Split Souls: Standing Together
#8 of Split Souls
I'll have to go back and edit again likely, and I'll add more tags unless someone wants to help with that.
Lunch was held in a smaller hall within the palace and only family was admitted to discuss what was happening. Cassandra was sitting alone near the head of the table with a chair on each side empty. On her right around the corner sat the High Lord and Lady while Drentan and her other sibling sat across the table with the exception of Alexander who seemed to have been given a seat one over from Cassie's left.
The food was served and Cassie tried to ignore much of the hard or strange looks she got when the discussions began. Nessandra was quick to bring up the rewards for Jared which Lord Marverath stated would be given. He knew already of Jared's efforts to create a house and stated that a suitable title and lands would be set out. There were several quite jokes and snide comments that went around the table with that caused Cassandra to growl and speak for the first time.
"Whatever title my father chooses, even if it is Lord of the Burnt Fields, he will be a LORD with all the rank and privilege. But calling him Lord of Runaways or Running Away is inaccurate unless you believe I Walked out of the palace and that he wasn't the one who risked his life to save Nessandra!"
Speaking quietly in the silence Jared added. "Also I left River Rush because I had a life I needed to take care of. Oh, Lady Lindara I have items at the vault at Rushlin Hotel and I wanted to inquire about my apartment and where I might store things."
Lady Lindara stayed silent as did the entire hall before Drentan finally spoke. "We did have your apartment and items moved along with contacting your school, job, and others with Master Maximillian's help. Yesterday we spoke at length and he had quite a bit of information about what happened after the accident. As for the rest of your inheritance, everything should be transferred to the Imperial Bank by the end of the month and we can pick up the items from the hotel at any time. Now for formalities sake I assume I have your permission to continue research into the accident and what happened afterwards. The courts have been adamant about holding some records until you're an adult but I can force the issue with your agreement since Cassandra is still underage and I have the High Lord's permission." The tod had rattled off the entire speech rather quickly leaving Cassie to just nod a response for him before clearing her throat to speak.
"He will have access to the collection when it's transferred right? We have to meet with Lord Callen over the coins he wishes to add."
"Cassandra are you familiar with Jared's collection?" The High Lady suddenly asked.
"Of course mother." She quickly answered.
There was a significant pause before she continued causing Cassie to be on the alert. "Daughter I need to know that you understand enough to speak about his coins or others without pausing every few seconds to check with him."
'She still doesn't understand.' Jared stated. 'No this is something different don't ask me how, but it is.'
She was still thinking when the Lady Lindara interrupted her with a sharp tone. "Cassandra!"
"Why?" Jared asked.
"Because I want to know if she capable of handling yourself without you Jared! I don't need to see her drifting off every time someone asks her a question!"
'Now. Together, strong and clear.' "He/She knows what I know. We grew up together and studied together." They continued to speak together even as the High Lady tried to insist speaking with her daughter.
"You don't choose one of us, when you speak with one, you are speaking with both." The two were still quietly exchanging thoughts Cassie coming up with a plan while Jared spoke. "If we disagree you will hear us both, Lady Lindara." He finally changed just his head to match his voice. "What am I to you... or this family?"
"Jared you are a guest, an honored guest but we can talk about this later." She replied. At Cassie's insistence he closed his eyes carefully picking at the ties and strings holding the court gown up before he fully changed wiggling a little to get the cloth to settle.
"That isn't good enough. Princess Cassandra states you will either accept both of us or you will not see her again."
It took a moment for the High Lady to answer after she had taken a long look at her husband. "Young man you are NOT in a position to make any such statement. To even think you can keep us from our daughter is outrageous."
"This isn't just me." Jared started before Cassie spoke nearly shouting. "You don't or won't understand a thing. I won't be seen again because I choose not to not because Jared says so." The entire room was silent except for an occasion shift everyone pausing and waiting.
"I can not force her to appear nor will I ask her to, we agreed to be together. She wants you to accept me as a member of the family.. at the very least treated as a half brother."
"THAT won't Happen! You don't have the blood, family ties, you're not even worth mentioning when it comes to common class!" He couldn't see who spoke down the table, and it was Cassie's anger more than his that made him respond.
