Love is a feline: Final
Final chapter to 'Love is a feline'
I find myself lost in thought as I stand before Evelyn’s door, a small smile on my lips. We've been dating for a few weeks now, and I've been loving every minute of it. Evelyn has been more ready to lead the charge since my daring kiss on our first date. And lead she did. She’s the first to kiss me no matter where we are, and she doesn’t care if anybody sees.
I didn't know a female of her age could be so feisty, but I wasn’t complaining. We've been spending a lot of quality time together, and I've gotten a huge confidence boost from knowing I can make a female of her age and experience look twenty years younger by making her laugh and smile. I'm curious about our future together, but that's beside the point.
What brings me here today is that I've been enjoying a different side of her in private. Sure, she’ll invite me over to spend some time together, mostly cooking for me, but if the purring over the phone was any indication, we’d likely be getting frisky. I didn’t take long to pick up on her small quirks. When she craves attention, she purrs. Or how the tip of her tail will swish when she’s being playful.
Even her whiskers bob slightly in a nonexistent breeze while she’s content. I raise my hand and knock a few times; It’s silly to keep her waiting daydreaming about her. When I hear her walking up to the door, I expect to see Evelyn, but instead, a male cougar greets me. A frown clear on his face as he sizes me up, looking to be around my age.
“Can I help you?” He asks.
Before I get a chance to say anything, Evelyn comes up from behind him and takes him by the scruff, nearly making him go limp as his eyes widen in surprise.
“I said I could answer the door myself,” she states, pulling him back before letting go and taking his place, giving me a nervous smile. “I’m sorry, David. My son,” she briefly glares at him before turning back to me. “Decided to make an unexpected visit.”
“Oh?” I look past her to see him rubbing his scruff, clearly annoyed. “Should we hang out another time?”
“No, I believe he was just leaving.” She turns to her son. “As I said, Jake. I’m doing just fine.”
“Who is this guy, Mom?” He puts a sneer on his face while looking my way.
“My boyfriend,” she puts bluntly.
“Y-You’re what?” He’s genuinely shocked.
“My boyfriend,” she confirms. “Not like it’s any of your business.”
The sudden shift from utter shock to laughter in his expression is not what I anticipated.
“Alright, Mom. Haha! Did sissy put you up to this?” He turns around. “You can come out now! Jokes over!”
“I’m not joking,” Evelyn says with irritation in her tone.
He doesn’t even acknowledge her, instead brushing past to look me over.
“Getting a human to play the part made it obvious.”
She takes him by the scruff again, but this time turns him so that he is staring directly into her eyes.
“David is my boyfriend.”
The silence after that felt like an eternity. She lets go of him, and he just stands there in total confusion.
“What do you mean boyfriend?” He asks after coming to his senses.
Evelyn sighs. “Jake, he’s my boyfriend. We’re dating. Don’t make this into a big deal.”
“N-Not make it into a big deal?” He frowns. “Mom, why the hell would a young guy like him date you? This smoothie is clearly up to something.”
As soon as he said it, I internally cringed. Evelyn even recoiled as if hit, her palm resting on her chest and eyes glistening. The "smoothie" comment wasn't it; I heard it so many times in school that it no longer bothered me. The problem is that Jake effectively said that his mother was too old for anybody to be interested in her without a motive.
If it were my mother, I would also be suspicious, but he went about it the wrong way. I have to restrain myself from speaking out since I know it's not what Evelyn would want. Still, I'm here for her, and I don't think twice about holding her hand to show her that. She flinches slightly and looks over as I offer an apology smile.
When she turns her gaze back to Jake, there’s a certain fire burning behind it. One I recognized from my mother when she was about to scold me.
“If I were interested in discussing this, I would’ve done so earlier. I’m old enough to make my own decisions, and nothing you say will change that.” She pulls me close. “Since you’re in my home, I’d appreciate it if you were to close the door on your way out.” Finally, she breaks eye contact to look at me. “Sorry for the interruption.”
Evelyn guides me further inside. Jake opens his mouth about to say something but instead lets out a huff.
“I’m telling sissy about this!” With that said, he storms off but not before closing the door.
Now that we are alone ourselves, Evelyn loses her stern, motherly expression as the weight of his earlier remarks hits her.
“I’m sorry you had to see that,” she says, defeated.
I hold her hand tight. “You don’t have anything to be sorry for. All I care about is that I’m not getting in the way of you and your kids.”
