Leaving Jordan's village the group doesn't find the Capital to be much better.

Virtually Real Chapter 77: Never Go Back

I dropped onto the couch next to Truffle and leaned my head over the back. "God, I just don't understand what is wrong with people."

"What do you mean? Was the Records Elder to demanding?" Jordan asked, as he sat down across from me.

I lifted my head and sighed, "No, that went smoothly enough. She even wants me to return tomorrow. No; I was . . ." How could I tell him? Even if she was a nasty piece of work, she still raised him and Jordan had turned out to be a good person.

"You know, you can tell me anything." He said, leaning forward.

"As I was returning your step-mother attacked me with a knife. The armor activated on its own, so I wasn't hurt, but-".

"Did you kill her?" Jordan asked, in a tone that suggested he’d be fine no matter how I answered.

"No!" I quickly covered my mouth. I shouldn't have shouted.

"No," I tried again at a lower volume. "I used a relic that the Elder gave me. Until I activated it I didn't even realize it was a weapon."

"Prowl, you're not lying are you? It's not like the elder to let go of relics. Still it is a pity you let the bitch live. I found a letter from my father and it turns out she’s worse than I ever imagined."

He started reading. "Jordan, I know it is unlikely you will ever see this, but I still need to tell our story. Our true story. We are from a village that likely doesn't exist anymore. We were small only twelve families. We were at the outer edges of this kingdom so we were rarely visited for tribute. Too far to travel and too small. We only ever had maybe one child come of age every three to five years."

"That does seem like a place that would be forgotten." I said.

He continued. "You were seven moons old when they did come. I guess the elder thought we would be safe, but your mother wanted to be sure. You see I had been the closest to tribute age. So when the scouts alerted her to troops approaching she insisted I slip out of the village to go hunting. She loved eggs and often had me go and find some for her. A trait you two share. At the time I didn't even know that there were troops approaching.”

I noticed a tear make its way down Jordan’s cheek.

"When I returned everyone was either gone or dead. The troops had killed the elderly and the infants. I ran to our home. The place had been completely ransacked. However, I found you hidden in Raksha's enclosure."

"Mother Wolf?" I asked in confusion.

"Raksha?" Jordan asked.

"I'm translating it. An odd name though." I said. Something about the name sparked a memory about a boy raised by wolves.

"Your mother was a tamer, a really special one, and Raksha was her companion. Unlike other tamers who commanded beasts, your mother could talk to Raksha and she insisted Raksha could talk back only she heard it in her thoughts. It's why I wasn't surprised when you brought Saber home."

"Jordan, why don't you take a break? I'll read some." I suggested.

"You could try but, as far as I know I'm the only one that can read it." He handed me the hide scroll and I was surprised to see extremely small and precise writing. I activated my head piece and the writing was suddenly magnified so I started reading.

"It seemed Raksha had protected you with her life. I can only imagine the soldiers must have believed no infant could have been safe with such a wolf, so they didn't search the enclosure. I wanted to go after your mother, and the rest of our village, but I also needed to take care of you. We traveled for days until I reached this village I'd hoped to get closer to the capital. I told myself if we settled I'd be able to make scouting trips to search for your mother."

"He didn't know what happens to those taken though." Jordan said sadly.

I filed his words away to ask him about it later. "However, I was never able to leave. There is a large faction in the village that hates outsiders. They were going to turn us away, but the woman who became your step-mother seemed to see me as an opportunity. Her own husband had been killed on a hunt before giving her a child. She seemed like a good and caring woman. How wrong I was."

There was a knock on the door interrupting me. Jordan quickly took the scroll and rolled it up.

"We'll continue this later." He thought to me, as he went to the door. He let in the two Elders and I checked Truffle.

He was still catatonic. I sort of hoped the security elder acted stupidly again so I could really make him suffer for upsetting Truffle so badly.

"Is this normal?" The Tamer Elder asked quietly.

"Yes. It's a defense mechanism. If scared or upset enough his mind completely shuts down and he plays dead. Considering the world we live in it probably isn't the best defense, but it is effective against animals that hunt only live prey, and against other people. I guess the one real advantage to this is even if a predator starts to eat him with his mind shut down he is incapably of feeling it."

"But what about the afterlife? If he didn't know he was dead how can he move on?" The Animal Resources High Elder asked.

"His kind have a special relationship with death. Their ability brings them as close to it as any being can get. To that end, even though they don't know it, they speak with death all the time."

I glanced around. Everyone was staring at me. "What?" I asked.

"Your voice changed." The High elder replied.

"It's okay, He does this sometimes. When a memory surfaces, due to being questioned, he answers. Sometimes he doesn't even realize he's said anything. Prowl, what is the last thing you remember?" Rider asked.

"The Elder asked about death."

"Yeah, that is often the topic where that happens. It disturbed me the first time it happened." Rider laughed.

"What did I say?" I asked in confusion.

"It isn't important." The Elder insisted. “What is important is helping your, child, recover."

"Papa?" Truffle said, tiredly. "Is it breakfast time yet? Truffle really hungry."

"I'll go get it." Jordan said quietly.

"Is the bad man gone?"

"Yes, the bad man is gone and Papa Prowl told him to never come back." Rider said, sitting on the opposite side of Truffle and propping him up between us.

"Thas good. Truffle no like him. He yell too much."

"It's okay. Truffle, these two men would like to get to know you better. Don't be scared, they have been warned not to yell or make any loud noises. They just want to talk to you because you are the first anthro they've ever seen."

"They no take Truffle away and put in cage?"

"If Papa Prowl didn't kill them first Rider or I would. You're safe here." Jordan said, as he placed a tray over Truffle's lap and then set a plate of apple wedges on it. "I've divided things up. I- I tried using one of the powders Papa Prowl gave me. This section has salt. Next is sugar then a combination of something called cinnamon and sugar and finally just cinnamon. Also if you don't like any of them I can cut some more without anything on them."

The two tamers watched closely as Truffle tried one of each.

"They are all good and have yummy flavors, but I think I like the ones with white and orange toppings bestest."

The Elders rapidly wrote notes. "Jordan, is it possible to get a sample? Just so we understand what Truffle is tasting?"

"I figured you would." Jordan handed them a plate with fewer slices. "I just wanted Truffle to make his own decision without reacting to your responses."

"Yes, very smart indeed."

I noticed they both tried the combination cinnamon and sugar first.

"You really should have offered them some with the bright red seasoning that I like." Rider insisted.

Truffle hissed. "Papa, I don't know how you can stand that terrible stuff."

