After having written so many chapters for my Other Earth series I've realized that all of them have been from the Human standpoint-- what about a story from the point of view of the other races from Other Earths? That ends with this anthology, an introduction to Axis and Nexus, two cities built on the various Earths across the entirety of the geometrical web of Earths that comprise the cluster of versions of reality introduced in my "Other Earths" series. Fair warning: this story takes place about 50 years after Cohen Clover, Book 2 in the series, and as far as I got as of the time of the post of this anthology so beware: spoilers may be present! Not sure what I'm talking about? Well, the main story starts here: https://sofurry.com/u/comidacomida/f/rm80vVm0

This is story one, focused on Kehler, an inter-earth businessman. In his early 40s, he's suffered victories and losses in life, having a hard go of it, but he's finally made it to the big time! Kehler is one of the cat folk from Central Earth, a version of Earth that will be introduced at the end of Book 4. He is a member of the Dusk Pelt subspecies, Panthers, who are considered low-born and not normally ones to expect a rise in social standing. His past has flavored his present, and he tends to take a cynical view of the world-- the one exception to this is a young Human he's known for a few years. This short story focuses on their deepening relationship, and hints at things to come.

Central Earth - Dusk Pelt

No matter the version of Earth on which he found himself, Kehler was no stranger to Axis City. The Panther was, of course, a native to Central Earth, but he'd spent enough time doing business in the other versions that he likely spent more time in other versions than his native one. No matter the version of Earth, however, he spent his time in Axis City and, considering he wasn't a graduate of the Unity Programme, that wasn't by coincidence.

While travel among the various Earths had been commonplace for decades, there were only a limited number of places non-natives could travel on any Earth without a certificate from the famed Unity Programme or a competency VISA and, while Kehler probably could have managed to qualify for the second, the cost in time and money placed it far outside his scope-- not because he lacked either, but because it was a poor investment when the various Axis Cities had everything he needed.

The southern continent in the eastern hemisphere of HIS version of Earth was known as Tsineth Vir or 'Australia' on the Earth in which he found himself, blandly known as 'Land Earth', which was inhabited by its natives, the Humans. Axis City was located in the same place on each Earth, though he understood from his few visits to Water Earth (another uninspired name) that there was a slight deviation of placement there to allow more travel in the water within the city limits. Regardless, all versions had an (almost) identical layout to make navigation easy for regular travelers such as Kehler.

The majority of established businesses worked by locals were state-controlled on most of the Earths, operated a unified business cooperative controlled by the Unity Programme itself, or by business moguls who were quick to obtain assets across the spectrum of Earths by investing in each. Kehler happened to be one of the latter variety, though his holdings were meager compared to some. Still, his interest in dealing with all versions of Earth meant that he'd done well for himself. He chuckled thinking about it, popping open a bottle of wine provided by the Human server who had dropped it off at his table. The Panther scented the aroma from the cork, smiling to himself; the monkey-kin really had a knack for alcohol.

Kehler enjoyed wine when he had an opportunity, but he usually saved it for special occasions, and that night certainly was one. Seated alone at his table, the Panther looked at the empty seat across from him, pouring a glass for himself before setting the bottle aside and flicking the fine glassware with the middle claw of his left paw-- a fine toast. He murmured softly to the memory of his lost kin. "It took some time, brother... but we did it."

The merchant had absolutely no illusions that he was a self-made feline; much of his success had been due to the work his brother had also put in to make their business venture successful-- unfortunately, his sibling wasn't around to see it; a tragic accident three years past had taken his brother from him and left Kehler to finish their dream on his own. It was bitter sweet finally experiencing success without worthwhile company. A blatant, uncouth call from the edge of the restaurant disturbed his thoughts. "Hey! Kehler!"

The merchant didn't have to look up from his wine to know who called to him: Benjamin Lee

Anderson, Human, male, 22. He was college student and failed Unity Programme initiate. Kehler always made it a point to know any associate-- business or otherwise. Ben happened to be of the 'otherwise' variety, one of the few people he felt inclined to spend time with aside from those who could advance his status as a businessman. Looking up from his wine, the Panther motioned to the seat across from him. Running a single paw pad around the lip of his wine glass, Kehler raised an eyebrow, flicking an ear as he regarded the young Human. "I had thought you had other plans this evening, Benjamin."

The ape-like biped, young enough to be his son, had been a bit of a surprise since their accidental introduction nearly two years passed. Kehler couldn't explain it but, for some reason, he enjoyed the young man's company. Although they didn't have a lot in common, there was something about the Human's company that he enjoyed. The Panther hadn't expected running into him that night but, considering he was on the verge of feeling sorry for himself, it was a pleasant distraction. Once Benjamin had taken the offered seat, the Human cleared his throat. "Well... I got done with midterms early, and I heard from Zane that you were in Axis."

The Panther smirked, reaching down to pick his glass up and took a sip, but not before peering over the lip of it at his companion. "Silly cub, I am always in Axis... just not always the Axis on THIS Earth."

Benjamin shrugged. "Well... I'M in this one, and, since you are too, I thought I'd come to say hi."

Kehler set his glass down, moving his paw to the menu in order to slide it over to his companion. "I see, and you knew just where to find me, it seems."

The young man blushed lightly, ignoring the menu in favor of maintaining the conversation. "Yeah... Zane again, but I DO remember hearing you say that you like Italian food, and Vita del Vino IS the one closest to the Gateway, so I would have figured it out on my own, I'm sure."

