Chapter 22
While Varshgar chased Adriana she ran into an unknown creature. While it looked, in the dark, like a lizard it smelled horrible to hear. It seems to Adriana that this creature was unable to communitcate proper with her. Varshgar almost lost her trace when he smelled the creature.
Varshgar jumped from branch to branch through the trees on his way west. From this direction he still smelled a faint scent of Adriana. With each movement he made to the next branch, he hoped that the trail would slowly become stronger. But so far that has not been the case. Even if it, so far, did not look good, he could not stop. The sun went down with every minute that passed more and more behind the horizon.
"I've got to hurry up and find her!" he thought to himself, and stepped it up another notch.
Once the sun sets, Varshgar would have a harder time finding them. Or even to avoid enemy attacks, let alone see them. Even if he could see better in the dark than the people, it was still not easy to fight a direct battle.
"I depend on the element of surprise." he reflected in his mind.
If he had to fight a direct battle, then depending on whom he had to fight, it would be a problem. Again Varshgar sniffed and slowly detected an underlying smell of mustiness.
"Ewww... What's that?" he asked himself, grabbing his nose with his left paw. Even though the smell wasn't very strong yet, it was penetrating enough to make Varshgar want to plaster his nose.
"That's disgusting..." he thought to himself, but nevertheless continued to jump from branch to branch.
"Even if it would still stink it couldn't stop me from finding Adriana. I just have to be fast enough. I can't let anything happen to her."
Again Varshgar became a little faster, but he couldn't keep up this level of speed forever, that much was clear to him. But he had no other choice. It was now time for him to perform at his best. And once again the wolf got a few meters further and slowly a new scent seemed to mingle with it. Even if the musty smell was still present so slowly something new came up. Something that he, until now, had never smelled so intensely, but it was difficult for him to classify this smell. The further he progressed, the more difficult it became to follow Adriana's trail. More and more smells were now mixed in. But many were completely foreign to him.
"Damn... I'm going to lose their scent if this keeps up." he thought to himself and saw only one option. He jumped upward into the canopy of the nearest tree. He clawed at the branch and swung himself upwards. Higher and higher, farther and farther, until he landed on a final branch. Then he pushed himself off and jumped into the air. Varshgar cut through the treetop and now had a clear view. Above him rose majestically the sky with the moon.
"It's a waxing moon. That's good!" he thought to himself. But as he looked around he almost couldn't believe what he was about to see.
In front of him, to the west, was a huge jungle.
"Unbelievable" was all he thought to himself, and he was already on his way back down.
With a skillful grip of his two paws, he clawed at the last branch and swung himself up again. With this jump, he found a foothold in a nearby tree whose leaves, in the crown, had grown only sparsely. From here he could see everything there was to see. He could even see the distant lights of the city of Ashgvanthal, which was behind him. But in front of him rose threateningly a dark mountain.
It was this sight alone that almost froze Varshgar's blood in his veins.
"It is a threatening sight. And at the same time, I'm incredibly interested in taking a closer look at this mountain.... " he thought to himself.
For a moment he let this picture work on him. In addition, the sun had now set completely, which made the search more difficult for him, but also made it easier to pick up the trail again.
"Let's see then..." he thought to himself and jumped down from the crown onto the lower branches.
He held his muzzle in the wind and let everything blow around his nose. On him many smells impinged which there was here. Among other things, he also smelled water, plants and some animals. Under the smells of the animals still something very peculiar mixed itself. It smelled like a lizard. But this smell was different. Something of the smell of Adriana still clung to it.
"That's it!" he thought to himself and dashed off. He followed the trail and jumped over the branches further west towards deeper into the jungle.
"I have such a dull feeling..." he thought to himself as he continued to follow the trail. In the meantime, the creature had all its claws full holding Adriana.
>>Now let go of me, you rude thing!<< she squealed while punching the creature in its supposed nose.
For a brief moment, the creature's grip loosened, and it held its nose. But immediately it grabbed her with the other paw. It growled violently and grumbled while holding its nose at the same time. Even if Adriana didn't get far, she now knew at least that it could feel pain.
>>Aw! You...Ah!<< she said as the creature grabbed her again and pulled her further. She still resisted the power of the creature, but she was almost powerless against it. Nevertheless, she did not want to give up her resistance and fought bravely on.
Varshgar, who was still following the trail, came closer and closer to the mountain he had seen from the crown of the tree. And the closer he came, the worse his feelings became about what was happening to him.
>>I don't think it's good if the trail leads there...<< he said to himself. But so far the trail did not take any other direction. From tree to tree and on and on his feet carried him, as fast as he could.
>>Damn... again! Don't you have ears, you stupid lump?!<< Adriana raged and kicked the creature in the heels. It began to growl and jumped up when Adriana did. She took advantage of the moment and ran. The creature needed a moment to catch itself, but immediately it followed Adriana into the darkness. Varshgar kept looking at the ground and tried to follow the trail that was slowly but surely getting stronger.
He had only one hope that this smell, which he had perceived at the scent of Adriana, did not come from an evil being. His gaze became firmer and more determined the closer he got to the mountain.
>>Adriana! Do not worry! I'll be with you soon!<< he growled.