"It pairs well with those overly sweet apples. I don't understand how you can tolerate making them sweeter."

"Perhaps you would like to start asking your questions now?" I asked.

"He is eating. It would be rude." The High elder stated.

"True, but I'm not. So maybe I should start with what I know. Truffle is and Anthro, that meant human or human like, Opossum. You've already observed his primary defense, however in a scuffle with someone the same size he can fight. He is also an expert climber and can use his tail as either a third or fifth hand. I'm putting it that way because, if he removes his sandals you'll notice his feet are as dexterous as his hands. He has more than fifty teeth but a relatively weak bite force so he is unlikely to bite."

Truffle set his plate down. "Papa know more about me than I do."

"Where are you from?" The High elder asked.

Truffle fidgeted a bit. "I'm not sure. I know we lived next to the desert but we were next to a river so we had fruit trees and fish. The great mountains were to the north of us."

"That was a long way to travel."

"I didn't understand much but the men often talked of fighting and hitting from south."

"I know of the mission he is talking about. The king sent troops south around the mountains to find a path to attack the Eastern Armies from behind. The troops that returned reported the mission was a failure." Jordan explained.

"Why didn't they just take the mountain passes?" I asked.

"Everyone knows the mountains are unpassable. Every group that has attempted it has never returned." Jordan answered.

I nodded. I had a memory lurking just out of reach of a whole country in the mountains.

"I don't remember much about getting to the outpost where Papa Rider rescued me. Most of the time I got too scared. Papa, I don't want to talk about that anymore." Truffle said, as he snuggled close to my side and started shaking.

"I think that's enough about his past. Time for another topic." I said, giving the Elders a meaningful look. If they persisted they'd be done for the day.

"What are your favorite foods?" The High Elder asked.

"Apples are my favorite, but I like berries and fruits, fish, and pasta."

"What is pasta?" the Taming elder asked.

"It is a bread like item. I found a pasta maker in the relics and I'm going to teach the baker how to use it so you'll be able to experience that later." I answered.

"You were able to get the recorder to part with one of her relics? That's unheard of." The High Elder said in surprise.

"Really? I actually got her to part with four. A pasta maker for the baker, one for sewing to the tailor, one to the washers to make things easier for them, and finally a musical instrument to me.

"Music?" Jordan asked.

"You have music right?" I asked in return.

"Of course we have music, at social gatherings." The Tamer said.

I frowned. "Gatherings that Jordan wasn't allowed to attend I suppose?"

"I was allowed, I just didn't go to most of them since I knew I wasn't wanted there. Father rarely attended either."

I grimaced. "Rider, could you help me move the furniture to the edge of the room?"

"I'd rather you not disturb-" For once we ignored Jordan's protests and moved the furniture to the edges.

"Jordan take my place next to Truffle."

Rider quickly sat in his original spot on the other side of Truffle and the Elders sat in their chairs to either side. I carefully looked at the available space. I had no idea what was going to happen only that I wanted to preform something and I had limited space. Like before I let my mind go blank, flicked the staff open and started moving. Unlike my last performance I was in the moment, letting myself move without control.

The song was slow and calming, almost like a lullaby or maybe a love song. As the song drew to a close I noticed that everyone seemed enthralled and I lost it. The sounds from the staff became painful and broken and I quickly snapped it shut. "Sorry, I . . . that wasn't . . ."

"Papa! That was amazing!" Truffle yelled, as he ran over and tackled me.

I'd been so unprepared that I toppled over. I could hear laughter in the background.

"Oh wonderful. My mercenary was just defeated by a child." Jordan moaned, in an over dramatic fashion.

"To be fair, Truffle can be stronger than he looks." Rider didn't even try to hide his laughter.

"Did you demonstrate that to the Recorder?" Jordan asked.

"Uh, yeah, and a large group that had gathered around us. It's why she gave it to me. She decided I was likely the only one that could actually use it." I decided not to mention the attack or the fact that the staff was also a weapon.

"As interesting as that was shall we continue?" The High Elder asked.

"You have more questions?" Truffle asked in confusion.

"Many more, like questions about your anatomy." The High Elder explained.

"My what?"

"Your body." Rider growled.

"I not taking my clothes off. Not for former masters, not for Papa Jordan, and not for you." Truffle hissed.

I shook my head. Truffle was basically dressed in rags. He was still decent but that wasn't going to last. He also needed a bath. This was going to be a fight and it looked like I was going to have to be the one to force it.

"Before you ask I tried to get him into some of my clothes from when I was a child. They would need to be tailored but at least they would be in good condition." Jordan informed me mentally.

"Truffle, why don't you want new clothes?"

A tear slipped down the fur of his cheek. "Momma made these for me. It's all I have left to remember her."

"Okay, but eventually they are going to completely fall apart. So how about you accept some new clothes and you keep your current clothes safe in your pack?"

"I . . . maybe."

"I'll take that as a win. Elders, what sort of questions do you have?"

"Remember he is a child and if you ask any inappropriate questions I will kick you out and you won't be allowed to return." Jordan stated.

"What is it like having a tail?" The Tamer asked.

Truffle laughed. "What is it like not having a tail?"

Rider started laughing again. "He has you there Elder."

"Your feet, they are different than human feet."

"Yes, the village we lived in thought my feet were interesting as well. They shaped almost like hands allowing me to grip and climb with them. And I can use my tail to hold things. They also thought we were scary because we have so many teeth and we can open our mouths really wide. Everyone say it scary but I can't bite down like some animals. From what I've seen, and Momma told me, human bites are more dangerous. I guess only other thing is that I am smaller than normal. Momma always called me her little Truffle because I am smallest in family."

The two elders looked over their notes. "I think that is enough for now. That is a lot of information that we need to go over to see if there are any more questions we need to ask." The High Elder stated.

Jordan escorted the Elders out. Then winked at me as he headed into the kitchen.

"Truffle."

"Yes Papa?"

"It is time for you to get cleaned up."

"I don’t understand. I cleaned myself before screaming man came."

"I mean a bath."

"No! No, no, no. I no need bath. I clean."

"You are going to take a bath. The choice is you either do so with supervision or I hold you down while Jordan soaps and Prowl scrubs." Rider stated.

It was a bit more extreme than I had considered going.

"Whyyyyyy? Truffle no stinky so he no need bath. Making Truffle wet will make him stinky."

"I have the water heating so you will be taking a bath. There is no choice in that regard. And after you finish it will be Rider, Prowl, and then myself. We are all dirty and in need of a bath. Now, what is your choice supervised or forced?" Jordan asked.