Zane was a mutual acquaintance of them both, and the reason why they'd originally met. The son of one of Kehler's business contacts, Zane was also in a short-term relationship with Benjamin and, despite the fact that the two weren't together any longer, they were apparently still on good terms; Kehler admired the capacity for some people to be capable of that-- few among his status could accomplish such a feat. Setting that thought aside, Kehler reached across the table to tap the menu in front of the Human with the claws on his index and middle fingers. "Well, since you are here, I suppose you should probably order. My treat, of course."

Benjamin laughed amiably. "That's about the only way I could afford it... this place is too expensive for a starving college student."

It was a common objection for the Human; Kehler knew that Benjamin had grown up among a poor household, much like the Panther himself had-- perhaps that was one reason why he enjoyed the Human's company. Although Kehler always pointed out that he wasn't concerned with the cost, the Human always was. As usual, however, the Panther ignored the discussion of money. "You know, Benjamin... I do not believe you had mentioned your preferred course of study. Did you not originally join the Unity Programme to study Xenosociology? Are you following a similar coursework now?"

Benjamin shook his head, eyes alternating between looking at Kehler and the menu. "No... after I left the Programme I decided to focus on social work instead."

Kehler arched a brow at that, letting a hint of playful disdain into his tone. "A social working degree, you say? A noble pursuit, I suppose, if one is inclined towards altruism over acquisition. I wouldn't overlook the study of economics, however. You might be surprised, Benjamin, how often a keen understanding of historical economics... particularly the flow of goods and the demand for exotics, which informs even the most seemingly unrelated fields."

The Human laughed lightly. "Well, I don't think I'll be going into administration so I'll be leaving the business side of things up to others."

The Panther sets his wine glass down with a delicate clink, amused by the simplified view the young Human had of the world. "Yes, perhaps, but when that day inevitably arrives, my library and my knowledge are at your disposal. I've always found that the most valuable commodity is not coin, but information. Besides... a well-placed funding stream can be far more lucrative than a thousand good intentions, wouldn't you agree?"

Kehler leaned forward, knowing that Benjamin wouldn't take him too seriously; it was something of a ritual for the two of them, enjoying their usual back-and-forth. The Panther considered the young Human to be a good cub... a little naive, perhaps, but genuine. Genuine was rare in his line of work, and rare had value. Heedless of the thoughts in Kehler's head, the Human readily laughed at the statement. "Yeah... and if it's anything like what your usual ventures sound like, it could probably fund a few dozen soup kitchens too!"

It was another common 'friendly argument' between them, done tongue-in-cheek to acknowledge that they were having fun with the banter. Benjamin's immediately faded as he glanced down at his data pad, his demeanor shifting into one of distinct dismay. "Oh, shit! It's the fourteenth! Kehler... I'm so sorry!"

Very few people Kehler knew professionally had any insight into his life but, for some reason, the laid back, naive young Human sitting across from him was one of a very small circle of individuals who knew about the loss of his brother. That night was the anniversary of the night the Panther lost his brother-- Ben was one of the few people with whom Kehler had been honest with and open about the loss. Clearing his throat, the businessman looked down at his wine. "Yes. So it is."

In a way it was nice having the bandage torn off fresh and early in the discussion, but, as expected, it was also a little tender. When Kehler took another sip from his wine without speaking further, Benjamin, in his awkward, uncertain way pushed. "Do you... want to talk about it?"

It was a topic that came up occasionally, but Kehler almost never discussed it-- not since the night, more than a year ago when the feline, in a particularly bad stretch, got horribly drunk and ended up crying in the Human's grasp, slovenly and morosely-- truly a pitiful memory. The very next day, however, Benjamin didn't seem to look at him any differently. In fact, if anything, they'd grown puzzlingly closer. That was probably the day that Kehler realized that he-- was 'fond' of the young man. It was a strange thing for the Panther to admit; people in his position didn't often open up to others and, if they did, it was far more common to hold a degree of apathy for those who experience any exposed weakness. Benjamin, however, did not elicit that response. No... far from it.

Kehler could feel his confident demeanor faltering and he used the moment to glance down at the weathered amulet provided to him by his brother. He'd received it when the two made their first trip to Land Earth to start their business; his paw traced the worn gold. He no longer bothered to upkeep his easy smile, replacing with a somber, distant expression. The bustling restaurant, the clinking of glasses, the soft music-- it all faded into a dull hum around him. The Panther remembered it; of course he remembered. His memories enveloped him, clouding out the arrival of the server, and the ordering of their meal. It did help give him a moment to think and to collect his thoughts, mind returning to the present only once the server left.

Taking a slow, deliberate breath, the rich aroma of his wine suddenly smelled bland. Kehler looked up, green eyes meeting Benjamin's brown ones, and for a moment, the usual boastfulness was gone, replaced by the same raw vulnerability he felt. He cleared his throat, a low, gravelly sound. "The fourteenth, yes... as you know. That is today." he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. The Panther hesitated, his gaze drifting to a distant point beyond Benjamin's shoulder, as he got caught up in past memories.

Kehler picked up his wine glass, swirling the deep red liquid, but didn't drink. "It's... it it a difficult memory to revisit, Benjamin. But sometimes... sometimes it feels harder to keep it buried." He looked back to the Human, honestly thankful for the raw moment, and the genuine nature of the young man exposing it. "Thank you, for remembering... and for asking, I suppose."

Benjamin nodded in response offering a soft, patient, encouraging smile. "If you don't want to talk about it I won't push you, Kehler... but... if you do, I'm here."

