Intertwined - Chapter 2
H The sky was lit a bright pinkish red and the air was clear as crystal....
The sky was lit a bright pinkish red and the air was clear as crystal. The road Skylar and Vincent walked on was a quiet, suburban street, rarely traveled by any vehicle besides soccer mom vans. The scent of trees complemented the chirping sounds that emitted from their branches. Just being surrounded by the scenery would make the most stressful workaholics feel tranquil.
Skylar couldn't keep his mind off of Vincent. The way he walked, the way his fur blew in the wind, the way his tail wagged back and forth; it all made him smile. He couldn't help but crush on his friend. He was tall, muscular, sweet, and protective. Every good quality you could find in a guy you could find in Vince.
Vincent looked over at the boy he walked with. He didn't find it creepy at all that Sky was beaming stares into his back; it actually flattered him a bit. Any third party citizen who glanced in their direction could easily see Sky's puppy crush, but for some reason Vince was completely blind to it. Vince thought Sky was cute, but he thought of him as more of a little brother than a potential boyfriend. Thoughts like this clouded the chances of them getting too close to one another, but Sky was too shy to make a move even if he did have a chance.
"You okay man?" Vincent asked in the utter silence. Skylar didn't lift his eyes off of the Fox's tail wagging back and forth in the wind. The luscious red fur reflected light almost like a mirror into Skylar's eyes. "Sky, you okay?" he asked again.
"What?" he replied, breaking concentration. He quickly glanced back and forth trying to figure out what was going on around him. As he exited his daydream and entered reality, he found himself confused on which was which.
"You seem like you've got something on your mind. Are you okay?"
"Yeah! Yeah I'm fine," Sky replied nervously. He looked back down at Vince's tail and laughed a bit, remembering the thoughts that he was having.
Skylar had always been a daydreamer. He'd think of new places, new people, and new events off the top of his head, turning them into his mind's own little puppet show. He observed his surroundings carefully before entering his dream worlds so that they could be as vivid and realistic as possible. As he grew older and older, he found himself creating these alternate realities subconsciously. He'd make up an all new world and not even know he was in it. Although it was definitely an amazing gift to possess, it also caused a lot of confusion when he'd mix them together with reality.
"So are you sure you can't make the concert this weekend?" Vincent asked as a yellow minivan drove by.
"I'm trying to get my parents to budge, but they're still really pissed about my grades."
"Damn. I'd hate to have your parents. Mine don't really care what I do or who I'm with. As long as the cops aren't showing up at my door, they're cool."
"I wish I had yours," Sky replied, "mine have to know where I'm at, who I'm with, and what I'm doing at all times. I mean it's cool that they care and all, but I'm 14; I need my space you know?"
Vincent nodded and proceeded to walk forward. The walk home was about a mile for Sky and another half mile or so for Vince. Ever since they met, Vincent would always walk Sky to his doorstep and then proceed on to his apartment farther down the same road. Every day they reached his doorstep, Skylar hoped that Vincent would give him one of those "I just dropped you off so now I'm going to give you a goodbye kiss to show I care" type kisses that he saw in every romantic flick, but that was just his mind daydreaming again.
"Hey dude," Vince called out, "I don't really have any plans until later tonight. Do you want to chill or something? We could go hang out at the park for a couple of hours." Sky's ears perked up and his tail began to wag faster and faster.
"Uh, sure! I haven't been on a jungle gym since middle school." His excitement dropped down a bit when he remembered the situation he had put himself in. "Crap; I forgot I was grounded. I have to be home by 3:30."
Vincent shook his head and chuckled before replying. "Come on man, you're already grounded. What are they going to do? Re-ground you?" Skylar looked down at his watch and bit his lip as he thought. As scared as he was of his parents, this was probably the only alone time he'd get with Vince.
'Maybe,' Sky thought to himself, 'Just maybe he'll make a move.' He looked back up at Vince with a worried face and chewed on his lip a bit more. Vince turned around and began to jog towards the suburban park in front of them. He lifted his tail up high and taunted Sky with it.
