Near midday, Reesa, Koru, Bry, and Eeve had finally arrived at the gathering. There were a few dragons lounging around here and there, but most of them gathered around the drinking and food area. Koru scowled at her. "I thought we were done with this!" he growled. "After all that had happened a couple months ago, I thought you would forget it. I thought you wanted to forget it."

She turned and her verdant eyes met his, spiteful and livid. "I was never done, and I will never forget."

"This isn't you, Reesa! You have hardened more than just your muscles. You've hardened your heart." Koru looked at her sternly and stated, "I love you. I don't want you to do this."

Reesa glowered at her mate and gouged the stone ground with her claws. "I have to."

Koru boldly stood head-to-head with Reesa, his stormy blue eyes churning with frustration. "No, you don't!" he growled. "We are happy now and far from that wicked beast. Let. It. Go!"

Reesa growled angrily back. "You may be happy, but I can't let it go!" she hissed. "You don't understand." She turned and walked away toward the edge. "He took more from me than I can give back. He took away my soul. His debt will be paid with blood; I have to kill him. And even if I can't kill him, I will die trying, for who you loved before no longer exists. Without her soul, she is nothing."

"The first time I saw you after that incident, I knew you were torn apart, but you were not soulless! After I woke up the second time, you had returned--I saw that look in your eyes--and you've been with me since then, soul and all. I fought for that. I fought for you. Now you're fading away without fighting for yourself, Reesa. You're letting your own soul slip between your claws like the grains of sand. Don't go--stay with me. You are something to me. Reesa stopped and looked wistfully back at him. "I must go." She spread her wings, but Koru jumped in front of her and tersely roared, crouched down and ready to strike.

"No!" he shouted. "I can't let you throw your life away!"

Reesa snarled and mirrored his stance. "Move, Koru!" At that moment, she didn't care that he was her mate. If he would stop her from fulfilling her task, then so be it; she would have to go through him first.

"Don't do this!" A small, crystalline tear fell from his cheek. His limbs were trembling.

She saw straight through his weak resolve.

Reesa growled viciously and lunged, pouncing on Koru. She was much stronger than him and easily threw him off to the side. Her bones felt like steel, her scales like armor, and her claws like razor-sharp swords. There was nothing that could stop her. Koru realized his situation and abandoned his hopes. He lay where he was tossed, weeping for his mate as she left him.

Reesa unfurled her wings and leapt into the skies. She turned to the Southwest and flew as fast as she could back to her home--back to kill Tyrand.
