A Short Introduction

Commission for Anonymous

I'd never been much of a party person, myself, but some combination of the “college experience" and my friends' nagging had been enough to convince me. Hell, maybe I'd get lucky.

Or maybe the coyote sitting awkwardly in the corner will be ignored by literally everyone. Again.

Predictably, my friends had left me for the alcohol as soon as we'd arrived at the frat. They probably had the right idea, actually—pretty much everyone was already drunk and it was only… 11:00?

Yeah, this was gonna be a long night if I didn't get blackout drunk. I steeled myself and glanced over at the alcohol table, which was… concerningly unguarded.

Now or never, dude… I stumbled my way between vaguely familiar-looking people, poured myself a cup of watered-down, dollar store beer, and took a sniff. It… didn't really smell like anything, actually, given that the entire place was saturated with fermented yeast. Probably for the better. I took a sip. Delightfully tasteless. People get drunk off of this?

The door flung open, and in came a whole new band of people, screaming and yelling and somehow more drunk than the people having a… pre-orgy or something in the living room. Almost instantly, the room compacted, and I was forced out into a nearby hallway.

I was ferried down the hall as the flood of people made it impossible to find any semblance of elbow room. I looked around frantically—a door to the outside! Maybe some fresh air was what I needed after all.

I dashed for the door and narrowly avoided slamming it behind me. Fresh oxygen hit my lungs like a truck and I gasped for air. Aside from a few couples using the privacy to their advantage, it was relatively unpopulated. I flopped down on a nearby deck chair and set down my cup of off-color water.

“Party too much for you?"

I nearly jumped out of my fur. A purple cat-like creature in a red sweatshirt had materialized in the chair across from me. Had she always been there?

“Yes, I was already sitting here."

Hold up, did she just—

“Yes, yes I did."

Holy fuck.

“Name's Espen. Didn't mean to scare you. In my defense you seem a little out of it." The red gem on her forehead… embedded? In her forehead? Seemed to glow… but it might have just been my imagination.

“You can… read my mind?" I asked.

Espen smiled. “I'm what you'd call an Espeon. We come with psychic powers." The gem sparkled again. It definitely glowed this time, didn't it?

My interest was certainly piqued. “Ps-psychic… powers?"

The Espeon nodded and pointed to the gem in its forehead. “This thing channels the power of the sun and connects with my brain. Lets me do things like read minds, use telekinesis… even a little mind control." She grinned, and the gem seemed to glow brighter this time.

Wait… “B-but the sun…" I almost wanted to glance up at the sky to verify it was still nighttime, and yet… I couldn't seem to look away from that gem.

Espen giggled. “The moon just reflects the sun's light, doesn't it? Besides, I'm a bit like a… solar-powered battery. I've still got plenty of charge…"

The red light from Espen's gem was more than evident now, and almost engulfed my vision. It was as if a filter had been placed over reality. It should have been annoying, to have my color vision taken from me, and yet…

A split-tipped purple cat tail tickled my chin and tapped me on the nose. I just kept staring, and suddenly realized how… pretty Espen was.

“I do tend to have that effect on people, don't I?" The Espeon giggled. “C'mon, cutie. How about we go somewhere a bit more… intimate?"

I just nodded. It was hard to do much else, as the purple cat stood, and I followed.

Maybe a fun night was still ahead.
