Passionate Escape: Chapter 3
Finally I'm done with chapter 3. I apologize for taking so damn long but I had a long period of artistic inactivity due to personal reasons. Anyways, good news is that I'm getting back into the swing of things! There are several more chapters planned, along with a new story already in the works. Hope everyone enjoys!
Amy's light green Sedan travelled across various streets in a blur, making turns with uncanny precision. Silence hung within the vehicle, neither driver nor occupant uttering one solitary word. Keith's expression was that of utter disbelief, his eyes constantly looking forward to the road ahead as his mind played out differentiating scenarios of horrifying possibilities. His heart beating madly in his chest, adrenaline rushing through his veins; unable to clear his head. Amy was another matter entirely; her fear giving her unflinching concentration as she drove forth to the local hospital near the hotel. She drove like a mad gal, but Keith trusted her judgment with his life. Lights gleamed off the exterior from oncoming traffic, shadows dancing around hectically. Amy squinted to make out the path ahead, hating how terribly the bright lights affected her vision at night. The dragon moved not a muscle, sitting completely immobile as he contemplated various things of differing importance. It had been a while since he had seen his sister, though they kept in touch online quite frequently. The last time he visited he was unable to see her, due to the dragoness being away on her own little trip somewhere in Europe. The news of her being at the hospital had shaken him badly, never expecting to hear that his own sister had been stabbed. His demeanor quickly went from manically worried to silently brooding half an hour after Amy explained all that Diana had told her. Amy had seen how the dragon reacted to tragic news before, so she let him be until he could regain his emotional composure and approach her on his own. She knew the kind of history the two siblings had, how close they are and how much they love each other. She knew the secret they shared.
Halfway to their destination Keith put on his mini-earphones and plugged them into his Droid phone, opening up his music playlists and accessing his "Metal" folder. He increased the volume and selected a song, closing his eyes and leaning his head back as he let the world wash away around him in a flurry of guitar riffs and death growls. His mind went wild, creating images and scenes based on the noises and tones echoing through his head. What was first a tower stretching above a red sky quickly became a shrine buried under an ancient sea, a massive storm stirring the aged waters. Abstract forms materialized and faded away, colors changing rapidly along the evolving architecture of an impossibly twisted city. Spires rising from the tops of gleaming silver fortresses, their surface bristling with unknown magnitudes of firepower. Worlds were built and torn apart in milliseconds, each with its own unique history and inhabitants. Then everything faded to black. He began thinking back to his childhood, to all the memories.
Keith awoke to Amy nudging his arm rather hard, his eyes shifting around and setting on blurred red lights, coming slowly into focus. He looked around, seeing a full parking lot, immediately knowing where they were.
"How long was I out?" he asked, rubbing his eyes slowly. Amy gave a wide grin, unlocking the doors with the click of a button.
"About twelve minutes I'd say, you are still the only guy I know who can fall asleep to that damn loud screeching." She joked, knowing how to push his buttons just right. The dragon chuckled and unbuckled himself, opening the door and stepping out into the cool night air. He breathed it in heavily, picking up an unpleasant mix of various scents. He hated going anywhere near a medical facility, his keen sense of smell picked up everything around him, even if it was something he desired not to know was around. Amy exited the vehicle and stretched, letting out a cute yip. She turned to her dragon and giggled as she saw his expression of complete revulsion, walking over and wrapping her arms around him. He purred and held her close, content just to hug someone in that moment.
"Hey now, she's going to be okay. Just a little blood loss and shock." she whispered in his ear, letting go and taking his hand in her own. He held onto it, rubbing his thumb against her palm as they laced their fingers together. They parted hesitantly and walked towards the entrance side-by-side. On their way in Keith noticed a few police cars parked in a group, no question in his mind as to why they were there.
It did not take too long before they were both walking down the hallway of the third floor, each step feeling more weighted than the last. The dragon's teeth were clattering together, a testament to his nervousness. This was not how he wanted to greet his sister after so long. The Doberman was fairing only slightly better, the only sign of her anxiousness being the occasional twitch of her fingers and hands. There were a few patients and medical personnel wandering the hallway, talking and going about their own business. The path was thankfully not crowded, the pair only having to sidestep or shift around a small number of times. Room 353 was the target, about halfway across the length of the current floor right after the Outpatient Procedure Unit room. They received their visitor's passes easily enough after a small wait in line. Keith had a chance to tell his parents what transpired; getting a few odd looks from strangers as his mother's loud yelling could be heard. Amy had to push him outside where he could continue the conversation without disturbing anyone. He remembered the look on her face when he came back inside several minutes later, a wide, toothy grin. Amy was no stranger to how out of hand his mother's emotions could become. Her bipolar disorder made her a real treat to be around when her attitude quickly went south, so she could not help but find it oddly amusing in some situations. She had to find some form of humor to lighten the mood, it was her nature to look past anything that would bring her down. She did it before, and she'd do it again to help Keith and Diana through this little dilemma.