"Tell that to my Father! But I have something he never did, the soul of Cassandra Reylexion inside and the magic we created lets her change my entire body to be a royal princess and the twin of Nessandra. So I DO have royal blood, I DO have family ties, and if my father and mother had lived I would be known!"
"Not to mention he is worth thousands, possibly millions before any reward we give him." Nessandra added in. He could feel Cassie crying out 'WAIT!' as his eyes locked on hers. The second princess gave a small head shake as she opened her mouth again. "Also I renew my offer of marriage to the man who returned my sister. This is an offer ONLY." She had to raise her voice at the end to be overheard from the muttering and voices.
"Daughter...." Lord Marverath's voice silenced the table. "Why would you do this?"
"To keep my promise, to offer hope, and to give an option where there might otherwise be none." She replied.
After nearly a minute of silence waiting for further explanation Jared and Cassie again spoke together. "You still don't understand. We are two and one." "You can't have one.." Jared started. "With out the other." Cassie finished.
"What is it that you want?" It was sort of a surprise to them to hear Drake's question making them think back to the study when the High Lord had asked the same question.
It took several seconds but they worked out an answer together. "Acceptance."
"That may not be easy for anyone at this table. Except for Nessandra." He added with her light growl. "Now don't get too upset, but what are you except a young man with an extra soul that has been lost for a dozen years. True it maybe my sister's soul but that doesn't necessarily make her a princess and even with the title what does that mean. She has not performed any duties or services for this family or country. No offense but Cassandra's rights and privileges would come from being a princess and Jared returned a soul.. not a body."
Cassie came close to exploding. "Then which of us do you wish to punish?! Me for being imprisoned for the past twelve years or Jared because I won't let him sacrifice his entire life for me? All I really want is to make sure he has as much of a life as I do. I want to make sure he isn't forced to hid in some corner every time he comes out. Besides brother, soul or not don't you and the rest of this family have an obligation. I was NOT protected as a child, my family could at least TRY to offer me and Jared some help now."
Now that the heart of the mater had been spoken on both sides each with valid arguments everyone waited to see how the High Lord would respond. "I said once before that until I make a decision Jared would be treated as a member of the family, there are several in this room who make that claim with a mere trace of linage on old papers. I would accept the fact he will need to be treated as such because he would not be allowed to stay in the palace otherwise. However Cassandra he is not my child, half or otherwise, nor can he be given the rights and privileges of the royal line. With time we will decide how to proceed but you both must know there are places the princess will be allowed and Jared will not."
'They won't ever understand.' She growled at him. 'Relax Cassie, I still have a few ideas. We can let it go for now.' He thought back at her looking over at Nessandra before turning back to Lord Marverath. "We are both tired is there somewhere we can rest?"
Lady Lindara quickly answered. "Cassandra still has rooms which have been refreshed but we haven't yet decided on a place for you Jared."
"I can rest there." He stated with Cassie silently urging he added. "We will need adjoining rooms."
"Sleep in the princesses room?!!" A voice called out shocked. "You ask for some male to sleep next door to a princess, NO ONE is going to allow That!" Another called out right after. Cassie only had eyes for her mother staring hard through Jared as several other family members began calling out, voicing their protests.
When things quieted Cassie stood up for Jared stating, "I believe I remember my way." ~ "We only need a nap I'm sure both of us will be ready to talk more in a few hours." Jared stated almost apologetically. They were both more than a little surprised to find several foxes had stood blocking their way to prevent them from leaving.
"You will need to let THEM go, not him, THEM! Jared is allowed within Cassandra's rooms because she is taking him there. As for some stupid thoughts of virtue or modesty forget them. They both have had plenty of time to examine each others bodies." 'NESSANDRA!' The shout tried to interrupt her. "They share one body when they sleep, eat, walk, or dress they do it together.... You can no more stop him from being in her rooms than you can stop her from wearing his clothes. It is going to happen and it is wrong to force on them some stupid and irrelevant idea." Cassie changed just enough so that it looked like her head and paw so when she growled holding up a glowing hand several of those in front of her backed off and she took several steps forward before a path finally started to appear.