The Human reached out a hand to rest it with gentle empathy on the back of one of Kehler's paws. The Panther flinched slightly at the unexpected touch, a fleeting moment of surprise before he let it be, his large paw settling more comfortably under Benjamin's reassuring hand. The warmth of the Human's touch was a stark contrast to the cold grip of memory. He closed his eyes for a moment, exhaling slowly before responding, fighting the emotion back from his voice. "No, Benjamin, thank you. Your... your presence is enough. More than enough."

The young man's soft words cut through his world of blackness. "Well... I'm here."

Kehler opened his eyes. He still felt the vulnerability there despite his will to halt it, but he brought his analytical self to bear, examining the pain rather than simply feeling it. He... he loved celebrations-- my brother did. He loved good food and good wine. He always said life was too short for anything less than exquisite moments. He managed a faint, sad smile, looking at his dinner companion. "We were... celebrating a particularly large trade deal. Had just closed on a shipment of the finest aur'trel... your people call them 'kaffir lime leaves'. He was so proud. Conducting business across the Gateways was a goal we'd both shared."

Benjamin nodded, leaning forward, in all senses seemingly engrossed in the retelling. His slight prodding was only in reaffirming what he'd heard with a simple insert of "It sounds like it was a big win for you guys..."

Kehler cleared his throat, regaining some composure, despite feeling haunted by the memory. "It was a transport accident. A new Oolou on shift neglected to set a brake. Right outside the market. Just... gone. In an instant. The aur'trel... they were scattered everywhere. Like a macabre confetti." he shuddered, a deep, visceral reaction to the memory. Clearing his throat, he pushed forward. "It's why I insist on quality, Benjamin. Why I strive for perfection. To honor him. To ensure every moment, every taste, every scent... is worth something. Because you never know when it will be your last."

Benjamin's hand continued to hold Kehler's loose paw, and gave it a comforting squeeze. "That's... horrible."

The Panther took a long, slow sip of this wine. It was a fine vintage but, on that particular night it tasted of grief and sour memory. "Mmm... well, that night we first discussed him... I was trying to forget that very lesson at the bottom of several bottles of very low quality swill." He offered an emotionless chuckle before pausing, looking up to his dinner companion before offering a genuine smile. "Nothing like tonight. Thank you, again, for reminding me of the importance of quality."

Ben, apparently heedless of the subtle compliment, gave Kehler's paw a gentle squeeze and let it go, drawing his hand back and, surprisingly, left Kehler feel a little cold for its absence. "We all hit points in our lives that we benefit from having others in it, Kehler... I'm just glad I could be there for you-- kinda like how you're always there for me."

The Human smiled faintly, his cheeks flushing slightly as he broke eye contact, obviously a little embarrassed at being so earnest in the statement. Kehler didn't bother keeping a genuine, if still melancholic, smile from his muzzle. He greatly enjoyed how insightful yet still blind the Human could be, especially when it came to praise. You are a remarkably perceptive young man, Benjamin," He reached across the table, not to touch, but to gesture with an open paw towards the young man, a silent acknowledgment of the familiarity between them. "And you are so very right. We do all have 'those moments'. More than we often care to admit-- especially those of us who pride ourselves on our... self-sufficiency."

He took another, more appreciative sip of his wine, which, he found, was tasting less of sorrow and more of quiet gratitude. He leaned back in his chair, his gaze steady on the Human in front of him. He had a fondness for Benjamin that had grown over the years but, until that night, balancing the pain of memory with the joy of being in-the-moment, the Panther hadn't been inclined to face it. "You have a way of cutting through the... veneer, Benjamin. It is a rare quality. Most people see a Dusk Pelt merchant, the one who knows his peppercorns from his cardamom. You? You see the man beneath. You see me... and I am... grateful for that."

A comfortable silence settled between them, punctuated only by the distant clatter of cutlery and muffled conversations. It was a silence of understanding, a shared moment of quiet introspection that Kehler could share with few people. Ultimately Benjamin's soft laugh broke that silence in a mirthful way. "Really? 'Self-sufficiency'.... heh... my psychology professor calls it 'aggressive independence'... sometimes I think professors just don't 'get' people who don't always want to step in line and be one of the flock. But... yeah..." the smile slowly faded and his eyes took on a long-distance gaze to them as he let out a soft sigh "... I guess we all are what our histories have made us..." he slowly looked up to meet Kehler's eyes with his own "...along with the people who've helped define us."

Benjamin held the pather's gaze until Kehler chuckled, a low, rumbling sound that quickly faded. He noticed the slight hesitation, the flicker of something unsaid in Benjamin's eyes, but he didn't comment on it. Instead, he simply nodded, a slow, deliberate movement. "Indeed, Ben. Indeed."

Kehler always made it a point to refer to everyone by their full name. In the exceedingly rare moment he used a more familiar form of address he usually relied on his people's preferred form of shortening a name by using the name's last syllable... so why had he done it the Human way and used the first syllable of Benjamin's name? He didn't have an answer for himself.

The Panther reached for his wine glass again, taking a small sip, allowing the moment to linger, to settle between them. The conversation has shifted, deepened, and Kehler found himself appreciating the unexpected turn. He ultimately cleared his throat, a subtle shift in his posture as he let things slowly transition back into familiar territory. The return of the server with their meal gave him a new avenue to travel. "And speaking of defining influences, let us hope they live up to the standard tonight."

Ben's expression returned to 'comfortably and amicably engaged' as the meal arrived; Kehler realized that the young man was at his best when he had something to focus on and a grand topic for discussion. Benjamin was, of course, blown away just by viewing by the meal, and he had no qualms about letting Kehler know just how amazing it was-- it was funny in a way how expressive Ben could be when properly motivated.

