Locked Inside-out: ch.4
#4 of Locked inside-out
Don't grade me wrongfully on this story. It is my first one here and it's been a while since I last attempted to even start one. First person view has never been my forte but I thought it might help to expand, and this story was thought up on a point to point plot. I don't plan for it to go too in depth.
Consecutive rules apply: If you dissagree, please refrain from leaving your anger in a comment. Please don't plagiarize, it hurts knowing that credit was given to somebody else for my work. Otherwise, if you feel something could be improved or have any requests, just feel free to say so.
I awoke to the sound of thunder, first it's loud crack and then the following low rumble. The light from the windows were missing, replaced by the soft grey glow of rain clouds. Outside it was pouring, and to my excitement meant that Jessica wouldn't take me outside.
The bathroom door was closed and the shower must've been drowned out by the rain, but the sound of the shower's door closing assured me that she had just finished. I looked around the roo- I noticed that I was halfway buried beneath the bed sheets.
I wasn't suspicious, mind you. Sometimes masters prefered the feel of clean, soft fur instead of smooth skin. Something about it that goes back to an instinctual sense, past the everyday mind to bring on a deeper sleep. Plus, I didn't mind. It was often cold, even for me, and Jessica would be kind enough to share body heat.
Stop thinking like that. I mentioned it before, it's the master's bond. I wouldn't try anything unless she felt strongly enough to trigger it first. With that aggreement in place, I was supposed to keep my instincts unnoticable to anyone but-
--
My ears perked up to the sound of a knock on the front door over the downpour outside, returning my attention to reality. Who would be waiting out in the rain? Even Amy, who's still at a friend's house since last night, wouldn't even walk or run through this kind of weather, let alone stand and take the chance that someone would let them in immediately.
The four sharp knocks came again.
I at least wanted to know who it was waiting out there in these miserable conditions. But the bedroom door was closed and Jessica would find something odd in finding a door she locked, open with me missing.
--
Her cell phone began beeping, it's painful noise echoed through the room, amplifying it before it reached my ears. Jessica opened the bathroom door with a thin layer of steam escaping behind her as she reached for her phone. Her other hand held on to the towel wrapped cleverly beneath her arms, she put the speaker beneath her wet hair and questioned a greeting in an underlying aggrevated tone.
" Hello?" she answered, instantly pacing to the other side of the room. She choked back a laugh after a short silence and unlocked the bedroom door to open it." I'm sorry. I didn't think you'd be here this early." She said as I followed her to the front door.
A tall, thin man immediately stepped through the doorway and closed the small umbrella he was holding. His hair was long and dirt-blonde and it was visible beneath his shirt that he was rail-thin." What's up Alks?" Smoke trailed from his mouth as he spoke to me in a light, rustic voice.
" Sorry I couldn't get to the door Jason. I was busy still getting ready." Jessica apologized as she closed the door and took the umbrella from his hand.
" Oh, hi Jessica. I didn't see you there." Jason playfully greeted before he put the cigarette in his mouth and inhaled.
" Hehe, you jerk." Jessica smirked as she playfully pushed Jason away and walked back through the living room. I followed her into her bedroom and fell back onto the bed as she continued into the bathroom and closed the door.
I gazed up at the ceiling blankly as the rain outside filled my ears. It was soothing enough to let me return to my thoughts of my problem outside.
--
" Whatcha thinking of?" Jason asked from the doorway, the cigarette missing from between his fingers. I looked up at him with the best expressionless expression I could come up with as he walked over and sat down beside me.
Jason was one of the few people I had to be the most aware of. He was signed up to take a multitude of psychology classes in college, even made it his major. You know, all the knowledge about knowledge. Being able to read people, get inside their mind. Constant ponders never left the top of his head work.
He already saw it, had I not kept the thoughts of going outside oppressed." It's alright, you can tell me." He said as he layed back across from me.
He's been over several times since I've been here and he's taken every chance to prove he was right. He's stubbornly repetitive, continually asking me to speak. Although the method seemed as a catch-22. Either I would be a brainless moron and not respond to Jason, or have the knowledge to understand the consequences and still remain quiet.
--
" Are you still stuck on the idea that Alex can think?" Jessica finally spoke up as she walked out of the bathroom.
" I could never give that up. There's no way that he's more human than fox and not have the mental capacity that goes with it." Jason answered over me. Generally he would've been correct, but I have seen some smart counterparts to my species.
Jessica settled down on the bed upon my other side unoccupied and I leaned into her hand as she soflty rubbed my ears." I can never believe that. Alex has always behaved the same since I first found him."
" But he's been away from his natural life for too long. He no longer knows what actions are normal."
I decided that it was best for me to be away from this discussion before it became too uncomfortable being the center of attention. I slowly stood up and walked into the hall.
" Something's changed, Jessica." Jason's voice followed me into the living room."Alex doesn't seem too fond of company, as if he'd rather avoid it. But I've watched the foxes in the forest across from here. They seem to gather together more than often."
--
I managed to maintain ear contact from the kitchen as I decided against acting playfully by popping my food pellets one-by-one and bit into the top of the pile. The voices were distorted by the walls, but I heard the main points.
" What do you mean 'more than often?.... They don't usually group together?......."
" They aren't behaving like the ones I read about..... The fact that he no longer seems attatched to anyone. He was probably left behind for a reason."
" Why would they?"
" I don't understand anymore."
Neither do I....