"So," Vince called out, "You coming?" Skylar threw away the worried look and regained his happy yet nervous face. He lifted his feet up high and began to chase his crush down towards the park. The two boys looked like small children playing a game of tag as they ran down the street, but that's exactly what they were at heart.
As they rapidly approached the warm, green grass, their speed began to decrease. The simple game of "you can't catch me" turned into a game of "holy crap why did I think it was a good idea to run here". Vincent came to a halt in front of the basketball court and put his paws on his knees. His deep breaths almost sounded like wheezing and he realized that at the age of 16, he didn't have the same amount of energy that he did at 10.
When Sky finally caught up, Vincent's breathing was almost back to normal. He quickly sat down on the blue and red swing set to give his feet a break from the constant pressure. He looked up at Vincent who was standing in front of him with his arms crossed.
"About time slow poke!" he yelled out, "you were at least 30 seconds behind me!"
"20 tops," he laughed, blushing in embarrassment.
"Yea right! It's okay though, I know I'm hard to keep up with." Vincent uncrossed his arms and jumped through the sandy ground. He pushed his way up onto the brightly colored jungle gym and skipped his way over to the wobbly bridge.
Sky hastily rushed behind him to keep up. He hopped his way up the five small stair steps and passed the swirly slide before reaching his friend on the bridge. They both leaned their arms onto the handrails and gazed over at the bright sun, barely shaded by the small clouds.
"Seems like forever doesn't it?" Vincent asked softly. "I mean, middle school was so long ago, almost seems like forever."
"Maybe for you, I was running around this playground only last year." They both chuckled a little and continued to watch the sun get blocked from the moving clouds. Sky closed his eyes softly and took in a big breath of fresh afternoon air.
"Hey Sky?" Vince asked without turning his head away from the view, "Do you like me?" Sky ripped his head towards Vince and his eyes widened drastically.
"You mean like-like or just like?"
"Like-like."
"Why would you think that?" He swallowed the lump of nerves in his throat and continued to stare with wide eyes.
"Because you're always looking at me like you're in love with me. I could be mistaken, but that's what it looks like."
"Well, I-uh."
"Don't be scared to tell me the truth." Vince looked deep into Sky's eyes and smiled. Sky melted at the sight of his swirling blue irises and took a step closer. He gathered up every bit of courage he had left in him and gently shut his eyes. He grabbed the back of Vince's head and pulled him in for the kiss. They're muzzles locked and Sky's body was filled with passion as they shared their first exchange of strong emotions. Sky slowly pulled he head back and smiled in glee, but as he opened his eyes, his world came crashing down.
He was daydreaming again.
'How?' Sky thought, 'How could that have all been fake? The kiss seemed so real, so true; how could it have all been my imagination?' He turned towards Vince in hope that he didn't notice the fantasy Sky was having. Vince was still glaring out at the sun, completely oblivious to what was going on in the mind next to him. He opened his mouth to speak.
"Hey Sky?" Vince asked without turning his head away from the view. Sky looked over at him and prayed he was going to ask the same question as he did in the dream. He took a gulp in and stared in anxiousness. "Do you know a kid named Alex?"
Sky exhaled in disappointment before responding. "Yea I know a few people named Alex, what does he look like?"
"He's a short beagle. His fur is brown and white and he's in your grade. I thought maybe you'd know him."
"Nope. It doesn't ring a bell." Sky replied. His disappointment was getting the best of him. He quickly turned away and slid down the slide next to him. When he reached the bottom of the blue tube, he stood up and walked slowly away from the playground. Vincent just stood in confusion.
"Where are you going?" he called out loudly.
"Home," Sky replied without turning at all, "I don't want to get in trouble."

"Oh my gosh, look at that kid!" Alex shouted to his love. He pointed down at the picture of a dorky looking preteen wearing glasses and braces. Adam laughed loudly and pointed down to the picture of another boy on the same page.
"No, look at this one! He looks like a cow on steroids!" They both continued laughing as they examined the page some more. Alex grabbed the corner of the yearbook and turned it to the next page. Adam scanned the paper quickly and threw his finger down on another photo. "He's pretty cute, don't you think?" Alex glanced down at the husky and read the named that corresponded with it. "Skylar? Never seen him around."