The Panther learned early on in their relationship that the Human had very few experiences that those with means took for granted-- it was enjoyable living vicariously through him in re-experiencing all of the delights for the first time. Kehler leaned back, savoring the Human's unbridled delight, a far more satisfying reward than any trade deal. "Ah, the first taste," the Panther murmured, his green eyes twinkling. "A truly magical moment."

Kehler took a slow, deliberate bite of his own agnello brodettato, nodding with approval. "While your enthusiasm is... charming, Benjamin, I trust you'll find the nuances are even more rewarding as you progress. The delicate balance of the saffron in the risotto, the bright counterpoint of the gremolata..." He gestured with his fork, indicating the various components on the Human' dish. "Don't just eat it, Benjamin. Experience it. Allow each flavor to tell its story on your tongue. It's a symphony, not merely sustenance. And remember, a truly fine meal, much like a well-structured life, reveals its deeper truths with each careful consideration."

His companion was all smiles, gingerly picking at the meal, following the suggestions like a masterful student under the direction of a skilled instructor. His own food forgotten, Kehler's feast was in watching Benjamin enjoy his plate. It was good to see his Human companion so engaged-- it made the night easier-- simpler to focus on brighter thoughts. "So... what do you think of the tenderness of the veal? And the aroma? Is it not simply divine?"

Ben took another bite, his eyes closing in blissful appreciation as he chewed slowly, obviously savoring every aspect. He swallowed, then opens his eyes, a look of profound satisfaction on his face. "Oh, Kehler, it's... it's incredible! The veal just... melts! And the sauce, it's so rich, but not heavy. And the saffron... wow. It's like... like a warm hug for my mouth!"

Kehler chuckled, a deep, rumbling sound of pure satisfaction at Ben's enthusiastic reaction. "A warm hug for your mouth," he repeated, a genuine smile spreading across his muzzle. "An apt, if somewhat... unorthodox, description. But yes, Ben, this is how it should be. This is the standard against which all other osso buco should be judged. And the aroma? You did not comment on the aroma, Benjamin. I trade in spices... always speak to me about the aromas."

The panther knew Humans didn't have the best sense of smell, but Kehler still wanted to hear about it, and his companion complied obediently. "It smells like... like everything good in the world, all wrapped up in one delicious package. You were absolutely right, Kehler; this is amazing! Seriously, thank you for making me try it!" He took another eager bite, clearly already planning his next. "Is it always this good? Or did they just pull out all the stops because YOU're here?"

Kehler leaned back, a smug, contented expression on his face, enjoying the vicarious pleasure of Benjamin's discovery. He took a delicate bite of his own lamb, allowing the complex flavors to unfold on his tongue as he recentered himself before continuing. "Because of me? Well... let's just say that certain establishments tend to... elevate their game when a discerning palate, such as my own, graces their tables. Reputation, my friend, is a powerful motivator. And a well-placed word from a prominent intra-Earth spice merchant can do wonders for a restaurant's standing."

The Human stared at him as if he were a deity. "Oh.... wow."

The Panther, a playful acknowledgment of his own influence. "In all seriousness, my young friend, this particular dish is one of their consistent triumphs. It requires a certain dedication to tradition, a refusal to cut corners. It is one of the Human dishes I know well and, while many places attempt it, few achieve this level of perfection. I'm glad you appreciate it." He watched Benjamin devour another mouthful, a quiet contentment settling over him; it was a good night... a very good night.

Their time passed in the consumption of their meals until Ben finally sat back, sighing contentedly as he polished off his plate, smiling warmly as he addressed the Panther. "Life is always an adventure with you, Kehler... I can't believe the number of things I got to experience that I never would have in my wildest dreams... just because you're my friend."

Kehler's chuckle softened into a warm rumble at the Human's heartfelt words. He laid down his fork, his green eyes meeting Ben's with intensity, but warmth. He set aside his easy boastfulness, preferring genuine warmth. "And life is... less bland with you in it, Ben," Kehler replied, his voice dropping slightly, losing its usual performative edge. He picked up his wine glass, swirling the contents thoughtfully. "Your... innocence, your open appreciation for things many of us take for granted... after dealing with the Dawn Pelts and Sun Pelts on my world, and the corporations of yours, it's honestly a refreshing tonic."

The compliment may have gone over his friend's head. Blinking, Benjamin responded with a hesitant "I-it... is?"

Taking another slow sip of his wine, Kehler's gaze drifted to the restaurant's opulent decor. He really did mean what he said; It wasn't just a compliment. "You remind me that there's still wonder in the world, even for an old merchant who has seen more than his fair share of its... less palatable aspects. You bring... a certain lightness to my often-heavy existence."

Ben blushed, shrugging off the praise in that self-same completely unware he always did. "Well... that hardly feels like a fair exchange for all the adventures I get to have because of you, you know."

Kehler responded with a rare, truly tender smile, devoid of any pretense or self-aggrandizement-- hardly common for a shrewd businessman. "It's not just me who provides the 'adventure', you know, Ben. You, in your own quiet way, broaden the horizons of this old Dusk Pelt as well. For that, I am truly, truly grateful."

Benjamin laughed more freely, the town sounding mirthful rather than scornful. "Every time you call yourself 'old' it blows my mind... I don't know a lot about your people, but I always end up forgetting that we aren't the same age. I guess there's something true said about adventure keeping you young. I don't think 'old' guys are allowed to be handsome like you are, Keh--" The Human froze, turning beet red before freezing mid-sentence and quickly speaking over himself. "I mean... ah-- you know what I mean."