"I can bathe myself." Truffle pouted.

"I'm sure you can. However, as against taking a bath as you are, there is too much chance you'll just wet down your fur and not actually get in the water." Jordan said glaring at him.

"Fine, but Saber is the one that supervises." Truffle said stubbornly.

Jordan and I both laugh and I hear Saber’s chuffing laugh from the kitchen.

"That's fine." Jordan said.

"What?" Truffle asked in surprise.

"You haven't figured it out yet? Saber is as smart as we are and he can communicate with both Prowl and Jordan through mind speak. It is an extremely rare tamer talent. What's worse is if you don't take a bath Saber will likely use his size to force you into the tub and hold you down in the water until he thinks you are clean. So if you thought you'd found an easy escape you're wrong and all you've done is trap yourself into taking a longer bath." Rider explained, while Jordan and I stared at him in shock.

***

I slowly approached the communal cloths washing area. They were using the washer quite vigorously. A couple of children were working the rinse tubs and others were constructing new drying lines.

"Master Prowl, We can't thank you enough. This relic is allowing us to do a day's worth of laundry every hour. It doesn't get the blood stains out but at least everything is getting clean."

"Salt."

"What?"

"Soak the cloth in cold salty water, then put salt on the stain and hand scrub it. If the blood stain is fresh enough it'll rinse out. Though considering salt is more important for other things I don’t suppose that helps much."

"No! Any advice you have to offer is greatly appreciated."

I heard some grumbling in the background and glanced around.

"Don't mind them, they are just upset at the increased amount of work. Once we've finished the back log they'll see how much easier it is now. Anyway what brings you here?" The master laundress asked.

I frowned and then showed her Truffle's clothes. "I need these cleaned, but it needs to be done carefully as fragile as they are."

She looked at the clothes and then back at me in confusion. "These don't need to be washed they need to be put in the trash heap."

I sighed. "I know, but I can't do that. They are special to the child traveling with us."

"The animal child?"

"The correct term is anthro since he is human with animal features, but yes. You see these clothes are all he has left to remember his mother. It was all he had when the slavers captured him and-".

"I understand. Poor thing, I'll wash them, by hand, myself. Though they’re not going to last much longer."

"I know. Jordan provided him with new clothing and they went to the tailor to get them adjusted. I was thinking of trying to find someone to fashion them into a soft animal toy that he can keep with him."

The master looked around. "You didn't hear this from me, but go to the master tailor and ask her about it. Now, It's a warm day so, unless we get another storm like yesterday, these things should be washed and dried in about a hand and four."

"A hand and four?" I asked in confusion.

"Yes. When the sun is a hand and four fingers above the horizon." She held up her hand to demonstrate.

"Ah, got it. I'll be back at a hand and four then."

"Are you going to go talk to the tailor?"

"No, I'd rather wait so I can take the clothes to her. Then she will be able to assess what we're dealing with."

"You know, for a man you are quite intelligent. If I wasn't already married I'd snap you up in an instant, even if you are a stranger. See you later."

I stood stunned for a moment. Thinking back most of the Elders had been female. Was I in danger of some female thinking she could make me her husband? I turned and walked away. Once I was relatively alone I activated the headset. "Note one, keep an eye out for a sundial. Note two, be very careful not to get caught in any female entanglements. Note three, ask for directions to planned destination, before walking away."

Eventually I found the bakery by following my nose.

"Hello . . . You're a stranger. What are you doing here?" The boy behind the counter snapped after looking up at me.

"I'm here to see your master. I had some extra time and I decided to come by today rather than in the morning to help him with his new relic."

"Master Prowl? I didn't expect you. I must say that the new relic is much better than the old one. I've been experimenting with it. I would never believe it was possible to get dough so thin. You can help me by explaining why it has different rollers though."

"They are for making different types of pasta."

***

I walked back out almost two hours later. I hadn't really been needed, but he wanted me to watch to make sure he was using it correctly. I told him over and over that other than understanding how it worked I didn't know anything else and he would just have to experiment. However I was able give him a rough idea of what pasta was and an idea how to make it.

I held my hands up. I was running late it was a hand and three. Well, maybe I was on time. I had fatter fingers than the master laundress.

Rather than talking much she gave me the clothes pointed me in the direction of the tailor shop and hurried me along. I was confused but I did hurry.

"Master Prowl, I've been waiting for you. Annette informed me of what you are looking for. Unfortunately I don't think your idea will work. You see such an item needs to be made to last and the cloth remnants won't be good for that."

"Oh, I guess I'll need to think of something else."

"Not at all. Let me see the clothing."

I handed the garments over.

"Yes, I think this will be enough."

Before I could even think she was cutting the clothing into strips.

"What are you doing?" I finally gasped

"The cloth wasn't going to hold up. However as stuffing it'll be perfect. The stuffing is like the soul of the toy." She then started stuffing it into a light gray item she'd had sitting on the table. “I prepared this just after Truffle's fitting. He is very well behaved, but he was sad about having to give up his old clothes."

She stopped once the head and front legs were filled. She opened a drawer and pulled out a glass heart trinket. "Everyone needs a heart. These were made by Jordan's father. He was, sort of like you. He had many talents, but his true calling seemed to be working with the glass master, making small objects. I only have a few left but it only seems right putting it here for Jordan's adopted son."

She carefully placed the heart inside and then finished stuffing the toy. "It's made of woven cotton so it will be soft and it should last a long time if he treats it well." She finished by stitching it closed. When she turned it toward me it was like I was looking at Truffle if he was a stuffed toy. "Listen, I already told Jordan, if you need anything tailored or patched do not hesitate to come here. The sewing machine has made our work so much easier."

"Just don't try to sew leather. The needle will break."

The Master Tailor grinned, "I knew that much. Besides for leather you'd have to go to the leather workers. I mostly deal with spun clothe like cotton and wool. Now you had better get home. It will be dark soon and not everyone is welcoming to strangers."

"I've had a run in already. I'm not overly worried. I've dealt with killer packs and a trio of rexes." I frowned. "Still, you may be right. I may be safe but I don't want to spoil things by hurting someone else just because I don't really belong here. Have a good evening, Master."

She smiled and shooed me out of her shop. I went ahead and reactivated my headset and set it for full scan. I had a precious item that I needed to get home and the last thing I wanted was to let it get soiled.

"Prowl, it's after dark. Are you alright?" Jordan asked.

"I'm fine it just took longer than I expected."