Adam shut the book closed and stretched his arms out wide. He sat the book down on an end table and laid back in the bed he was sitting on. Alex pounced onto the bed right beside him and leaned his head on Adam's chest. "So," Alex said, "did I tell you I'm going to have my first sleepover tonight?"
Adam shifted farther towards the end of the bed, making Alex's head fall to matress. "No you didn't. I'm surprised your dad is letting you."
"Me too, he said now that I'm in high school that he trusts me enough to have one. Isn't that awesome?" Alex laughed and scooted closed to Adam, but once again, Adam moved away. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah I'm fine; I've just got a lot on my mind right now." Alex reached his paw up and placed it on Adam's shoulder.
"If you want to stay over here with me and Blake, I'm sure my dad won't mind."
"I wish I could, but I've got other plans for tonight." Alex's face grew puzzled and eyes fell onto Adam's face.
"Other plans?"
"Yeah. I'm meeting my friend's parents for dinner; it's really important I make it." Alex grew even more confused.
"I thought you came down here to see me? You don't want to spend the little time you have here with me?" Adam looked away from Alex. He knew that there was no way out of it; he knew he had to tell Alex before the night was over, but he was hoping he had more time before then. Alex knew something was up.
"Look Alex. I really don't know how else to tell you this, so I'm going to just say it how it is." He took a deep breath and kept his eyes turned from Alex; he was ashamed. "This whole long distance relationship has been really hard for me. I love you and you know that, but it's hard to be with someone without being able to see them in person." Alex began to become nauseous as he waited for Adam to continue. "I met another guy in New York. He's really nice and caring, and he can actually be there in person with me."
"What are you trying to say?" Alex asked with his quivering voice. He knew exactly what Adam was trying to say, but was too scared to face it.
"Alex, I love you so much and I always will, but I need someone who I can see. I need someone I can be with, someone I can hold when I'm upset. As much as you mean to me, you can't be there for me when I need you. You're over 2,000 miles away."
Tears began to flow down Alex's face. He couldn't understand how someone he loved so much could just leave him like this. Adam was his first love, his only love, he couldn't afford to lose him. "Haha very funny," Alex said as he wiped a tear from his cheek, "nice joke Adam."
"I'm really sorry Alex. I love you and you know I'd do anything for you, but this just isn't going to work out. I'm really, really sorry." Adam put his paw down on Alex's back. Alex wanted to grab onto him and hold him forever, but he knew that it was irrational and impossible. Instead, his hurt turned to fear and his fear turned to hate. Within a matter of minutes, his love for Adam became weak compared to his hate for Adam. He shoved Adam's paw off with his shoulder and curled into a ball, grabbing onto the stuffed bear Adam gave him for their first anniversary.
"I don't know what else to say to you Alex. I'm sorry," Adam whispered. He tried putting his paw back onto Alex to comfort him, but Alex didn't want anything to do with the man who broke his heart.
"Don't touch me," Alex growled.
"I'm sorry Alex, I don't have a choice. It has to be this way."
"Get out of my house Adam." Adam stayed seating, worried about his past boyfriend. Alex's rage continued to grow. "I said get out!" He screamed. Adam quickly scrambled to his feet and grabbed onto the door handle. He looked down at the boy that he had left one more time before turning away for the last time and proceeding through the exit.

Vincent tapped his claw down on the desk as he waited for the next instant message. His "friend" Rodger was on the other end typing up replies to all of Vincent's questions. The dinging noise sounded on his computer as text pushed up onto the screen. He read it aloud.
"I'm not sure we should hit the same house again Vince. Last time you almost got caught." Vincent growled under his breath and pushed down on his laptop's keyboard.
"I don't care that I almost got caught," he typed, "I want to hit Alex's house again. I didn't get to finish what I started and now I'm going to. Capishe?" His eyes did not lift off the screen as a vertical line flashed on and off, waiting for input. Finally, a reply.