The young man followed the statement with a nervous laugh, the sound causing the Panther's ears to raise. Kehler knew that genuine truth was often passed over as jest, and that kernel of truth had not gone unnoticed, causing the businessman's heart to beat just a little faster. There was something to it, but Ben, like many young men, was flighty, which meant that the Panther had to approach the situation with a certain tact.

Kehler's let his deep chuckle fill the space between them, a rich, warm sound that quickly turned into a full-throated laugh he had even half a second to consider Benjamin's compliment, followed by the poor Human's immediate, flustered retraction. The Panther leaned back in his chair, thoroughly amused. "Oh, Benjamin, my dear, sweet Monkey...tou are truly a marvel. And no, 'old' does not preclude 'handsome', I assure you. In fact, some might argue that age merely refines one's... distinguished features. I would, in fact, consider it great praise to be called handsome."

He stroked his muzzle, a self-satisfied smirk causing his whiskers to perk upward. "And as for my species, bearing in mind that I can't speak for the Dawn Pelts, Sun Pelts, or Star Pelts, while I may have a few more years under my belt than you, us Dusk Pelts are known for our longevity. We age like a fine Barolo, you see."

He watched Ben's blush deepen, unable to help but enjoy the Human's social caution. He raised a paw, a gesture of mock surrender, but continued to smile. "But fear not, my young friend. Your slip of the tongue is quite... forgivable. In fact, I find it rather endearing. It's refreshing to be appreciated, even if it does come with a side of... delightful embarrassment."

Kehler took a fresh sip of his wine, his gaze still fixed on Benjamin, a knowing smile playing on his lips. Having had a laugh at the Human's expense, he realized, to be fair, he'd need to offer an escape. "So shall we simply agree that I am aging like fine wine, and leave it at that?"

The Human was still fumbling so his follow-up comment was obviously a train of thought that left the station before it could be considered carefully. Rather than accept the avenue offered to correct his babbling, Benjamin ended up doubling down. "Sweeter, and with a fuller body?"

Kehler barked a laugh, the sound sharp and delighted, thoroughly entertained by Benjamin's accidental riposte. He leaned forward, his eyes alight with genuine amusement, completely abandoning his offer for escape and choosing instead to embrace the moment. "Precisely, Ben! Precisely!" he practically crowed, raising his glass in a mock toast. "Fuller body, indeed! A more complex bouquet, certainly. And a finish that lingers on the palate that leaves one desperately wanting for more!"

He winked, letting his mischievousness show. "You see? You understand the intricacies of fine vintages far better than you let on. Perhaps there's a connoisseur lurking beneath that social worker exterior after all. Or at the very least, a remarkably astute observer of metaphors." He took a long, satisfied sip of his wine, the corners of his eyes crinkling with pleasure. "To fuller bodies, then, in all their glorious forms!"

Benjamin's face flushed as he raised his own drink obediently to accept the toast "And a taste that lingers on the palate... an... acquired taste."

Kehler didn't miss the way the young man quickly took a drink from his glass to hide yet another blush, but the panther was happy enough to grin at Ben's quick, witty retort, a genuine appreciation for the Human's sharp mind. He flicked his glass with his middle claw, the sound a soft chime in the elegant restaurant. "An acquired taste, you say?" Kehler smiled with amusement. He took a slow, deliberate sip of his drink, letting the rich liquid coat his tongue, thinking to how long he'd known the young man and wondering if there were signs prior to that night that he'd missed... an indication that the Human was interested in him? All signs pointed to it in that moment, and that thought was more intoxicating than his wine. "Perhaps. But isn't that often where the most profound pleasures lie, Ben? In the subtle nuances, the depths that reveal themselves only to those with the patience and discernment to truly appreciate them?"

He watched Ben over the rim of his glass, a knowing look in his eyes. He sensed the Human's inner turmoil, the unspoken thoughts swirling beneath the surface. Kehler has always considered himself adept at reading people, at sensing the currents beneath the calm exterior. He didn't press, didn't overtly acknowledge the unspoken turmoil in the Human, but he let a gentle curiosity bleed over in his glance-- an open invitation. "Some things," he continued, his voice a low, thoughtful murmur, "are worth the effort of acquiring the taste for." The Panther perked an eyebrow, looking straight at his young dinner companion. "Wouldn't you agree?"

He left the question to hang in the air, a soft, lingering invitation, much like the finish of a fine wine. Kehler could tell that Benjamin was thinking, which was a good thing-- he wanted the Human to think. Ben, cheeks still flushing, lowered his gazes into his glass, rolling the rich liquid around in the goblet. Kehler could practically read his thoughts-- he was considering their mirthful exchange-- he was just having fun with a friend, right? Was what they were doing flirting? Kehler almost wondered that himself; he did not often go after males, and had never considered a Human as a potential lover, let alone one half his age.

Kehler continued watching Ben, a soft, knowing, patient smile playing on his muzzle. He saw the flush, the averted gaze, the internal debate playing out on the Human's expressive face. He allowed the silence to stretch, a comfortable, unhurried space, before bringing things back with a guided query. "I merely asked, Ben," Kehler elaborated, his voice gentle, devoid of any pressure, "if you agree that some things are worth the effort of acquiring the taste for. Like a complex wine, or perhaps... a... nuanced friendship?" He emphasized the last two words ever so slightly, his green eyes purposefully holding the Human's with a steady, unwavering gaze.