The trip to her room was basically uneventful once she got out of the hall. The only exception was that she had to change and ask for directions as to which of the two hallways she should have taken and exactly how many doors down were her rooms. As Cassie predicted they barely had time to inspect her living space, a nice sized main room with a small table and chairs, a desk built in with shelves above and a elegant couch that took up more than half of one wall were the door to her bedroom was before Lady Lindara showed up wishing to speak with her daughter. Moments later she order him to change so she could speak with Cassandra instead of him.
"I am right here mother, what does it matter what I look like."
"It matters more than you know! The next week you will have to make Dozens of appearances here, in the court, and beyond. You don't have the luxury of hiding, not if you wish to call yourself my daughter!"
"And will Jared be allowed around the palace and in the courts?" Cassie asked.
"Eventually, we will have to make you two seem separate then we..."
"NO! Here." Cassie yanked the crest coin from the pocket almost tearing it out trying to force her mother to take it. "One body, TWO sides. We will use that so the rest know who is talking and when. I will not allow you to hide him away. You know what I don't understand about all of this is how he in a sense kept me safe for all these years, nearly sacrificed his life for me, he did nearly end up dead trying to save Nessandra and none of you have bothered to thank him beyond a couple of words. Even with all he's done you don't want him here and..."
"Of course I DON'T!!" Lady Lindara burst out reaching out and grabbing Jared's muzzle. "I want my daughter who was taken from me! I want to watch her grow up and do all the things that Nessandra and I did together. Don't EVER think I will be happy knowing you were killed and they were going to try and use you against us."
Her small tirade was like a whip against Cassie lashing out and making her cringe and back away from it's intensity. Sensing her falter Jared stepped in and asked. "What do you mean?"
She studied him for a moment before letting go and stepping back taking a full moment before answering. "Drake has found out several things and he believes he knows where Cassandra's body is, or might be. If he's right, well there are several things we still need to check. Either way," The High Lady paused looking up and down Jared once again. "Both of you maybe in danger. Until we can legitimately prove Cassandra is my daughter or at least make the court accept her both of you are going to be in danger. Honestly I can't offer full protection to you Jared, but I CAN to Cassandra. Both of you should understand that for right now it's best to let Princess Cassandra be seen and guarded as a royal member of the ruling house. She needs to be seen and heard so that everyone will accept that she is Lady Cassandra, and right now that means you MUST be silent."
"She can have this week." He finally responded. "Wait! I want your promise mother that you will let Jared have time and a life. I won't take away what is not mine, without him you wouldn't have me at all." Cass added in.
Giving a little sigh the older vixen headed to the door of the sitting room. "You are more right than you know, but not for the reasons you think. Maximilian probably saved you both from a very unpleasant end. I expect to see my daughter dressed properly at dinner and I need you to stay with your guards at all times. They will be waiting for you outside when you leave."
Jared was standing staring at the unclosed door when it seemed his whole body vibrated from an unvoiced growl. 'What?' ~ 'She didn't answer!' He walked over to the sofa and sat down pushing back and finding it very comfortable. 'What do you want to do?'
'Relax, I do feel a little tired... It seems we might be a little late for dinner.' Jared felt his body stand up and head to the bedroom looking over the elegant bed and checking out the seriously over sized wardrobe. Cassie showed a great deal of interest in the dresses and clothes and he shook his head while she laughed in the background. 'We should get changed.'She sang out undoing several of the buttons on the side of the court dress with him protesting. 'Come on we have to take this off anyways.' She stated while he tried to button himself back up.
She directed him to an alcove with tall mirror on the wall and watched as she grabbed a handle and slid out another mirror creating a partial box. This time he didn't object as she stripped him down. For the first time Jared sat back and allowed Cassie to fully inspect his body. It wasn't like they hadn't seen it all before but this was the first time either of them had access to mirrors that allowed them to see all the way around the back looking over the black, gray, and white streaked patterns that were on his body. 'You look good.' She complimented him suddenly glancing back to see his privates were more than a little raised. 'Your turn?'Jared asked trying not to sound too eager.
