The Run [Part 1]
#1 of The Run
The Run
"Adam, you have got to be out of your fucking mind." I snorted as I gazed over the lip of the wall. On the other side was a sixty foot slide to the grassy loam of the enclave below. Beyond that cleared verge one hundred meters wide the forest started. In the distance I could see the dilapidated buildings that had been there before the enclave was built and sealed from the outside world.
Adam, a dashing fellow a year my senior, merely laughed and gave my shoulder a poke with his fist, "What? Scared? It's only two miles!"
"Two miles!" I scoffed and frowned at him. My drunk was wearing off and I knew the hangover would kick in before long. "If I run directly across the heart of the pack's turf." With my chin I nodded toward the old buildings, "More than three if I try to stay near the perimeter wall. And I might just get shot for trespassing."
"What, for being on the inside?" Adam smiled at me in that darling way he had, one corner of his mouth uplifted and a challenging glint in his dark blue eyes. With the darkness of early evening they were merely shadows under strong brows, gleaming in the harsh perimeter lighting only when he cocked his head in a challenging pose. I hated when he did that, because I had no defense against his charms.
And how well he knew it.
"Hey, you're the one who said you'd make a run across wolfland, to prove you had balls." He leaned close enough for me to smell the vodka on his breath and grabbed my crotch making me lift up onto my toes and grunt. Damnit, he knew all of my triggers, and it was nothing but a big tease. We hadn't done anything together in almost two years. At least we got over that rather harsh breakup. I've wanted him to blow me ever since. Or blow him. He had a serious piece of meat between his legs, the biggest I'd seen up to meeting him, and since. Just thinking about it made my vodka fogged mind spin.
"When I was fucking drunk off my ass, Adam." I growled, feeling trapped. Backing out would paint me a fucking pussy, and while I didn't mind bottoming, I was in no way fond of being looked at like a pussy. "And David's the one who brought it up."
Adam shrugged and leaned on the lip of the wall. The ever present patrols hadn't come by yet, but would if we tarried too long. They were seldom very nice when they ran gawkers away from the wolf enclave. "I think David wanted to bring other things up, but you were too drunk." Turning to lean his butt against the wall he braced his hands against the lip, "Well? You think you got the balls to run it, Steve?"
I leveled a stare at him and huffed a sigh, "Damnit, Adam, you know damn well I've got balls. How many dudes did you piss of back in Dunstin's last week?"
"Six, and you stood your ground damn fine." Adam clucked his tongue with a roll of his shoulders. He glanced up the road where the spill of white under the sodium yellow of the perimeter lights heralded the slow roll of an enclave security patrol. "So, you going to man up and make the run, or should we book it?" He nodded toward the car.
Walking to the wall I looked over at the steep angle downward. The surface was kept smooth to prevent the wolves contained in the enclave from climbing out, but not vertical. Why they designed it like a huge bowl and not just a vertical wall was beyond me. Running the wolflands was a pretty common test of bravery, but it was also a damn good way to get killed right good. All I had to do was make it from the far side of the bowl, where we were now parked, to the security gate on the opposite side. By law they'd have to let me out, as I was a human and not wolf, but I'd get a nice fat citation for my stupidity.
Adam dropped a hand onto my shoulder and leaned close "Hey, Steve, look... I'll pick you up at the station on the other side. Hell, I'll even give you a good damn blowjob." I cast him a sidelong glance and raised one eyebrow.
"Adam, if I survive running across the pack's turf unarmed and half drunk, you're going to owe me a month's worth of blowjobs." I pushed myself up onto the lip of the wall and swung my legs over. Gods only knew how many went into the wolves' turf and simply dropped off the face of the planet. Adam danced around the front of his car and yanked open the driver's side door.
"Deal!" He crowed, "And don't be such a wuss! You're unarmed, the worst they'll do is kick your ass and nibble you a bit! They don't kill people who are not trying to kill them, it's their own law!"
"Just... I don't want to be a wolf!" The engine of Adam's car rolled over with a deceptively light purr and the passenger side window hissed down.
"It's not a disease, Steve, you can't catch it. It's a hereditary condition." The engine growled and revved.
Fat fucking lot of good that would do me if a six foot tall, sentient, bipedal wolf wanted to take a chunk out of my ass, I thought as I kicked off the wall and plunged. The lycra of my workout sweats whistled shrilly on the smoothed concrete and I had a moment of self loathing. Leave it to my drunk, stupid ass to wear workout clothes for a jog across predator land. Not that I would be able to yell up at Adam to toss me my denim; the last I heard was the growl of his engine bellow into a full throated roar with a shriek of tires on pavement as he booked it.
