In the year 2053, the old government allowed manufacturers to build flying cars after the Magnetic Lifter Coil was developed the year before. Each Major Car company was allowed to produce 3,000 models and variations of such as they pleased. Most were Sedans, few were SUVs. For the First year everything seemed great and they were only 4 casualties due to lifter coil failure, and all were due to poor maintenance.
The Coil used opposing electromagnetic energy to form a field under a vehicle and cause it to oppose both the North and South Fields on the planet. Depending on if the car was further north or south on the planet, the coil would adapt their energy output to compensate for the change in polarity.
However in the middle of 2054 the Government quit funding the program due to the advance in Spaceship technology. Another reason which was also true was that many people who owned one of the vehicles said "While it's nice to fly, it's in a way impractical."
Nowadays lifter coils can be found on exotic cars and most Police Vehicles including Advanced Interceptors.