As they changed there was a near mirrored smirk that they both wore as Cassie raised up her arms. Jared stopped himself as he realized they had been staring at her privates for several seconds. He looked back up staring into the vibrant eyes that returned his gaze. After a moment the head made a slight nod and the pair began to truly inspect her body. As they turned to the side Jared noticed her chest wasn't as flat as he thought, hands dropped down and gripped the breasts finding a good full paws worth. It was almost together they imagined her in a long gown drawn tight to the chest and waist but looser in the hips flowing down to the floor.
'Mother would never allow it.' Cassie stated. Jared continued examining her body checking out her backside and rear using one paw to rub over her rump. When they turned back forward he moved their hand around to the front but was forcibly stopped inches from touching her privates. "I do believe it's your turn." She spoke quietly staring into the mirror intently. 'You can't think...'
Cassie's little grin faded into Jared's unsure expression as the paw suddenly moved again grabbing a hold of his penis and giving a few good squeezes after they changed. "Cassie." He whispered. 'Last time we worked together, this time I want to do it alone, and I'll let you do it alone next time.'She added on the incentive. He shivered getting full goosebumps that made his hair raise up his arms as she stroked his hardening shaft several times, his answer was to draw back and allow her full control.
She moved his body to the end of the bed and sat down before he gave the simple reminder that sent her to the bathroom searching through the shelves. What she found was a small jar with some kind of gel in it that was slick between her fingers and had a heavy floral scent. He tried to wait patiently letting her keep control flipping back the covers and laying down. She took it slower than he wanted, gently rubbing his belly and stroking near his privates making his body twitch in anticipation. With one paw she used two fingers to gently stroke the shaft with the gel which easily coated and slicked him up, tweaking the tip when she finished.
Jared had gotten used to his body moving on its own and he had masturbated many times but the feeling of Cassie in control of his paws was entirely different. She knew what he liked rubbing and ruffling his tummy fur as the other paw stroked up and down his shaft, but without the control it was a wildly different ride for him. He couldn't help but thrust into his own paw which she allowed giving him a solid squeeze in response making their body heat up and begin to softly pant.
Not caring now about where he was Jared moaned then gasped our her name. "Cassieee, uh.. faster." She picked up speed feeling fluid drip across her paw which seemed to increase to a little dribble the faster she went. He felt his eyes open and his head tilt down seeing the rapid rise and fall of his chest and beyond that his paw that sped up and down his penis, he was so close.
Cassie could feel as much as Jared could but it felt like there was a pane of glass or maybe a mirror that reflected his emotions back at her. The feelings were close to peaking when she realized she still had control of another paw that wasn't doing anything now but resting on the bed as Jared again lifted his hips trying to push harder into the paw she controlled.
As she reached in and cupped his balls he gave a gasp of surprise followed by a heavy grunt as he pushed his hips off the bed and began to spent his load over his chest. Cassie soaked up the feeling of his release as his member continued spitting suddenly noticing the twitch of his testicles that seem to accompany his spurts.
Sticky and dripping slightly Cassie moved their paw to rest against their thigh feeling the drain on the body as Jared continued panting. It caught her by surprise when again she was suddenly pressed tight feeling her counterpart all around her. He drew them together holding her with every bit he could sending simple emotions of pleasure, gratitude, and contentment. With a small shiver of excitement that felt like her own he voiced one strong thought. 'My turn next right?' As he slid away she suddenly felt something different, another presence. With a half scream she rolled them away trying to cover them with blankets as Cassie took control and began changing their body.
"Well that was... something." Jared went cold hearing the voice as Cassie flashed out in anger.
"GET OUT!!" She yelled at her twin who was standing in the door.
"Well I'm not the one who forgot to lock the door. Besides I was asked to come here and help make sure you're ready for dinner." They could both see that Nessandra was uninterested in leaving.
'Bathroom.' Jared mentally hissed feeling Cassie wanting to throw something at her twin, including herself. He was relieved that she listened rolling across the bed and storming to the bathroom slamming the door.
