I'd almost forgotten what just writing a self-indulging idea I could have mindless fun with was like. I'm not sure if this idea will be everyone's cup of tea, but it's been stuck in my head ever since I first beat Metroid Dread. I'm sure I'm not the first macrophile to see Samus' new Metroid power of absorption and go: "But what if it went out of control?"

In this story, I'll explore an alternative ending during the last few minutes of ZDR before it explodes. What if Quiet Robe X had never made it to Samus to allow her to absorb his Thoha genes, thus calming her rampant Metroid metamorphosis?

How far will the most dangerous predator in the galaxy go?

The battle was over. Raven Beak and his malformed X doppelganger were now another tally in a long list of defeated foes. Overflowing thermal energy was steadily causing planet ZDR to destabilize; time was of the essence. Mind racing, heart pounding, lungs burning. Thinking was getting harder by the second. So many remaining questions, so little time. But it didn’t matter. Nothing else mattered.

No time. Use muscle memory. Make it back to the ship. Escape.

“Don’t.” Adam’s synthetized voice rang out in warning. “You’ll drain the ship of its energy.”

An instant of hesitation highlighted the conflict between rational thought and raw predatory instinct which had manifested as a result of the unstable DNA cocktail of a being currently sitting at the Hunter Class ship.

No time. Siphon energy. Become stronger. Evolve.

A green claw-shaped glove trembled above the ship’s controls. Two genes were vying for the authority of one body. Think or consume. In a different time and place, a third option would’ve been possible. In the end, the words which should’ve stopped Samus Aran ultimately fell on deaf ears.

Transfer.

Samus’ palm pressed into the control panel. A familiar tingling spread from her fingertips up her arms before reaching the rest of her red-glowing body. The lights inside of her ship started rapidly flickering as one by one all of the vessel’s components were drained of their nuclear power, metabolized into energy.

Awakened, fiercely dominant Metroid DNA had not only altered the appearance of Samus’ power suit to physically resemble the artificial predators, but also had endowed her with their absorption ability. After draining the floating fortress of Itorash of every last bit of its power, Samus’ own strength had grown exponentially, but so had her newly acquired appetite.

Ever since Itorash, Energy Tank reserves had gone beyond maxed. Samus’ HUD could no longer interpret her own energy readings, data overflowing into several emerging warning pop ups. According to her Metroid Suit, Samus’ vitals were going haywire. She was the one overflowing with energy now. And as the hunter’s ship continued to lose power, the red light around her continued to brighten.

Samus stood up. Pressure from her hand had grown so unbearable that the panel she had touched began to bend under the weight of her grip. Metal slowly warped around her fingers, inevitably cracking and falling apart as the hungry pilot punched her whole arm into the ship’s innards. She groped about desperately, a starved animal diving into the carcass of its prey for juicier meat. A loose coherent thought reminded her that the ship’s reactors were closer to the propulsion, so she left the wrecked panel and without a second thought tore her way into the back.

What remained of the ship’s emergency systems started to blare an alarm as radioactive shielding containment was breached. As Samus stood before the twin fuel rods of her ship, her helmet’s visor became covered in red warning labels. Lethal radioactive exposure. But her Metroid brain didn’t care. While her left claw grabbed one of the rods, she thrusted her arm cannon on the right forwards. Energy began to rapidly flow inside of her.

Itorash had managed to fully awaken Samus to her true power. But the ship’s energy reserves, comparatively smaller as they were, had managed to push her over the point of no return. Her Thoha Chozo genes which were the only thing keeping her Metroid DNA in check had been completely taken over.

Can’t stop. Feels good. More.

_ _

Samus wasn’t using her armaments or propulsion systems. She wasn’t using anything other than her siphoning ability, thus she was expending not an iota of the vast amount of energy she was collecting. With Itorash, all of it had been destined to her transformation. Now, it was happening anew and Samus failed to notice further changes to her biology, overwhelmed with satiety and growing hunger simultaneously as she was.

First, her suit started growing, spreading its green carapace over the smooth black skin-like mesh present on Samus’ neck, back and the sides of her midsection. As the suit finished covering Samus in its armor-like protection, white spines began to shoot out in arcs from her elbows, shoulders and knees, causing the bounty hunter to scream in pain.

