Prologue: The Cry of Legends
Prologue: The Cry of LegendsA young man Walked down Route 2 from Viridian City to Pallet town. It was mid-afternoon, the sun seemingly anchored above the western horizon. He walked alone, not knowing why he didn't bring his Umbreon or Absol with him like he usually does everywhere he goes. With night falling, it was anyone's guess what kind of Pokemon might be lurking around. And you had to watch out for Ghost-Types as well; Arceus knows they love to play nasty tricks on passersby. He shivered at a slight breeze and pulled his jacket tighter around his shoulders. "You should have brought a heavier jacket, young man," a voice said to his left. "I didn't think it'd be this chilly tonight," the young man replied turning to see an elderly man smiling softly. The man wore an all white robe with golden trim and sleeve cuffs around himself and a golden sash draped over his right shoulder. The man looked to be in his mid- to late-seventies, his hair silver and his grey eyes wizened with years of experience. He carried a staff that was gold in color and had an extended crown with two arcs around the crown with three spikes on each arc; the symbol of Arceus. The young man shivered again. "Articuno must be in the area. It's never this cold this time of year." The old man was thoughtful for a moment. "Perhaps. There have been sightings of the Legendary Ice Bird. But nothing's been confirmed." "Which is how it should be," the younger man replied. "Legends shouldn't be hunted just because someone wants them in their collection." The old man looked at the younger for a moment, a thoughtful expression on his face. He stopped walking, causing his companion to stop as well. "Indeed?" He said. "Tell me, would you do this old man a favor?" "Well sure," the younger replied. "Anything for a Cleric of
Arceus." "Step closer young man," The Cleric replied. "Let me look at you." The younger man did so. Then the elderly man put two fingers to the younger's forehead and a faint glow emitted from the Cleric's staff. "You have been called upon by Mother Arceus," the Cleric said as the young man went into a trance-like state. "Head her words." Then all went black.*** The young man floated in in blackness. There was nothing. He could not see anything with the exception of himself. He did, however, hear soft whispers. From where, he could not tell. "Who's there?" He called out. "Who are you?" All he got in reply were whispers. "We are in danger." "We must find the Keeper." "The Keeper will protect us." The young man called out again. "Who are you?" Then he heard a voice, loud and clear, over the rest. "Be at peace, young one," it said. It sounded female. The young man turned trying to figure out where the voice was coming from, but it seemed to be coming from everywhere. "What's going on? Where am I?" "You are within my mind, Human," the voice replied. "I am Arceus." Then a small spot of light appeared in front of him. It grew brighter, and larger as well until it took the shape of a
fairly large Pokemon. The light faded, and, sure enough, before him was the Creator Herself; Arceus. "My children are in danger, Human," Arceus began. "You have been chosen to carry on a legacy that has spanned generations since the beginning of Man's existence." Arceus then bent her head and touched her snout to the man's forehead. "I will grant you a gift, young one. It will help in your quest to protect my children." The point of contact began to glow softly. "This gift will grant you the ability to understand most species of my creation, but only if you form a strong bond with them."The light between his forehead and her snout intensified to an almost blinding glow. The young man gasped as his mind was flooded with Arceus' thoughts and the many different languages of Pokemon."Through this bond that you form with Pokemon you capture and train, they will also be able to understand you more clearly as well." The glow faded until the light was no more and Arceus pulled back. "But be warned young one: Those who learn of this ability may seek to harm you and your partners. Now, awaken, and fulfill your destiny."With that, the whispers resumed and the young man fell back into darkness as Arceus faded from his view. He could make out a few whispers before total silence fell upon him."The Keeper has been named.""We must find the Keeper.""The Keeper will protect us."
