Iron Dragon Chapter 188
#95 of Iron Dragon
After a rather long interruption, the next chapter of the iron Dragon.
Jenny grumbled as she sat up in bed, Alice had already left it seems and she heard Harley talking to someone in the living room. Her collar told her Nodrog was close by, so Harley was more than likely talking to him. She got up and quickly washed her face and put on deodorant before getting dressed.
Nodrog was out sitting on the couch with Harley, watching cartoons. "Morning."
Jenny yawned. "Mornin. Has she eaten yet?"
"Of course. Alice got her up and ready this morning." Nodrog turned to look back at Jenny.
"Do you know where she ran off too?" Jenny asked.
"Well it is Saturday and she just got two more toys..." Nodrog chuckled as Jenny gave it a little thought.
"I suppose that was a silly question. So what are you doing today?" Jenny asked as she made breakfast.
"Haven't given it much thought. Roslyn and Stacy are flying Marko out for a couple meetings." Nodrog said.
"Want to play some pool?" Jenny asked.
"We could do that. After all I haven't beat you at it yet." Nodrog said with a naughty little smile.
Jenny gave him a dirty look. "I am ten times better than Sherman."
"I think you are more than ten times better. He still can't make called shots." Nodrog chuckled and Harley laughed with him.
Carrel and Jim joined them down in the lounge. Mainly because it was the only thing to do with the weather being poor. No snow, but the wind was blowing hard and cold. Plus Carrel could watch Harley when it was Jenny's turn to actually play.
"If I didn't know any better, I would think you have been playing for a long time." Jim said as Nodrog nearly cleared the solids off the table his first turn.
Nodrog chuckled as Jim set about clearing the stripes. "I have been blessed with talented instructors."
"He is a pretty good teacher, and fix it man." Jenny said from her chair trying to keep Harley from making a mess with the salt and pepper shakers.
"Have you ever taught?" Carrel asked.
"Aside from combat, no. The piano playing was mainly for something to pass the down time. Only one person ever asked me about it, and her parents put a stop to that before I could give it any thought." Nodrog said and now that Jim had moved his stripes out of the way Nodrog could make his last few shots.
Nodrog beat Jim this game, barely. He could have cheated and used a little magic to nudge the eight ball in, but that would defeat the purpose of playing Jim and Jenny in the first place. Actually he cheated in Sherman's favor a few times so Sherman would continue to play with him. Sherman wouldn't want to play if he lost every game.
Jenny danced to a tune in her head as she screwed the two halves of her que together while Nodrog racked the balls. Since the lounge was rather crowded and Harley was present Jenny refrained from making lewd jokes with the que. Though her little dance drew several people's eyes to her ass, distracting them from their own games or activities.
"Ladies first." Nodrog said as he hung up the rack.
Jenny leaned down for her shot and smiled. The weather might be lousy, but at least she wasn't stuck in the apartment. A solid crack sent balls in every direction sinking two solids and one stripe. "Well solids it is."
Sherman saw Nodrog first, but Jenny's hot little ass held his attention as she remained bent over to make another shot as he walked up to them. "So this is where you are hiding."
"I didn't know I was hiding." Nodrog replied.
Sherman paused for a moment to order a drink before he walked over to them. "Did you lose your phone, Winston has been trying to get a hold of you."
Nodrog checked his shirt pocket. "Must have left it in our apartment. Did he say what he needed?"
"Just that he needed to check with you about some dates. You can use my phone to call him back if you want." Sherman pulled out his cell phone.
"Thanks." Nodrog called Winston back while Jenny continued to knock solids into the pockets. Jenny continued to do her little dance as she moved around the table.
"Hey Sherman did you find him?" Winston asked.
"You could say he found me." Nodrog chuckled.
"Oh, hey. I know you are out of town with Alice in December, but I need to know when you will be back." Winston said as he snagged a pen and paper.
"We will be gone the week before Christmas. Actually we should be back three days before hand." Nodrog said and after a pause added. "I must have left my phone in my apartment, sorry about that."