All this power! Changing me…!

_ _

The pain had woken Samus up to the reality of what was going on. Thought was no longer being a hundred percent overridden by instinct. Samus was conscious of what was happening to her, but also that the pain was rapidly going away. Not exactly numbed, but converted into something else. The energy pouring inside of her was making her feel pleasure, as if her body was naturally changing the sensation to make the process feel welcomed rather than resisted. But despite how good it was starting to feel, a nameless fear gripped her heart.

Samus’ Metroid Suit was taking over. No, that wasn’t accurate. Her systems had long become integrated with her power suit, with the Metroid vaccine only having managed to properly fuse the two. The suit had always felt like a second skin to Samus, but it was now taking on a more literal meaning. Now that the Metroid DNA had been fully awakened and further empowered, the distinction between suit and wearer was beginning to absolutely blur.

Must stop. Can’t. Feels so good. The ship’s energy. I can taste it. It tastes… good. It’s good! I want more!

_ _

As rampant thoughts continued to wage war in Samus’ brain, the fuel rods were gripped harder, and the energy flowing into the core of her being traveled even faster. Physical change continued as well, this time led by her human biology. Samus’ overall bulk seemed to be increasing, pushing out against her skin. No, her suit. No, her carapace. Samus could no longer feel her flimsy human skin, yet a similar sensation connected her swelling flesh to her hard exterior. She could feel herself expanding, growing larger.

Samus had always been a tall woman, easily towering over the average human in the galaxy even while she wasn’t in her suit. But now as her mass dramatically increased, so too did her already prodigious height. It took little time for her helmet to hit the ceiling of her malfunctioning ship, forcing her to bend her back against it as she continued to feed.

The Amazonian huntress’ bulk was rapidly increasing. Biceps and triceps bulged out against her arms, with quads and hamstrings exploding against her legs. Samus’ shell seemed to perfectly accommodate to her mass, accentuating it rather than blocking sight of it. Well over 9ft. tall by now, she was rapidly being forced to bend and eventually kneel to be able to fit at the depleting reactor room. It was a strangely addictive feeling, but as Samus soon found out, armor and muscle growth weren’t the only changes she was going through.

It didn’t take long for Samus to realize she wasn’t merely staring at her left hand’s claws anymore. She could feel the sharp ends of each claw tip as if they had become fused to her nails; no, they had become her nails. A similar phenomenon occurred on the right where her now fully organic arm-cannon began to alter and give way to her right forearm, mirroring her left and finally allowing her to grip the other fuel rod properly. Samus’ feet morphed, toes fusing together into triplet foot claws that she scraped along the floor of the ship.

A bulge appeared at the back end of Samus’ suit, causing to growl in discomfort. Mass gathered there and grew larger and thicker, eventually growing out and increasing its length until it had crossed back into the ship’s deck. A mixture of ominous fear and wild excitement washed Samus over when she realized she had grown a tail almost as long as she was tall.

Metroid DNA is fully taking over now. It’s going using my suit and all of this energy to force my human side out!

_ _

Samus wished to scream. Her human side was losing the battle. And yet she felt suffocated, as if trapped. She wished to scream, for her humanity was holding the Metroid in her back. Her helmet felt like a prison. It was all she could do to not let go of the fuel rods and tear the damn thing off. But she didn’t have to. As her jaw parted open, so did the chin of the helmet, revealing rows of sharp teeth and excessive salivation where her human mouth used to be.

It wasn’t a scream that left Samus, but a shrill screech. A combination between a monstrous cricket and a deep beastly growl. A Metroid shriek.

Fully drained, space was running out inside of the ship. The bulkier and larger the human Metroid grew, the less resistance the ship’s ceiling offered. It started getting bent outwards as it failed to contain Samus, who even kneeling down filled its halls out. Eventually, the vessel was outgrown, but Samus didn’t wait for it to fall apart around her. With the last bit of energy consumed, she shrieked in frustration and threw her bulky arms around, tearing the ship apart in a fit of anger and hunger.