He kept his mind and feelings as blank as possible allowing Cassie to growl and fume as she took a shower. Near the end he asked if he could clean up too almost starting an argument even though he promised to be quick. She still grumbled in his head as Jared now considered a brand new fact. It took several minutes but he took some fur soap and washing the semen off his chest. He knew Cassie wasn't paying attention and kept his thoughts to himself as he tried to quickly dry tossing away the wet towel when he was done and grabbing a clean one as he transferred control back to Cassie. As his other half furiously rubbed her soaked fur dry Jared marveled at the oddity but decided to keep his observations quiet for now since she was still so wound up over her twin.
"What are we going to do?" She finally asked him.
He stopped himself just short of answering something foolish like, she's your sister, and instead chose, 'Nothing. It's done, we'll just have to be more careful in the future... unless you want her to watch.'
"Don't even Start!" She growled out loud. 'Well she caught us and there really is nothing we can do unless you want to tell your mother.' He shared the chill those words brought as she wrapped up in a slightly wet towel and stepped back into the bedroom. Nessandra had taken the time to set out three dresses on the cross rods that were on the wall next to the mirrored alcove.
"I'm sorry... I should have left. It was just that, I couldn't help myself. Not only watching you but feeling the difference. Usually I can tell if it's you or Jared but... Watching Jared was different. It took me several minutes to realize you were umm, moving his paws. I had planned to slip out when you finished but then everything changed." Nessandra paused stepping forward to stare at her sister, "I felt him. I felt both of you for just a moment." She spoke quietly placing her paw on their chest.
"We, we are getting closer together." Jared spoke out.
"I felt you Jared, just for a moment. I can always feel Cass here and there, a little feeling, an image. The closer she is and the harder I try the easier it gets but... I could feel you."
'What do we do?' Jared asked feeling somewhat worried. 'Nothing.' "I am unpleased that you watched us. It was supposed to be private and you Knew IT! You said you would give me time but then you're telling everyone that you will honor you offer of marriage. Now you watch us and tell me you can sense him. Ness Back Off!"
What happened wasn't a surprise but the words startled them both as Nessandra hugged her sister tight. "Cassandra and Jared. I can't have one without the other, I accept that. I want you both. I want to hug my sister and talk and laugh. Then I want to laugh with Jared, kiss, and hold hands. Even if I forced mom and dad to accept him they will stall a marriage for years trying to make me take someone else. I know you love him Cass, as much as you would love your brother or me, that much I can sense. I'm not trying to pressure you, but I love you and if I'm gonna love you I'll have to love Jared as well. I Will take BOTH of you." When she pressed her muzzle against her twins lips she held it for just a few seconds too long before stepping back to stare in her sisters eyes.
Willing to risk Cassie's anger at that moment he leaned out and gave just a light lick to the side of Nessandra's muzzle causing her to giggle. "Thank you Jared." She continued over Cassie's light growl. "So what do you want to wear?"
Rather than answer she pushed her twin towards the bed and made her sit. Taking a seat herself she spent the next hour talking with both Nessandra and Jared wanting to work out an agreement that she could accept. They both felt Cassandra's reluctance but when pressed the older sister couldn't truly explain more than being uncomfortable with the two of them being together.
"Well what about me?" Nessandra asked, "We could have some fun and be together, nothing more than what you're ready for, and Jared would have to promise to stay out of it." Cassie huffed and shook her head at her twin as Jared tried to put out his feelings.
'Can I ask you a question? Whatever you choose I will respect. I just want to know if I did find a girl I liked are you, will I always have to ask for permission? I mean if it's my time and my body I should be able to do what I want.' "You already know the answer!" She quickly put her hand over her mouth waving a paw at her sister. 'I know... It's our body, but..'
She cut him off letting out a big sigh. "Alright I give up!" Letting out a big squeal Nessandra launched herself at her sister holding her tight and kissing her as they fell backwards onto the bed. "I love you Cass." she whispered in her twins ear. Jared took over with his voice. "Me too, which is why I think you two should be together. You both slept together before. We can all take it slow."
