Chapter 1
Team Icarus
"This event shall happen only when the worlds are aligned, like sun and moon on an eclipse, if not the...what is this word!?"
Lucey frowned, observing the ancient paper, runes that only she could decipher forming phrases and words in her own language.
"Lucey..." Her roomate at the academy tried to get her attention; but just after leaving training the brownish cocker spaniel had immediately went for her sacred papers.
"I have no way of knowing what this means, there is no reference in no other pergamen, perhaps I should-!"
"Lucey!" This time Colleen growled, brown optics full of irritation. Flinching at the jack russel's tone the girl in question turned, raising her brow in question. Colleen raised her hand, a carefully tied letter in her hand.
"It's signed from Magnus. Are you in trouble again?"
Lucey shook her head; Magnus was the director of the Accadeny Cacciatoribus of District 12, which she chose exactly two years and four months ago to complete her hunter's studies, and then join a Team. Everyone knew that a letter from the irish setter could either mean horrible or beautiful news. Lucey wasn't really positive for the latter.
So that is the reason she gasped and immediately proceeded to cover her mouth in sirprise when the words "Since your trainings and skills have deemed you worthy..." and then "accepted into" flew confusedly before her green optics.
Collen looked at her with her usual monotone aura, but not even that could ruin her mood. "What does it say?"
Lucey carefully let go of her own mouth, but as she explained the words still came in a fast and excited manner "A team Colleen! I have been assigned to a team! I wonder which one it is...and where it is, I have to write to my parents they will be so proud!-"
She babbled for a while, not even noticing as the other apprentice rolled her eyes and left, so for the second time in a day Lucey jumped as the familiar tune of Magnus reached her ears.
"Should I reconsider my decision? Schizophrenia is not recomandable for a hunter."
Laughing nervously the girl gathered herself, stirring her fingers over the leather cloack and cursing Colleen for always being so silent.
"No sir, I was merely thinking aloud."
Uncomfortable under the scrutiny that the director's brown eyes gave, she straightened her back, earning a chuckle from Magnus.
"Very well, you received my letter I suppose?" he nodded toward the object in question, which was laying open on the floor "I came here to give you the necessarious about your team and departure for District 8..."
"District 8-?" She interrupted, usually apprentices get assigned in a team in the same District as their academy, so this seemed almost surreal to Lucey.
But Magnus continued.
"...tomorrow at 6AM you are to departure for the 'Julius Ceaser's Base' of District 8. You will be assigned to Team Icarus, as former combat member. Here is the information about your teammates, I suppose you do not want to look unprepared."
But she didn't need the paper, she knew Team Icarus. They were well-known among hunters for their dangerous missions and the skills of their members, how come she had been assigned to them? The cocker took the paper from her not-anymore director and opened the folder, surprised at the images of her now teammates.
She had known the names, not the faces.
James and Hela Ferton. Brother and sister from District 2, both twentythree of age and with a bloodied red ledger, their neutral yet deadly expressions told so. But Lucey also noticed their particular beauty, belgian sheperds were rare now, and with their black fur and brown irises these two almost looked identical, if not for Hela's carefully tied back hair.
Jay Macintos. One of the most skilled assassins, from District 6, twenty of age; even with his soft golden retriever features he still managed a menacing look, and his eyes were ice cold.
The next one, Alchemist, was the one who captured her attention the most. There was no information neither about his District nor about his real name, as 'Alchemist' seemed quite uncommon. He was a sorcerer, one of the most powerful magicians of the world for someone only twenty one of age.
Lucey noted with interested his handsome dobermann features and the mischief held in both his golden irises and his smirk.
A cough from Magnus brought her back to reality "Relationships between warriors are not illegal but also not advised. May I continue?"
Trying her hardest not to look embarassed she nodded, tearing her eyes away from the paper.
"As I said tomorrow you shall leave, pack your things and salute your friends here if you might, don't be late." That said, he vanished into thin air. Envying those with magic was quite easy.
Making sure no one was around, she proceeded to jump enthusiastically arpund for a while before stopping in front of the mirror.
She was met with a stupid grin and messed fur, long reddish hair in a mess. "Ok Lucey," she didn't even question too much how silly this situation would have looked had someone walked on her while she spoke to herself "tomorrow is a big day. These will be your teammates for the next five years if not more, you have to impress them. The first opinion is the most important."
Five hours later she had proceeded to say 'goodbye' to all of her teachers and 'friends', even though her father's voice reminded her "in competition there are no fellows", prepared all of her stuff, and spent an hour just to make her hair look acceptable.
It's futile to say that her mind didn't let her sleep, too busy imagining fights and reunions and that good-looking smirk of Alchemist's.
When 5AM came around, Lucey raised, tiptoeing to the bathroom so not to wake Colleen. But the girl was right there when she was about to leave, a bag full of some clothes, her pergamens, her pictures and some of her weapons in hand.
"Hey Whedon." Lucey almost chuckled at the use of her surname.
"I'll miss you too Coleen." She reached to hug the other girl, who hesitantly responded, but still added a "don't fuck it up."
Magnus and a tired looking servant were waiting for her and probrably other students which had been assigned today in the central hall, where the portals for the other bases were.
Upon seeing her the director nodded to the other dog, which activated the first portal. There were 24 in total, one for each district.
Those from 12 and above probably being the less used, since being moved to the other continent was rare, only those highly skilled were moved there, and they had to learn the language. She once heard that only two or three Districts spoke english there.
"District 1!" The servant shouted, and two girls came forward. The dog told them something and then they jumped. Some were on their own, as she was, others had their brother or sister.
