipped out his smartphone and called his friend Tommy.
“Hey Tommy.”
“Hai Mike!” Tommy said in his high-pitched, bubbly, English-accented voice. “How was your day? Did you open the package?”
“Dull…boring…frustrating. Yes I did.”
“Aw…bugger. I hope my gift lifted your spirits. I know how much you love Digimon.”
Mike blushed and looked away shyly. “Yeah, sure…whatever. Look…I appreciate the gift, but it doesn’t work.”
“What do you mean?”
Mike explained the situation to him.
“What the blazes? That’s not right. Tell you what…when I return from my business trip, I will check it.”
“Thanks. When will you return?”
“In just a couple more days. Shouldn’t be much longer. Hang in there.”
“Sure. Bye.”
“Bye dude.”
Mike hung up and sighed. “Just another day in my life. Nothing ever goes my way.”
He glanced at his digital alarm clock on a wooden counter next to his bed. It was time for bed. He switched his phone on and watched videos about Digimon until he dozed off. While asleep, he had strange dreams about being in a boxing arena. He was naked, blue, furry, and adorned with nothing but red boxing gloves, white armbands, and a red headband. Mike fought a shadowy opponent, declaring himself the victor by the end. He felt alive and happy. Like life was a thrill ride. It was one of the best dreams he’s ever had.
To his disappointment, he woke up to the sound of his phone alarm going off. It was time to prepare for work. He rubbed his eyes, stretched his limbs, and went through the same dressing routine. When he stood before the bedroom mirror, flipped the light on, only for a headache to stir. He gripped his head until the feeling faded. He observed himself, noting something off with his eyes and arms. His eyes were cute, cartoony, expressive, and a vibrant shade of gold. Not only that, but there was silky soft blue fur covering his arms and legs. He checked his teeth and noticed they were sharper, more pointed, much like fangs. Even his tongue felt longer than usual.
“Uh... what?!” he uttered. A flash of confusion struck him.
His thoughts drifted.
“Yes…yes, master.”
Mike grabbed his head before the thoughts continued.
“Sir…yes sir!”
A cute smile crept over Mike’s face, feeling oddly relaxed, before shaking his head.
“What the hell? Did someone spike my wine? Am I hallucinating? No…this feels way too real. It’s freaky…perfect for a freak like me.”
He went to his closet and swapped his short-sleeved shirt for a long one. Mike nabbed some colored contacts from the top of his closet and placed the brown-colored ones inside. He stood in front of the mirror and checked himself. “Okay…I look mostly normal now. I can’t let anyone see me like this. If they did, they’d scream! I get that reaction enough as is. If I were seen, they might haul me to a hidden lab. I better not take any chances. Shame, cause I’d show off if I could. It’s freaky and fun in all the right ways!” He pried his lips back and checked his teeth. “The only problem is my teeth. I can do audio calls today. It’s no big deal. When work ends, I’ll call Tommy. He is the only friend I know that knows more about Digimon than I do. I know he’s a furry who’s into transformation stuff. He has to know something.”
Mike went to make breakfast. He hankered for tea and biscuits, something he did not have.
“Darn…I wanted to make my special blend…”
Mike grabbed his head and shook it. “I don’t drink tea, nor do I make special blends. It’s like there’s another person inside me or something. How freaky!” He sighed and made a bowl of cereal.
He scarfed down his food and got to work. “I’ll work to kill time. Not like I have a choice. I can speak with Tommy later when he’s available.”
Everything seemed normal for a time. It wasn’t until about halfway through his workday that things got weird.
“The email sent your delivery confirmation code to you. Do you have any more questions?”
“No, sir, that’ll be all.” A young man in his thirties said.
“Wonderful. You have a great rest of your…”
“Uh…hello? Is something wrong?”
“Master? Is that you, Master?”
“Excuse me? What the actual fuck?”
“Grrr…you’re not my master!” Mike said in a deep, handsome, manly voice, unlike his own. He willed himself back in control, leading to his voice returning to normal. “I’m sorry. I am having technical difficulties.”