The panther took another sip of his wine, allowing Ben the space to process, to respond-- or not to respond. Kehler was in no hurry. He had all the time on the various Earths. He simply observed, a patient predator, not of prey, but of understanding. Kehler smiled to himself, realizing that Ben was thinking about it. Good. Let him think.

Ultimately Benjamin nodded his head slowly. "Oh... well... yeah. Of course. I don't have a lot of friends, so I think ANY friendship is worth the effort-- nuanced or otherwise. I really like being friends with you though, Kehler... things are really simple and straight forward. You know... what you see is what you get!"

The Panther didn't stifle a small, genuine chuckle rumbling in his chest. The Human's earnestness was a refreshing contrast to the often-calculating interactions Kehler navigates in his daily life. The directness, the lack of pretense-- it was something Kehler deeply valued in his companion. There was a great difference between the self-serving sycophants by which Kehler was usually surrounded and the time he was able to spend with Ben. On one paw, the thought that Benjamin didn't understand how duplicitous he could be or failed to notice all the masks he wore hurt but, as he considered it, Kehler realized that Ben was the one person he didn't need any of that to be around.

Smiling, the Panther mused on that thought, swirling the rich red liquid in his glass, before looking up to meet his companion's gaze. "Simplicity is a rare and often undervalued commodity, isn't it? Especially in relationships. You are quite right, Ben. With you, there is a refreshing lack of... artifice. I, too, value our friendship. Immensely. You bring a... a certain clarity to my world. A reminder that genuine connection can exist without the need for endless negotiation or hidden agendas."

The Human smiled, raising his own glass in a Human version of a toast. "I'm glad that I can be here for you like that then, Kehler."

The Panther met the glass with his own, completing the ritualistic touching of glasses that Humans were so fond of. "To simple, straightforward friendships, then..." He then winked, taking a final, satisfying sip of his wine, but not before adding "...and perhaps, a touch of nuanced complexity to keep things interesting."

Ben was all smiles, also having finished his own drink. He set his glass down with a contented sigh, looking down at his empty plate. "I DID want to thank you for taking me out again, Kehler... I swear, one of these days I'LL treat YOU... but... maybe when it's a cheaper place. Being a college student means I don't have a lot of disposable income."

The Human's erstwhile, sheepish, open laugh was genuine, and told Kehler that the Human's offer was not an empty promise. Despite the wide gap in their income levels, Ben was not content to always be treated without offfering something in return. The Panther chuckled, adding that onto the other promises that he, in a rare display of trust, considered as good as coin in his pocket. "My dear Ben," Kehler spoke, a dismissive wave of his paw, "your company is payment enough. Besides," he leaned forward conspiratorially whispering, "I have a reputation to uphold. A businessman of my standing cannot be seen frequenting establishments that serve anything less than the finest fare. It would be... bad for business."

The young man shrugged, dejection evident immediately. "Oh... right."

Kehler paused, Ben's expression creating a visceral pain in the Panther's chest. Leaning back with a sigh, he reassessed his answer. "But do not fret. There will be other opportunities for you to 'treat' me. Perhaps a quiet evening at your place, with some of that... charming home cooking you occasionally speak of. I confess, my palate is always open to new experiences, even those that do not involve shaved truffle and imported saffron."

Ben fidgeted, his smile returning. "I... could do that."

The panther smiled openly, hoping his expression would let Ben know he was teasing. The Human was a good one, despite being barely past being a cub; Kehler rarely actively enjoyed spoiling any of his companions, but there was something about the Human that made him adore the process. "No, Benjamin... you do not have to go to such lenghts. Truly, the pleasure tonight, as always, was entirely mine."

Ben's eyebrows raised at that. "No... I really could, Kehler... I mean, if you'd be okay with me cooking for you. I AM pretty decent in the kitchen, but I'm a home cook... just so long as you know it definitely couldn't compete with what YOU'RE used to..."

Kehlers ears twitched, a subtle sign of his amusement at Bens surprised reaction. He leaned forward, his green eyes sparkling with genuine interest; something about his companion helped him escape his usual critical culinary demeanor. The Panther surprised himself when his words were accentuated with a soft, gentle rumble-- the closest a Dusk Pelt came to a purr. "Ben, my dear boy, do you truly believe a connoisseur of flavor such as myself is limited to the confines of often-trod establishments?Nonsense! The most exquisite culinary experiences often arise from humble origins, from dishes prepared with passion and heart, rather than merely technique and expensive ingredients."

The Human blinked blankly. "I... guess?"

Smirking, Kehler gestured with a paw, encompassing the elegant dining room. "This," he spoke, accentuating the gesture with a slight wave of dismissal, "is a performance. A grand spectacle. But sometimes, one craves the quiet intimacy of a truly personal creation. A dish that tells a story, rather than simply presenting a tableau." Lowering his arm, the Panther leaned forward, his voice lowering in tone to something much more intimate. "Besides, I am a businessman that deals in spices, herbs, and rare inter-Earth ingredients, am I not? I possess the ability to elevate even the most rudimentary of fare. Imagine the symphony we could create together, with your 'home cooking' as the canvas, and my exquisite spices as the vibrant hues!"

Ben stared. "Okay... so... you'd be okay coming over for dinner?"

Kehler leaned back, a confident, expectant look on his face. "Yes, Ben. I would be more than 'okay' with you cooking for me. I would, in fact, be... intrigued. There is no more worthwhile intimacy than getting to know one another better over food."