“You’re not in the way.” She looks up at me with a weak smile. “They’ll always be my kids, but they’re adults living their own lives. It’s unfair for them to expect me not to do the same.”
It's painful to see Evelyn in such a vulnerable state. It’s like her usual liveliness has been culled. I may not be the most charming man, but I'll do everything I can to make her happy.
“Sissy?” I ask with a smile.
Since this all went down, a genuine smile graces her.
“My daughter.” She chuckles to herself. “I don’t know what he expects her to do. She took after her father the most, so I doubt she’ll complain.”
This is a solid start, but I must continue to push. I rest my hand on her cheek and use my thumb to stroke her.
“I know the mood is sour, but I’m fine with starting fresh.”
She lets out a sigh of contentment. “That would be best.”
When she finally seems at ease, she grabs my hand, and we both sit down on the sofa facing one other. Gingerly she moves closer and kisses me. I find myself drifting into our usual rhythm. It became clear early on that Evelyn loves stuff like this. Kissing, caressing. She's been starving for things most people would consider vanilla. It is not unusual for us to have hours-long makeout sessions.
It's amazing, but I've noticed that her typical passion isn't there right now. It seems as if she is only going through the motions for my benefit while her thoughts are elsewhere. Pulling back, she looks at me quizzically as I stoke her back a bit.
“We don’t have to do this right now,” I tell her.
She heaves a heavy sigh, knowing I can tell she isn’t in the mood anymore.
“I’m sorry, David.”
“No apologies needed. You know I like hanging out with you.”
Evelyn groans and sinks into the sofa, staring up at the ceiling.
“I thought I taught him better,” she says to herself. “Using that word in front of you. Accusing you of...”
The pain is so intense that she cannot bear to finish her thought. I put my hand on hers and attempted to comfort her.
“Hey, it’s alright, Eve.”
“It’s not alright, David.” She chokes back a sob. “He made it seem as if what we have is a joke. Like... Like I’m some senile cat who doesn’t know better. Because my money is all I’m worth.”
“He didn’t mean it like that.” I scoot closer as I figure out how to explain this. “I get where he’s coming from. Some younger guy dating an older female... A lot of people come to the same conclusion as well. The guy is in it for the money.” I lift her face up, and she opens her eyes to look into mine. “We know that isn’t true for us. He went about it wrong, but the takeaway is that he was worried about you.”
I use my thumb to remove some of her tears that have matted into her fur, and she immediately leans in for a kiss. When we start to move away, I can see that she looks a lot better, and she sits back and gazes forward, taking it all in. While my visit was largely going to be about us making out, I had another idea in mind that I thought would be appropriate to bring up now.
Evelyn is usually cooking for me, and I wanted to show my appreciation. I'm not much of a chef, but I have heard of a new, romantic restaurant that has opened in town. Maybe the best approach to lifting her spirits is to get her out of the house?
“Hey, Eve. Wanna go have dinner with me?”
“What?” She looks my way, confused. “Are you hungry? I don’t mind cooking you something.”
“No, I’m not hungry.” I chuckle. “I meant I wanted us to go out on a date. Just you and me having a romantic dinner.”
I give her my best smile, and I’m glad to see some of that gloom shed away as she rolls her eyes with a smirk.
“Don’t give me those puppy eyes, Dave. If you must insist, then we can.” She gets up from the couch and looks at me. “However, there is one catch.”
“That is?” I raise a brow.
“If I’m going to go on a date, I want a new dress before then. Let’s go shopping.”
As her mood improves, I find my smile growing larger.
“Fine by me.”
She's already on her way out the door, and I'm even more eager to make this day special for her.
As usual, Evelyn and I are strolling side by side, her arm around mine. The mall is rather busy for this time of day, and many shoppers, both human and Beastborn, cast curious glances in our direction due to the obvious age and species difference between us. However, neither of us pays them any mind as we focus instead on our time together. The clothing is located elsewhere, so we've basically just been window shopping on the way there. There was definitely a lot to look at, but neither one of us found anything really appealing.
Even though there is some time until we get to the shop, Evelyn still seems to be reflecting on what her son did this morning.
“What does Jake do for a living?” I ask out of the blue.
“Accounting.” She answers.
“Is he married yet or dating? I know you said you were waiting for some grandkids the first time we met.”
The fur around her face reddens as she giggles. “Don’t bring that up while we’re together. It makes me feel so old.”
