Something Borrowed

Chapter 7: The Good Book

The rest of that day was spent honing Aksel's magic. It was rough at first, but soon enough Aksel could draw energy from Stolid without hardly thinking and he could blow up most things from twenty meters away. It was only one spell, but he went from being completely devoid of any magical aptitude to having the sky be the limit! Stolid could provide him power and he could use that energy and manipulate it. Stolid did sit him down to tell him the draw backs of pulling from his energy. Something about the flow of power was directly tied to his number of worshipers, but he didn't pay attention much. He could use magic!

“Are you listening?" Stolid asked as they sat on the edge of the building, Aksel's hooves dangling over the edge.

“Yeah, yeah," Aksel was eyeing his palm, his large muscular hand carved with runes that thrummed with power. “You can't keep it up all the time or whatever. More worshipers means more power and more spells."

“That's the basic gist of it," Stolid wrapped Aksel's hand, the vicious obsidian razers that made his fingers gleaming in the late afternoon sun. “Though I don't like your tone. This kind of shit isn't something to take lightly. Be sure to only use it if you need to. The fewer people that know the better."

“Sure, sure," Aksel waived off Stolid's concerns. “I know what happens to unregistered mages, so don't worry. Our little secret, my dude!"

“Did you…did you just call me 'your dude?'"

“Well, yeah, you're my dude, my guy, my buddy, my pal. Amigos if you will," Aksel chuckled. “I'm just psyched that this is really happening."

“You didn't get this worked up over having thralls that worshiped your dick like a holy idol, but you're over the moon because you can make sparks pop a few feet away? You're an odd buck."

“I don't know man," Aksel ran his fingers through his air. “I just never thought I'd ever be able to do magic, ya know. I mean, sex is fun, and there are plenty of guys who want to get on their knees for dick alone, but magic is a 'you got it or you don't' kind of thing. I never knew it was this simple. Don't other people use magic this way?"

“Yeah, usually they are called sorcerers and pull from a focus, but for the sake of keeping me out of the spotlight, we can simply say you're a wizard and the paperwork was misfiled."

“Seriously dude, this is hella hot," Aksel was grinning ear to ear.

“Hella?" Stolid fingers went limp as though he was putting all his mental energy towards thinking.

“It's like saying something is really cool," Aksel smirked. “I think it's a shortened version of 'hell of a lot' or like 'a fuck ton' where it's a bunch, but in a good way."

“Well, if you're half as good a wizard as you are a dictionary, we have a lot of work to do."

“Come on man, don't fuck up the vibe here," Aksel leaned back, watching the sun halo the skyline. “We're having a good time. Don't get all condescending on me just because I'm excited I can shoot spells now. I'll be a natural spell slinger in no time," Aksel then proceeded to do finger guns and shoot into at the sun with his imaginary spells.

“Whatever makes you happy I suppose," Stolid crept up so he was covering half of Aksel's face, the energy he used to cast spells making him cover a little less, but Aksel didn't notice. They watched the sun together, the radiating light so beautiful as it painted the sky oranges and pinks.

“What's next then?" Stolid asked.

“Huh?"

“What you want after this whole thing is done," Stolid asked again. “You think you'd want to be a sanctioned wizard with the government?"

“You're thinking too far ahead," Aksel smirked and kicked his hooves in the air. “How about we just enjoy the sunset for a moment."

“I don't think I've ever stopped to do that," Stolid pondered. “I guess…I just assumed it would always be there. That blinding and blazing light in the sky."

“Yeah," Aksel took a deep breath, the hint of iron in the air mixed with the smell of sunshine. “It's pretty great."

The two sat there for a moment, basking in the glow of their days work, enjoying the knowledge that neither Ken nor Terry were in any position to enjoy their evening like they were. Stolid made sure. The two sluts were publically posting passive aggressive posts about the other. They never named names, but they were at each other's throats and everyone knew it.

“You know, we never finished that book," Stolid reminded the buck. “You want to read it up here?"

“You gunna go get it?" Aksel cocked a brow.

“What are partners for," Stolid's essence folded and creased into a smile before shooting out of his ring and going down to their open window and snagging the book and snapping it back up into the buck's hand. “Where were we again?"

