#2 of A Space Opera

Today was Sunday so Konstantin knew Vladimir didn't work today, he showed up at his apartment around 9:00. Early considering the shower had lasted into the early hours of the morning, and he knew that Vlad liked to sleep in whenever he could so he should still be asleep. All the better, he planned on getting some answers. He rang the electronic doorbell three times and waited for Vlad to open the door.

Two minutes later and there was still no answer, he rang again. He couldn't hear anyone or anything on the inside.

Konstantin was starting to get worried, Vlad was almost always home, usually reading those damn books of his. He knew they were illegal, yet he still bought them. It was the only vice Vlad let himself enjoy. He banged on the door five times, waited for forty seconds, and decided to enter anyway. Taking out his hand held computing device he hooked it directly into the apartment's computer, over-ridded the locking protocol and drifted aside as the door slid open. Quashing his guilt at breaking into his friends' home he stepped in and the door closed behind him. As the lights flickered on Konstantin held back a sigh. He would never understand how Vladimir lived like this, a sparse, cramped four room apartment. A bedroom that had a single size mattress, a night table and reading light and a diminutive dresser, a living room with two chairs and a small coffee table with a over filled bookshelf in the corner. Even the kitchen only had a stove and oven, a small island and a tiny square table with seating for two. Vlad wasn't home, and that bugged Konstantin. The last time something like this happened, Vladimir ended up in the med clinic with a dislocated shoulder, a broken nose and a few fractured ribs, not to mention more bruises than you could count. All because some oligarch bitch had a problem with him and enough sway to get some mentally slow grunts on him. Oh yes Konstantin was angry, but more so he was worried. If some muscle bound bastard with some badge laid a paw on Volodya he'd fucken kill them. If there was one thing that could be said of Konstantin it was that he was fiercely loyal to his friends.

Vladimir squinted against the light in his eyes, groaning at the pounding in his head. He had slept in the arboretum, using his species natural affinity to sleeping in trees to make sure he didn't float off in the lack of gravity. His clawed feet gripping a branch on the tree, the now empty bottle of vodka clutched in his hands, he brought a hand up to shield his eyes from the glare. Figuring he might as well get up he allowed some time for his eyes to adjust. Flapping his way to the handrail system he threw the empty bottle into a vacuum powered recycle bin. On a space station/colony like the Leon, nearly everything was recycled. Cut down on resource expenses. Vlad hoped Kostya wasn't worried about him, after all he did say he was going to head over for that talk, and while Vladimir didn't want to worry his friend, he wasn't about to go spill anything to him for three important reasons. One Konstantin would hardly understand, and two, if, and Vlad seriously doubted it but if, Konstantin told the Party about this it would mean another beat down. A prospect he had no intentions of repeating. And finally, since Konstantin was getting married, there was no point in bringing up his feelings, he'd repress any jealousy or bitterness and be happy for his friend. The least he would do though is send his friend a message letting him know he was alright. To that end Vladimir walked up to a public access module and sent a video message to Kostya. A few minutes later with that done Vlad needed to do something about this hangover, a bit of the hair of the wolf that bit him seemed appropriate at that moment. He let out a sarcastic chuckle at the pathetic wit he was able to conjure hung over.

Konstantin was looking through Vlad's book collection, waiting for him to come home. He was amazed by the sheer amount of illegal literature the bat had collected over the years. Much of it originally older than a hundred years old. Should anyone think to investigate Vlad, he would be facing life minimum for the sheer amount of paraphernalia in his possession. He was really starting to worry now. The sound of his portable computer made him jump in his skin. Quietly cursing himself he fumbled with it, opening his mailbox. He breathed an audible sigh of relief when he saw that it was from Vladimir. He hit play and a the small screen cackled to life, showing a tired but unharmed Vlad on the other side.

"Hello Konstantin, sorry I wasn't home this morning. I know you wanted some answers, but trust me, they're not going to help. I really am glad for you! Anyway, when is the wedding scheduled for? Get back to me with that. Thanks, take care."

Konstantin would have been furious if he hadn't been so relieved. He still didn't believe Vlad entirely, he seemed sincere enough but there was just a little something that threw it off, it seemed forced, anyway he had spent enough time as an uninvited guest. Besides he had to go meet Tanya for lunch and he was going to be late.

