Paws of Fire: Unwritten Story - Chapter 10
#11 of Paws of Fire: Unwritten Book
I didn't want to stay in this world for long, so I had an idea...MONTAGE!
Chapter 10: Battle Preparations
Daniel quickly remembered Nick's speech in speech class. Aveyi, the white wolf sorceress that Nick and Uraku both described were eerily similar...and the history that Uraku spoke of connected so perfectly with the history of Aveyi as told by Nick. Daniel had to believe that they were one in the same. "Aveyi...Nick...and I also remember Uraku talk about an ancient evil...Drayak." Nick laid back in his chair, clutching the vial with Aveyi's fur in it. Nick felt so happy...a great relief. He had been watching her through his book, seeing her suffer from the loss of her mate. it hurt him every day...but he had to know what she was doing. Now he had another chance...to talk to her again. It wouldn't be as intimate as it once was, but he could let her know he was watching over her...in another world. "Daniel..." Nick looked at Daniel as if he had just fallen in love. Daniel looked side to side a little nervously. His crush for Nick sort of faded after finding an interest with the big furry tiger. Nick watched Daniel's expression, laughing a bit as he realized how amorous he must have looked.
"Sorry...I kind of lost myself there." Nick coughed promptly, ready to explain himself. "I have a huge favor to ask of you..." Nick beckoned Daniel onto the bed with him to sit for a chat. "Daniel...when you go back into the story. When you get the chance to talk to Aveyi...tell her that Nick is watching her, and loves her dearly." Daniel smiled, hugging his friend as he saw him start to weep with joy. Daniel couldn't help but feel his heart flutter...he never felt more important before. He was simply the messenger of good news, and he felt like a hero because of it. "It would be an honor, Nick." Once they settled down, Daniel raised a question he's been thinking about ever since he returned to Earth this last time.
"Hey Nick...how'd you get some of her fur out of the book?"
Nick smiled, holding the vial and examining it with a look of longing. "When I found Paws of Ice six years ago...an old man approached me and chatted with me about...oh hell I forget, but we ended up talking about the book. I was only 14, and my imagination was wild. He told me there was a secret world in the book that I could enter if I touched the pawprint. He also told me about certain rules the book had. I never remembered the critical ones until I had to feel them for myself. There are three critical rules that he told me, but I only remember two right now. The first rule is that the reader can choose any character from his or her book and invite him outside of the book for however long is desired. The story would continue on as long as that character remained outside. This made Aveyi need to return to help fight against Drayak. I was obsessed with her at the time...more for her sex than for her love. I secretly clipped this tuft of fur and kept it in this vial near my heart. The second rule i remember is that if you die in the book, you'll never be allowed to return to the story...and the story will continue to write itself until the book is destroyed. Hell, this isn't a rule, but if you destroy the book, I'm pretty damn sure the world vanishes with it."
"I wish I could remember the third one, but it's been so long." Nick sighed and shook his head, hiding his vial back behind his shirt. "Well...if you want training, I can give you some tips on how to fight. But tonight you need to go to bed early. You'll find that after being in the book for a while, your energy doesn't rejuvinate by simply returning, unlike your wounds."
Daniel nodded. He felt exhausted and just wanted to fall asleep on the bed. Nick stood up, gathering his things and heading for the front door. "I'll come by at seven tomorrow morning." Daniel had class at eight tomorrow, but he didn't care. He'd skip to get his body in shape as fast as possible. He wanted to know more of the story, and see how important he truly was. Maybe he could get Uraku to visit...
Nick left the dorm, leaving Daniel to sleep the rest of the night away. Daniel quickly took off his clothes, wanting to be in the buff to continue where he left off in the book. He snuggled himself back against a pillow against the wall, rubbing his bum into what he pretended was Uraku's groin. "Good night...Ura."

Nick proved to be one hell of a drill seargent, using negativity to boost Daniel's will to train. This method often didn't work, but calling Daniel a maggot, or a filthy FAG, seemed to really turn his gears up and push him to his limit. For the first week that they trained together, Nick concentrated on building up Daniel's agility. They both knew damn well that human muscle would never compare to the strength of some of the hunks in the story. They focused on what humans did best...quick wit. Before they could practice that, Daniel's body needed to be able to perform. He wore thick twenty pound weights on his ankles, wrists and a backpack loaded with heavy books. Nick ran with him around the campus ten times, the two of them running a total of twenty miles. Nick was sweating pretty bad, and breathing hard, but he could still speak every time they finished...well, once they started finishing later on. The first run, Daniel fainted around the 5 mile mark, the weights bearing him down too much. Nick wouldn't let him take off the weights...ever.
Every day after they ran, or couldn't run any more, they went to the gym to punch punching bags, making Daniel mimic every muscle-grinding movement he made. The training was intense...he couldn't feel his legs, arms, shoulders...anything. Nick had enough heart to offer to write down answers and help Daniel study while he laid on his bed, relaxing before each night was over. Daniel was losing spirit rapidly, starting to grow a dislike to Nick from the harsh way he spoke...but he wanted to impress his crush so much when he returned to the book.
Nick was especially angry when he saw Daniel take off the weights...it was one of the biggest offenses to Nick. One time, Nick made Daniel cry on the sidewalk after one of his shouts of disgust tore into Daniel's spirit, scrambling it to pieces.
After the second week of torture, Daniel was improving...but he was still lin such pain. Each day he begged Nick to let him take off the weights. Nothing hurt now unless he had those damn weights on...and that jerk Nick kept adding more each time Daniel seemed comfortable! He could only take them off during class when he was seated, or when he was relaxing in the tub or bed. He had to keep them on in the bathroom! Nick was just that stubborn about those damn weights.
The end of the third week had arrived, and Daniel woke up at seven in the morning again. It was Saturday, and he knew he was about to go through another day of torture. He almost wanted to cry.

