The man among beast chapter 2
Second chapter of my first story working on chpater three as of now.
Third pov
James stepped out of the carriage with Margaret still sitting in his arms, a happy smile on her face. She clung to him as if he were an older brother or a beloved uncle. Sir Wildfang had two soldiers carrying James's bags as they walked to the front door. He'd thanked them as they walked with them. The soldiers were surprised; he thanked them and smiled as they followed.
“My puppy!"
A large female came running out of the front door. She wore a black dress with a red rose on her left hip. Like Wildfang and Margaret, she had white fur, but her eyes were a deep red. She stopped when she saw Margaret sitting in the arms of a human. She saw the soldiers, and her husband seemed relaxed with her in his arms.
“Isabel is something wrong?"
Isabel nodded before she quickly walked over and wrapped her arms around Margaret. Margaret held to James, not letting go as her mother tried to pull her from his arms.
“No! I want to stay with James!"
Isabel, surprised, let go of her, and Margaret set back in James's arms as Wildfang spoke up.
“Isabel my love you can trust James with Margaret. He did save our lives not three hours ago."
Isabel's eyes opened wide, and she looked at the man. She saw her puppy happily kicking her legs as she sat on his arm. She couldn't believe what she had just been told—a human risking his life for a beastman. Isabel had never heard of a human who would do such a thing all her life. But here one was, and her puppy was clinging to him.
“Before you ask his name is James and I've offered him work. I've also offer for him to join the cities adventures guild."
James laughed as he kneeled, and Margaret did, knowing she had to let go this time. She put her paws on the ground and grabbed James's hand as he stood back up. Wildfang, Isabel, and the guards saw the happy puppy looking up at James, who stood slightly bent over. As to not make Margaret's arm strain.
"Sweetheart, you need to go with your mother. I need to head off to the adventure guildhall. I'll be back around before you know it."
Margaret frowned as she grabbed the edge of her dress and stood there. James laughed and then patted her back with his other hand.
"Come on pup, Mommy wants to talk."
Isabel quickly picked Margaret up, and she let go of James's hand. He laughed and patted her head. Margaret frowned, but Isabel smiled at him, glad to see a nice human. She quickly walked away while Sir Wildfang watched, a little upset with how his wife acted. Here, he found a rare good, good-natured human with manners, and she treated him like he'd barely even be here.
"Hey Sir Wildfang."
Sir Wildfang looked at James and saw him looking around. He smiled before he waved a guard over. A male boxer walked over as Sir Wildfang started to talk.
"I want you to take my friend here to the adventure guildhall. Once he's there, wait nearby then head to the market and get him some new gear and a sword or spiked Mac. A good quality shield and some leather armor and tell them to send me the invoices."
James was about to say something Sir Wildfang held his hand up.
"If you are going to do this line of work let me at least get you started. I'll also be handing you jobs from time to time so conset this an investment."
James laughed with a smile and then nodded.
"Yes sir."
Sir Wildfang laughed and then nodded before starting for the front door. With a smile, James looked at the boxer and held his hand out.
"A pleasure sir and let me go ahead an say thanks for the help."
The boxer blinked as he looked at the hand. Once again, James saw the surprise on his face. Then he smiled as he grabbed the hand.
"I'm happy to help you young hound."
James noticed the word hound and guessed it was how they referred to young men here. The two let each other's hands go, and then they started to walk. James noticed many beastmen species as they walked: horses, deer, and pigs. As they walked deeper into the two, she saw even more: bulls, cows, griffins, cats, wolves, and many dog breeds, but only the larger breeds: Doberman, boxers, pit bulls, rottweilers, great Danes, shepherds, and huskies. He also noticed many looking at him as he walked with the guard. Many of the older beasts seemed interested but kept their distance. The young beasts came around, and a few got close, but some older beasts pulled them away.
"You'd do well to get used to this, my friend. Many young hounds and young females have never seen a real human. The older beasts have seen what humans of lesser respect and creator are like. You may found many not to welcoming to you at first Sir James."
James nodded, then looked at him.
"And your name sir?"
The boxer smiled before he spoke.
"Ace."
