In silence, the both of them walked up to their apartment. Finnick unlocked the door and they were greeted with the living room being a complete mess. It was a result of Finnick failing to find the other fox the night before. In his rage the small mammal took it all out on the furniture, slinging clothes and items on the ground. Even the coffee table was flipped over.
"Yeah, I know it's a mess. I haven't really done anything since-"
Finnick turned around to see that Nick was walking past him, kicking the clothes and items in his way to the side. Without saying anything more, Nick went to the bedroom and shut the bedroom behind him.
"Shit," Finnick grumbled to himself. The whole situation was really starting to piss him off.
"I'm really trying, you know!" Finnick yelled towards the bedroom.
Nick sat on the bed. The bedroom was completely trashed. The blankets were on the ground, the curtains were torn and there were shards of glass littering the wooden floor. It wasn't hard for him to imagine Finnick going on a rampage and tearing everything in the room apart.
What do I do now? Nick thought to himself.
He decided it was best to come back home. Ignoring the problem would only make everything worse. But there was so much happening in the fox's eyes.
Everything I've done so far has been for him, for us. We quit hustling, I quit the force.
Nick wasn't worried about finding a job at the moment. He had a pretty good deal with the owner of the complex and there was plenty of money left over to last the next few months. Just for good measure he checked the drawers and breathed a sigh of relief, seeing the stacks of bills still tucked away. But as he did that, a realization came to him.
Will I have to kick Finnick out? He has his van. I don't have anywhere else to go. Besides, this is all his fault. Why should I be the one getting all the shit?
That's when his nose started to twitch, picking up something. It was a scent, a distinct one. Following it, Nick was led to the bed and there it registered in his mind. It was the scent of Fangs, deep on the right side of the bed. Nick took a deep huff and felt his jaw clench. Before he realized what he was doing, Nick was already tossing clothes around the room. The bedroom was already a mess, but Nick figured he could do just a bit more damage.
The fox let his raw anger dictate his actions, ripping three of Finnick's shirts in half. He picked up one of the curtain rods and threw it down to the ground. Within fifteen minutes everything that Finnick had spared suffered the wrath of Nick. He flopped down on the bed, face-first into a pillow, digging his claws into the fabric.
"Are you done?" Finnick's voice rang from the other side. He expected Nick to knock down a few things, but it sounded like the red fox damaged much more than he actually did.
In response, Nick threw the pillow at the door, hearing it thump and land on the floor. Finnick didn't give an answer back, instead he returned to the living room, leaving Nick to bury his face deeper in the pillow until he fell asleep.
Finnick was laying on the couch, staring at the ceiling. He just didn't know what to do anymore. One minute Nick was eerily calm and the next minute he was going absolutely ballistic. The small fox just couldn't understand. He admitted that he cheated. Well, he got caught, but never denied it.
I know I cheated. I know this is serious. I know I fucked this up for the both of us. I fucked you over especially. You said you wanted to talk about it, but now you're just shutting yourself in, Finnick ranted to himself.
"What the fuck are we even doing..?" Finnick grumbled to himself as he rolled over to sleep.
Finnick wasn't sure when he managed to fall asleep. He woke up the next morning feeling worse than he did the night before. He sat up on the couch and with a yawn he started cleaning up the living room. As far as the fennec was concerned, this was just as much his apartment as Nick's and the least he could do was clean up his mess. It was after twelve o' clock that Nick finally came out of the bedroom, keeping his gaze low as he trudged over to the kitchen.
Finnick didn't say anything to the other fox. It didn't seem like the right time. After about five minutes, he watched as Nick retreated back into the bedroom with a bowl of oatmeal. In the bedroom Nick slowly ate his breakfast. It was bland without any sugar or anything else added to it, but the fox didn't care. He was thinking of right before he returned to the room, he shot a quick glance at Finnick. The way the small fox looked sent a pang of sadness through him.
You shouldn't feel bad for him, a nagging voice from within said.
But Nick also saw it as a good thing, seeing Finnick in just as bad condition. It meant that both foxes were feeling bad. There was even more proof by the fact the bedroom was in tatters thanks to the both of them. He soon finished his oatmeal and set the bowl down next to him, thinking about what was next move.
I know he's sorry. But is that enough? Nick pondered. Who's to say if I forgive him then things will just be good again? Will he just cheat on me again?"
He flipped the spoon back and forth between his digits, thinking about Finnick specifically. He looked awful back there. His eyes had deep rings underneath them and his fur was a total mess. I wonder if he actually got any sleep last night.
"Was he scared I wouldn't be there when he woke up?" Nick thought aloud, letting the question sink in for a bit.
I didn't speak to him at all. Even when he was trying to explain the mess in the living room... He was probably gonna warn me about this living room, too.
Finnick was sitting on the couch, feeling a bit stiff from sleeping on it. Stretching a bit and yawning, his ears perked as Nick slowly opened the door.