Climbing out of the destroyed remains of the consumed ship, Samus was now a 15ft. tall monster. Her tail smashed about as if with an angry mind of its own. She arched back, spreading her arms out and roared with all of her might, as if celebrating her newfound freedom. Rage and relief combined into a powerful emotion which gathered at the back of her throat, which glowed a deep pink before Samus let loose the force of her hyper beam, tearing a hole through Hanubia’s clouds. The beam had become so powerful it continued on after breaking past ZDR’s atmosphere.

When the hyper breath finally dissipated, another change showed to have occurred to Samus. Her visor was gone, unclear on whether it had melted or shattered in the commotion. A rounded green snout had replaced Samus’ face, with visibly enlarged teeth that had become razor sharp fangs. One could no longer see a pair of regular eyeballs on her face, but six blood-red compounded eyes on each side of her modified skull.

Samus had become a monstrous yet feminine, anthropomorphic Metroid. The strands of blonde hair belonging to her human form cascaded down over her shoulders and at her back, her locks grown considerably longer than usual. And in spite of how strikingly muscular her physique had developed, her figure had retained and even amplified its natural curvature. Hips now flared out even more, her shelled buttocks sticking out with apparent plumpness. Abs had become marked on her otherwise sinuous waist, with carapace smoother than on her back conforming to her musculature at the front. Samus’ chest had doubled its size, but its change had yet to finalize. Flesh and carapace fused in such a way that they became indistinct as Samus’ breasts pushed out, gaining rounder thickness by the second. In the end, her Metroid mammaries hung over her chest like a pair of red glowing orbs thinly covered by the resulting green membrane.

The creature gasped and panted as if recovering from strenuous physical activity. She was like a newborn, standing atop the remains of Samus Aran’s only means of escape from a planet doomed to destruction. Even though her wild transformation had felt like an eternity, it had taken less than a minute in reality. Hanubia continued to shake and fissure.

All twelve of Samus’ eyes closed. Despair settled in.

What have I done to myself? What have I done to…? Adam! Did I really…?

_ _

Turning back and reopening her eyes to look at the wrecked spaceship, Samus let out a groan. No one could tell how long it was going to be before it all ended. She was going to die here.

All because of this accursed power I never asked for!

_ _

Rage engulfed the human Metroid. Legs bent and she leapt several stories into the air before coming back down crashing into Hanubia at flashing speeds. The ground cratered upon impact, immediately giving way and crumbling apart as Samus shine sparked through. The speed and power of this technique she usually utilized for traversal had become so amazingly enhanced that nothing could stand in her way. Crust, metal, creature; anything that came in contact with her became vaporized from the heat she was producing alone.

If I am going to die here, then I will feast to my heart’s content!

_ _

In her anger, Samus allowed newfound instinct to take the wheel. Multiple areas in Hanubia still conserved precious energy she could go for, but her prize was much bigger than that. ZDR was going to explode because of its overflowing thermal energy. She could feel it around her feet earlier while making her way back to the ship and she could now feel it with greater intensity all around her as she shoulder-bashed her way through the planet’s crust at supersonic speed.

Out of my way.

_ _

Even when an inevitable loss of momentum had left Samus briefly stranded in lower Ferenia, all she had to do was keep her maw open and her hyper breath melted away everything in its way.

She tunneled diagonally down into Cataris with X mimics attempting to flee or foolishly engage their natural predator. But the X might as well have been part of the terrain she was demolishing; Samus didn’t stop to absorb a single one of them.

The best prey was in Cataris. Rather, Cataris itself was the best prey. The sector’s heat had seeped into every other thanks to the ongoing meltdown threatening ZDR. And Samus could feel it. As a fully fledged Metroid, her ability to sense energy sources had become honed far beyond what any manmade sensor could accomplish. Radars paled in comparison to her energy-sense, allowing her to home in to the coveted source as she beamed her way deeper down without actually seeing or even visualizing what she was going for.