Winston scribbled down some dates after thumbing to December in a calendar. "It's cool, everyone forgets their phone someplace at least once."
"Do you have a gig lined up?" Nodrog asked.
"Actually two, one is early in the month and the other is the day before Christmas." Winston said and flipped to his other notes. "We have been asked to play for the big corporate charity gala... I think you mentioned you attended it last year with Marko."
"I did, I will let him know I will be there with you." Nodrog said and chuckled as Jenny made a rude gesture at the eight ball when it failed to fall in a pocket.
"That's awesome, I gota tell you, I really enjoy playing with you. Plus you make these big events a little less intimidating." Winston spoke as he wrote down more notes and motioned for Brian to come over.
"Trust me, the feeling is mutual. Now if you excuse me, I need to beat a kitten at a game of billiards." Nodrog said with a smile.
"Well have fun with that." Winston said and hung up so he could talk to Brian.
Down at the shop Alice was sitting where the engine would be if it was installed. The cars Alice did not really get heavily involved with during their construction. Due to the punishment the trucks would face and the fact Alice might need to make a repair miles from a pit stop or from anything, she needed to know them more intimately.
Currently she was getting holes drilled to mount weather proof electrical connectors to the firewall. She had spent most of the morning holding things in place so TJ could make some tack welds. TJ was finish welding up mounts and brackets to the tube frame. Alice was helping DJ and Little Joe run the electrical and plumbing fluid lines.
Like the Vipers, the trucks had air jacks. However just two, one mounted on each side right behind the seats. They ran off of a liquid CO2 tank, which developed air pressure from the liquid boiling off. The tank also supplied air pressure to run impact guns so they could change out a flat tire or re inflate a tire after they plugged the hole. Because the chase trucks might not always be able to reach them. The trucks would have to take anything the race course or other drivers threw at them.
Alice blushed as Natasha made a comment about her ass and tight pants in French. "Hope I didn't interrupt any of your plans for today?"
Natasha made a dismissive gesture. "No, no plans for today. Though I thought Wes was lying when he said you got a pair of trucks."
Alice smiled as Natasha leaned against the fender. "You should know me well enough now, that you would know I like expensive toys."
"You are a bit of an adrenaline junky. So what did you need to talk to me about?" Natasha asked while Alice worked.
"Rumor has it that the Yovar will host the fourth off world race and that they prefer point to point format. Most of their world is vast stretches of rugged and arid terrain. So it will be like the Paris to Dakar races of old."
"That was a difficult race from what I know. So the trucks are for it?" Natasha said and handed Alice a connector.
"I love my Lotus too much to subject it to that kind of abuse. Plus I have proven I can win on road, now I am going to race off road. However that leads me to a problem I hope you can help me with." Alice spoke as she bolted the second connector to the firewall.
"Anything for you." Natasha said with a sultry smile.
"Since the off world races are for ladies only, Kenny cannot navigate for me. He is also too busy with other work to navigate for me this off road season. Not all of the events need one, but there are half a dozen. I need someone who knows what they are doing and is female..." Alice looked over at Natasha. "I don't suppose I can sweat talk you into navigating for me this upcoming year?"
Natasha laughed. "No sweat talk needed, just tell me when we need to go."
"I figured you would be up for it." Alice said as Katie and Joe walked over.
"All done?" Katie asked.
"I am." Alice said and leaned down to look under the truck. "Are you done?"
TJ flipped up her welding helmet. "All done down here."
"All done topside." DJ said from the back end of the truck.
"Good, now take it all apart so we can get it shipped." Katie said as they took parts off of the truck.
"Shipped where?" Natasha asked.
"The chassis is going for powder coating and some of the aluminum suspension components are going to be anodized." Katie said over the racket of power tools.
"I thought you could anodize things here?" Alice asked after removing everything she had bolted in.
"I can only do small stuff. The lower A arms and rear lower links are too big for my equipment." Katie said with a smile.
"So when do I get to see the design?" Alice asked as she climbed out of the engine compartment.
Katie laughed. "When it is bolted back together."
"Not even a hint?" Alice teased.