Lucey thanked the gods that Yuri was too young for the academy, her Iperactive brother would be quite hard to look after.
"District 8!" Awaking from her daydream, she walked forward, gripping tightly at the handle of her bag. Magnus nodded to her, offering a farewell which she returned. The dog from before smiled at her and put a gentle hand on her back, and whispered "Is this the first time you teleport?"
It wasn't, she was from District 9, and told the servant so.
"Good, so remember: don't let go of your bag or it might never arrive, do not think too much and stay steady. Ready?"
Lucey gave one last look at her academy, before nodding and stepping inside.
She was met with dark, then voices and after a while blinding light.
"I'm tired." The voice of a brute said, raspy and low, the words were pronounced in a peliculiar way, almost as if he had an accent.
"You're always tired." A female voice retorted boredly, while another male one added "You can be such a child."
Another one, resolute and hard said "Hush, the portal is opening. Let's not look like a group of idiots for when she comes."
A moment of silence, then "From that picture she looked hot."
Three voices saying "Alchemist!" in a scolding way were the last thing she heard before everything came clearly into view.
Her eyes closed and opened at the obnoxious cloudy sky, but her mouth fell open at the inside of the Julius Base. Each wall was painted carefully, gothic statues adorning the room.
"Hey, Lucey Whedon?" She turned just to see a group of three boys and one girl sitting on the near stairs, the only ones in the large room except her, the portal twitched and silenced behind her. As she nodded and then proceeded to approach they were no others that the people from the pictures, Team Icarus, her team!
The dobermann was the first to raise, and oh was he beautiful. She barely reached his chin, and one of his arms was probrably the size of her body. The picture was nothing compared from the in real life, the color of his irises of an amazing yellow. Had she not known he was the sorcerer, she would have been able to tell by the runes tattoo. His were more studied and complicated, from flames and arrows on his arms and keys on his toned chest, unfortunately covered. She started to wonder which ones he had on his abs when he outstretched his hand, long fingers covered by various rings and a tattoo.
"Alchemist, pleasured to meet you." As he tenderly took her hand she felt a sparkle of energy, was that what magic felt like?
He placed a gentle kiss on her knuckles, which made her struggle to reply. "Lucey, same for me."
Noticing both of the belgian shepard rolling their eyes she offered a small smile at the enchanting sorcerer and then turned her attention to them.
Hela and James greeted her shortly, then started talking on their own. Those two looked quite reserved and aware, being the only ones who had armors on, while both Alchemist and the other dog that could only be Jay were both in a black top and sweatpants.
"Jay Macintosh." His blue eyes pierced through hers, she almost didn't notice him not extending neither of his hands, instead keeping them with disinterest in his pockets. "I'm the head of Team Icarus-" she heard a scoff behind her "there are four other teams here which you are not forced to have any relationship with. We barely share food. You'll have your own room, breakfast is at 5 and thirty AM and training starts at 6. Lunch at 1PM and dinner at 8, do not be late. Missions will start for you next week, once we deem you worthy. Today you may do as you please."
That said, he gave her one last disinterested look and walked away.
'What a jerk!' Lucey thought 'He believes himself above me?'
A warm hand on her shoulders made her turn, a smile immediately forming on her lips at Alchemist's view.
"Don't mind him, he's like that with everyone. Shall we show Lucey to her chambers guys?" He said the last part to the twins, who shrugged and followed. She was led up four rows of stairs, being shown the kitchen and the dining hall.
"And up there are our rooms. We share our floor with Team Cassius, they should be out for a mission but you'll meet them soon enough- never mind, there they are."
Five girls ran past them, all of them screaming "late for mission" or "looking good Alchie".
Lucey gave one last look past her shoulder at the running dogs, amused. "Are they always like that?"
The dobermann shrugged, smirking knowingly "Most of the time." She suddenly wondered to what he was referring, but forgot about it once she was met with twelve doors carefully lined beside each other.
Alchemist's finger pointed and explained fast "That at the end is the bathroom, we all use it but don't worry it's divided in two, that one is Jay's and then there is yours, that's mine and those two are of the twins. The others are of Cassius's. If you don't remember the meetings or whatever..."
A yellow paper appeared in his hand, which he offered to her.
But Lucey raised her chin to look him in the eye, and smirked "Don't worry, I do not need to be looked after. I'll remember them."
Not without an hint of excitement she noticed James raise his ears and smile slightly, while his sister only stared pensively. Alchemist also raised his lips, and the paper light on a yellow fire before quickly disappearing.
"Very well then, I have work to do in the laboratory," he said, and made her wonder if the name 'Alchemist' actually had some sort of connection after all. "I suppose you'd like to get settled in your room, the keys are on the lock, if you need help just ask for us. You will meet our coordinator tomorrow."
Then, he leaned down and kissed her on both cheecks, before walking away followed by the two belgian shepard's.
With her face feeling so hot she might explode, Lucey practically knocked her room open, laughing satisfied at the wedding sized bed, the giant desk and chair and guardrobe. The brunette's eyes slipped to the center of the bed, noticing a pile of clothes with a little note on them.
"Welcome to the team." It read, and she grinned widely upon seeing the leather coat, shirt, pants, belt and boots with the Icarus sign upon them. A little sized knife also with the mark was between them.
Lucey sat on the enormous chair, set on writing a letter to her parents. Forty minutes later she had it ready, but not after a couple of failed tries. They thought her back in District 12!
She took the little note too to throw it away with the failed attempts, and turning the little thing around her small hand she noticed it, on the opposite side of the greeting, written in small characters: "be careful."
That day she skipped both meals.