There were a few police officers standing in front of the door to Diana's room, most likely waiting for the one inside to finish questioning her. Keith gave them a sharp look, bordering on aggressive, as he approached. He needed to be in there, not them. One stepped forward, a coyote with ruffled fur, his gaze taking in the details of the dragon.
"Are you the brother?" he asked, taking out a little notepad and pen.
"I am. Keith Brisinver, I'm here to see my sister." He responded, his annoyance obvious to even the casual viewer. As if sensing the dragon's anxiousness he nodded and turned to Amy, penning down the first name.
"And you miss?" the officer inquired. His partner, a dark skinned human, raised an eyebrow as he looked her over.
"I'm Amelia Kantris, Keith is my partner." She said straight-faced, not the least bit interested in the one eyeing her over. He took the hint and looked away, not wanting to contend with the well-built dragon.
"Okay then, a couple things you should both know before going in there. One: She is still very much in shock, so her memory about the incident may be a little shady for now. Two: She is sedated and on heavy painkillers, so expect her to be a little woozy or unresponsive. We have someone in there asking her all he can about the culprit, general description, location, and such." Keith's eyes widened a bit.
"Location? You don't know where you picked her up from?" he asked, his impatience peaking. The coyote shook his head.
"We did not pick her up from anywhere; she walked here after being stabbed. She had no vehicle at the time as she was on a stroll, according to her. I thought it very odd that she did not call 911, but then again shock can affect your ability to properly make decisions." The dragon rolled his eyes and Amy sighed heavily. His sister had a very bad habit of walking around the city at night by herself. She claimed it was thrilling, and always carried some pepper spray on her whenever she went out, but it was still extremely dangerous. She was immensely attractive, turning heads wherever she went. She already had a few encounters that luckily did not take a turn for the worse, but she pushed her luck a little more each time. The dragon snarled and nodded, clenching and unclenching his fists in anger. Amy walked up behind him and put her hand on his shoulder, causing him to take in a deep breath. He leaned against the wall to the right of the door, pulling the female against him. Both of the officers looked at each other for a moment before the human spoke.
"It will be just a minute or two before you can go in there, its best not to have the room crowded for her sake. We want to keep her heart rate stable until she recovers from that blood loss. At least that's what the doctor told us." Keith smiled as best he could, the facial expression coming across as more of a semi-angry grin. His mind was restless, anxious, and filled with rage for the one who hurt his beloved sister. He clenched his left fist harder than usual, his claws tips digging into the soft scales, drawing a small trickle of blood. Amy did not like the violent shift she was witnessing in her male; it was disconcerting to say the least.
"Guys can you please give us a moment to properly compose ourselves before we go in?" she asked, taking the dragon's hand and leading him to a secluded area under the archway of a double-door entrance. She frowned and lifted his left hand, licking the bloodied claw marks clean. Keith relaxed his posture, swaying his tail idly and giving a pathetic whimper. The sound caught his partner off guard, the canine perking her ears and tilting her snout. She had not seen him this upset in a long time. She brushed her fingers along the side of his snout, causing him to rumble. She scratched the area softly with her claw tips, Keith leaning forward a bit and shivering. She always fancied scratching his snout whenever he needed cheering up; it seemed to put him in a trance-like state. After a few more moments she removed her hand and pressed closer to him, nuzzling his neck. The male wrapped his arms around her, leaning back against the cold wall behind him. They held each other tightly, silently preparing themselves in the comfort of each other's grasp. He stared off, not focused on any particular object or person. Just thinking about how much he loved her, how much it meant to him in this moment in time just to have her. He thought of his most painful moments in life, how easy it was to get through them with Amy by his side. He really could not imagine her disappearing from his life; he would not even dare to imagine it. She and his sister made him whole, he only needed them. His heart belonged to those two ladies, entrusted to the two he loved most in his life. He knew his trust was not misplaced.