Throwing out my arms to steady my headlong plunged down the inner curve of the bowl I braced for impact, not knowing just how hard the ground was. Lucky for my ignorant self the ground was rather soft; a dense loam under the grass soaking up the impact of my feet by absorbing them a good four inches. I attempted to throw myself forward into a roll but ended up doing an inelegant sprawl face first into the grass, knocking my wind out.
Panting, I lay there for a few seconds until a sudden circle of white light lit up the grass around me, abating its sickly looking sodium lit green to a more lively hue. "You there! Do not move!" a voice barked from high above and I rolled over to look up, shading my eyes against the blinding white of the security officer's spotlight. I did not know if they'd be brave enough to jump the wall and chase me so I lurched to my feet and legged it toward the treeline. "Halt, do not move! Return to the wall immediately!" I heard the officer bellow after me, but I paid no heed to that asinine order. I was busted, either right there at the wall, or if I made it all the way across to the security gate, so it was down to the run.
Two miles, I thought, no problems. Two miles, and I was in shape. I could do that in twelve minutes, easily.
Oh, yeah, on pavement without trees or grass or uneven ground tripping me up every third step. I caromed off of trees, crashed through undergrowth like a panicked bull, and in short made enough noise to awaken half the city. Not that I had to worry anything about the city. What I had to worry about was a hell of a lot closer at hand, and had scary keen ears. It was not long before I knew that they knew I was there.
The first whuffing howl, almost a question, issued somewhere from the forest to my left. Some distance off, but there was no mistaking that. The wolves were awake now. Heedless of how much noise I made I threw myself forward and lifted my legs for all I was worth. Two fucking miles, that's all I had to do. Two miles!
Another howl rolled through the forest, this from my right, still a distance away, but behind me. Good, I was ahead of them and making good time. Bursting through a wall of bracken, vines and bark tearing at the thin lycra of my workout shirt and pants, I found myself on an old, very corroded road. At least it was a road, however, and not choked with forest undergrowth, and I poured on the speed. Through the trees ahead I could see the shadowy bulking forms of the old town.
Pelting headlong down the time ravaged street I managed to keep my feet under me, heedless of rationing my strength as I charged as fast as I could toward the dubious shelter of those old, weather beaten buildings. If I could find some safe hidey hole for a few minutes I could catch my breath before making that last run toward the security gate. The town was roughly in the middle of the enclave, the location of the first appearance of the wolves a century before. What its name had been I did not know, and I did not care.
I just wish I hadn't drunk those last three screwdrivers, or the fifth of vodka worth of chasers before them. They boiled and rumbled about in my gut, threatening to cramp me or make me simply bend over and hurl right there in the middle of the street. My head was swimming and the world was swaying as the re-awakened vapors of the alcohol blew into my brain like a gang of Hell's Angels bent on chaos.
Blowing, winded, I staggered between the first two buildings, little more than shells of rotting wood and old wall panels and looked about quickly. Somewhere in the woods the bushes rustled. They did not crash or rattle, they rustled, but it did not make me think that the wolves were moving any slower than I was on their long legs built just exactly for running. Short whuffing barks and growls whispered to me from somewhere behind as the two wolves that I had heard found and conversed.
Fuck, they were close.
Slowing to a jog I tried to soften my steps and not make so much racket, but it was a fruitless effort. Wolves were known for their amazingly keen hearing, even if it was barely beyond my own human range, I was sure at that moment that they could hear a cat walking on concrete a mile away. Desperately I cast about for some dark hideyhole to pause in so I could let my head stop swimming and banging ever so painfully, and get my breath.
But they could smell, to, and a hell of a lot better than they could hear. I'd read somewhere that canine night vision was not much better than humans, but they saw movement far more clearly. Not that they had any worry there, either, because the towering lights around the perimeter cast the entire enclave in a light like the full moon. Growing desperate I increased my pace, hoping that I could catch my wind as I jogged rather than fled in blind haste.
That thought was dashed when a trio of tall shadows crossed the street at the far end of the ramshackle, beaten old town. Wolves! More of them, but ahead of me. I quickly darted to the side and pressed myself against the corner of a building shadowed from those damnable lights. Just how many of them were there? Did they breed viably?
I knew the answer to neither question, having paid almost no attention to the biology teacher when he talked about the growing anomalies of non-human species arising in hugely separated locations on the planet almost simultaneously. We got wolves, other cities got centaurs, others satyrs. It was a pot luck crapshoot, but it had happened almost overnight, all over the globe, in small locations.
Most were sealed off swiftly, like our own enclave, while others such as centaurs were grudgingly accepted into the societies where they appeared. No one yet knew how they had arisen, or how they maintained their populations. To my knowledge no one bothered to keep a census of them, or at least our local wolf population.