Vladimir sat at the bar in a dark dingy pub. Sitting down in the artificial gravity the business enjoyed he stared into his third beer, his headache receded. Vladimir didn't really know what to do. Well that was a lie; he was going to be Kostya's best man. But after that, he really didn't have a clue. It was clear the party only tolerated him because of his dedication to his work, and they weren't above hurting him because of who he was. He guessed that's why he never told Konstantin, if he actually felt the same way, which as it had become apparent he didn't, they might rough him up to. And that was something he would not stand for. Vlad figured he might leave the station after the ceremony, it wasn't unheard of. The trick was not getting caught, but Vladimir had some friends in the smuggling business, they might be able to help. Vlad took a deep draught and resolved that he was leaving the station the first chance he got.

Tanya stretched languidly in her seat; the meal had been especially fine. She made a mental note to thank the general for recommending the trattoria. She thought it strange that they would use an Italian word but brushed the thought aside. She was just happy to be with Konstantin.

"By the way, did you let Vladimir know where having the wedding in a few days?"

Konstantin looked to her. "No, he wasn't home, but I left a message for him letting him know."

"Oh." She sounded dissapointed

Once the dessert had arrived, the conversation moved on to lighter topics, mostly wedding planning. Tanya was an orphan, raised by the state, the closest man she had to a father was the General. Thankfully he had agreed to give her away, but only as he said because he liked Konstantin.

Konstantin grabbed her by the wrist and spun her close to him in an embrace. "Seeing as I have the day off, why don't we head back to your place?" He whispered to her. Tanya giggled and led the way.

Vladimir was drunk again, and frankly, to use an old Earth expression, he didn't give a fuck. He didn't plan on showing up to work tomorrow, or any time soon. And if Petrakova gave him a problem he would tell her to piss off. He was feeling very angry. Angry at himself for hiding his feeling from Konstantin, angry at Petrakova for selling him out because he found another man appealing, but most of all, angry at the party for beating him, all for what, nothing! He was about to leave when he heard a familiar voice order a drink from a far corner and suddenly he had forgotten about his anger. Turning to face the crowded table he called out to them. "You wouldn't be fool enough to be on the Leon station would you Neil?" He called out jokingly.

"Well if it isn't Vladimir Karakov! What are you doing way down there you sonnova bitch, come here and join us for a drink" replied the other in warm welcome.

"I think I will." Vlad answered as he hopped from the stool with just a hint of unsteadiness and walked over to them in a relatively straight line. Falling into an empty chair he glanced at Neil, not much had changes in the three years it was since he last say the cat. Still the same black fur and grayish hair, combed just so, still the same vibrantly green eyes, and still the lean swimmers body. "So what brings you back to the Leon station Neil? I seem to recall you being shot at while escaping after being arrested for conspiracy, possession and grand larceny."Vlad whispered.

"Well I wouldn't be if it weren't for my ship needing repairs, the crew needing shore leave, and the chance to do some business. Besides all that was under a different captain, and on a different ship." Neil smirked "I've got my own ship now and my own crew. We're a merchant vessel now."

Vlad had to hold back a smile; it had been to long since he had seen the cat. He hadn't realized it but he had dearly missed him. "What's this business about needing repairs? Are things getting troubled out there?"

Neil nearly choked on his ale. One of his crew - A bear - had to pound him on the back before he could even speak. "Y-you mean (Cough- cough)" He stuttered before taking a breath and steadying himself. "That you haven't heard."

"The most I've heard is the Wrath of Gaia extremists have been raiding stations, the party's already increased the military budget; I didn't think it was anything to worry about." Vlad explained.

"Oh for fucks sake, we need to talk, but not here, we don't need anyone else hearing this and starting a panic. Follow us." Neil and the others rose, took care of the bill (including Vladimir's) and led him out, leaving him squinting in the artificial light.