But Samus knew. She had crossed that path multiple times during her quest to cure her physical amnesia. The area most well known for connecting eastern Artaria and lower Cataris had been fitted with machinery and devices meant to harness the planet’s natural thermal energy and power all facilities. These devices had been repeatedly damaged in Samus’ ongoing battle with the X plague, and thanks to the energetic imbalance caused by her absorption of Itorash, damage had become irreversible. Cataris was the source of the worldwide meltdown and the energy it was radiating an untold factor beyond what Samus had thus far absorbed.

The saliva drooling out of her maw was instantly becoming vaporized by her hyper breath. The predator hungered.

Planet’s going to explode soon. Hurry. Hungry. So hungry. More.

_ _

There was not a thought spared to anything other than satisfying the insatiable. As a newborn Metroid, Samus’ appetite was as boundless as the universe itself. Her body yearned to continue evolving, to grow bigger and stronger. It was a yearning to take advantage of that ideal marriage of Chozo engineering and the adaptability of the human form to mutate further into a lifeform beyond all. And the unstable Cataris was nothing more than a full-course buffet to Samus.

Hyper breath tore into the bubbling hot lava caverns and Samus closed her maw as she entered through the hole. Magma level had risen noticeably, submerging most of the area under it. The human Metroid landed atop the half-sunk tunnel connecting western Artaria to the elevator access leading up to Cataris proper.

Samus could feel the unbearable heat caressing her hard-shelled exterior, but she was totally unbothered. While not completely invulnerable to extremes, Metroids loved high temperatures. Her evolution had further strengthened that natural affinity, and her refined energy sense let her know exactly where the best concentration of geothermal energy was. Even without her augmented senses, looking across the lava in the direction of all the ruined, smoking and crackling machinery could tell one where the goal was. Samus easily covered that distance with a single bound.

The caverns shared by Artaria and Cataris were violently quaking. Lava splashed around violently around Samus. With little time and patience to spare, she didn’t wait to squat over the ruined collection device. She punched through metal like someone missing a can-opener frustratedly turned their own hands into one. Samus could feel the haywire energy being released by the machinery stuck in a feedback loop. She wanted it all for herself! And she would have it.

Extreme heat seeped into Samus as she pushed her absorption ability to its limit. It burned into her arms and then it burned the rest of her soft insides. But virtually unlimited volumes of already absorbed energy allowed her to body to tend to every major wound or damage done to her organs, repairing them immediately. Pain and pleasure seemed to have turned into exactly the same sensation at this level. As a result, not only did she not become deterred from clawing into the magma itself, Samus was encouraged to in order to get to the bounty of thermal energy.

Once more, Samus’ morphology began to change, but this time it happened at the same time as rampant expansion. Her already gigantic 15ft. frame rapidly began to enlarge as she drank from this seemingly inexhaustible power source. At the same time, the carapace surrounding her body began to bulge out at her back, piling on until she looked like she was carrying the shell of a turtle. At 25ft. tall, every one of her Metroid features became exacerbated. Fangs grew longer, spines multiplied and thickened into sharp, thick spires, even her neck started lengthening, separating her head from her shoulders to eight additional feet on top of her current size. Her tail grew spines all around it, gaining additional girth which allowed it to smash into the ground and dent it as it thrashed about. Experts in the field would have been able to identify the form she had turned into: A Queen Metroid hybrid.

The planet’s geothermal energy was being sapped away at unprecedented rate. Samus couldn’t stop even if she wanted to. Her brain was on automatic, screaming for more of that delicious, spicy energy to enter her. Every last mutating cell in her body demanded it. Surging to 50ft. tall, her muscles and curves grew larger still, turning her into a bulky hourglass of a giant woman. The bigger her breasts became, the more transparently red they got, becoming a pair of titanic sacs acting as a window to her glowing core. Even though the green membrane covering them snapped over and over due to their billowing swell, it kept rebuilding itself like a stubborn top refusing to lose. The Queen was towering over Artaria.

Bigger. More power. Give me more. Need more! BIGGER.