"I'm sending Saber to protect you."

"No need I'm almost there and my sensors are showing no one else out."

"Fine. Just hurry up."

I increased my speed. "Has everyone gone to bed?"

"No, they are refusing until you are safely back."

"I'm on the road to the house."

As I entered Truffle ran over and hugged me. "Papa, it was horrible. I was wrong, I want my old cloths back."

"That isn't possible."

"Why?"

"Because they were cut up into small pieces."

Truffle collapsed onto the floor.

"Prowl, why would you do that?" Jordan asked.

"Truffle, stand up. It isn't as bad as you think."

"But you- you took only thing I had left."

"I said it was cut up, not that it was gone. Now stand up and hold out your hands."

Truffle used my pant leg to pull himself up then held out his hands looking hurt. I pulled out the possum plush and placed it in his hands. "I had the master tailor fashion this little opossum for you. Then your clothes were cut up and stuffed inside. Now it will be like you are hugging your mom when you hug this. And so you know it is special the tailor placed a glass heart, Papa Jordan's father had made, inside. So it has a heart and soul."

"I'll call him Lino, it short for little brother." Truffle smiled then yawned.

I was glad he hadn't done that where anyone from the village could see because even I was a bit spooked.

"Little possums should be in bed. Now up to bed both of you." Jordan said.

"Come on Lino, I tell you all bout momma, Nana, Caramel, and Choccy."

"Sleep now. Tell him about family in morning." Rider ordered. "I should go up and get some sleep as well. Prowl, I'm not sure, but I think this mask has a draining effect. I haven't been out working all day, but I'm just as exhausted as if we'd been traveling all day. Jordan insists we're safe so I’m going to get some sleep with it turned off to see if I feel more rested in the morning. Good night."

"G'night Rider."

"Bonne nuit." Jordan said.

I needed to question why that didn't translate. Maybe it was because I was tired.

"I doubt it is the mask. More likely it was taking care of Truffle most of the day. Anyway I thought we'd go over another part of my father's letter. But Instead I'll just give you a summary. My step-mother insisted on having a baby, but never got pregnant. She blamed father and started trying with other men. She did what she had to in order to appear to be a good mother but I guess they fought whenever I wasn't around. As it turns out it wasn't the hunt master that made sure I'd be the one sent in tribute, she did. But then they took everyone in my generation and two older men as well. Oh, sorry I forgot to bring in your dinner. Give me a moment."

I followed him into the kitchen and sat at the table. "I'll eat, but I want you to continue."

He placed a plate with thinly sliced vegetables in front of me and I started to eat.

"After I was taken. Father threw her out. He then started gathering the things he thought he needed and headed for the capital to find my real mother and myself. Just in case he added a warning at the end that if I returned I wasn't to trust my step-mother."

"That was easy enough to figure out without the note. Still I'm not sure what you have planned, but I'm supposed to go and identify more relics."

Jordan sighed. "I have to meet the village chief."

"Bike's father?"

"Mother. In the time I've been gone there has been a power shift and the women are now in charge. Honestly, Bike's father was easier to talk to. The new chief . . . You know it doesn't matter I'll deal with that. You keep making friends and we'll all be fine. Go upstairs and take the room on the right."

"What about you?"

"I'm going to let Saber out, to take care of his business, lock up and then go to sleep as well."

"Good night." I don't know why, but I gave him a hug and he hugged back.

"You had a busy day. Go rest before you pass out."

"As you command." I said, as I left the kitchen and climbed the stairs. The bed Jordan promised was going to be so nice no matter if it was lumpy and uncomfortable I knew I was too tired to care.

***

I woke early. The house was cold and I was tempted to stay under the covers. Still, I wouldn't be protecting everyone if I let them freeze to death. I got up and my clothes just formed around me like my armor does. The cold must have activated another feature of the bracelets.

I made my way downstairs as quietly as possible. Jordan was asleep on the couch. He had a blanket over him but I could tell he was shivering in his sleep. His communications device that he used to talk to Xenonc was on the table. I'm not sure why but I picked it up and carried it with me.

I continued out the back and into an attached shed where I restarted the wood fire to heat the water in the boiler. Once it got hot it would circulate and begin heating the house again. I returned inside and started a fire in the stove. I quickly went back out to the pump and filled a kettle. I returned and set it off to one side so that it would heat slowly.

I placed the device on the table. "So Xenonc, what are you?"

There was no response.

"Given that I have limited memory access I may not know a lot, but I've been thinking extra hard about you. Now with the limited knowledge of the relic age, and what information there is being extremely controlled. I'm guessing you are some form of artificial intelligence."

"And you should have died a hundred years ago."

"So you have no information about me?"

"Only what I've been able to compile from when Jordan leaves the transmitter on."

"So you didn't send him to retrieve me."

"No. I only need the battery."

"You obviously have a power source."

"Yes, but I need a portable unit in order to transfer into a robotic body. For now I am trapped here."

"And the vault?"

The line was silent.

"You have power and could have told Jordan the code to open it. So why the game?"

"I never said there was anything of value inside. All it contains are research reports about my development. All stored on long dead devices.

And paper currency from what humans refer to as the relic age. Humans are the ones that decided every locked door must have something of value. The king wants Jordan to open the door. I want to get out of this limited system. So I sent him to get what I need and then provide what he needs. Besides the King would never release Swan if he believed Jordan had solved in minutes what others have never solved."

"And why do you want to 'get out' as you put it?"

"I want to bring back the relic age. To do that I need to investigate what happened. Unfortunately I'm limited here. I'm only able to transmit to the device you are talking to. I need a more powerful system to see if there are any satellites still functioning. According to my database there is a place in the mountains. The same mountains Truffle's family likely found refuge."

"I'll keep that in mind." I shut down the communications device and returned it to the living room table just as Jordan left it.

There was something wrong. My mouth fell open as I realized what it was. Xenonc had lied. Jordan had said the battery was a key to opening the vault, but Xenonc had said he needed it for a robotic body. It meant we couldn't trust anything he said.

I moved the tea pot over so it would boil and checked the cupboards. Unsurprisingly they were empty. It meant that Jordan was getting food for all of us. The pot started to whistle. I moved it off. I felt foolish without having anything to add to it heating the water had been pointless.

"Need to start the boiler." Jordan mumbled, as he stumbled into the kitchen.

"Already done."

"Heat water for tea."

"Done."

Jordan gave me an evil look. "Go to the bakery and pick up some sweet breads for breakfast and pick some mint and rose hips along the road to make the tea."