Konstantin had his shirt off by the time Tanya's door closed, his pants off by the time they reached her bedroom. She turned him around and playfully pushed him to a sitting position on the bed. His cock had yet to clear his sheath, but she could see it start to swell under his drawers. Stepping back, she started to dance around in little circles as she stripped for her lover. She started with her shirt, taking it off slowly and giving Konstantin a show he wouldn't soon forget. Next she unbuttoned her pants, letting them fall to her ankles and taking a large step of them she broke into a split as she unhooked her bra. Now on paws and knees she crawled to where he sat, pulling down his boxers exposing the tip of his red shaft. Giving him a knowing wink she placed her mouth to his swelling sheath and shoved her rough tongue down into it, giving his swiftly growing phallus the attention it seeked before it ever left it's covering. Konstantin couldn't help but shudder and groan in pleasure. Leaving his cock to leave its casing she started to lap at his testicles, playing with his rod with her hand. As soon as he had grown rock hard, she went back to his meat, licking and sucking on it. Konstantin could take it no longer, falling back onto the bed, lying with his knees dangling over the edge as his love pleased him orally. He started to pant and moan as he raised his head to watch hers bob up and down on his dick. His know quickly growing Tanya started to go faster and deeper, hilting Konstantin in her before he became fully extended. Easier said than done, without his sheath fully inflated he had a length of nearly eight inches. She had to suppress a gag as his pubic fur tickled her nose making it worse. She wouldn't have to wait much longer though, by the way his tail was twitching, how hard he was panting and groaning, and by how his tongue was hanging from the side of his mouth. A few more strokes and he would blow, and she was only too happy to oblige him. She gave a few more bobs of her head, sucking as hard as she could. Konstantin was about to cum, and as animal instinct took over he grabbed Tanya by the hair, forcing his meat all the dawn into her mouth hitting the back of her throat. He let out a primal howl as he began to pump into her mouth and blast out load after load. His lover drinking it down like an addict, like a drunkard slammed back vodka, she was only too happy to please her Kostya.

Konstantin was spent, he fell back again panting, his heart racing. Tanya crawled up beside him and kissed him passionately, the salty aftertaste of his seed in her mouth made Konstantin but he did not pull away. Rolling upon her he straddled her hips with his, breaking their kiss he nipped at her neck, rolling her breasts and squeezing her nipples with his hand. Her shimmied down her, trailing kisses and nipping at especially sensitive parts till he was down to her crotch. Sliding her wet panties off of her, he grinned wolfishly at her and began to lap up her vaginal juices, this time making her moan. And as he began to explore her insides with his tongue it was her turn to shudder.

Vladimir kept any questions or reservations he had to himself as he followed the ragtag group. He knew the station like the back of his hand, so it wasn't hard to figure out they were going to the docks. They drew a few looks, and more than once they were stopped by enforcers who demanded their identification, each time Neil showed them the appropriate documents and they were left to continue on their way. Despite the repeated interruptions they made it to the docks in relative haste.

"Introductions can wait till later, right now the crew needs to start unloading some goods," Neil said as he turned to the bear that had beat his back at the pub when he was choking. "Can you handle it Braun?"

"Aye sir shouldn't take more than a few hours" came the curt reply.

"Good, I think I need to talk to Mr. Karakov about some things, Vlad, if you'd follow me."

As Vlad headed up with Neil onto the deck, he noticed the ships name "Little Dreamer, eh. Whatever happened to the Morning Star?" He couldn't help but ask.

".... Pirates got both her and Cap'n Ferran."

"I'm sorry to hear that, she was a good ship." Vlad apologized, he felt guilty for bringing up what could have been a painful memory. Neil seemed to ignore him as he opened the door to his cabin. Dim lights flickered on as they entered the sparse room. There was a double size bed, an old fashioned wooden desk with matching chairs, and on the far wall a personal computer from where the captain could access the entire vessel.

"Vlad, I'm not going to sugar coat it for you, the galaxy has gone to shit. And pretty much every one that's been inhabited." Neil started, leaning against a wall. "The Wrath of Gaia are just a small part of it. Did you know they've started to colonize planets again?"

"What, no! When did this start" Vlad was startled. Planets hadn't been colonized for hundreds of years, not since the Pandora Crises. Back in the early days of space colonization, any planet deemed suitable for supporting life was immediately bombarded by pilgrims looking for fortune or a new life. With no immunity to local bacteria and viruses it wasn't long before they were dropping like flies.

"A few years ago, some so called prophet from a backwater station claimed that the Pandora crisis was a curse that old Terra had placed upon us for killing it. He actually believed the planets were sentient beings. At first no one paid any attention to him, but he had a few followers whom he had colonize a nearby planet. And no died, not a one. He started to get more attention, and then he started to go to other stations. Eventually he just started doing things violently and by then he had enough followers to build an army." Neil sighed "He's been annexing stations left, right, and centre."