“Who was that?”
“Uh…there was interference with another call. I think we’re dealing with hackers. Just a practical joke, I’d assume. I’ll contact management to take care of it. I am sorry for that.”
“Those pranksters are a bunch of freaks! Yeah, get on that, dude. And hey, it’s no sweat. You’re just doing your job. People are assholes sometimes.”
“Heh…damn right. People these days, am I right?” He said with a nervous chuckle, wiping sweat from his brow.
“Hey man! Have a great day.”
“You too. Have a good one.”
He hung up and slammed his head into the desk. “Ugh! What a drag. That better not happen again.” He said, pointing to his head. “Whoever or whatever you are…shut up. Least until after work…okay? You’re going to get me fired! I know we’re both freaks, but be freaky some other time.”
Another call came in. He spent the rest of the evening thinking he’d have another incident. Thankfully, whoever is inside him seemed to listen and caused him no more issues, for now. When he went to get up out of his chair, he noticed his feet weren’t touching the floor. If anything, he shrank several inches. Fur covered his legs, where there had been none before.
“Huh? What now?” He scurried out of his seat, clothes sagging off his body. He checked in the mirror and saw his nose turn black and large. His face pushed out partially into a muzzle, and his contacts fell out without him realizing. Mike’s nails turned to black claws, and the palms of his hands pushed out into pads. His feet likely changed in the same way. A soft whimper escaped his lips before he leaned in close and observed himself.
“Am I becoming…a Digimon? I gotta call Tommy!” Mike pulled out his phone and called him.
“Hey Tommy.” Mike said.
“Good day, Mike! How are you?”
“Uh, okay…I guess.”
“You guess? You sound odd. What’s wrong?”
Mike paused. “Here goes nothing, I guess…”
“Something fucking freaky is happening.”
“Freaky?”
“Um, like…you know…furry transformation? Well, uh…”
“Yes indeed. I love furry transformations. It’s something I’m fascinated with. You’ve got my attention. Go on…what transformation weirdness do you have in store for me?”
“Uh…” He muttered before his mind drifted as a presence took over. “Master? Is that you, Master? You sound like my master!” “Mike” said in his changed voice, sounding rather excited to hear his “Master’s” voice.
“Ohohoho! Who is this lovely fellow? You sound just like Gaomon!” Tommy said with an excited squeal.
“Where are you? I am all alone, waiting for you in an unfamiliar place.” “Mike” said. Mike had to force himself back before clearing his throat. “Tommy…fucking really?”
“Oh, er…my apologies. Your Gaomon impression had me all excited, and I couldn’t help myself.”
“It wasn’t an impression. I can’t voice act worth a shit.”
“What’s going on here?”
“Look…instead of explaining, as soon as you return from your trip, come here immediately.”
“Okay then...are you sure there isn’t anyone else that can assist you? I’m terribly busy and…”
“You know all my friends. Do you seriously think anyone else can address something of your expertise. You know…what I mentioned earlier?”
“No…no they do not. If that is the case, I’ll take the earliest flight tomorrow evening and arrive by the morning after.” He paused. “Hey…I know you’ve piqued my curiosity, but I am worried about you. Are you okay? Do you think you’ll make it until I arrive? I can call your neighbors and…”
“No, you don’t have to. I’ll survive. Focus on yourself and on getting here soon. It’s something only you can address.”
“Alright. I’ll be there soon. Hang in there until then.”
“Sure…bye.”
“Goodbye.”
They hung up the phone. “Tommy has to see this. He can explain it better than I could.” Mike thought before his mind drifted.
“I desire a special herbal blend of tea and biscuits. There must be a store nearby. If only Thomas were here…” Mike shook his head. “No…we’re having soup, salads, and wine. That’s final!” He shouted, before glancing at his bedroom window. “The neighbors must think I’m crazy. Oh wait…they already do!”
Mike went about his usual routines, before settling down for the night.