James nodded before Ace stopped and then pointed down the road.
“Go down this road then turn right."
James nodded and started to walk on his own. Soon, he reached the guildhall. He hummed as he looked up at the rather spacious building, which looked more like a large two-story wooden castle.
“Do you need some help young hound?"
James looked over and saw an older Doberman woman. She was dressed in a white blouse, green skirt, and a black wrap around her stomach. He saw some grey at the root of her hair and more along her face. But she looked like she was still in a healthy condition. She had her hair tied up in a bun with a kind smile. She had a fine shape of body with larger-sized breasts and hips. James saw her paws wrapped like Margaret's. James smiled and remembered his manners. James nodded to her before speaking.
“No miss, I'm just taking it all in. I've been taught to read, write and a trade but you need money to start over."
She laughed before she stood and spoke.
“I understand that young hound. But, do be careful to not get hurt out there the great wolf knows we don't need more young hound or females to die out there."
James smiled and nodded as he looked at her.
“I'll do my best miss."
“Oh before you go do stop by the merchants guild if you every get more drops then the quest require. You'll get more money by selling the extra to them them then the guild."
James smiled, glad to hear the information, and would ask Sir Wildfang about it later.
James then walked up the steps, opened the door, looked in, and saw the same beasts. But, these were in leather and plate armor with weapons of all kinds. James heard a voice coming from his right.
“Oh, Welco…"
James looked over and saw a young cat woman. She had a white coat with a large orange patch over her chin, neck, and chin. She was smaller than many of the beasts around her. She was younger-looking compared to the others. Her body was a little chubby but in the right places. She wore a green blouse with a larger green skirt and a black necklace that looked like a collar. Her hair was a dark orange with a few black strips near her ears. Her ears were down on her skull as she looked at James.
“How, can I help you?"
James smiled as he walked over to the counter.
“Yes miss, I'd like to sign up to become and adventure."
The cat woman looked at him, her ears popping up as she looked at James. A human that spoke to her with a respectful tone. She smiled and then nodded as she spoke.
“That's great sir if you'll give me a minute I'll be right back."
James nodded as she turned and walked back into the office space. James watched her ass for a second, seeing the strangely alluring shock of her ass. Being nineteen, James was well into the age of looking at a woman's body, but this wasn't a human woman but was built like one. Tearing his eyes away, he turned and looked around the guildhall. He saw six different boards with papers fixed to them. As he looked, he noticed the colors above the boards. The first board had the most quests and was brown, and the second was dark brown. The third was a bright silver, while the fourth was a dark gold. Then, there was the almost jade-like green with a shiny black at the end of the hall.
“Sir."
James turned back and saw the cat woman walking up with a tray. He smiled as he looked at her, and she returned the smile as she looked at him. There were papers and a rank necklace.
“Can you read and write?"
James nodded as he looked at her, and she nodded, her smile staying in place as she pulled a quill and ink well out from the corner.
“That okay and I'm guessing your new to our country so leave the part of hometown empty."
James nodded, then looked down at the writing of this world and saw it was in old English. Nodding, James read over it quickly and saw they only asked for him to fill out his name, fighting style, and any other skills he may have. He'd also have to take another person with him as the guild requires you to take two to three missions as pairs until you reach the bronze rank. Remembering that screen, he wrote down his name and put his fighting style down as a frontline fighter. In the skills, she wrote out the skills as best as he could remember them. Heavy hitter: using this skill with all your strength, you can deal a critical blow on an enemy or monster. But at the cost of lowering defense for an hour. Then he wrote about amateur carpenters: This skill increases your Dexterity and Wisdom for two hours while working with wood and tools. Once he was done, he returned the papers to the woman.
“Thank you."
She quickly looked down at the papers.
“Sir James."
James smiled and waved his hand.
“No sir, I'm a pit to young for that right now. But, who will I need to team up with for the time being?"
The woman's smile dropped, and she looked over and saw only one other new applicant form. She grabbed the applicants and looked over them. She saw the female was from the slums and James would struggle as she would be little help. But these were the rules, and she pushed the necklace to him. James put it on as she watched him, hoping this man would make it to bronze.