"So" Vladimir began to venture. "The Wrath of Gaia, are his personal army?"

"Yes, but there not the biggest problem, people have been revolting, overthrowing governments to let this so called prophet in. And the stations are ignoring it; they refuse to even discuss it. You said it yourself; all they did was buy some new equipment for their military." Neil sighed. "And those that don't openly welcome, he enslaves, or kills, or worse."

"And where do you fit into this?" Vlad couldn't help but ask.

"I and the crew work for a small resistance force, we do what we can which isn't much, but we're growing. I wasn't lying when I said we needed repairs, but we're also here to try and save as many people as we can. We plan to leave soon and take as many people that'll listen to us."

"The party won't allow let anyone to leave, the best you can hope for are a few that want to leave."

Neil pushed himself from the wall, walking over to the bat. "What about you Vlad, your party never cared about you. Every time we've ever met I've asked you why you stay, and it's always the same answer, you had to stay for someone. You ever tell the wolf how you felt?" Neil was the only person Vlad had ever told, and to his happiness, Neil understood. Still understood it seemed, Vlad, not for the first time realized how much he had missed his feline friend.

"Not quite" Vladimir answered.

"What happened?" the black cat asked.

Vlad laughed a little nervously "He's getting married. And I'd like to be there to wish him well."

"When's the marriage?"

"Let me check" Vladimir said as he fumbled for his computer, apparently he was more drunk than he thought. "Two days."

Neil stepped over to the desk and pulled a glass bottle from it, he motioned for the Bat to take a seat at the table. Taking the seat opposite of Vlad he produced two shot glasses. "Then let's celebrate for your friend.

The bottle turned out to be a high proof brandy and more than a few shots later Vladimir and Neil where both completely shit-faced drunk.

"What are you going to do after the wedding?" Neil asked suddenly, catching Vladimir off guard.

"I'm not sure. I -" Neil cut him off.

"Don't tell me you're going to stay, he's getting married. I can't understand you Vlad, there are places you can go and be accepted for who you are, where you don't get beaten over your sexual preference. How can you live here after being treated like you have?" Neil sounded sad. "What do you owe them that you stay through the abuse? Please Volodya, please, come with us. This is the last time I'll be able to ask you."

The last thing Vladimir wanted was Neil's pity. How could the cat just expect him to up and leave everything he's worked towards, all these people to fight off an invasion without him?

"I don't know what I'm going to do Neil. I can't just leave everyone here to die."

"WHY NOT! What have they ever done for you? Nothing, nothing but mock you and hurt you and make you feel like an outcast." Neil was starting to get angry, and it was showing.

"What do you care anyway Neil, it's obvious you don't care about them so why are you here, what is it to you what's been done." Vlad retorted, lending added venom to his words.

"IDIOT!! I CAME HERE FOR YOU! I CARE BECAUSE I LOVE YOU!" That had caught Vlad off guard. The thought that anyone cared for him hadn't crossed his mind in a long time. He had gotten so used to thinking of himself as a lone freak, he had forced it from his mind. And now because of him Neil lay with his head in his hands, trying to hide his tears as he shook uncontrollably.

Vlad quietly got up and lightly stepped over to Neil. He didn't speak; he just grabbed the felines paw in his, wiped his tears away with his thumb, and ever so gently kissed Neil and grabbed him in an embrace. Neil turned into the embrace, wrapping his own arms around the man he had secretly loved for so long, holding his feelings back to give Vladimir his own chance at happiness. He buried his head against the taller bats shoulder and choked back his tears, and as he held Vladimir close he felt the bat shift he feared he was going to break the contact. He tensed waiting for Vlad to slip away; instead he felt the bats wings enfold him, hugging him closer. Only then did Vladimir trust himself to speak.

"I'm so sorry Neil, I never knew and I'm sorry, so sorry." Neil took a small step back and looked into Vladimir's eyes, blinking back their own tears. Neil leaned close and put his lips to Vlad's in a tender if uncertain kiss, and his heart could not help but flutter as he was kissed back.

"It's alright, just don't let it happen again." Neil joked, trying to lighten the situation. Vlad let out a half laugh, half sob and just held the cat all the tighter.
