The Dragonborns Duties

Part 1

Neras grew up in the city of Waterdeep off the northern Swordcoast in Faerún, knowing her mother was a hard worker to supply for herself and the black dragonborn girl. Her father however, she never really knew. Only that he was a black dragon somewhere in the world that had taken her mother quite forcefully, then fled back to his swamplands somewhere on the continent.

Her mother had done her best to raise Neras as best she could, but not knowing how dragons really….worked, she couldn't help much when the black dragonborns breath weapon began to develop, regurgitating and spilling out acid every day, until she learned to control it. She also began to work around the city of Waterdeep with small tasks, helping people move crates and pull carts with her immense strength, performing some tasks that even the large humans couldn't.

She was always thanked, but never rewarded for her work, until she came across a temple within Waterdeep, where she began to study and help them as well, eventually beginning to gain a meager weekly coin of two gold a week, which was enough for her to eat and survive off of, and save up a little as well. Eventually after a couple more years, she was able to save up enough to purchase her own property within the city.

Moving her things into her new home, she smiled as she stood outside her door, swaying her black tail about behind herself as she let out a happy sounding hum, before her ears perked hearing the sounds of someone in chainmail approaching her from behind. Turning abruptly, she quickly bowed at the waist as she spoke softly to the guard captain that was now ahead of her. “G...good evening sir! To what do I owe the pleasure?"

The man in the suit of armor spoke up, smiling to the dragonborn as he motioned for her to right herself. “Greetings Neras! I have come with an...offer for you. I am looking for some new recruits for the city guard…" Hyustus soon raised his head, looking up towards the 7 foot tall dragoness's muzzle, a smile on his face. “You've done a lot for the city, and I know you are quite the kind creature, regardless of what others may think of your scales. This would be a great opportunity to change the...derision and falsities that are always spread about you! Me and the guard know better already, along with the churches, so why not try to….get the people in the city to realise it as well!"

Neras nodded her head gently, though spoke softly to the guard, “Y...yes sir that would be quite the...thing to do! I just...I'm not too good with talking to people, or making decisions! B...but, if you think I would be a good addition to the guard of the city, I shall do my best!" Hyustus chuckled softly, reaching out and up to pat the dragonborns shoulder a bit, “It's not that I think so, Neras, I know so. And why not show the people you are more than just your scale colors! You know as well as I do that the people of the city whisper about your scale color."

She growled at this, but soon quieted as she glanced away a bit. “T...they do yes, but it's not even something I can control. But if you think I can make a change in their minds on how I am, then so be it! I'll work with the guard if you would have me!" Hyustus laughed loudly, a joy, mirth-filled laugh as he nodded. “If? Please, the guard would be blessed to have someone of your stature and attitude on it! You are a kind creature, always looking out for the best of those you're helping or working for. And you do your duties quite fully, and to the best you always can. We've watched you for a few months now at this point. Put a lot of thought into this decision also. And I came personally to welcome you to the guard!"

Neras smiled, nodding her head once more to the nearly 6 foot tall male human, looking down at him for a moment, “Well...if you think I'll be a good addition sir, so be it! I shall gather my things and meet you at the barracks in town?" Hyustus shook his head a bit, laughing lightly a moment, “Not yet Neras, we need to gauge your abilities! Meet me in about an hour down at the training grounds in the city. I'm sure you know where they are, I've seen you down there a few times watching me and my men train!" Hyustus laughed a moment, soon turning about and walking off to prepare, waving a hand behind himself towards Neras, who stood there surprised and giddy at such an opportunity!

She soon dashed off towards her small home, deciding to get a quick bath to clean herself up, and dressing up in her simple leather armors, stretching out a bit as she donned the equipment. Moving off towards her small kitchen, she gathered herself a quick meal of porridge and a small block of cheese, gobbling down her meal quickly, before she stood up, stretching herself out again to limber up her muscles, before shuffling off and out her door, locking up her small apartment of sorts, to then dash off towards the training grounds she was asked to head towards.