The platform Samus had taken over could soon not support her rapidly increasing weight any longer. Even if by some miracle it wouldn’t collapse, her feet soon slid off into the lake below her. But there was no splash. The area of the lava lake immediately around her had had its heat hopelessly drained, leaving Samus surrounded by hastily cooled, brittle magma. It brought her little pleasure to realize that her once explosive growth had slowed down because of the lack of burning, molten lava. So guided by her instincts, the colossal creature kicked herself up into the air and somersaulted into the lava pool.

Sunk and surrounded by the burning rage of the elements, Samus proved herself to be an even angrier force of nature. Her shriek had evolved into a powerful roar that caused serious bubbling in the lava at the surface level, splashing with geyser-like might. With her greatly improved size, her absorption ability had scaled up considerably. Floating in the pool of lava merely meant she could now feast to her heart’s delight without the need to touch things with her claws.

Soon enough, the lava lake began to darken as its luster faded. But not a moment later, the hardening lava whose thermal energy had been siphoned away began to crumble apart with a 100ft. tall Samus emerging through like some sort of lava demon!

MORE!

_ _

She roared, swinging her arms and tail like a child throwing a tantrum. Every impact carried so much weight that the caverns were devastated, allowing for more lava to flow in. Samus didn’t even wait for it to reach her body. Every hole she created that so much as filtered magma into the cooled off chamber was a viable snack to her in the most literal of senses. Jamming her snout into those holes, Samus drank the flowing lava like it was a pouring of condensed milk. Her core shone the brightest so far as it was bathed in the scorching heat, allowing her to more directly refine its thermal energy into raw power. Every gulp added 10 additional feet to Samus’ height, and every pulse of growth was accompanied by a deliciously rough noise like stretching rubber combined with shifting rocks.

More indeed. Samus was consuming all of Artaria’s and Cataris’ magma, filling out the caverns with her immensity while at the same time unwittingly stabilizing ZDR. The overflow of energy was no longer spreading out to the rest of the planet, since the expanding Samus was taking it all upon herself. And the bigger she got, the easier the process became, allowing her to get even bigger much faster! This vicious cycle empowered her growth spurts, soon making her body smash through the caverns and into Artaria proper. Her tail invaded its halls while her upper body ascended into Cataris, breaking through the hot crust into its sprawling cave network.

There was no stopping the monstrous female. Larger and larger, more and more powerful. With her limbs and mouth working tirelessly in search of more thermal energy to drain, her expansion continued in earnest. 200ft. 400ft. 800ft.! She was doubling in size with every passing minute. Samus was buying herself time without realizing it, but that wasn’t enough for her. Growth had become an addictive sensation she could not and did not want to escape from. But the lava in these sectors had soon become scarce. The buffet had run out.

No more? Impossible. I still HUNGER.

_ _

ZDR’s problem was no longer its structural instability, but the unstoppable beast of a blonde energy-parasite within its innards. Already larger than any one facility on the planet, Samus didn’t look towards Dairon’s paltry power plants or Burenia’s pathetical hydroelectric potential. She was done ascending the planet. Her sights were set below. Deeper than Artaria. Much deeper. Her compound eyes were showing it to her via their energy-sense. Hotter, more powerful than anything else on the planet: ZDR’s core.

Samus began to glow deep purple. From one moment to the next, the over 1,600ft. tall beast went from being immobilized, trapped between sectors, to simply demolishing everything in her path once again. Empowered beyond belief, her new hyper spark allowed Samus to transform her unbridled energy into kinetic force which, when applied to herself, sent her rocketing downwards like the universes’ hugest and most muscular planet cracker. All that mattered to the ravenous Queen Metroid was capturing her prey.

No amount of dense crust could detain Samus. Her evolution had become far too perfect, her natural powers and ability pumped beyond all reason. It was like every obstacle between her and ZDR’s core simply vanished before her. And with amazing speed, she finally breached the innermost mantle, plopping into the leviathanic sphere of pure thermal energy like a pebble falling into the ocean.

Any other creature would have become instantly disintegrated, hopelessly melted into all that molten liquid becoming nothing but the memories of vaporized atoms. But the Metroid Queen had become predation itself. Samus was the apex of the food chain. She was not going to be digested by a planet. The planet would become her morsel instead.