"H-hey," Nick said, giving a small wave. Finnick couldn't help but smile a bit, so happy that the other fox was talking to him.
"Hey, uh, what's up?" Finnick asked.
"Well..." Nick started, slowly walking over to the couch and sitting down. "I've been thinking...about what you said. About you being hurt, too."
"Nick," Finnick said, placing his paw on the taller fox's leg. "It really does hurt me that I did this to you. I know I can't ever take it back or undo this but I am-" his words were cut off by his phone buzzing.
The fennec gave an annoyed growl as he picked up his own and answered the call. "What?!" he shouted in the device and just a few seconds later his fangs bared and the call was cut short.
"Who was that?" Nick asked, it had been a long time since it had seen Finnick so riled up and the little vulpine wasn't as young as he used to be. He was a bit afraid that the fennec would burst a vessel.
"Fucking Fangs! I told you, Nick. He won't leave me alone. I told him to stay the fuck away from us. I even hit him over the head with my bat! The guys' crazy as shit!" Finnick snarled, tossing his phone back on the couch.
Nick rolled his eyes upon hearing the wolf's name. They were already in a bad enough position but now Fangs was harassing Finnick? From the look in the fennec's eyes, Nick could tell that Finnck was telling him the truth.
On the fennec's muzzle was a look that Nick hadn't seen in a long time. It was a look of fury that Finnick had back in the day when he was dead set on killing someone. Nick had seen it himself but luckily stopped the smaller fox before he went too far. But now Nick wasn't sure if he would stop Finnick when it came to Fangs.
"He's probably outside. Goddammit!" Finnick shook his head but his gaze softened once he made eye contact with Nick once again. He could only imagine how the fed fox must feel, just about to hear an explanation before it was all ruined by that damn wolf.
"Nick, I--" Finnick's words were ignored as Nick stood up from the couch and made his way to the front door. It only took Finnick a moment to figure out what Nick was going to do.
"Nick, wait! He's not here for me, I promise! But you can't go out there!" Finnick warned, jumping from the couch and following Nick. He wasn't worried about Nick walking out there but he was worried about anything Fangs was planning.
"You can't just go out there with him! He's fucking crazy! He's probably got a gun or something! Please, Nick. If anything were to happen to you I don't..." the fennec begged.
"Finnick..."
"Nick, please. I need you to trust me," Finnick said, looking Nick directly in the eyes.
"I'm just gonna go see for myself," Nick said, walking into the hallway towards the stairs.
"I'm going with you. I swear to God, if that shitty mutt lays a claw on you..." Finnick snarled, keeping pace with Nick.
"Heh. Thanks, Finn..." Nick smiled a bit as they walked out of the front doors of the lobby.
Side by side, Nick and Finnick walked out of the complex and down the sidewalk until they reached the parking lot. It was a weekday, meaning most cars were gone from the lot. It was easy to spot the cruiser just sitting there.
"There's the bitch," Finnick huffed. Nick leaned forward a bit, taking a closer look. There was Fangs, leaning against the ZPD vehicle, in his uniform. Something different about him was the bandages covering the left side of his face. Nick tilted his head, now knowing that Finnick was telling the truth about the bat. Without saying anything, Nick walked forward. Finnick hesitated but quickly followed behind.
"Ah, Nick and Finny. I was just about to pay the two of you another visit," Fangs smirked, looking down at his claws as if they were something unimportant.
Neither fox said anything in response to the wolf. But Fangs could clearly see the expressions on their faces and that gave him the satisfaction he wanted. He got what he wanted and a plan to make it all even better. The poor wolf could never decide which fox he liked best but he was lucky enough to get to Finnick first. The small fox actually surprised him in more ways than one.
Maybe I can even pound Nick, Fangs thought to himself. Heh, it'll be easy once I'm all done here.
"I see you still keep the rat around," Fangs scoffed, pointing a claw at Finnick.
"The fuck do you want?" the fennec snarled, taking a step forward.
"You might want to watch how you talk to me. I'm still on duty after all," the wolf chuckled.
Finnick glanced at Nick, Fangs saw this and took the opportunity.
"Awe, you still care about him? That's surprising. Last time I checked, if you care about someone you don't cheat on them," Fangs cackled. Before he could say anymore he felt his head jerk back and a jolt of pain flash through his skull. Nick swung again in the opposite direction, clocking him directly in the jaw.
"Ha!" Finnick chortled.
Nick considered throwing another punch, but he thought it out long term. They were in a public parking lot. He didn't want anyone to see this and he didn't need to get arrested right now. Fangs growled and held his cheek, feeling it already start to swell.
"Alright, that's it!" the wolf snarled. Nick and Finnick took a step as he reached for his belt, lifting up his paw again to reveal a pair of handcuffs.