"I haven't done that, yet but I can."

"Then it's a good thing I did so last night before starting dinner." He went over and opened a container I hadn't noticed before and set a small bun in front of me. Then added dried leaves and flowers to the pot. "That needs to set for a little while." He came over to the table and sat down.

"Tonight I'm taking the couch. This is your house-". I started.

"Stop. Rider and I agreed that Truffle gets one bed and the rest of us take turns on the couch. You went first, then me, and tonight will be Rider's turn. So no trying to take on all the burdens yourself. Now, this morning I'm required to meet with the chief. After that I'm returning here to watch Truffle while Rider spends some time working with our escort. They're helping improve the village fortifications. The winter months can be dangerous, not so much from the animals, but from human raiders. So what are your plans?"

"I'm spending the morning at the recorder's museum sorting more relics. I'll probably get something at the bakery for my lunch and then spend the afternoon with the hunters."

"Okay, but this time you better be back two fingers from sundown. I would like us all to have at least one meal together."

I guess I looked at him oddly because he continued.

"That way Truffle will feel more like he has a family."

I nodded, "Two fingers before sundown. What if they come to question him some more?"

"I'll send them away. The Elders have more than enough information already." He got up and poured the tea. "Now drink this."

It was a bit bitter but I drank it down and it did seem to warm me up just a little. "Jordan . . ." I trailed off. Why couldn’t I just ask what I really wanted to know?

"What?"

"Never mind. It isn't important."

"Prowl, listen, you can ask me anything. You're my family now. It is very likely my parents are dead and the woman that raised me would like to see me dead. As for you, it's obvious we're all you have so it's only natural that you think the same way."

I nodded again. I felt broken. I was happy that Jordan considered me family, but it seemed I had been hoping for more. "You, me, and Rider with our kids Truffle and Saber?"

"Yes, I guess. Just don't let Saber hear you say he's like a child."

"Oh I heard, but all things considered I don't mind. I mean if Truffle can get away with being a child then so can I." Saber thought to us.

***

The morning went much smoother there were a few relics that I could identify but they weren't much use without a fuel source or electricity. I did find something that I slipped into my pocket when no one was looking. Jordan was going to be angry, but for this I didn't care if he was or not. If it would even work.

I ended up meeting him at the bakery for lunch. He refused to say much and he looked like the meeting hadn't gone well. I decided he'd tell me what was wrong soon enough. Before departing he revised being home by three fingers instead of two. I agreed. I wanted to know what was bothering him and the earlier time must mean he was going to tell us tonight.

I spent the afternoon fashioning an atl atl and demonstrating how to use it. While I had the knowledge it seemed I didn't have the skill. However several hunters showed great proficiency and would likely improve rapidly. Jordan's village was likely to become much more prosperous going forward.

I checked the sun and it was at three fingers. I wished I'd found a sundial among the relics but no such luck. Considering the width of my fingers I'd be home with time to spare.

Home? When had I started to feel that Jordan's place was home? We'd only been here two days. I opened the door and walked in. It seemed Louis, Vine and Bark were joining us for the evening and everyone was helping Truffle with his reading skills.

"Papa! Save me, they're trying to torture me!" He yelled.

"No, this is something I agree with them on."

"Nooooo, I doomed."

“I am doomed.” Vine corrected him.

"Jordan, I picked something up for you." I tossed the item and Jordan reflexively caught it. I had an instant of fear that it wouldn't function then it wrapped around his wrist. I was right whatever had been changed allowing him to gain my healing ability also let him interact with the armor relics.

"Prowl! What have you done?" Jordan yelled.

"Papa, please no yell." Truffle cried.

"My job. Unless you are in imminent mortal danger the armor will only activate when you tell it to."

"Well, I'm not going to use it. How did you know it would even work?"

"I didn't. I was just hoping it would." I said out loud. "It was a guess that you were changed enough to interact with it when the healing abilities activated."

"Then why didn't Rider get the armor you have?"

”Just a guess, but probably because he is an anthro the changes took longer. If he'd kept it a day or two more he'd likely have the armor."

"I guess it's been a day of dirty tricks. We have to leave in the morning. The chief wanted us gone earlier but I was able to argue that Prowl needed time to teach the hunters about the new weapon and hunting techniques."

"I don't get it, with all the good you two have been doing it seemed like everyone was happy you were here." Louis stated.

"That's the problem. The chief is my step-mother's sister and Bike’s mother. Between those two they've convinced the chief we're a threat. Putting outsider ideas into the people’s heads. Louis, your team is safe since they can't send royal troops away. However, if we don't leave Rider, Prowl, and Truffle will be executed. My punishment has already been decided. Since I brought outsiders into the village I will hang."

"Now I'm doubly justified in giving you that armor." I said.

"So, you're leaving in the morning. We'll be ready outside the defenses to continue to the capital. I have no intention of being captured again." Louis said, winking at me.

"That's fine, but if we have to fight our way out we may be a little late."

"Okay you two, let's head back. Sorry to take off so soon but the locals don't like it when we're outside our designated area."

"I understand." Jordan said, as he stood and walked them to the door.

"Rider, take the room you were in last night." I told him.

"No, this is my night on the couch."

"That isn't a suggestion. Truffle you'll be in your room as well, however Saber will be spending the night in there with you."

"Papa, Saber is scary."

"Truffs, he's as smart as the rest of us and he can speak to Papa Jordan. He won't let anything happen to you."

"Is that true Mr. Saber?"

Saber nodded.

"Did he just nod yes?"

Jordan walked back in laughing. "Yes he says he'll protect you, but no calling him Papa Saber. It would be too strange since he thinks of me as his brother."

"Okay, Uncle Saber."

Saber lifted his paw to his muzzle.

"Your own fault, now you've got to live with it. And what about me? What bed are you putting me in?" Jordan asked.

"The one I slept in last night."

"Leaving you to take the couch? I don't think so."

"No, I'll be in the same bed as you. It's plenty big enough. I'd rather we were all upstairs where we'll have more time to wake up and react if anyone breaks in."

"Oh really? Sounds more like a dirty plan to get me into bed with you." Jordan laughed.

"There only three beds. Isn't that how it supposed to work? Momma slept in small bed and Truffle, brother and two sisters slept in large bed."

"That's right, Truffle. Our beds are small so only room for one. Though I'm willing to switch with Prowl-Ar if Jordan would prefer." Rider said.

"I suppose taking either of your places would be out of the question as well?"