“You certainly didn’t sound old purring on the phone.”
She playfully slaps my shoulder. “Stop! If you’re just going to embarrass me until I answer, I’ll save you the trouble. Yes, he’s dating and they’ll most likely get married one day.”
“Oh? They’re that good together?”
“My son loves her, and he’s very old-fashioned. So he’ll stick with her through thick and thin.” She scoffs with a smile. “I think he learned it from my parents.”
“That’s great to hear.” I can tell her mood is steadily improving. “What about your daughter?”
“I’ll just say she’s very open with how she interprets dating. She said she’ll bring a male over whenever she found one worth staying with. So far, I haven’t seen one.”
“Definitely sounds like she takes after her father.”
“You don’t even know half of it,” she answers with a smirk before her eyes shift over to a store. “There it is.” I’m about to follow her inside but she rests a hand on my chest as she wags her finger. “I want this to be a surprise. I’m sure you can manage without me for thirty minutes.”
Well, I wasn’t expecting this, but I’m game for it.
“I’ll just walk around for a bit. See you here in thirty.” I confirm, walking away.
With Evelyn entering the shop, I’m now left to my own devices. I might as well check stuff out.
I wonder what Evelyn would like?
I went into a jewelry shop to look around for some inspiration. It's not urgent, but it would be nice to have an idea of what I'd purchase her if the opportunity presented itself. The problem is that I don't believe I've ever seen her wearing any jewelry. Upon reflection, have I ever seen a Beastborn wearing jewelry? The only exception would be piercings; otherwise, no dangling necklaces or bracelets.
“Do you need some help, Sir?”
I look over and find a female zebra standing there with a perfect customer smile.
“Actually, do you mind if I asked a few quesitons?”
“Not at all. Ask, and I’ll try my best to assist in any way I can.”
“This is a bit embarrassing to ask, but do beastborn wear jewelry?”
“Looking for gift ideas?” She smiles coily as I nod. “Well, this should be no trouble at all. I’d say lots of Beastborn wear jewelry. However, there are a few things to keep in mind while you browse.” She waves over to a section full of necklaces. “Necklaces are popular with short fur, as they tend to get stuck or tangled depending on how long their fur is.” She leans in close to whisper into my ear. “There are some necklaces made for longer fur but clients still don’t like them.”
“Oh.” I listen genuinely interested.
She leans back. “The coarseness of fur may also be a factor in making your choice.” She moves over to another section. “The safest choice usually are earrings, as most beastborn get them pierced. The only issue you may have is how long their ears are. I’d say the minimum for beastborn is two piercings per ear.” She points her ears. “Mine are a bit on the longer side, so I have five on each; this helps fill out the space and make it look less empty.”
“Wow. Thank you, this has been really helpful.”
She sweeps her arm over the counter. “Feel free to browse, I’ll be around if you need any more help.”
“Thank you.”
With gratitude for what I've learned, I go back to look at everything. Doing my best to keep Evelyn in mind. Her fur is lengthy, but not as long as some of the canines I've seen. It’s also coarse. Maybe the earrings idea wasn’t so bad? But are Evelyn's ears even pierced? There’s no way I could tell! She has fur there too! Oh man, this is tougher than I thought.
“David?” I hear someone who isn't Evelyn calling my name.
When I look back, I'm shocked to see the hyena I dated in high school.
“Jessica! What are you doing here?” I asked, walking up to her.
“I was walking past, and I thought I smelled you. What are you doing?”
“Browsing gifts for my girlfriend.”
I saw it because it always happens. Her fur rises up all over her body and her lips draw back in a snarl. She instantly turns her back on me.
“I-I’m so sorry, David.”
“It’s alright; I know it’s just a natural reaction,” I say honestly. “How are you and your husband doing?”
She pauses to get her breath before turning back to face me. Hyenas are known to be possessive about former flings. So anytime this occurs, I don't take offense. She gives me an apologetic smile.
“Great. He took the kids to buy some games, so I decided to walk around a little.” She seems to be trying to stop her lips from curling into a snarl, and even her throat starts to growl a little. “S-So you have a girlf-frrriend?”
“Yeah, we met a few weeks ago. It’s going great.”
“That’s good.” She lets out an almost exhausted sigh before instantly embracing me tight and savoring my scent. “It was nice seeing you again.”
I hug her back. She’s a nice girl, and I know it’s tough for a hyena to move on.