"You can do it on your own then. I'm not getting caught by the cops." Vince slammed his fist down onto his desk and the glasses and pens that laid on it rattled. He typed swiftly and roughly and hit the enter button much, much harder than necessary.
"Fine, I will."
He swiped his hand and grabbed his car keys off of the wooden surface. As he jumped to his feet, the office chair he was sitting on was launched back from the pressure he pushed off with. He ripped his way through his door and proceeded outside and into the apartment parking lot.

Once he reached his black Nissan Xterra, he fiercely revved up the engine and backed out of his parking spot. His foot pushed the gas pedal hard and he drove without care in the direction of Alex's home. He was going to finish what he started, but this time, with no lookouts.

Blake fixed his head fur in the window next to Alex's front door. He couldn't help but admire the fancy architecture and stunning decorations that covered the outside of the mansion. His claw extended outwards as his pushed the doorbell button and listened to the chime it created. He tapped his foot quickly as he waited and waited for someone to answer the front door.
Finally, the door cracked open and revealed a short Jack Russell Terrier. Without any hesitation, the Terrier pushed his way through the door and shoved Blake aside with no care at all. Blake took a step back and looked over at the boy that assaulted him. "Hey!" he screamed out, "are you going to say sorry or what?"
The boy turned around and examined Blake fully. Blake could easily see the tears running down the Terrier's face and the frown of sorrow on his muzzle. "Sorry man, my bad." He quickly rushed to his car and drove away without a second thought. Blake stood in disbelief on the doormat of the mansion. He peered his head into the house and looked around the grand entrance.
"Hello?" Blake called out across the walls, "is anyone there?" The only thing he heard in return was the echo of his own voice. He cleared his throat a little before repeating his call and hoping for an answer. "Hello?" Again, no response.
"Alex? If you're there, I'm coming inside now." He slowly crept his way inside the house one foot at a time and softly closed the door behind him, but left it partly open due to his suspicion and confusion of the situation he just stepped into.
He glanced back and forth admiring the scenery that surrounded him. On his right he saw a large piano made out of dark cherry wood. On his left he saw pictures of Alex and what he imagined to be Alex's parents. Blake reached his hand out for the hand rail and he pushed his way up the grand staircase in the middle of the room. He began to hear high pitch noises coming from the hall on his right.
As he made his way down the hallway, he looked back and forth and each room he passed. Bathroom after restroom after closet, every time he passed a door the sounds got a little louder. He neared the end of the hallway, where the sound's volume was at its greatest. Blake listened to the noises emitting from behind the door farthest from the entrance to the home.
He reached his hand out and pushed on the door very slightly. The whimpering noises gained volume and as the entrance grew wider, Blake realized where they were coming from.
He looked down at Alex, laying on his bed in fetal position with a stuffed bear grasped in his arms. He was crying loudly and shaking slightly, but was completely unaware that Blake was behind him.
"Alex?" Blake said softly, "Are you okay?
"I said get out!" Alex screamed out as he threw his bear at Blake. The fluff-filled animal made contact with Blake's chest and he caught it in his arms. Alex turned around to realize the mistake he had just made. "Oh my gosh," he said as he stopped crying, "I'm so sorry, I thought you were someone else."
"It's fine," Blake laughed, "don't worry about it." Alex sniffled as he wiped away his remaining tears. He quickly jumped up onto his feet and tried to play it off cool. "Are you okay Alex?"
"No, not at all," Alex replied, "my boyfriend just left me, he's already got another boy, and I'm stuck here crying my eyes out while he's eating dinner with his boyfriend's parents. It's just not fair." He turned away from Blake and looked out his window and to the stars.
"Come on," Blake said to him, "don't let that douche get you down." Alex chuckled a bit under his breath. "Hey, I'm being serious. It's his lost, not yours. I bet you're twice as good as whatever guy he's with now." Alex turned back towards Blake and sat a little closer.
"You mean it?"
"Yea of course! I mean look at you. You're cute, sweet, and smart. I doubt there aren't guys all over you."