Neras soon arrived at the training grounds, which was a simple wooden ring of posts and boards, stepping up to the railing as she watched the two men within the ring spar, swords clanging against each other, and off armor and shields, sparks flying on occasion. “O...oh my...they're actually hitting each other. Like...hitting, hitting!" She perked her ears as she watched the two in the ring intently, her thick tail swaying about slowly as she soon rested her arms upon the wooden boards gently.

After a few minutes the two heard a whistling sound and came to a stop, turning to face the captain that had walked into the ring, “Good work you two, but Jorgen…" Hyustus pointed towards the man on the left. “You need to work on your form a bit more! You leave open spots too often!" He then turned towards the other male present in the ring, “And you, Grendal...You need to work more on your footwork. You stumbled a few times in your movements, and in a real life situation, would lead to you being pushed off balance and stabbed through the neck in a heart-beat!" The two gave a nod of their heads, before looking to the large female dragonborn curiously a moment, before looking to the captain once more. “W...what brought you down here today anyway sir? S...shouldn't you be getting patrols ready?"

Hyustus laughed gently before motioning towards Neras beside himself with a finger and nod of his head to the side. “Getting ready to train a new recruit! Jorgen, Grendal….meet Neras Zorgar!" The two men gaped a moment at the dragoness, before quickly looking back over to their captain, “Sir!" They both clapped a fist over their chest and bowed a moment, before leaping the railing to take a stand on either side of the dragoness and their captain, leaving Neras and Hyustus to step over the railing and into the makeshift arena, looking to one another a moment. “She's huge! I'd...heard of the dragoness that was...helping around town with heavy lifting and things, but...damn!" Grendal laughed and nodded his head a bit, soon focusing upon the arena and the two inside as he spoke to his friend, “She certainly is. And it looks like the captain himself is going to….see what she's made of!"

Neras moved off towards one side of the arena, while Hystus moved to the opposite side, “First thing we're testing Neras, is your physical strength." Hyustus then began closing the distance between himself and the dragonborn, fists raised in a manner to protect his face, Neras lashing her tail about and soon doing much the same, raising her hand-claws up, closed and over her muzzle to protect her face as well.

The two soon met in the middle of the arena, Hyustus driving a solid strike into the dragoness' mid-section, knocking the wind out of her quickly, but she swung with her own blow to the side of the captain's head, knocking it to the side roughly. Hyustus drove another punch into the right side of her ribs, leaving Neras doubled over a bit, though she quickly kicked one of her legs out towards the humans shins, knocking his balance off quickly with her strength, which she took advantage of quickly, shoving her claws forward, driving both fists into his chest to push him back onto the ground, landing with a heavy thud onto his back. She quickly moved to pounce upon him, pinning his arms to his sides, where she was suddenly head-butted in the muzzle by him, knocking her head backwards and making her loosen her grip on his arms, which Hyustus took advantage of and pushed her off himself with his feet, knocking her back onto her rear in the dirt of the arena, letting him slowly stand up and regain his stance. “That was quite good, Neras! Quick adjustment, and took advantage of the situation with your opponent!"

The two continued like this, trading blows back and forth for nearly half an hour, before Hyustus waved a hand as he stood back in his original position, breathing slightly heavy as he panted for air. “T...that's...enough! You've...certainly passed the physical tests!" He wiped a bit of blood from his nose as he soon shuffled over, gathering up a suit of simple leather armor, and a two handed sword, resting them beside himself as he motioned over towards the rack of weapons near-by. “Pick out which one you would like. We can test a few of them out to see which one you like more, understood?"

Neras nodded her head as she soon picked up a large longword, commonly called a bastard sword, or a hand and a half sword due to its size, gripping the handle with both of her claws as she gave it a few practice swings. The guard captain gathered up a large war-hammer, and hefted it up onto his shoulder, before waiting on Neras to prepare herself. Once she was seemingly situated, the two clashed once more, though neither were really capable of landing a solid blow on the other, Neras because her movements were, too heavy and stumbling every once in a swing or two, while Hyusts wasn't exactly trying since this was simple training, just deflecting blows, and giving the occasional shove back against the dragonborn.