“It was nice seeing you too.” She lets go of me, and I smile at her. “You know my number if you want to hang out.” I chuckle. “But you have your hands full with your kids.”
“That is true. I better not keep them waiting. Goodbye, David.”
I follow Jessica out of the store as I give her a wave. “Bye!”
Before I can even begin to make my way back to Evelyn, she is already standing next to me with her arm around mine.
“Is that who I think it is?” She asks.
“Yeah, that was the one.”
“For a second there, I thought things were going to get nasty.”
“I will admit, it did take some study and getting used to. But I know it’s just instinct. She’s actually a lot more chill than most hyenas are with their ex’s.”
“That I know very well,” Evelyn confirms. “Though most Beastborn tend to be more aggressive with their own kind.”
“I guess that’s true.” I look down at the two bags she’s carrying. “All done?”
“I am. Let’s head back to my place so we can get ready.” I look down at myself and realize I wasn’t dressed for a nice dinner. Evelyn picks up on this. “Don’t worry; I got something for you too.”
She hands me the other bag. I check inside and see a really nice-looking suit.
“...How much did this cost?” I ask, not expecting this.
“Don’t worry about it.” She pulls me along. “Let’s hurry back.”
No reason to look a horse in the mouth. She’s enjoying herself, so I’ll go along with it.
It’s been some time since I’ve worn a suit, but I’m surprised by how well it fits. How did Evelyn guess my size? That doesn’t matter; I’m feeling good and looking presentable.
“Ready?” She asks.
When I turn to face her, I feel my heart skip a beat. She's stunning, I know I say it a lot, but it just keeps coming back to mind. I could easily imagine her on the front of a magazine cover as she stood at the threshold of her room and looked at me expectantly. She’s wearing a cyan lace dress, and I note a large glint around her ears... So she does have pierced ears as a few silver hoop earrings rest in a pattern on her ears.
It stands out in a way how much she shimmers. Her fur, the silk, and the earrings. It's as though my mind is having difficulty focusing on just one aspect of her. I snap out of my daze and grin at her.
“I’m ready. I have to say; you keep surprising me with how beautiful you are.”
Her fur darkens. “Well, you look rather dashing yourself. How is the suit? Too tight?”
“Perfect.” I walk over and open the door for her. “Shall we?”
She can only giggle as she walks out as I close the door behind us. I can’t wait to enjoy this meal together.
This is exactly how I pictured this going. Evelyn and I sitting in a dimly lit restaurant, just the two of us gazing at one another as we wait for our meals. Everything from this morning has melted away, and I couldn't be happier. I reach across the table and hold her hand, and she smiles back before interlocking our fingers. Nothing has to be said right now as we just enjoy this moment.
It really makes me think back to how we first met. To think that crossing the street to help someone changed my life so much. Before, I was content with just my job. Occasionally, I’d hang out with my friends and family, but I prefered to be alone. Since dating Evelyn, not only has she been more adamant about us going out, I’ve found myself wanting to show her places too.
Maybe it's because we have so much fun together. I can't say for sure, but I know I want to be with her no matter what.
“How did I get so lucky to find you?” I ask.
She blushes heavily at that, resting her offhand on her cheek.
“Don’t be silly, Dave. I’m the one who’s lucky here. I never would’ve thought in a million years that I’d be in such a romantic restaurant with a fine young man such as yourself.”
I chuckle. “Seems we might’ve used up all of our luck, but I’m not complaining.”
“Neither am I.”
I glance up at her ears, recalling my gift idea.
“I didn’t know you had pierced ears.”
“It’s no surprise. I haven’t worn earrings in many years, but I thought it was appropriate given the occasion.”
“I know I probably sound like a broken record, but you’re beautiful.”
“If you’re a broken record, then I have no intention of fixing you.”
She leans in, and we share a quick kiss just as the waiter arrives with our meals. So far so good with this date, and the food is smelling great too. So without anything needing to be said, Evelyn and I enjoy our meals.
I have to say, I think that went off without a hitch. We returned to her place after our meal to relax together a bit longer before I went home. Evelyn snuggled up close to me as I held her, and it was a perfect ending to an awkward morning... Or so I thought, as we were both startled to hear a knock at the door.
“Let go!” Comes through muffled.
“Stop struggling, you twerp!”
“Ow!”
As I try to make sense of the situation, I glance towards Evelyn. She just sighs before moving away from me and shouting.
“Come in!”