Casting about for a new direction to flee I stepped out from the corner of the building and looked up and down the street I was crossing. It led away from my destination, but I hoped to find a cross street not blocked by more wolves. Jogging as quietly as I could down the street I crossed it and slipped toward another cross street, more an alley, and stopped to lean around the corner. The alley seemed clear of so much as even a dumpster, not that the wolves needed any. The charnel stench of old meat and feces assailed my nose but I choked it back. They had to shit somewhere, and I doubt the plumbing worked any more.
Watching my step I sidled hastily down the alley, stepping around debris and water puddles. My running sneakers were thankfully more quiet than my usual wont of hard soled boots or dress shoes. Reaching the end of the alley I glanced out again, finding the adjoining street clear. I was behind a row of buildings; a service drive for delivery trucks once. Coal chutes turned into basement entries hunkered against the back of most of the buildings. Some stood open, others closed, while others had caved in over the years. I stepped out into the alley and turned toward the next one I saw.
I was almost there too, completely focused on my goal, and the only hint that I had utterly fucked up was the growl that issued from a shadowed door recess to my left. The sound of claws on cement shattered the night with a sound that was both scratch and screech, causing me to stop in sudden fear and spin toward the sound. The dark mass of a wolf was only a pace away by the time my eyes focused on it and even before I could scream it slammed into me with a perfect shoulder tackle. The impact took me off my feet bodily, huge hands raking across the lycra of my exercise shirt and pulling downward even as I fell through the air. I crashed to the ground with a pained explosion of breath and the beast continued over me by its own momentum.
Rolling over hastily I scrambled to get my feet under me again to run, but my pants where half way down my thighs and I grabbed for them, but they were yanked away, and I with them, before I could get them back up. The snarling beast snatched at that easy handhold and jerked me back off my feet, sprawling me on my chest, mewling like a kitten. Scrabbling my fingers on the concrete, as I was dragged bodily by the pants tangled on my sneakers, I vainly tried to find something with which to combat the beast, but other than a few small pieces of broken pavement I came up empty.
Then, abruptly, I was free. My pants had given up their fight with my sneakers and the wolf was left with nothing but a bundle of fabric. Panting in a panic I lurched to my feet, clad in nothing more than a shirt, my naked ass probably glowing like a beacon for every wolf within miles, and made a sprint for that alley.
The wolf paced me almost effortlessly, loping along on strangely slender legs as if my terrified flight was the awkward run of a toddler. I looked sidelong, eyes rabbit-wide in horror, and saw the wolf beside me, its muzzle hanging open as it savored the chase, tongue hanging out of the corner of its toothy maw. Then it lurched and I was in no way prepared to jink out of the way. Its shoulder slammed into me heavily and, once again, I found myself sprawling ungainly through the air. A void of darkness rose up from the earth to my right and, the last thing I knew before some concussion ripped my wits away, I was falling into that void with a wolf atop me.
The decent down the coal chute was blessedly smooth but the floor that met me was concrete hard. I let out a whoosh of pained breath as I came down hard on my upper back. My legs, pale naked in the diffuse light, flew over my head, somersaulting me into the inky blackness of some wolfland basement. I heard the skirl of claws on steel as the wolf slid down behind me and, abruptly, everything went dark.
Not the darkness of unconsciousness and, blessed be, not the final darkness of death, but the simple darkness of having every source of light stolen away. Winded, witless, and disoriented I righted myself, or at least found out by gravity where down was enough to put my head above my feet, and crouched there, unmoving. I heard an ungodly rattle and crash amidst the growls of exertion as the wolf, unseen somewhere a few feet away in the inky void, slammed both halves of the cellar door shut and, from the sound of it, shoved something through the handles so that it could not be opened.
Fuck! Fuck, fuck, oh my god fuck, I am so dead! The wolf was locking me away in some private lair to rip my guts out and eat my heart before my poor, stupid, drunk ass was even cold. I whimpered as I heard the hiss of paw pads and skirl of claws on steel herald the wolf's decent down the ramp. A solid grip at my throat ended the pitiful noises coming from my breast. I found myself being pulled to my feet and I grasped at the frighteningly powerful arm clutching my throat. To my surprise the arm was no thicker than my own, and they were not exactly slender, but it was scary strong.
The strength of the wolf's arm should not have been the thing I feared most, but its easy power was frightening. If the wolves ever got out and decided to stake their claim no man could stand against them without a fucking serious amount of firepower. The wolf shoved me back and released me to stagger, then shoved the flat of a hand against my chest forcing me back again. Something yielding crashed into the back of my legs and I fell back onto, or into, it. A couch. Age worn and tattered soft, its ancient springs squeaked and groaned as I fell back into it.
Lying there, helpless, half naked, I waited for the next strike to come. One could say that, for all intents and purposes, I was fully naked because a shirt was hardly going to cover anything that needed to be covered for the sake of modesty. Not that it mattered, the beast would eat what it wanted to eat when it got to it. I just hoped it killed me quickly.