"Nope, you said go nuts and that's what I am going to do." Katie said as the others now stripped the truck to its frame and piling parts up out of the way.
Alice had given Katie free creative license with the trucks, which was a little hard for Alice. Katie knew what Alice liked, she was just going to go a little further with the trucks. The Vipers were sleek and seductive, elegant you could say. Katie had pushed a little with the black stripe and other black accents with the Vipers, kind of testing the waters so to speak. The trucks however would never be sexy, so Katie was going the other way and shooting for mean and nasty.
The body panels were angular along with the tube frame, leaving a great deal of the tubing exposed. Even the suspension components were visible with the body panels in place. If the sleek Vipers were menacing in the mirrors of the other drivers, the trucks would be even more so. Katie had looked over other trucks and had a little more freedom since Alice ran with no sponsors or number. The trucks just might be one of the most standout vehicles Katie has done.
Katie smiled as Alice helped tear the truck apart. The little mouse and the shop had come so far in the last five years. Her paint supplier now sold a special candy red called 'Alice Red'. While she would like Joe to be with her off world for his technical support, she doubted it would ever get old even if Alice doesn't win.
Katie ordered sandwiches from a place across the street for a late lunch. It was so nice to have money to burn on equipment and give all of their employees a pay raise. Business was better than great and it looked like it would stay that way. As they sat around eating and talking, Katie wondered how far Alice would go. Anything after the trucks would likely be two wheels, and Katie knew Alice could ride motorcycles. Katie also knew Alice had taken first on several occasions with a snow machine. Whatever the lead footed mouse decided, Katie would always make sure to have her preferred shade of candy red paint on hand.
Most people had shifted focus to the race on the Velopian world which was only two months away. The Vipers sat silently in their den waiting for the trip to another world. A world Katie had been told was much like the one she lived on. The discussion also included what everyone was doing for the fast approaching holidays. This year the shop would be closed Thursday thru Sunday for thanksgiving. Half the people that worked at the shop had a long way to travel to see family and they were now in a position they could be closed.
The first truck was quickly dismantled after lunch and the tube frame loaded on a trailer for its trip to the powder coater Monday. Alice had gone over to the part of the shop the race cars lived. A pair of Austins and a pair of Vipers sat quietly in dim light, silently begging Alice to drive them. To chase after the best driver Alice could find or terrorize a group of arrogant kids. Alice bit her lip because she wanted to raise a little ruckus, the streets were in no shape for either race car. Even the Lotus, with its all wheel drive would have trouble on the packed snow and ice.
So like the cars, Alice had to sit idle for the time being. Idle, was not something Alice was good at. She had to be doing something, Alice had to be active somehow. That's why she was down at the shop getting her hands dirty. She had explored and seen a great deal of the world both the old and the new. Alice had been to three different worlds and did not want to slow down. The fame had not gotten to her, but the thrill of the next challenge held her tightly.
Alice stood silently in the race cars' lair, the trucks would be joining the Vipers shortly. The ultimate track car and the pinnacle of off road technology, mechanical extensions of her body. Elegant and yet savage, a stark contrast to the petite young lady who drove them. They were the physical manifestation of Alice's soul, because deep inside her, Alice was elegant and savage. The only thing that brought it out of her besides the cars and trucks, was the sentient plant Alice ate on the Salak world.
Her own tail flicked playfully as she thought not of her accomplishments, but of all the people she has met and the places she has been, because of her unquenchable thirst for competition. A never faltering desire to constantly push herself and test herself against the best of the best. Though Marko was sad she would not return to field work, he believed her when she confessed it was what her heart truly longed for. The rush of speed and the smell of racing fuel was just too strong to ignore anymore. Granted, Alice figured everone knew that eventually she would shed the computers and lab coat for the fire suit and horse power.
And so, Alice and her cars impatiently waited, willing the next event to be upon them so they could tear at the ground. Begged to hear the screams of race fans and the roar of race car engines. To savor the taste of competition; the smell hot exhaust fumes and burnt rubber; the whine and chatter of impact guns. But they had to wait, and Alice hated waiting.