"Finnick Fennec. You're under arrest," Fangs scowled.
"What?!" Nick and Finnick yipped at the same time.
"What the hell are you talking about? You gotta warrant?" Nick questioned, trying to keep calm.
"Actually, yes I do. And you'll love this," Fangs chuckled as he darted down and cuffed Finnick in a quick swoop.
"Remember when you asked me to help out Judy a while ago? Well when you left I became her new partner. We took on a little drug case that had been going on for a while. Long story short we interrogated a few of the dealers and guess who's name came up? They mentioned you too, Nick. But I'm gonna spare you for now," Fangs explained.
Nick was taken aback, just staring forwards and thinking about everything he was just told.
"I see you're trying to figure out what this all means. Basically, if you never asked me to help Judy out.. If you just would have taken the case alongside her... None of this would have ever happened. I can't thank you enough for that. Now, if you excuse me, Judy's waiting for me to bring ol' Finny back to the ZPD," Fangs smirked, picking the small predator up by his shirt.
"Let me fucking go!" Finnick snarled, trying to slip out of his cuffs as he was moved to the back door of the cruiser.
"Nick! I'm sorry! For all of this! I...I love you!" Those were the words Finnick managed to get out before Fangs slammed the door on him.
Climbing into the front, Fangs hot Nick with a much more serious look. "Now...You're not gonna tell anyone about this. Cause of you do...I'm gonna make sure the little fucker gets life!"
Nick said nothing, just turning around as heard Fangs laughing and the screech of tires behind him.
This is all my fault! Nick thought to himself as he dashed back to his apartment, tears streaming from his eyes. I'm the one who met Fangs. I set him and Judy up, and I let him into my house!
He fell on the couch, sobbing over what had happened. All the fury and hurt he felt towards Finnick had curved back to himself. All Nick could think of was what Finnick said before he was taken away. The fennec said that he loved him.
He looked so scared. What am I gonna do? I can't call Judy, she's the one who sent Fangs here. She knew what was gonna happen and she didn't tell me!
"What the fuck is going on?!" Nick yelled to himself, sitting up and wiping away the tears blurring his vision.
"I'm gonna get him back," the fox assured himself. "I just gotta figure out how. Everything's gonna be fine, Nick."
Nick laid back on the couch, not wanting to move at all. The cushions still had the small fox's scent on them, bringing a sense of calm back to Nick. For a slight moment it was like Finnick never left and he began to wonder what the fennec would say at a time like this. Nick was sure that Finnick would tell him to stop acting like a sniveling little bitch. Just thinking about his sharp tongue made Nick smile a bit. But thinking of Finnick only made Nick's thoughts shift to Fangs.
Deep down he wanted to blame himself for meeting Fangs in the first place...But he knew better...
We're gonna learn from this, Finn. I promise, Nick promised himself as he curled up against the couch. Even though things seemed to be worse than ever, the red fox couldn't help but smile.
"When he said he loved me...He meant it," Nick sighed. He could just feel the truth and emotion in the fennec's voice.
Yeah, Finnick you cheated on me...But we've been through way too much. You're not getting away from me that easily. Feeling a rush of motivation within him, Nick sprang up from the couch, reaching for his phone and began to dial a number.
Nick paced back and forth, still wondering if his idea would really work. Even though the number was dialed, he hesitated each time his paw hovered over the call button. Taking a deep breath and dialing the number once again, Nick pressed the call button this time.
"What is it?" the deep voice of Koslov growled.
Nick shuddered upon hearing the polar bear's words but he fought through his fear and forced himself to speak. "L-look, I know this is on short notice. But I really need to speak to him right now!"
The bear on the other side just gave a huff and after a minute or two there was another voice on the line.
"Ah, Nicky. My dear boy," Mr. Big's voice coiled through the phone.
"Look, Mr. Big! I know this is sudden, but I need your help!" Nick urged, gripping his phone even harder.
"Hmm, care to explain?" Mr. Big asked.
"Finnick's been arrested, but he didn't do anything. It was a drug bust, but we've been out of that game for years. Plus the cop that arrested him is..is.." Nick growled.
"...Is?" the shrew huffed again.
"Well, the point is it was personal, not business," Nick explained.
"...Nicky, my dear boy. We've had our differences in the past but that's behind us now..." Mr. Big paused, leaving Nick in absolute suspense. "I might have something that can help but you'll have to do something for me in exchange, Finnick too."
"Yes! Yes! We'll do anything! Anything!" Nick urged.
"Hmm, I'll make sure to hold you to that. We'll sort this all out in the morning. This isn't the first time I've dealt with a crooked cop and it won't be the last..." Those were the final words before Mr. Big hung up.
Nick slowly put his phone back into his pocket, taking a look around the living room. The light outside had faded with the coming dusk. The whole apartment felt empty without any of Finnick's growling or complaining.