“When the dude came back after years as a pirate and the bitch remembered him right away."

“So eloquently put," Stolid gave a little jab at the buck before continuing to read.

“Do you really think this is the best idea? Shouldn't we let them stew another day or two?" Aksel asked, the cold air pulling at his breath.

“Trust me, you mortals are all fickle. We need to strike while the iron is hot. Stoke the flames before the two had a chance to mend. You getting cold hooves?"

“No, but one day to stew though? Shouldn't we give it a couple?"

“A couple nights in your rut stink is enough, I'm sure," Stolid encouraged as they rounded the corner to the café where Terry worked. “I take Terry as the kind of slob that keeps his body clean and fit, but doesn't wash his sheets nearly enough."

“Are you even sure he'll be here today?" Aksel asked as they entered the café with a jingle of the customer bell. Sure enough, Terry was right there handing a cup of coffee to a patron. Aksel rolled his eyes. He needn't have asked.

“Hey," Stolid took over their speaking for the moment. Aksel was more than happy to hide away from his ex. “That was an amazing party the other night."

“Yeah, what can I get for you?" Terry was visibly annoyed. His eyes said “I'm done with you," but his hiked tail gave away that he was still interested.

“You doin' okay today, Sweetheart?" Stolid blinked and furrowed his brow with concern. “Still recovering or did something happen?"

“YEAH SOMETHING—" Aksel stopped himself from shouting, clearing his throat. “You slammed the door of my own room in my face."

“Oh shit," Stolid straightened up, his face blushing red, his silicone helpers making his cheeks flush red. “I didn't know that was you. That was your room?"

“Don't play dumb," Terry rolled his eyes and crossed his arms. “You bragged to the people at the party later that you nailed Ken in his roommate's bed."

“Honestly," Stolid scratched the back of his head, his jacket opening to reveal his tank top tight against his chest. “I thought you had more than one roommate."

“I was right there when you shouted at me," Terry was keeping his voice low, but Aksel could tell there was a tantrum brewing.

“I mean, I saw someone in a reddish pink costume," Stolid cocked a brow. “But all the lights were red so I didn't realize. For real dude, I'm sorry. I can get a little…aggressive when I'm in the middle of…doing the do." Stolid shoved his hands in his jacket pockets and gave a beaming smile, though his ears were folded back to fain sympathy.

“Seriously? That's the lame-ass excuse you got?" Terry huffed.

“Believe it or not, but that's the truth," Stolid shrugged. This man was a master manipulator. “Though, I'm really sorry. I didn't hurt you when I slammed the door in your face, did I?"

“I…no, I was far enough away," Terry, the big Great Dane put a hand on his cheek as though he were remembering that night, his blush dusting his brow fur pink.

“I did ask if it was okay with Ken and he said you wouldn't mind," Stolid shrugged. “I can pay to have your sheets cleaned or whatever."

“No, it's no big deal, honestly," Terry was back pedaling. “What'll you have?"

“That chai stuff was amazing," Stolid smirked. “Could tell it had something special in it last time."

“Really?" Terry cocked a brow skeptically, but his tail wagged. “Whatever. Same order as before?"

“You remember?" Stolid cocked a brow.

“No," Terry blushed. “I mean…it's the same order as, like, everyone else. It's a pretty basic order, but not like, basic as in 'yo-basic' but like, it's a regular order…"

“How?" Aksel asked Stolid. “How do you get him spiraling so easily?"

“Watch and learn," Stolid said in their shared mind before continuing. “Don't worry Terry," Stolid smiled warmly. “I tend to find such profound beauty in the mundane, though you give me reason to question that notion."

“Wow," Terry paused, chuckling a little. “You read that book huh? Quoting it too?"

“What can I say," Stolid shrugged. “The author is a word smith. 'With all the gold I've plundered, all the wine I've savored, and of every kind of flesh I've sampled, I can say the simple familiarities of home are the ambrosia of legend. The hay from the bed that I left you last still holds familiar warmth, and beneath Gia's golden hair I found the beats of my heart that stilled upon our parting. Never had I thought myself dead until I was reminded of the agony of your absence.'"