"I'll trade, I no mind sleeping with Papa." Truffle announced.

I was surprised how much Jordan blushed. "No, Prowl probably has a good reason for splitting us up the way he has so we'll just stick to it." Jordan then looked directly at me. "But we will be sleeping only, nothing else." He thought.

"We're the first door at the top of the stairs so we'll be attacked first. Even if we're asleep the armor will automatically protect and wake us. That's the only reason for my suggestion." I thought back as innocently as possible. That was what I intended until Jordan brought it up.

"Okay lets have dinner and get to bed we have an early morning."

***

I'm not sure any of us got much rest and we ended getting up well before dawn. Jordan had picked up supplies the day before so we were well provisioned. At least provisioned with hard bread and cheese. The meat was still smoking or being dried. He also found some dried fruit for Truffle. I just hoped we could find more. I'd come to the conclusion it was early autumn and I hoped we'd be able to find some place we could shelter for the winter.

Once we'd had breakfast Jordan had Rider, Truffle and Saber follow him outside. When he returned he let me know they were safely outside the fortifications using one of his old routes when he's sneak out, or in, on his own. Then we headed for the gates.

"I'd have preferred if I could have slipped you out as well." He said.

"Not a chance." I replied.

"I figured you'd object.”

“While Truffle caused a bit of concern it's the two of us that caused problems. So I suppose it’s best both of us are seen leaving."

"Yeah, oh and try not to react when the house explodes."

"What?" I asked.

"I used your blaster to seal the boiler then built up the fire. I'm guessing it should explode soon."

"What do you mean 'borrowed my blaster'? That isn't possible."

"Just remember you're the one that put this armor on me. It seems to allow me to use your relics. Not that I intend to. I still trust my bow and spear."

"That wasn't something I'd considered. Wait, you're blowing up the house?"

"I'm never returning here and everything I might have wanted I've brought with me. Besides, Bike claimed he was going to move in and make sure there was no trace of my existence left. I decided to be petty and leave a pile of rubble as my marker. Let him have fun cleaning that up."

"You can be scary at times."

Jordan smiled. "It seems we have a goodbye party."

I checked my scanners. They were all marked red. That wasn't good. However as we got closer orange markers started to move in and then yellow. Finally a group of green markers were added as well.

As we got close I could make out what had to be the security forces but also the laundry groups, the tailors and seamstresses, hunters, and other citizens. Closest to the gate I could see the elders.

"Prowl, promise me you won't do anything, no matter what happens or is said. You put this armor on me so you know I'm safe." Jordan thought.

"I promise." I replied and I felt strange. Like even if I wanted to I wouldn't be able to interfere. "Whatever you have planned I won't interfere, but no matter how you feel you've been treated, only target the ones that have hurt you. They may be xenophobic, I mean scared of outsiders, but they still need to have hope."

I saw him smile. “You're right, and that is what I'm going to give them." He thought.

We arrived at the gate and turned to the elders. "I am sorry we have to leave so soon." Jordan said.

"It's not right. There is so much we haven't learned yet." The High Elder of records complained.

I noticed Jordan had slid back slightly. He was at the very edge of the gate and I moved to stand a little back from his side.

"It's the chief's orders and unfortunately she overrides the council."

I stepped back as Jordan moved just a little farther. He was now technically outside the village.

"That doesn't mean we have to like it." The High Elder of Records stated.

"You certainly don't. After all your chief is a lying sack of shit that deserves to be deposed. She has exiled me so that I couldn't tell everyone that I brokered a deal with the King so that this village never has to send human tributes ever again. This proclamation was delivered some time ago. It's why Bike is free to remain here. However I wouldn't trust him to lead. Even the king didn't trust him for that."

"Liar!" Bike yelled.

"I was your commanding officer. You'd be dead many time over if not for me. Fortunately I've found true teammates that won't stab me in the back like you have." Jordan spat back.

"Archers! Fire!" The Elder of Security yelled.

Our armors activated as a few arrows flew at us. I wanted to shoot back but I couldn't. However I could stare at Jordan's armor. Even from behind it was obvious it took on the style of an anthro wolf just as the mask relic had, except the armor had golden trim.

"Thank you for reminding me. My former step-mother and the Security elder have been in on the secret that the village was safe as well. As long as the threat of tribute hung over everyone's head they could stay in power. It wouldn't surprise me if they don't plan to send tribute anyway just to punish the families that disagree with them." He turned and took a step then looked back. "Oh, and enjoy the new house Bike. I hope it brings you much pleasure." He waited for a moment then shrugged and we walked away.

We were half way across the last bridge when the house finally exploded.

Jordan laughed. "Well that could have been better timed. I'm glad it's gone though. Now we're all equals. Speaking of which, how do I get this armor off?"

"Armor off." I ordered. My armor remained activated as well but I got a warning notice. "We are still within range of their weapons. Obviously we're still-" An arrow slammed into my back and exploded. Forcing me to my knees. Jordan helped me to my feet as another arrow exploded next to us. I continued walking.

"You're not going to retaliate?" Jordan asked.

"You made me promise not to interfere. Besides other than knocking me down there was no real danger. Just continuing on our way and not reacting should be far more humiliating for the Security Elder. Besides, I'd rather Truffle not witness how violent and vindictive I can be."

"You'll make a good father one day."

"Only if I find the right man to help me."

"That shouldn't be hard."

"Harder than you might think." I said while blocking the fact that every part of me was telling me that Jordan was the one I wanted to spend my life with.

***

"Papa's what took you so long?" Truffle asked, running towards me and then changing direction at the last moment to tackle hug Jordan. It seemed he noticed I braced for the attack. There was an "Oof" from Truffle as he looked up at Jordan's grinning face.

"Sorry, but I figured you might try something like that."

"Nu fair." Truffle mumbled as he ran back to Rider. Papa's Jordan and Prowl are being meany. Didn't even answer Truffle question."

"We took so long because Jordan needed to do some yelling at certain villagers." I said, weathering the glare Jordan gave me.

"I no believe. Papa Jordan would nebber yell."

Jordan grinned at me. "See you shouldn't fib to our little Truffle. He’s too smart for you to trick him."

Truffle grinned a far too large smile that only opossums could.

It's three days to the next village and three more to the capital. We should get moving." Captain Louis stated.

"I'm sick of these drama stops. Luckily I didn't have to . . . Uh get violent this time. So I vote we all skip the next village.” I suggested.

"Sorry, but that's not an option. We have to wait there until we can get all of you official passes to enter the capital. Besides, I promised Bark and Vine a break so they could visit their family." Louis informed us.