"I have several toys we could play with." Nessandra spoke mischievously. "Oh relax," She stated quickly afterwards feeling her twin balk. "I doubt any of us will have much time to spend together. Mother is planning like it's a royal event... Just give us a chance and let's see what happens."
The twins arrived at dinner late walking into the great hall through the main doors. They offered no apologies as they made their way through the large dinning area and the quiet conversation and stares that watched them pass. Most of the family sat at the three long tables at the far end and they nodded to those that looked their way but most seemed concentrate on eating almost like they were ignoring them. Neither the High Lord or Lady said anything either as they moved around the table coaxing Nicholas to changed chairs so they could sit together.
Soon after they started eating Alexandria, who was again in a full dress, told them that their father was upset because they had missed their introduction. There were dozens of people who approached the royal families tables during the meal, many stopping to speak with several different family members, and many gave a glance in Cassandra's direction but none stopped to speak sensing the High Lord's displeasure at his daughters.
That was why it came as a small surprise when Lord Callen stepped forward going directly to the twins. "I see the royal family is again whole. Very surprising news I heard this afternoon concerning you first princess." Whether he actually knew or just made an educated guess he did address the right vixen as he spoke and gave a formal bow.
"It is good to see you again Lord Callen. The two of us eagerly await being able to speak to you again especially since you believe it will be a most interesting meeting." Cassandra replied.
"Most interesting indeed! Would you do me the honor of a more personal meeting between the two of you. I admit I am highly curious to hear your story in full." The Shepard stated.
"I'm sorry I have no clue as to when I might actually have some time to accept your offer, but I would be most glad too."
"Wonderful. I know the High Lady would be wiling to help figure out when. My entire family would be pleased to meet you." After another formal bow the lord moved away.
A few second later Nessandra let out a little groan. "Just be careful of his son. Mother has tried to push us together a few times."
"I'll make sure he hears me." Jared muttered back quietly. The meal ended soon after and as the twins were leaving they were pulled aside.
"Follow Me." Cassie looked at here sister questioningly feeling serious irritation as they followed the tod. "You two really screwed up. You think you can make this family look foolish? I don't know what you think..."
"Steven, dear cousin, Shut UP!" Nessandra stated firmly. The male looked back glaring at the princess but kept his mouth shut as he led them.
'Jared, be careful and think carefully.' Cassie suddenly advised as they were lead into a small parlor area with eight other adult foxes including the High Lord, Lady, and First Prince. Steven shut the door firmly behind them. "Here they are." He announced with a snide tone.
Cassandra was the one who took the lead. "Is there something you wish to talk about?"
"You know well what is wrong. Your father looked foolish standing there announcing to all how you had been returned and where were you?? GONE!" She glanced over at the glaring vixen acknowledging her words with a small nod.
"I see, perhaps it would have been wise to send someone to tell me that."
"Or me." Nessandra finally spoke. "I was only asked to help her dress not to rush back for dinner."
"Daughter you had several hours, you should have been on time." The High Lady stated.
"Part of that was my fault, we all got to talking." Jared admitted suddenly receiving the full attention from the room that was full of frowns for his action.
"We probably could have tried on less dresses." Cassie added.
Her words caused several glances around the room. "Nessandra, that wasn't the same dress you were wearing at lunch." It was Drake who made the observation.
"No." She answered with a little smile at her brother. 'Get ready.' Cassie warned. "But it's not something that they both haven't seen anyways."
There was only a few seconds of silence before Lord Marveroth spoke, "Explain exactly what you mean Nessandra." He demanded.
"Simple. Cass and I have changed together before and they both see."
"He has seen you naked!!?" One of the others demanded. The twins shared a quick feeling before Cassie asked Jared to answer.
"I have seen both of them." Everyone in the room ended up glancing at one another before Lady Lindara spoke.
"Has my daughter seen you naked?"
'Careful.' Cassie advised again. "If you want the truth then yes they both have. I'm afraid we forgot to lock the door after you left and Nessandra waked in on us. As for Cassandra she has seen me my entire life."
The tone was quiet and very dangerous, "And what were YOU doing naked in my daughters room?"