Ben nodded thoughtfully as he considered the statement, "I DO like some worthwhile intimacy--" at which point he paused, and Kehler recognized the moment the Human suddenly realized how that must have sounded, and the young man quickly added "In my apartment--" but that apparently didn't sound much better to him so, tripping over himself, he continued digging himself deeper: "--in the kitchen--" and Kehler had to avoid smirking when the Human grimaced, and tried again "Food.

Getting-to-know-you. Making food. Eating food... with you."

Ben's red face disappeared as he dropped his head on the table and let out a deep sigh. His next words came out a little muffled due to the placement of his face against the wood grain. "I might have drank to much."

The young man was a bad liar-- probably because he did it so rarely, and Kehler, who'd been watching, knew that the Human had only drank one small glass with his meal. The Panther, in fact, had Ben's internal struggle unfold with a mixture of amusement and genuine affection. He purposely didn't interrupt the Human's increasingly flustered attempts to backtrack, allowing the awkwardness to play out fully. When Ben finally dropped his head to the table with a theatrical sigh, blaming the wine, Kehler simply laughed. "Ben, my dear cub, you only had one glass!"

Despite leaving it at a statement of disagreement, he kept his voice rich with mirth as he completely dismissed the transparent excuse. "And while a fine red can certainly loosen the tongue, I rather suspect your charming clumsiness is entirely your own." He reached across the table, not to scold, but to gently tap Ben's arm with a velvet-clad paw. "There is no need to tie yourself in knots, my friend. I understand perfectly well what you mean. The... intimacy of sharing a home-cooked meal. The getting-to-know-you through the shared act of creation. The simple pleasure of making food and eating food... with me."

He mirrored Ben's earlier, flustered phrases with a deliberate, teasing cadence, meeting the Human's gaze with his own, green eyes sparkling with playful challenge. He waited for his companion's response. Ben's cheeks reddened when he finally provided it. "Y-yeah... that's it exactly."

Unable to hold off on calling his young companion out, Kehler pounced on the weakness in a far nicer way than he would have in a business negotiation. "And besides, a little sexual tension never hurt anyone, did it? It merely adds another layer of... spice to the interaction. Wouldn't you agree?"

The question hung in the air, a daring invitation, a blatant acknowledgment of the unspoken undercurrents Ben has been so desperately trying to deny. Kehler leaned back, a triumphant smirk on his muzzle after having thoroughly cornered the Human. There was something so very gratifying when it came to concluding a hunt that he'd never properly started. It felt like a bonus victory on an already full day especially with the way the Human responded.

Kehler watched Ben's reaction, the wide eyes, the gaping mouth, the sputtering attempts at a coherent response. He savored the moment, the delightful discomfort of the Human when Ben finally managed to string a sentence together. "Now you're just messing with me, Kehler... you don't have to play like that just because... you know... because I... like men."

Raising an eyebrow, the Panther pressed onward. "Am I, Ben?" His voice a low, dangerous rumble, laced with undeniable challenge. Kehler leaned forward, his green eyes locking onto Ben's, stripping away any pretense of casual banter. The playful mask slipped, revealing a predatory intensity beneath. "Or perhaps," he continued, voice dropping to a near whisper, "I am merely speaking the truth that you are too timid to acknowledge? You believe I am 'playing' because the thought of genuine desire between us is too... unsettling for your... carefully constructed world?"

He let the words hang in the air, a heavy, palpable weight. When Ben failed to respond, the Panther continued. "You say 'you know'," Kehler pressed, his gaze unwavering, "but do you... Ben? Do you truly know what I am thinking? What I am feeling? Or are you merely projecting your own anxieties onto what you believe are my views?" He paused, allowing the full weight of his words to sink in. "Tell me, my little cub. What exactly do I 'know'?"

Despite the Human's skin being beet read in a blush, something seemed to break open in Ben and, eyes shut in abject embarrassment, the Human managed to get the words out, and with surprising eloquence, even going so far back as to reference the discussion on wine. "I... want to savor your flavor... let it dance on my tongue. I want to swish you around in my glass. I want to bask in your aroma... feel you slip down my throat. Kehler..." his words dropped to an even quieter tone "...I don't have to acquire a taste for you... I've already had long enough to... want the whole bottle."

A slow, predatory appreciation dawned within Kehler's depths as Ben articulated his desire with such poetic, wine-infused passion. The blush on the Human's face, the trembling vulnerability only made the boldness of his words all the more intoxicating. Each metaphor, each sensual image, painted a vivid picture of a longing far deeper than casual interest. The Panther appreciated that his companion truly understood the vintage-- understood HIM.

Kehler's grip subtly tightened on Ben's hand, letting it serve as a silent acknowledgment of the raw power in the Human's confession. He didn't speak immediately, letting the heady aroma of Ben's unadulterated desire wash over him, a more potent intoxication than any wine; he'd smelled it before in various ways, but never that strong, and, until that moment, hadn't connected the dots as to its meaning. Has his young friend desired him that long? The image of being the 'whole bottle' for the Human settled deep within him, stirring something he'd thought long dormant. What had started as harmless flirting with the young man was very quickly taking on a mind of its own... and the Panther couldn't really object.

The merchant finally spoke, murmuring with a husky tone. "The whole bottle?" He leaned even closer, his large feline head dipping slightly, bringing his muzzle alongside Ben's ear, letting his breath brush against Ben's skin. "And what," he whispered, the question a silken thread, seeking to draw Ben deeper into the web of his intent, "would you do with the whole bottle, Ben? Would you merely savor it, sip by slow sip, admiring its complexity... or would you uncork it, and drink until there is nothing left but the intoxicating memory?"