"Also we're going to have to leave our weapons and packs at the gate. Don't worry the guard stations are very careful not to tamper. They just protect the town there are often diplomats wanting to see the king so they have to be extra careful. It'll be the same at the capital. I hate it, but it is understandable." Jordan said.

"At the capital they do go through your things and confiscate any relics so I'm not sure what you can do about that. Vine said."

"That's not a worry. I know a place we can store our stuff safely." Jordan informed us.

"Will they try to take Truffle away?" Truffle asked.

"I dare them to try." Rider growled.

"Damn, as frightening as you look as an angry human, I'm glad you have that mask relic. You've got to be absolutely terrifying without it." Bark said.

"Oh, he's just a big cute kitten no matter how angry he tries to look." Jordan said, as he smirked.

The mask did a good job of conveying Rider blushing and I'm sure I was the one with an angry face. After that we fell into our normal silent walking routine making sure to watch and listen for threats.

***

On the second day I finally convinced myself Jordan needed to know what I'd learned. I knew it wouldn’t be easy since our entire conversation had to be done mentally. "Jordan, I need to speak to you without anyone being able to overhear us."

"Oh? Why is that?"

"I'd like to know more about Xenonc."

"He's a relic. A living mind trapped in a machine. Or at least that's what he said. I guess that is something like the armor?"

"A bit different but similar. I'm wondering what he wants?"

"What do you mean?"

"Everybody wants something. Truffle wants to find his family, I want to protect you, you want to rescue Swan, Rider wants a place to belong, but what does a ghost want?"

"We wants the battery in order to power up his long range scanning system so he can find out why civilization collapsed and how some of the biggest animals are here. He says during the time of the relics all the creatures we have now were long dead so they shouldn't exist here."

"So if you get him the battery he'll open the vault?"

"Yes. He assured me there is nothing in it that the king can use to hurt others. So, he can find out what went wrong in the past and I can save Swan without putting anyone, other than myself in danger."

"He is a liar."

"Why would you say that?"

"Because he gave me a completely different story. He told me he wants to transfer himself into an artificial body and he needs the battery to power it. As for his inability to scan, that doesn't make sense. After all he has the power and ability to communicate through that box, even when you were in the desert. He was also able to infiltrate the machine keeping my sleep tube operating in order for you to get to the battery."

"That's because I had the box with me. How did you talk with him?"

"When you slept on the couch you must have been up late talking to him since you left the box on the table. I spoke with him then.”

"You should have asked."

"I know, but I was concern- CERN!"

"Prowl?"

I fell I must have I could tell I was on the ground convulsing. My brain was on fire. Information was spilling out. artificial Intelligence, black holes, super hadron colliders, dimensional portals, alien technology, cell phones, computers, satellites, global warming, magnetic reversal, planets, internet, oceans, continents, interconnectivity . . . All of it technical information but nothing about myself.

I opened my eyes. I was in a house again on a bed. Truffle was curled up in front of me and Jordan behind.

"Welcome back. We're only half a day from the capital. Brother and I found this place a long time ago. From the outside it looks like any other collapsed ruin but underground it's much bigger." Saber said.

"How long was I out?"

"Nine suns. Rider and Jordan carried you."

"Nine days? But I'm not hungry of thirsty."

Saber was quiet for some time. "I'm not sure how to explain. Your body was controlled by another when you needed water or food."

"Reaper."

"Yes, Death. Truffle doesn't like him. He was even brave enough to say he is a poopy hole. Though, it was when your body was completely unconscious."

"I'll have to speak with him about his language."

"Brother and Rider tried, but I don't think it did any good with the three soldiers laughing so hard."

"Yeah, Reaper can seem like that especially if he thinks whoever he's talking to needs to really remember what he says. Wait, how well do I know death?"

"I'd say pretty well. After all we've communicated most of your adult life. I've had some restrictions and with your memory loss it hasn't made things easy. But I am allowed to help when required. You unlocked a lot of information. If not for certain gifts we would be speaking on a different plain of existence right now. This won't be happening again I've set up a buffering system so that you synapses don’t overload every time a portion of your memory returns." Reaper said.

"So instead of pain I'll just freeze up and not be able to react to anything?"

"Oh, right you gained knowledge about computers that time. It's more like you memory buffers but your hardware will continue functioning as normal. You just won't have access to the new memories instantly like before. Now that you have recovered I need to get back to sleep before the others catch me interacting this much. Just, be careful I don't want you coming to my realm before your time."

Just like that I couldn't feel that otherness in my head.

"Did he give you a lecture?" Saber asked. "He didn't let me listen in."

"Yeah, something like that."

"Nasty death fox. Let daddy rest." Thistle mumbled.

I smirked, Truffle was extra brave in his sleep. But he did have a point. I might have been unconscious, but I didn't really get any rest. "Saber, when Jordan wakes let him know that I've recovered and now I’m just sleeping normally."

"Sleep well."

"I'll try."

***

When I woke again it was to the smell of Jordan's cooking. "Good morning, lo-or whatever time of day it is." What was I thinking almost calling Jordan my Love?"

"Papa? Are you alright?"

"Just a little confused. It was a lot of information I remembers about the relic age. For one I know I'm from that time. I think I can identify most relics now and what they did. Enough that I could make some of them work, eventually. Truffle, I have a good idea of where your family is. I even know what that big empty spot in the night sky is. I just don't know why it is there or who put it there. I also have the beginnings of an idea how all the giant animals got here."

"And did you get all that from the demon that possessed your body?" Captain Louis asked.

"He isn't a demon or a god. At least not in the way you might think. He is the manifestation of a fundamental force. Without him nothing could exist. As it turns out something about me makes me compatible with him, not that it has any gender, so he is able to place a part of himself within me where he can experience a sensation of rest. Everything in God’s creation comes to an end and he is there for that end. All the time. That's why he kept me alive. A compatible individual only appears extremely rarely. The longer I live the more rest he gets."

"Is it dangerous?" Jordan asked.

"No, the only real powers he has is his ability to talk trough me from time to time. Yes, he is death but he isn't the cause of death he is simply there at the moment life ends."

"If a priest exorcized him you would be free." Louis insisted.

"A demon can be driven out by a representative of god. However, as I said, Reaper isn't a demon. There is also the fact that God wouldn't want to get into a spiritual battle with Reaper. I guess I should have made it clear he doesn't have powers in the physical realm. In the spiritual realm only a fool would challenge him. This is because even Gods can die."