"Yea," Alex thought aloud, "Yea you're right." Alex's mind was cloudy and scattered. He was scared and broken, but the attention he was getting from Blake made him feel more comfortable. The hurt in his mind was being put aside, allowing the care he received from Blake to fill his emotions. He leaned in closer to Blake and thought about nothing more than him. "Maybe I should show him what he's missing."
Alex inclined even closer to Blake's muzzle, and they both knew what was coming. Alex kissed Blake softly, but Blake pulled back immediately.
"Alex stop. You're only coming onto me because you're hurt. You just need to relax for a second."
"I am relaxing," he replied, "I know what I'm doing." He leaned in and kissed Blake again, but once again, Blake pulled away.
"Alex come on, I have a boyfriend." Alex completely ignored the comment and kissed him a third time, but with more lust than either time before.
Blake wanted to pull away again. He wanted to just push Alex away and back off and think about his boyfriend Chris, but he couldn't help but let his sexual drive take control. He thought Alex was cute and attractive; sadly that was enough to convince Blake. He pushed his muzzle forward and kissed Alex back as he grabbed his hips firmly. Alex pulled on Blake's neck and they fell back onto his bed. Both boys were clouded by emotions and neither one had the courage to stop what their minds were telling them to do.

Vincent sat outside in his car and watched the windows of the mansion. He could see through the windows that lights were on in a few rooms, including the living room and Alex's room. He knew that he had arrived early, which meant he had to wait even longer before making his way inside.
His eyes scanned the walls of the building, looking for security cameras. He noticed one near the front door of the house and another near the left side of the house, but that wasn't the only thing he saw. Along with the security machinery, he also spotted that the front door wasn't fully closed. The entrance was left slightly open, which also meant it wasn't locked.
Vince contemplated the two options that he had. He could take the safe route and wait for everyone to go to bed or he could sneak in through the front door and improvise a plan once on the inside. 'If I could get inside,' he thought, 'there are probably many places to hide. A mansion this big must have a lot of hidden areas.'
He flipped his black hood onto the top of his head and popped open the driver's seat door. Remembering where the cameras were, he kept his head down low so he would not be identified if caught. He approached the open front door and slowly pushed his way in. looking around carefully, he crept inside the large home.
Although he knew the house was huge from the outside, he never even imagined how big the living room was going to be. Just this one room alone was larger than Vince's entire apartment. It was at least 2,000 square feet and filled with fancy furniture and portraits.
He walked slowly down the room, watching every entrance as much as possible to make sure he wasn't going to get caught. Each step he took created a very look smacking noise similar to someone walking on hardwood floors with high heels.
A loud thumping noise echoed from a nearby hallway. Vincent quickly ripped his head up and perked his ears in the direction of the noise. He crouched down as he walked up the staircase next to him, making sure he could hide behind the railing if someone were to come from the hall beside him.
He paused for about a minute or so before deciding to head towards the sound. He looked back and forth through the brightly lit hallway, making sure he always had a spot to dash to if someone approached. He crept gradually down the hall, still crouching, searching for Alex and hoping not to be found.
He noticed at the end of the hallway there was a room with the light on. He quickly tip-toed over to it and pressed his ear up against the door, listening for a voice or sound that would indicate whether or not Alex was on the other end.
After a few more minutes of silence, he reached his paw down for the door handle. He pushed the door forward a bit, just enough to fit his head into. He peeked his face inside of the crack and instantly spotted two people on the bed in the far end of the room. One was Alex, he was sure, but the Dalmatian on top of him wasn't familiar a bit.
"Did you hear that?" The Dalmatian asked Alex. He quickly turned his head around and looked directly into Vince's eyes. Vince immediately ripped his head out of the door and ran down the hallway at full speed. He rapidly approached the staircase, but before proceeding down them, his body petrified in fear.

A tall man, about 40 years of age or so, was standing next to the front door. "Shit," Vince whispered loudly. The man looked up the stairs and spotted Vince standing at the top, frozen in surprise. Run forward and face this man, or turn around and face the Dalmatian. Either way, he was going to get caught. Either way, he was going to have to face Alex.