She soon came to a stop, huffing gently from the exertion of the weapon as she growled gently. “T...this thing is too heavy. It limits my movements too much." She made her way then, back over to the rack to replace the weapon on it, to then pick up a sword and shield, fixing the shield upon her left arm, while she gripped the handle of the weapon in her right, giving it a few test swings once more before she took a simple stance across from Hyustus, who was now weidling a heavy looking mace and a shield of his own. “You have a good feel for weaponry it seems already. Able to tell that previous weapon made you too slow, that's excellent!"

The two soon clashed again, Neras quickly raising her shield arm up to block, and deflect an oncoming blow from the large mace, while she quickly swung out her sword arm to strike the guard captain in the side with her weapon. Hyustus, seeing this coming, quickly adjusted his grip, letting the handle of his weapon slide down, blocking the sword blade from his side as he chuckled, soon trapping the blade behind the handle of his weapon and attempting to twist his arms, aiming to pull the weapon quickly from her grip, “Not bad so far, but you will certainly need some more training!"

Neras moved though with the twisting, raising her foot claw to quickly lash it out towards the arm that had her weapon trapped, opening up enough room as she quickly drew her sword back to herself, then swung out hard with her shield, slamming the large piece of metal against Hyustus' chest, shoving him back hard, to then follow through with a quick stabbing motion towards his stomach. Hyustus though, quickly dropped his own blade down to angle her weapon off to the side in a loud screech of metal against metal, aiming to quickly raise one of his legs to kick out into Neras' stomach once more, knocking the wind quickly out of her and pushing her back a few quick steps, which he followed through with then, slashing out at waist height with his weapon.

The dragoness quickly stepped back, barely avoiding the sword that was slicing at her stomach, ears perking as she heard the two men off to the side, cheering and hollering towards the two, soon noting that plenty of other guards had arrived at the training area, intent to see what the new recruit was actually made of, since they had all heard by now the large dragoness in the city was to be recruited. She growled out though, clashing once more with the guard captain in a loud clang of metal against metal, the two swinging and clanging together their sword hard, sparks flying out. This repeated a few times, with neither really gaining any ground, which left Neras somewhat frustrated, which soon led to her growling out, and soon spitting out a large line of acid from her muzzle towards Hyustus, who gasped and quickly sidestepped the acid, though it did manage to land on the shoulder of his suit of armor, leaving him quickly removing the straps that held it on as Neras quickly dropped her shield and sword, “O..oh god...I..I'm sorry! I didn't mean…."

Hyusts quickly cut her off with a wave of his hand, laughing gently as he dropped his singed metal armor to the ground, “I had a feeling it was going to happen should you be pushed too far! Relax...I was ready for it! It is part of the reason I wore a suit of armor that could quickly be removed! It does seem that if you're pushed too far, to resort to diving back into basic instincts though, which...isn't bad persay, but something we'll certainly need to work on! If you are to be working as a guard, you can't let your emotions get the better of you!"

He paused, thinking about it a moment, before ahh'ing slightly at an idea. “Why don't you head down to the church district, there's a branch there I think might be able to suit you in such a thing. Look for The Order of The Aster, tell them Hyustus sent you." Neras gave a nod of her head, apologizing once more to the guard captain, pondering a moment. “M….may I keep these sir? They felt quite comfortable!" Hyustus laughed gently, nodding his head as he waved a hand off to the side, “Certainly. We are not short on equipment, consider them your first pieces of equipment from the city guard! Now be off with you, I have more to train!"

Neras nodded her head, bowing slightly once more at the waist, “T...thank you sir!" She then began to quickly dash off towards the church district, looking about and eventually finding the Order Hyustus had mentioned, moving towards the door curiously, opening it as she wondered what she was to find inside...
