Life has many doors, so they say, but others say that life has many different variations. In the No Zone, variations are fascinating. Zokun and Ztone are the agents monitoring more peaceful worlds for possible Zone violations.

Most of the time, like this time, it doesn’t happen, but for Ztone, this variation is intriguing.

Exhibit A: Surge the Tenrec. She’s a dead villain, a martyred hero, or a nobody in many alternate futures. In this timeline, because of a strange intervention, she has become something no other Surges Ztone has seen before—she has become happy.

The Tenrec finds herself in the arms of her Kangaroo adoptive older sister. Bre snuggles against the Tenrec, the taller Mobian’s hold making the troublemaker squirm about in her hands. “C-come on, put me down. Yer embarrassin’ me!” Surge complains.

Standing next to Bre’s girlfriend, Lexus the Doberman, and Surge’s partner in “crime,” Kitsunami. Lexus holds Kit’s shoulder, chuckling slightly at the display. Kit squirms a little, biting his lip, but the curl of the smile on the edge of Surge’s face calms him and his anxieties.

“Ya brk,” says the kangaroo, messing with Surge’s hair in an almost-noogie. Do you really want to miss out on the Hot Honey concert? Last chance.”

“Ugh, I already said that I got stuff I wanna do,” Surge says, giving Bre a playful shove.

Lexus snickers slightly. “Hey, Bre, it’s cool. We’ll just smother her in attention after we get back. Besides,” She says, squeezing Kit’s shoulder, “Shortstack over here needs to have more confidence on his own still, don’t you think?”

“Yeah, Drippy,” Surge says, hands on her hips, tapping her foot, “You need to get used to me not being around you all the time. It’s all the doctor’s programming making you way too clingy, buh-buh-buh, I know, I know, you care for me, and I appreciate it. Really, I do, but it hurts me to see you can’t be your own man.”

Kit fidgets, tapping his fingers together. “I know… I know I’m sorry, Surge.”

“Don’t sweat it, besides,” she says, draping her arm over his shoulder and whispering, “If I’m alone today, I’ll have a chance to be really happy, okay? This thing I wanna work on. It’s important to me.”

“Well, whatever it is, I can help you. I can-ooph!”

With a finger pressed against his muzzle, Surge stops Kit from stumbling over himself in offers of help. “Listen. If I need ya, you’ll know. Just go. Have fun. Enjoy your time with the girls. They like ya, you nerd.”

“You’re the nerd,” says Bre, cuddling up to Lexus.

“Both of you,” Lexus coos.

“But we definitely want to see what this project of yours is,” Bre says, her mischievous smirk fading.

Surge waves her off. “Don’t ya worry about it. It’s safe. I ain’t done anything rash in years!”

“Is that true?” Asks Agent Ztone.

Zokun yawns, going through the data. “Yeah, in this universe, Starline made three effective anti-heroes. Bre was one of them, which seems to have added stability to her and Kitsumani’s lives!

Ztone strokes his chin, “How is her criminal activity? Anything on the multiversal radar?”

“Nope!”

“Interesting…”

“Okay, okay, but since you’re an adult now, we can trust ya,” says Bre, giving her another one of her patented hugs.

Surge squeals and squirms under her, eventually breaking free. “Come oooon, Bre!”

Bre and Lexus chuckle, ushering Kit and leaving Surge alone on the porch. She waves to them with one hand and holds the other hand in her pocket.

“Don’t you dare have too much fun without me!” she calls out in her own tease as the group gets into the car and drives off. She stands before the door, sighing and smiling, putting her other hand in her pocket.

“Well, that’s good enough for me to check this Surge off our list,” says Zokun, changing the channel, watching a Surge living in a desert wasteland inhabited by zombots and other monstrosities.

“Maybe so,” says Ztone, “but she does show that Surge could have a happy life… if given a chance.”

Surge, of course, is utterly unaware of the ones watching her. This is true for the No Zone surveyors and the pair of green eyes watching from the bush behind her.

She rolls on her feet, watching the street in front of her. She even pulls out her phone, swiping through her messages, and a frown forms.

There’s nothing.

Is he not coming?

Just as she thought all hope was lost, the blue creature behind her leaps out and wraps his arms around Surge. Kisses were placed on her neck, making her laugh, squeal, and shout. She spins around, giving playful punches to the only true blue hero who could have ever been fast enough to sneak up on her like that.

“Sonic the Hedgehog!” she shouts in such a way it could almost be a logo.

“In the flesh,” he says, giving her nose a playful boop, “and so are you,”

She giggles, hands in her pockets, hopping on her toes. “Y-yeah, I am. You, uh, you wanna go in?”

“You know it, beautiful,” he says,

The two of them zip past the door into her room, sending static through the air. Quite a strange combination. If our viewers had watched longer, they might have seen something spectacular.

Surge’s obsession with Sonic started as far back as she can remember. It began as a terrible hate, morphed into jealousy, and came that strange day.