Feeling Jared recoil Cassie stepped in. "That is personal mother and none of your concern." Even as she was finishing one male growled.
"Dirty little bastard was jacking off in her room!!"
"ENOUGH! They were working off some stress and Cass was doing most of the work." Nessandra left the room stunned. "I happened to walk in on them finishing. We have repeated mentioned the fact they do EVERYTHING together. As far as why WE were late it's simple. The three of us were talking and then Cass and I were trying on several dresses."
"I believe a good deal is going to have to change. Perhaps you are in need of a nurse maid if you are going to act like stupid children." Lord Marverath spoke. It was a war of anger as Jared tried to keep Cassie's feeling contained while her twin shouted out against such treatment. Finally getting enough control he placed a paw on Nessandra's shoulder giving her a quick side hug when she finally stopped causing a few growls around the room from such an intimate action between the twins.
"Curiosity and exploration are supposed to be natural, but even if we were to set that aside, I AM and Adult, and Cassandra is no child! What we do with our body, on our bed, is really no concern for any of you. I know you wouldn't treat you other children this way so don't bother trying it with us. You're right Lord Marverath a great deal is going to change starting with your ignorance. I have no plans on mutilating my body just to make you understand." Jared's words silenced the room but as he continued to glare at the High pair they began scowling back. "Your daughter is part of my body, just as I am part of hers now. There is no switch to turn me off and her on, both of us are here. I think the two of you should think, then talk it over. You do have another son whether you want one or not, because HALF of what I am is your daughter."
"Another set of twins only this time a boy and girl joined at the hips." Nessandra suddenly put in. "How do you expect to separate them if you can't cut them apart."
The silence after her words seemed to confuse several and Nessandra hugged her sister, "At the very least the two of you should NOT be exchanging dresses together." Drentan spoke out getting the rooms full approval. This caused the twins to hold each other a little tighter as their mother put in.
"Yes you both are far to old to be dressing each other, or sleeping together."
"Again you choose to be bad parents." Jared quickly spoke out for the twins. "You said yourself you wanted me gone and to have your daughter back with the time you lost. Imagine how they both feel trying to catch up on years of separation. Why don't you just say the truth, you don't trust either of them."
"It's you we can't trust." Someone blurted out as he finished.
"No he's right." Nessandra spoke. "Totally right. Jared can't force Cass or me so it must be us you don't trust, and maybe you shouldn't. I was totally serious when I said I would marry him. The person who saved my life, the one who holds my other half, even the one who has already started to help Alex even though they just met; compared to the others he is the best choice. If I thought bearing his child would secure his future I doubt any of you could stop me, the real problem is Cassandra. She isn't comfortable with anything like that so we spent the afternoon talking everything over. That and none of you have been waiting twelve years hoping she would return. I won't lose her again and none of you is going to be able to stop me from keeping her close. You can try to restrict me Mother, Father but you had better be ready to use full force."
"And here we thought you were a proper princess. Both of you should know your place. It's not just some common house but royal blood that runs through your body..."
Nessandra interrupted the older vixen, "Don't lecture me on stupid things such as royal duty when you only hold to such things when you want. The ties to my twin are stronger than any other, Country, Family, Honor, event the Purelight mean nothing compared to her and I don't care what you think about her being just a soul either brother. I have suffered everyday, worse when so many of you tried to force me or told me to move on."
"I wasn't going to say anything." Drentan quickly stated when she stopped on him rather than glaring around the room.
"You have." She replied.
"Yes because it needs to be said. We are going to have a great deal of trouble getting most of the other houses to accept her. Just saying she is Cassandra isn't enough." Drake tried to explain.
"Would placing my body on display be enough?" Cassie asked easily stunning the room.
"You? How..." The first prince glanced at his father for a moment before taking a deep breath. "We're not even sure if it is your body, but if it is perhaps moving it and burying it here will have more impact."
"I would like to know what you have found... later of course." Jared spoke.