When the door opens, I blink again as my gaze darts from Evelyn to the female cougar pulling Jake by the ear into the house with a scowl on her face. What has me stunned is that she is the spitting image of Evelyn, only slightly shorter and no gray fur. As soon as she walks into the living room, she throws Jake into the middle.
“Say it!” She shouts.
“Why? I didn’t say anything wrong.”
Without hesitation, she kicks him in the gut, taking away his breath.
“Who the hell cares if mom is dating a human, you asshole!” She kicks him again. “Say it!”
“Um, should you say something?” I whisper to Evelyn.
“It wouldn’t matter. Layla won’t stop until she’s satisfied. Not like this is the first time this has happened.”
Well, if Evelyn is fine with this, I guess I’ll just wait to see what happens.
“S-Sorry, Mom.” Jake stammers out.
“Next time, think before you say stupid shit like that.” When Layla turns to face me, all of her rage fades and is replaced with the most cheerful and exuberant grin. “Hi there. I’m Layla.” She plops right next to me and leans in to take my scent. “Wow, you really do smell like mom. I guess it goes without saying you are totally into her. I mean, to smell that strong, you two must be grinding pretty hard.”
My cheeks flushes as I attempt to spit out a response, but Layla only laughs and shifts her focus to her mother.
“I didn’t know you had a soft spot for humies. He’s totally cute.”
“Layla, tone it down; he doesn’t get your humor.”
She smiles and chuckles nervously. “Sorry, Mom.” She looks at her brother briefly, who is currently picking himself off the ground. “Sorry about Jake. You know how he is.”
“It’s fine, Layla.” Evelyn looks my way. “David was very adamant about how Jake was only worried about me.”
Layla wraps her arms around me and pulls my face into her breasts.
“Is that so? What a fine example of a gentleman. Even though my idiotic brother was being so rude, you comforted my mother and defended him.”
I pull away from her. “U-Uh... No problem.”
She giggles, leaning to look at her mother again. “Really cute.”
“Thank you, Layla. I’m alright, honestly. David and I are just enjoying some time after our date.”
“A date?” She purrs heavily. “Mom, that’s adorable. Where’d you go?”
Layla seems to want to have a little conversation with her mother; while Jake picks himself up and tries to rub the soreness from his stomach. I know this is going to be an uphill battle but I want to try and make this better, for Evelyn’s sake.
“I’m going to get a drink real quick,” I announce to Evelyn and she gives me a nod as her daughter takes my place and chats with her mom.
Since I could hear someone following me, I didn't have to turn around to see who it was. It was jake and that’s fine. When I reach the kitchen, I face him as he stands there with a frown.
“Don’t think because my sister is fine with this that I don’t see what you’re doing,” he states.
“Like I told your mother, I get it. From the outside, it’s obvious what’s going on. I’m using her for the money, right?”
“Of course you are!” He shouts. “Smoothies can’t be trusted!”
“Some can’t, others can.” I shrug. “The same can be said with Beastborn. The fact is, I can’t change your mind. It’s impossible to reason someone out of something they weren’t reasoned into.” This time I lock my eyes with his in all seriousness. “Even still, I’m not afraid to say that I love your mother. I enjoy our time together. It doesn’t matter if we’re at the park or just sitting here watching TV. I’m not interested in getting between you and her, but I’m also not going to let you get between her and me.”
As I uttered all of these things, the frown on his face changed to bewilderment. He simply looked at me for a bit before huffing and storming out of the kitchen and house. I enter the living room, where Evelyn and Layla both look at me.
“Nice job.” Layla gives me a thumbs-up before turning to her mother. “Talk to you later, Mom. I better catch up with Jake and take him home.”
“Goodnight, Layla,” Evelyn says as her daughter leaves.
I rub the back of my neck as Evelyn looks at me from the corner of her eye, her fur dark from blushing.
“Uh... D-Did you two hear me?”
She nods, and I just walk over and sit beside her.
“So... I know it’s probably too early to say this but I-I... I love you.”
I can see the smile on her lips, but she keeps glancing at me from the corner of her eye.
“An old cat like me?” She asks in a playful tone.
“You’re no old cat; you’re Evelyn.”
When she turns to face me, I can tell her eyes are a bit glossy, but she’s very happy.
“I love you too.”
Nothing else needed to be said as we leaned into a kiss. All of this has been unexpected, but I’m grateful. Evelyn has shown me so much, and I’m happy for whatever comes next in our relationship.