“Yes, she's been waiting for a week for a partner to pair up with. I can give you her name and the place she lives but please be careful."
James, not sure what she meant, nodded then she quickly wrote down her name and where she lived in the bad side of town. She then held it out to James, who took it. He looked down at the information and saw it must be a woman he would be paired with. Her name was Emerald, and she lived in a large boarding house in the city's east end.
'Hm, she must be in the lower income range.'
James turned and started for the door as it opened. James saw Ace coming in and he smiled as he saw him.
“Good to see are back Ace. I need to go and find my new partner I got her name if you need it. "
Ace smiled as he looked at James.
“Sure do you know where she lives?"
James handed him the paper, and the adventurers looked on in shock, knowing that this human knew one of the elite guards of the duke's family. Then they saw his face change, and he nodded as he looked back at James.
“I can get you there but are you sure you want to go here?"
James was not sure what he was talking about, nether the less he nodded.
“Ya, best to go a head and meet her."
Ace nodded before he spoke again.
“Okay I have the gear outside so lets get you set up then will go get her."
James nodded then he followed Ace out of the hall. James smiled when he saw the gear and noticed he'd gotten two shields and a large cart. They walked to the back of the cart, and James saw two sets of leather armor, a large one-handed mace with seven metal rigged with a spike on the top. Beside the mace was an iron longsword with a leather wrapped handle with two shields in the back. One was painted black with an iron circle in the center and white paint around it. The second was white but with a blue circle around the metal centerpiece. James nodded, grabbed a cover, pulled it over the gear, and then turned to Ace.
“Given the way you looked at the address I think it's best to hide these until we get there."
Ace nodded, and then they started to walk as a horse pulled a cart. As they walked more eastward, James noticed the house starting to look more worn down. As they got deeper, James saw homeless beasts and puppies as they walked. James frowned as he looked at them. He saw that no matter the world, there was always inequality in the world. Soon, they stopped at a building that looked like it should be condemned.
“This is where she lives. You go in and get here I will wait here and I guess I won't be returning the second set."
James smiled, glad his partner would have some gear to start with. He quickly walked up to the door and opened it. He saw an older bull sitting in a chair behind a counter. He had a book and was writing some down with a quill.
“If you're looking for a room we're full up."
He spoke without looking up from the book.
James' eye twitched as he looked at him being ignored like that was annoying. James cleared his throat rather loudly, making the bull look up, and he frowned, seeing a human.
“What do you want human?"
James heard the edge and knew he would have to get used to this quickly. James walked up to him and then spoke as he looked the bull in the eye.
“I was sent here by a cat woman at the guild to meet and collect a miss Emerald. She is my partner until we reach bronze rank."
The bull snorted as he looked at the human but was glad to get that damn bitch out of the boarding house for a while.
“She lived in the basement far warning she's not going to be very helpful to you unless you just want to fu…"
James slammed his hand on the counter with enough force to make the bull jump from surprise. James got close to his face, and the look in his eyes was dangerous. Neither saw the light purple eyes looking at them from the open basement door.
“I may not know this woman yet but I will not hear you talk of a woman like that. Now, your going to point me in the right direction before get nasty."
The two glared at one another, each getting to fight before they heard a door opening. They looked at the sound, and James saw a scruffy-looking Doberman woman coming out. She was the first James saw, not in a blouse or skirt. She was in torn-up pants that held tight to her shapely hips, and she had beat-up shirts with holes near her worryingly slim stomach. Her hair was messy and dirty. James saw her arms were also thin. But her eyes were a beautiful shade of purple with just a spark of life left in them. Her coat was dirty, and the light patches had clear signs of dirt and other stains. James looked at her as he stood back up.
“Are you miss Emerald?"
She nodded before she spoke, her voice weak but hopeful.
“Y-yes are you my partner for my time as a chopper plate?"
James nodded with a worried look on his face.
“Yes, we can talk on the way."
Emerald nodded as she walked beside James as he headed for the door. Emerald looked at James, glad someone finally defended her from that bastard bull. Little did either of them know that their lives were about to change for the better.