FUCK YOU, ADAM! I screamed in my mind. The sonofabitch had goaded me into my own suicide and was probably giggling madly about it. Not that he had expected me to just up and get gutted so easily, but he browbeat me into it over the promise of a blowjob. Maybe even a good ride, but now I would never get even that. He'd never get my dick in his mouth again, even if I did somehow survive this hopeless deathtrap.
I lay there, waiting, for what seemed like an hour but was probably only a minute before I realized that the wolf had not continued its assault. It was pacing, the sound of the beast's strangely light and yet heavy footfalls moving from one side of the darkness to the other. It was also growling, as if in confusion. I lay there, tracking the motion by ears and trying to follow it with my eyes, and panted heavily. My head was clearing, the adrenaline of my impending demise having flushed the vodka quite completely out of my system, but my heart was still going mach five.
What the fuck was that gods be damned beast doing? Back and forth, rumbling and grumbling to itself in the darkness in which it could probably see far better than I could. My eyes slowly adjusted to the darkness but that did little to make things more clear. I could pick out a shadow, almost, against some diffuse light that was more a tease than a revelation. I took a last deep breath and let it out through my nose with a shuddering sigh. The wolf halted, its ever-so-dim shadow disappearing into the gloom of the basement, and I quailed. I could hear its heavy breathing somewhere distressingly close.
Freakishly close, because I felt a sudden hot gust of warmth across my naked crotch. With a mousy squeak I jerked back deeper into the couch, a whole six inches maybe, my eyes going wide. What the hell? It sniffed me! No, it sniffed my crotch! What did I do, piss myself? I had no way of telling what was sweat and what was piss, but I did not smell any of the later while I smelled a whole lot of the former. And wolf. Oh yes, I smelled wolf. A lot of wolf.
Again I felt that warm waft of air across my crotch and, again, I squeaked in a girlish manner that would have had my friends laughing themselves into purple-faced fits. I clutched at the age worn cushions of the couch and waited, not knowing what the fuck the beast was doing. But, somewhere deep in the back of my mind in dark places best not talked about in public, I knew exactly what the wolf was about. WHY it was about it I had no way of knowing, but I knew. I was just too scared out of my fucking wits to realize it.
Well, until it decided to stop sniffing and lick. Oh yes, that lick told me pretty damned well what was going on, and I could only cough in surprise even as I grunted. I had to admit, the broad warm swath from balls to cock tip felt pretty damn nice. Strange, mind you, but nice. I'd never been licked by anyone other than my boyfriends, the few I had enjoyed. The wolf paused after that lick, I could feel the touch of fur just teasing my flaccid tip. The wolf was watching me, I could sense it, looking up along my body while its chin hovered just above my cock. Yes, I was being watched, and measured, and tasted.
And tasted again; another slow, measuring lick that lifted my naked balls and drifted upward along my flaccid length. I'm a grower, not a shower. In its current state I could easily have hidden it entirely behind one hand. If that damned wolf kept licking, however, I would be up despite my horror and startled surprise that it was clearly more interested in licking my cock than eating me like a buffet. When I'm up, as Adam once said, I'm UP. Not overly large, but in no way small or even average, I like to think I'm just right. The boyfriend, the desperate fuck buddy I picked up, after Adam, complained about it though; too big for him. I rather doubted that, if that wolf's muzzle was as big as I thought I saw before it threw me into its private lair, that I would be too big for it.
For her, for him, I had no way of knowing, but that muzzle had appeared to me as big as a steam shovel. And it was licking me, over and over again, each stroke light and warm and surprisingly gentle. At the end of each lick it stilled over me, watching. Despite the hammering of my heart I could feel my erection awakening, some of the fear melting away at the strange surprise of being seduced by a wolf.
A wolf, of all things. Yes, sentient if all the reports where accurate, but a wolf nonetheless. A beast. A beast that, by all appearances, was enjoying the ultimate cocktease. Blinking, feeling brave despite my own startled dichotomy of revulsion and arousal at being licked to arousal by an intelligent, anthropomorphic wolf, I tentatively reached down with one hand. I felt the nose first, and it did not withdraw, shifting slightly to nudge my fingers, and then the whiskers. Damn it was solid, that monster's muzzle, but the fur was warm and soft, slightly coarse and smooth at the same time. Lightly I traced my fingers upward onto the bridge of its muzzle just behind its nose, and pressed.
It was a light touch, fucking brave as hell considering it could just as well have ripped my guts out, but the wolf accepted it. The muzzle dipped under my fingertips and the tip of the beast's tongue traced lightly across the underside of my glans. It was electric. I hissed in a breath and squirmed, letting out a soft sigh as I realized that, if I did what the monster wanted, if I gave it what it wanted, I might just survive the night.
And I was so going to kick Adam's ass. No, I was going to kick his balls, as hard as I could. I was going to launch that mother fucker into space.