Fire. The spark of life. Metroids had been genetically engineered to siphon away the life of other beings into themselves. There was no larger living being than an entire planet. It was no longer a buffet, but a sea of pure ambrosia Samus had dipped into. Not one species in the observable universe had yet to master how to properly harness the energy of an entire celestial body in a meaningful way. Output beyond the wildest imaginings was pouring inside of Samus, and she opened her maw to let it flow inside through her maw as well.

More! All of it! Fill me up with power! I WANT TO GROW!

_ _

As if responding to her desires, Samus’ already titanic form pushed out in all directions, rapidly exploding in size and taking up whatever space she was liberating by consuming the core. Vibrating and rumbling all over, she quadrupled in size almost instantly, surpassing a mile in height. Her size was multiplying faster and faster by the minute, elevating with every metric ton of lava she consumed. No longer pebble-sized by comparison, she was soon a large rock. Then a huge boulder. Then a massive hill, followed by a looming mountain, and finally, she managed to emerge from the now half-depleted core at the comparable size of a swimmer inside of an Olympic pool.

Samus’ surging arms punched holes into the inner mantle as she ascended against it, but she kept her long neck bent down so that she could continue slurping every last drop of the molten core. Again, she quadrupled her size, rapidly filling out the inside of the planet like a child outgrowing its mother’s womb. Samus was soon going to be reborn once more, only this time as the largest creature to ever have inhabited this galaxy.

Giving no quarter to her prey, the Metroid Queen let out a planet-quaking shriek and cranked her input to maximum. The red aura which pulsed around her continental frame began to expand outwards, creeping out into the mantle and into the rest of ZDR like an all-encompassing, suffocating presence. Every being currently in the world be it machine or X mimic had its life-force instantaneously and forcibly extracted, siphoned into the gargantuan parasite in the center of the planet. Free-floating X parasites had nowhere to hide, their gelatinous, blobby bodies unable to escape the suction pulling them in through solid ground.

In the end, all became sustenance to the Queen, whose final growth spurt became the impending new countdown of destruction for ZDR. As the red aura surrounding it collapsed inwards, the planet rumbled all around as it stopped spinning. While visibly darkening at first, the sphere was soon seen glowing from within. Like an egg cracking from within, ZDR started fissuring all over, splitting at the fractured seams as the growing parasite queen grew bigger and bigger and bigger until eventually it happened…

Samus outgrew ZDR. The planet exploded around her beautiful, curvy bulk, sending debris flying in all directions as the anthropomorphic Queen Metroid stretched and flexed her undeniable power. The lack of atmosphere didn’t bother her. Her body which had fused with her suit’s ability to provide life support in the harshest of conditions would always protect her after all. With the power siphoned from an entire planet, Samus no longer had the limits imposed upon her human, Chozo or Metroid biology; she had truly ascended beyond all three genes present in her DNA sequence.

The apex Queen bulged larger still, expanding until she had more than doubled ZDR’s original size. She had replaced it on the solar system’s axis, and despite numerous other planets and even the Sun were within the purview of her energy-sense, Samus did not go after them immediately. Like a lumbering beast after a grand feast, the largest Metroid that ever lived felt her consciousness slip as her numerous eyelids grew heavy with drowsiness.

Feel full for now. Must… sleep…

“You’ve had a long day, Lady,” a voice echoed inside of Samus. “Who knew you had absorbed the data-transfer ability from the Core-X who took your Varia effect and that you’d use it to upload me to your suit. Our reunion in the BSL station seems like it was so long ago. It looks like it was your turn to save me. But what do we do about all of… this…? They must know. One of them will understand. One of them must.”

Floating in space, the new Queen Metroid, in all likelihood the most powerful being in the universe, slept in peace… for now.

A week later, the Galactic Federation HQ received an e-mail. Its signature was the same one used by the on-board AI of the ship registered to the famous bounty hunter, Aran. Its contents served both as a mission update and a warning. ZDR was no more. Raven Beak’s ploy exposed. X reports confirmed and their presence neutralized. However, the last paragraph was enough to unsettle the boldest of hearts…

THE LAST METROID IS ROAMING FREE. THE GALAXY IS NO LONGER AT PEACE.
