Chapter 3-Cheese It, The Cops!
Vanya barely had time to figure out what was happening before she was hoisted over the beast's shoulder and was being pulled up the building. It was like a bad King Kong movie, except a lot more frightening. With he positioning she was staring straight down at the clouds below and all that could fill her mind was how horrible it would be to fall to one's death.
Especially with the size of the building! It was one of the largest in the world, boasting a total of 147 stories. Luckily she had rode the elevator up with her friend and attentively paid attention to the numbers. The lab had been on the 145th floor, so the climb wouldn't be that long. Assuming he didn't slip at least.
She let out a squeak as one large paw covered her ass, a deep blush rising to her gray cheeks, but she made no attempt to stop him. She was too afraid of falling to try and fight back against his rude groping.
The cold wind whipped against her wet clothes and fur, causing her to tremble madly atop his hard shoulder. Her paws instinctively clenched against back, holding onto his fur for dear life. He didn't seem to mind. In fact she felt his thumb brushing again and again across the small of her back. Was he attempting to comfort her?
She didn't know, nor did she ask. She was too paralyzed to even think about escape or speaking for that matter. She squinted her eyes shut, whimpers held at bay in her throat due to the gentle rubbing the lion gave. She waited for the ride of terror to end.
It seemed like an eternity, but finally her wish came true. He suddenly stopped moving and she heard the scrape of his claws hit the tarred roof. With a small shrug he dropped her rump onto the ledge of the roof. His paw was there to catch her as she almost fell over onto the top of the building. His fingers carefully grasped her ankles and swiveled her about, allowing her paws to rest on the dried tar.
Vanya glanced about frantically, looking for the roof exit, but the building obviously lacked one. She had heard the very top floors were still under construction. They must have not added the fire exit even. In her lawyer-like manner she thought of how many lawsuits she could give these people.
But the deep thud of the male's feet behind her quickly drew her out of her thoughts. Her eyes widened as he moved toward her, her reflexes quickly kicking in. She ran for the first thing she saw; a whole stack of concrete tubes often seen on construction sites.
Her little feet carried her as quickly as they could. She could hear him storming after her, but luckily she had a bit of a head start and was always a little faster than the average female.
Unfortunately her luck wasn't running good today. As she entered the tube she easily noticed that it was well large enough for him. In moments his large body had sent a shadow across her crawling form.
Vanya whimpered her defeat, knowing well enough that he would catch up to her. He quickly did so, grabbing one of her ankles and holding her still as he moved to sit inside the tube. Then his other paw came forward and grasped at her midsection, raising her completely from the tube and placing her in front of him.
He took up the entire bottom of the tube, which left her with feet propped on his shins, body slightly hunched against the curved side of the concrete. He had the decency to shift enough to where they were both hunched evenly within its confines.
He seemed to see her thoughts of trying to crawl again. His paws moved to either side of the tube, blocking her in place and coincidentally bringing his face close to hers. His deep voice rumbled, vibrating the across the structure and through her chest, "Please don't be scared. I truly don't want to hurt you, I just want a few questions answered."
"I-" she stopped noticing her voice was still too high. She took a moment to slowly breath before starting again, "I don't know anything."
"How can I believe that?" he asked, his anger obviously rising.
"I really don't! My friend brought me here to see...Well, to see you. They had some sort of project of resurrecting you from your bones, rebuilding your body." She averted her eyes, biting her lip for a moment, "You've been dead for quite some time. Truly, that's all I've heard."
The large beast held still, staring at her with a blank expression that she couldn't read. Then, very slowly, he fell back. His arms went limp at his sides, eyes staring into her own and yet not. He seemed to stare through her, entering another world of complete remorse.
"What's your name?" Vanya suddenly blurted, doing anything to cover the cold, sad silence that had grown between them.
"Montor," he spoke, his voice gentler than she had yet heard.
"I'm Vanya." He only nodded in response.
The silence drew on before, after what seemed an eternity, he spoke again, "What year is it?"
"2063."
"I have been dead for some time then." He brushed her elbow with one of his paws, giving her a tiny nudge, "You can go now. I'm sorry to have dragged you into this."
Vanya was more than shocked by his sudden change in opinion. He had seemed quite intent on keeping her close, something she didn't understand, and yet still did. She was the first thing he had seen after awakening, the one real grasp on this new world he had entered. But still, what would life be like being tied to someone who was most likely going to be a fugitive for the rest of his days? Running constantly, hiding in alleyways and living in woods. It wasn't a comforting thought to her.
She slowly shifted from her position, creeping across the top of the tunnel before landing, crouched again, next to him. She looked to him for a moment, attempting to read his expression again, but it was useless. She couldn't see a thing.
Her sensitive ears once again perked as she heard the noise of some flying machine, what she guessed to be a helicopter. She watched the end of the tunnel intently, body tensed as the sound grew louder and louder.
"I can't leave. They're looking for you," she spoke in a strained tone. She felt him shift as well, coming to a crouching position just behind her.
The beating of the fans reverberated against the concrete as a bright, circular light swooped across the roof. She watched it disappear from view, searching over one half before slowly slipping across the other. Her breath caught in her throat as it zoomed over their hideout, but due to how deep in they were, there was no chance of the beam discovering them.
It made one more sweep of the territory before lifting higher. The sound soon faded into the distance.
Montor slumped against the concrete, his body losing any sign of tenseness or life. His silence enveloped both of them. She could feel his sadness as if it were tangible. After what seemed an eternity he spoke again, They're gone now. you may leave."
But the chinchilla paid no heed. She crawled a little further down to keep watch at the end of their hideout, legs pressing close to her chest with arms slipping about them. She could feel his eyes on her, roaming over every inch of her fur. The rumbling voice had a note of curiosity, "Aren't you going to leave?"
"There's no way for me to get down. And besides that, if they find me they'll certainly force me to tell them where you are. I don't have that kind of chivalry where I can lose my life over keeping a secret," her voice echoed inside the area, causing it to sound louder and more forceful. In all truth she was scared out of her wits. What would this mean now? How would she live with this new burden on her mind? Sure, she could leave and wave her arms on top of the roof. Someone would spot her eventually and she could be rescued.
The real question that was plaguing her was did she really want to be rescued? Montor was strong, much stronger than she would ever be. All her life she had waited for something to happen to her; maybe this was it. living as a lawyer was a boring life. The only assignments she was ever given were minor injuries people received in work. Her company had a strict policy of not suing others, so it never went to court. She simply filled out the necessary paperwork for a few weeks and after a while the injured furre would receive their money, little as it was.
It was a boring, drab life that she didn't enjoy in the least. She constantly thought of how she was sickened by the fast life furres lead. They had lost touch with their ancestral routes, but now she was in the company of one of those ancestors. Maybe she could learn to live a new, more productive life with this intriguing creature.
"Why do you care so much about whether they find me?" his voice snapped her out of her daydreaming.
Her eyes met his, unblinking as she spoke the honest truth, "I have no idea." She quickly avoided his probing gaze and looked across the clouds that had gathered in mass.
The sun set upon them without another word passed.