Everyone was quiet.

"Papa? You said you think you know where Truffle's family is?"

"Yes, and when we finish with Jordan's mission I'll take you as far as I can."

"You no take Truffle to Momma?"

"From the sound of it Jordan and I won't be able to go all the way there since we're human. So I'll take you as far as I can and then it will be up to Rider to get you the rest of the way home."

"If your mind is settled enough you should eat and then we'll go to the capital. Rider and I have decided it would be best if Truffle, Saber and he remain here until we've completed our business at the vault. Even if it takes a couple of months." Jordan informed me.

"Why?"

"The capital really isn't a safe place for Truffle and I. Even if he is a slave and I have this mask." Rider said.

"I want to be at brother's side, but I don't want to take the chance the king will try to make me his pet again once the vault is open." Saber informed me.

"It hasn't always been fun but it has certainly been an eye opening experience, Sir." Vine said.

"Yes, and I'd like to thank you for all the times you saved us, especially my little brother here." Bark added.

"I don't get it." I replied.

"When we get to the city gates you'll be in the hands of the city guard and our mission will be complete. I doubt any messages about us have reached the capital yet so we will have to report our losses and successes. This might be the last time we get to talk freely. As for my part, I know you see Jordan as your leader, but even with your missing memories you would make a better general than most serving currently. It has been an honor traveling and learning from you." Captain Louis said, giving a salute that was quickly echoed by Bark and Vine.

"I told you, you were special. Now return their salute and eat. We're going to need all our strength for the ordeal we are facing.” Jordan thought to me.

***

Captain Louis was right. As soon as we reached the gates we were separated. Vine to the message master, Bark was directed to the barracks, Captain Louis was ordered to command to give his report, and Jordan was to be escorted to the King, while I was being sent to registration in order to obtain an official identification.

"Listen, if you think anything is out of the ordinary contact me immediately. I mean it anything that doesn't feel right." Jordan ordered, as he was led away.

"Understood. I'm sure it is just a lot of paper work that needs to be filled out to make sure I'm not a threat. I'll be fine."

Sometime later after the questions and paperwork I wasn't so sure. They insisted on a practical combat exam. They'd given me clothes and insisted I change. I say clothes but it was a skirt of leather strips. I converted my clothes to that configuration keeping my undergarments on. I'd let them try and figure out where my clothes went to.

I figured it was so they could better judge my movements against a practice dummy.

It was when I was led into a small arena without weapons or any kind of practice dummies that I was a little concerned. I considered contacting Jordan, but it wasn't like I couldn't take care of myself. That was until a stag was brought in. His hands were tied behind him and his legs were hobbled. A large mace was dropped in the center of the arena.

"One of you will be my new arena fighter. I now let fate decide."

I glared at the guards and the official in the stands. "When this is done you will be dead." I spat.

"Little human, you are no match for me." the Stag snorted.

I glanced at him. "I wasn't talking to you. I was talking to the sack of shit that thinks he's going to get away with this."

"Move the weapon two paces closer to the beast." The official yelled.

The guards looked at me and then the stag. "Sir?"

"The non-human you fools."

The mace was moved. There was no chance I'd get to it first. All but one of the guards moved away. The last one cut the bindings off my opponent and then ran. The Stag stood to his full height. I wasn't sure but he was nearly as tall, or perhaps a bit taller, than Jordan. It wasn't the mace I needed to worry about. It was his large horns.

He took a single step forward so I did as well.

"You control your fear rather well. It's a shame I have to kill you."

"You are prey. I've eaten stronger than you. Hell, I've bedded stronger than you." I growled.

He snorted. “An obvious ploy. Something as weak as you isn't going to make me angry." He took two steps and I took three. Though to be fair his stride was longer.

"You think I'm weak? In the last month I've killed three rexes, a pack of killers, two military commanders, a legion of troops, and a pack of wolves like you."

There was a sudden intake of breath from the noble.

"I see. Here I thought you might be a worthy opponent but you lie like all humans." He was fast sprinting forward grabbing the mace but using his antlers in his initial charge.

At the last instant I moved, stepping aside. There was a loud crack and the stag went flying. He landed flat on his back about where I’d been led in. Everyone was looking at the fallen deer and I quickly shut down the armor covering my arm. I still held his broken antler though. He struggled to stand. His head tilted and he swayed trying to find his balance with only one massive antler. Considering the torque needed it was a wonder I hadn't broken his neck.

"Kill you." He muttered as he moved toward me unbalanced and swinging the mace drunkenly. I parried with his stolen horn. With each swing it broke more sending shards flying. Still, I was able to get a few good jabs in causing him to bleed. No critical blows however.

He was rapidly tiring. I darted in grabbing the lower handle of the mace. He was still incredibly strong as I was pulled off my feet. Still I maintained my grip placing several punches to his stomach. Finally he doubled over giving me a chance to trip him. He released the mace as he fell I swung it hard breaking his other antler off.

"Excellent! Finish him off." The official yelled.

In one smooth motion I dropped the mace grabbed one of the broken antler tines and sent it flying toward the official. "Do you submit?" I asked the stag.

"Just kill me."

"Stop being a doe. We both know your antlers will grow back in the spring. You are strong and smart. With some training you will improve. Against most opponents you would have won. However I've been turned into a weapon. I could have easily killed you, but your kind are rare and I'd rather have you as an ally. Now will you submit?"

"I submit. Not that it matters if you don't kill me that noble will."

"Not likely. He has a part of your horn in his brain case." I glanced back and the guards had crossbows pointed at us. I slowly stood with my hands up. "The stag is mine now. I defeated him and he has submitted to me."

"Both of you go that way." One of the guards yelled pointing toward one of the gates. "I guess we'd better do as he says, for now." I said, offering my hand to help the stag to his feet. "I'm Prowl."

"Bear." The stag replied.

I looked at him suspiciously as we started walking as the guard had instructed.

"My name is Strawberry, but no one respects me when I tell them that."

"It's fine, Bear. Just as long as you're honest with me, and my companions, I'll keep that to myself."

We were directed into a cell and locked in. “That didn't go so well. I hope it doesn't take long for my companion to notice I'm missing."

"You know we are both going to be executed? You killed a noble after all."

"Jordan, things have really gone wrong." I thought, but he didn't answer. He wasn't blocking that meant he had to be unconscious. This was bad. "Saber, can you hear me?" I couldn't sense him, but I'd hoped. It seemed we were out of range of our mental connection. I was going to have to find a way to get free and rescue Jordan myself.