“Impressive, Mister Shakespeare," Terry crossed his arms. “Doesn't he also say at the same time that he is incapable of love until he gets his revenge or whatever?"

“'But the beats of a heart torn are agony,'" Stolid continued the quote through a cocky grin. “'If there be no rest for the wicked, then the wretched hand that cast me in a false name and likeness must know their dues. As much as my heart beats for you, it is also pierced by injustice, and before I find rest in your caress I must first remove the thorn that grew an entire lifetime of thistles between us.'"

“Wow," Terry was obviously impressed. “Do you got a photographic memory or something?"

“Something like that," Stolid shrugged. “I wanted to talk to Ken about it when I bring the book back today. He's working right?"

Instantly Terry's mood soured, his nose turning up. “Yeah, he's working."

“Woah," Stolid put his hands up, the aforementioned book in his hand, he had pulled it from their coat. “Didn't mean to bring the mood down. I just need to return the book to the library."

“Yeah, I just…ugh, never mind. I'm not going to let him ruin my day. I mean…not like you're the one who made sure to fuck him in my room or whatever. He's been rubbing you in my face for a while now." Terry huffed and started angrily typing in their order. “He's been insufferable. I'm sure he won't stop gushing about you tonight when you return his book or whatever."

“I'm a lot to talk about," Stolid shrugged and swiped his card. The register printed off a receipt and Terry handed it over. Stolid made a point of having their thumbs brush, his blunt nail running over the Dane's claw. “Sorry if I started something between you two. The last thing I want to do is stir something up."

“No," Terry blushed and let the receipt flow through his fingers before he blinked and remembered what he was doing. “No, it's not you. He's just been getting on my nerves lately."

“Oh? Why's that?" Stolid had to stifle a grin, forcing his face into something that mirrored genuine sympathy.

“Oh, it's nothing," Terry blushed, his hand waiving away the symbiote's concerns. “It's all personal stuff." Then he turned to go prepare the buck's drink.

“Wait," Aksel started. “I think…I think he's sexually frustrated."

“You sure?" Stolid asked in his mind.

“Yeah…" Aksel looked over his ex closely, memories bubbling to the surface. “He's getting all flustered, his tail is hiked up all the time, he hasn't gotten anything in a long time. I'd have to pile drive him into the mattress several times a day or he'd be chomping at the bit. It's actually how I noticed he was cheating on me. He just stopped…fucking…and he was a lot calmer. No, he hasn't gotten laid in several days and he's itching for it."

“Well, I'll just take a quick glance," Stolid peered into Terry's heart, the flame revealing much of what Aksel said to be true. Stolid had to suppress a dark grin. As their order came up, Stolid took the drink from his hand, but his other hand came to gently cradle the Grate Dane's wrist.

“Hey," Stolid started, his eyes all sultry and his voice deep. “You know, if you want, I can always make it up to you. We could always dirty up Ken's bed."

Terry's eyes went wide, and Stolid simply let go of his wrist and kept his sly smirk on. The Dane's muzzle burned red before he pulled his cap backwards and leaned forward.

“What about Ken?" Terry's eyes narrowed.

“He didn't ask about you when I was stress testing his costume," Stolid shrugged.

There it was, a little chink in his armor, Terry bit the inside of his cheek. It was subtle, but Aksel knew it well. If the Dane were in a different setting, he would pounce on them and drain their nuts.

“Ya know, I have a break in, like, fifteen if you want to enjoy yourself a bit more." Terry licked his chops.

“Holy fuck, are you going to nail him here and now? Shit!"

“Sorry sweetheart," Stolid smirked and showed his book to the big dog. “I got an errand to run."

“Oh come on," Terry murred. “I'm sure I can make it worth the wait."

“I bet you could, but how about we don't do anything rash until things with Ken blow over." Stolid shrugged. “I'll see you around soon, Sweetheart."

Stolid then walked off with his drink.

“What the hell?" Aksel burst out as soon as they left the café. “I thought for sure you were going to nail him to the employee bathroom wall. What gives?"

“Things are starting to get interesting. Just trust me on this, and enjoy your chai on the way to the Library. You're going to need to fuel up before we nail some slutty poodle bussy."