Keith placed his hand on the door, finding himself unable to muster any strength to even nudge it open. His heart sank, too afraid to do more than stare. This door, this man-made construction, was one of the greatest obstacles he had ever come across. He kept his hand on the smooth metal handle, his digits trembling as he searched for any strength at all to use. He was dumbstruck by how crippled he now was, not even able to signal his arm to pull back. He bit his lip, growing incredibly frustrated with himself. How could he be strong for his sister if he couldn't even get to her? Amy caught wind of his anger, quickly placing her hand over his and gripping the handle in tandem. All of the uncertainty, fear, and hesitation washed away from him. He gulped hard, pulling back just as the canine did. Cool air and the steady hum of an AC unit greeted both of them, a tell-tale sign of the dragoness's presence inside. Her obsessive need to always have a fan or two blowing on her while she rested now soothed her brother's mind a significant amount. At least she had recovered enough to indulge in her annoying habit, and this was more than enough to bring the both of them to the verge of tears. Keith took a few more steps and halted, staring at the bed in which his sister lay. Her eyes were closed, her chest moving slowly up and down, and her tail coiled loosely around the bed railing. If it were not for the current circumstances then he would have labeled her as adorable, but now she seemed more vulnerable than anything else. He began to tremble as he studied her, wanting nothing more than to pull her close protectively, like an older brother should. Amy observed quietly in conjunction, afraid to break the silence. She couldn't believe how fragile Diana looked in that bed, almost as if she was comatose. The couple took a seat next to the bed, contemplating their next action. Keith had not taken his eyes off of her once he entered the room, not willing to grasp the fact that she was really injured. With all the energy he could muster, he placed his hand atop her own. There was nary a response for a few moments before she moved her fingers, eyes slowly opening. The hearts of the two visitors froze as they watched her stare directly at them. Diana gripped Keith's paw, clutching it as tight as she could. Tears ran down the dragon's cheeks, mouth agape from the shock. Both of the dragons held each other's gaze for what seemed like hours, but what in fact were only a few minutes. The dragoness shifted her gaze to Amy and spoke.
"Not going to get in on this awkward action dear?" she teased, giving the best grin she could with her limited strength. Amy giggled whilst Keith gave a hearty chuckle, both thrilled to see her crude sense of humor was at full capacity. The canine leaned forward and placed her hand over the other two, feeling the chilled surface of Diana's scales.
"Hun you really need to warm yourself, its freezing in here." Amy said as she expressed concern, although secretly not wanting to freeze her own tail off. Keith simply nodded and Diana rolled her eyes, lifting her head a few inches off of the pillow.
"Oh fine, let me get it." She said as she attempted to move, immediately being countered by a hand to her chest, keeping her down.
"You will do no such thing; let your perfectly healthy brother who has not just been stabbed do that for you." Keith stated as he stood up and walked over to the air conditioner, clicking the nob inward. Diana rolled her eyes and shifted onto her side, groaning from the pain of her wound. Amy looked her over, trying to spot the location of the slice. Diana pointed a claw to the right side of her stomach.
"I know they dressed it very well, was surprised they didn't botch something as usual." The dragoness remarked, snarling after. The dragon and canine both grinned widely, recanting her last little medical mishap.
"Oh Diana dear! How could you have guessed that particular doctor would be too busy staring at your tits to realize that he had injected you with the wrong vaccination?" Keith said, egging his sister on. She growled and nudged his chest with her tail, stretching her arms out to her sides.
"He's fortunate that I didn't sue his balls off. Luckily for him I only got a moderate headache, was enough of an excuse to take the next day off of work and decimate a carton of ice cream", Amy giggled and leaned against her dragon, yawning aloud. Dia smirked and winked in their direction.
"Seems your lady is eager to drag you back into the sack brother dearest", said the dragoness teasingly, knowing just how to push her brother's buttons. Keith poked her leg and frowned, eyeing the area of her injury.
"I want to see how bad it is", He stated, curious as to the severity of the internal damage. Dia gave a low whimper in response, gesturing for him to inspect her abdominal region. Amy stood up and moved to the dragoness's left side, resting a hand on her shoulder comfortingly. The dragon moved closer to his sister, rubbing both hands on her covered belly soothingly as he tried to help her relax. She took to the attention and laid her head back fully, closing her eyes. He undid a few of the buttons on her hospital robe, enough to attain a clear view of the smooth purple scales underneath. He spread the fabric further, opening up the entire clothed spot on her belly. The wound was dressed quite adequately with layered bandaging, underneath that were a few disinfectants and coagulants to ensure proper clotting and avoidance of infection. He gave it a gentle poke with a claw, noting how she twitched. He wanted to see the cut for himself, but he decided that removing the dressing would be for the worst.
"Okay, now that I have that out of the way could you please tell me what motherfucker stabbed you in the goddamned side?" he snarled angrily, his heart pumping fast as the full effect of the situation finally collided into him. He clenched his fists and looked away from her, his tail flicking sharply from side to side. Diana looked away as well, her gaze seemingly transfixed on the bed sheets. Amy took the silence as an opportunity to stand up and walk over to the nearby window on the far left side of the room. She stared out onto the lively city, lights travelling to and from various locations. Florida was rarely dead at night.
"He is someone whom you have dealt with before. In fact Amy knows him quite well herself", said Dia as she lifted her head up, glancing over to Amy before meeting Keith's gaze. She could see the rage in his eyes; she could see their father's anger. The male blinked several times in confusion before he widened his eyes in unwanted realization.
"No fucking way", he said quietly. His tail had stopped moving but his heart beat remained as furious as ever. Amy placed her hand against the glass, feeling the coldness of the pane as the outside air pushed against it. It was going to be a long, sleepless night.