His paw shifted from the back of Ben's hand, his fingers sliding, deliberately, beneath Ben's palm, his calloused pads brushing against the softer skin. It was an intimate gesture, a physical manifestation of the boundary that has just been shattered, an unspoken invitation to explore the depths of a newly acknowledged thirst. It had been a long time since Kehler had been someone's wine bottle, and certainly never for a Human half his age, but he couldn't deny the appeal of the innocent young man seated across from him. It was not something he'd sought out, but he would have had to have been a fool to pass up the opporunity; Kehler was no fool.

Fingers shaking, Ben's fingers managed to interlace with the Panther's, their palms brushing together as the young Human squeezed it softly, obviously fighting back his shyness to try and keep up with the discussion, somewhere between flirting and blatantly dirty. "I'd nurse it all night long... I... I want to be drunk on you. I want to fall asleep with you in my arms, and wake up with the world's best hangover.. and... and maybe take in some more hair-of-the-cat to get over it."

Kehler didn't know a lot of Human turns-of-phrase, but the 'hair of the dog' reference was one he did understand. It was corny, but not too corny to forgive. He didn't say anything however, and his silence caused Ben to pushf orward. "Kehler... college is hard, but it's worthwhile... yet I think you're probably the one thing that helps me get through it the most. You're my anchor."

The fragile, trembling squeeze against his paw was a powerful affirmation. The direct contact, palm to paw, sent a surprising jolt through him. Ben's words, painting a vivid picture of intimacy and the comfort of an 'anchor' resonated deeply, stirring a longing he hadn't fully acknowledged until that moment; Ben saw him as an anchor-- something consistent to be relied upon and not just a fleeting pleasure. Having experienced most of his relationships as business transactions, that was not something the Panther was used to, and he found it... intriguing.

His thumb began to slowly, rhythmically stroke the back of Ben's hand, a silent acknowledgment of the connection. The very thought of where things were going with the Human sent a shiver through Kehler, a stark contrast to his often solitary existence. "An anchor," the Panther repeated, the word soft, almost reverent, tasting it on his tongue. He lifted their joined hands, bringing Ben's knuckles to his lips, and presses a gentle, lingering kiss there, his gaze never leaving the young man's eyes. He wanted it to serve as a gesture of profound tenderness, a promise of something far deeper than mere physical indulgence.

Physical-- that was easy, but a connection... that took work. The Human, he decided, was worth it. "I assure you, Ben, this bottle is entirely yours to uncork. To savor, to indulge in, to drink from until the very last drop. And I, for one, would be honored to be the cause of your hangover."

Although his eyes focused entirely on Ben's shocked expression, he lowered his muzzle to offer a fresh soft kiss on Ben's hand. The restaurant, the other patrons-- all faded into an indistinct hum. There was only Ben, and the profound connection that was blooming between them. Kehler maintained his position, waiting patiently, like a stalking jungle cat waiting for his prey to make its next move.

The embarrassment finally started to fade from Ben's face, but a flush was still there and Kehler's keen ears could hear the Human's heart beat, which, already fast, started beating even faster as Ben licked his lip, took in a breath, and spoke "Kehler... would y-- could..." he paused, taking another breath before composing himself, and looked straight into the Panther's eyes "I'd like you to come home with me tonight. My apartment isn't anything special, and I know you've probably had hotel rooms a lot nicer than--" his eyes started to lower again as he rambled but, when he stopped himself, his next gaze up was full of conviction "... it'll be nicer with you there."

Kehler's keen ears picked up the frantic rhythm of Ben's heart, a drumbeat of anticipation that mirrored the sudden surge within his own chest. The lingering flush on Ben's face was a beacon, a testament to the raw vulnerability he was laying bare. He watched Ben's struggle: the licked lip, the hitched breaths, the almost-retreat, and then the resolute gaze that finally met his. The young man was actually asking it-- he was really asking? The words 'come home with me tonight' resonated with a profound intimacy that eclipsed the luxurious surroundings.

Kehler's grip on Ben's hand tightened, a silent promise. He had listened to Ben's self-deprecating ramble about his apartment, the comparison to hotel rooms, and then the sudden, powerful conviction in the human's voice. Raising an eyebrow, Kehler questioned the final point the young man had made. "Nicer with me there?" His emoted more than he'd planned, words accompanied by a low, throaty rumble that vibrated through their joined digits; he really did like the sound of that.

Despite his enjoyment of fine things, Kehler didn't need grand hotels or opulent suites. The warmth in Ben's voice, the genuine desire in his eyes, was more alluring than any five-star accommodation. He pulled Ben's hand closer to his chest, placing it over his own heart, letting the Human feel its steady, powerful beat. "Ben, my dear, sweet Ben." He leaned in, his muzzle brushing against Ben's cheek, then his ear, whiskers flicking against the Human's bare flesh. "There is no hotel in any city, no grand suite, no gilded cage, that could ever compare to the comfort of your invitation. To the... 'promise' in your eyes."

When he felt Ben shiver at the flicker of his whiskers, Kehler's voice dropped to a husky whisper, laced with genuine warmth and burgeoning desire. "Lead the way, cub. I am entirely yours, and I assure you... it will be much nicer with us BOTH there."

He gave Ben a gentle, almost ephemeral kiss on the cheek followed by one final, reassuring squeeze of the Human's hand before slowly releasing it, allowing Ben to take the lead; the unspoken contract between them had been sealed.