Nick knocked rapidly on the door. "Get up, Dan. It's time to see what you've really got" Daniel rolled his eyes, putting on his weights and whimpering in pain as he slowly got up out of his bed. He stumbled over to the door, panting already as he opened to see the drill seargent Nick standing their, cross armed. "Daniel...take them off. No more weights...just the weight of yourself now." Daniel's eyes widened as he immediately dropped the backpack off first, then undid his wrists, then his ankles...he kicked them back, feeling a rush of pleasure surge through him with each step he took towards Nick. He felt so light...and walking felt so good. Nick laughed. "That's about how goofy I looked when I got to take my weights off." Nick walked away, looking back at Daniel. "Meet me in the woods where we first met in a couple hours. I think you'll want to try your new body out first." Daniel rushed back inside after realizing he was walking outside in the buff, quickly running into the shower to dress in his overcoat and black pants. As he lifted his leg to get his leg through the pants, he felts his leg sky rocket. His body was so used to the weights now that he couldn't guage himself correctly now. He glanced at his body in the mirror before concealing it behind his clothing. Washboard abs, a chiseled chest, bulging calves and arms...he looked like an olympic swimmer. "Wow..." Daniel saw the pay off of the three weeks of suffering, and threw away every ounce of regret he had for making Nick his instructor.
Daniel couldn't stop himself from running that morning. He felt so fast as he sprinted around the campus with such startling speed. The wind in his hair as if he was sticking his head outside of a car window. He even ran up to a tree and jumped up at it, pushing himself out and upward repeatedly between two mighty oaks. He jump-kicked again and again with such east, making it to the top of one of the trees and just holding on to the mighty branches as he looked down. He was so high up...but he didn't care. Getting down felt so easy now. He jumped from branch to branch like a squirrel, knowing which ones would burst under his weight and which wouldn't. He bounded his way back to ground level, yelling loudly in great triumph at what he had just done. He ran more, freaking some of the students out as he jumped over the walking passerbys with such ease. He tried backflipping at one point, but fell flat on his ass after miscalculating how much force to put in and overflipping.
After his two hours of fun, he quickly came to the forest where he met Nick the first time. Nick could see the joy in Daniel's eyes. "So...how'd you like it." Daniel ran up to Nick and gave him a hug. "Thank you thank you thank you!" Daniel was jumping up and down, bringing Nick with him and spreading the ecstasy. "Okay okay! We're only halfway done, grasshoppa!" Daniel snickered at the cheesy comment, letting go of Nick. "Okay...what's next?" Daniel swiveled his palms together, anticipating what he would be up against next. "Now you fight in the tournament, and show that Sazla what power you have!" Daniel tilted his head. "But...I don't know how to fight!" Nick laughed, thinking of what to say. "Well...if that's true...HAH" Nick suddenly threw his fest right into Daniel's face. Daniel's reactions had always been fast, and were no faster today...but his body was faster, and he easily dodged the blow. Daniel even followed up the punch by reaching around to Nick's back and shoving him down into the ground. Daniel looked at Nick, astonished at what he just did to him. "What the..."
Nick laughed, rolling onto his back. "Everybody knows how to fight, Dan. The real problem is...does the body know how to keep up with the fight?" Nick held out his hand, Daniel picking up the fallen friend. "I don't know kung-fu, or karate, or any special techniques. I only know how to keep myself fit, and how to keep my body up to the quickness of my mind in battle. It's early still, so why don't you get something to eat, and go start your tournament?" Daniel giggled some...he was excited. He felt like a great burden was relieved after so swiflty taking down Nick.

It was only 11 a.m., and the two friends were back in Daniel's dorm. Daniel sat down in his chair and pulled the book close to him. He gave a quick look over at Nick who stood in the doorway, nodding to his friend in approval. "Good luck, Daniel...and remember to give Aveyi that message." Daniel nodded and put his hand on the pawprint, entering the world to start the first round of the tournament.