Drake looked back at his father seemed to draw the rest of the rooms attention to the High Lord. "I suppose I should have expected that, and the others." He stated cryptically. "From now on I expect the two of you on time to meals announced or not. Cassandra we are going to need you seen and heard for right now which means Jared needs to stay quiet. I don't mind if you speak to each other in private, but in public my daughter needs to be seen."
'Just agree.' Jared was urging her especially since she had her muzzle firmly pressed closed frowning. "Silencing someone is not an easy thing to do, although for now we will try. Just remember this is only for right now."
"Good." Lady Lindara spoke. "Now I don't expect to EVER hear of you exposing yourself to anyone Jared! Especially not my daughter. I understand earlier with Nessandra was an accident but you will control yourself." After several seconds of silence she asked. "Do you understand?"
Cassie waited several more seconds just because, "He's wondering if this is private enough to speak or would you like the message relayed."
The vixen gave the slightest twitch before stating, "If I ask him a question then yes I expect an answer."
"I understand what you are saying. I will try to do as you ask for now."
"Young man when the High Lady gives an order you OBEY not hand out half a promise." It was Steven this time who spoke.
"We will not make impossible promises nor will we live here if Jared is going to remain trapped inside. There is no way we can coexist with him not exposing himself to me. As he said we will try to do as asked for now." Cassie kept her voice calm even as Nessandra rubbed her arm feeling the anger and irritation she was suppressing.
The meeting ended soon after with the pair first having to listen to an explanation on what their mother deemed appropriate and being alone especially naked together wasn't one of them. It was perfectly fine for the twins to spend time together as long as it was in a less personal setting, not that Cassie had much time to herself over the next two weeks. She was constantly being sent somewhere, either sitting in at court, having lunches and meetings at the palace, or even times when she felt like she was being paraded around the courtyards and walkways of the palace grounds. Only once so far had she been allowed down to the city for an elegant dinner party at Lord Merden's home. At least there she had been allowed a little more leeway and even answered a few questions concerning Jared since he had been specifically ordered to keep quiet.
Realizing that he was going to be ignored until they forced the matter Cassie finally insisted he be given the next week. The idea was of course countered until the pair finally locked themselves in their room the next day. They finally got permission when Cassie demanded Jared's clothes be sent to her apartment because they wouldn't wear anything else, and that if necessary she would make a search for them herself in the buff. Forced to take control of the situation Lady Lindara set up a small guest room telling them that Jared would be allowed the night and the next day only.
After they changed Cassie began plotting ways they might get him noticed and where they might be able to go. 'Father still said you were to be treated as a family member.' She reminded him. 'Yes but going to court really isn't going to help much is it. Besides I told you I think I know what to do.' ~ 'Which is? You still haven't told me.' "That's because I'm waiting to see how they treat me." He finally told her after dinner when her pestering had made him slip. Jared had been allowed to eat with the family in the smaller dining hall but it had been a small meal, half the table had been empty, and he had been seated by himself near the very end.
'You're Leaving!??' He cursed himself silently for thinking of Rushlin Terrace. 'Maybe.' He could suddenly feel her grin as she leaned on pressing them together giving a wordless support and approval. 'How?' It was his turn to grin making sure not to think anything about his plans. Jared had come to realize the dominate soul had a hard time concealing anything while being in control, while the other could stay back hiding thoughts and images with out the other even knowing. He had spent the last two weeks watching the back hallways and corners along with the less used paths while Cassandra was lead around and shown where things were. He was able to keep his other half at bay until bed telling her that it would all depend on how things went in the morning and she would just have to wait.
Morning found the pair dressed and excited entering into the small parlor area where they had been having breakfast since their arrival.
"You, shouldn't, be, here." Young Nicholas sang out as he stepped towards the table.
"That is correct." Drake stated flatly. "This table is for our family only."
Jared kept a tight hold on Cassie as he carefully replied. "I see, could you tell me where I am supposed to eat?" Drake paused long enough to look over at Alexander the only other person present at the moment looking very sullen and downcast in a pair of pants. "The High Lord and Lady are busy today and I believe Nessandra has been asked to help."
It wasn't even an attempt at an answer and with Nicholas giving off light giggles here and there they both figured this was set up to happen this way. He stood there waiting another minute before repeating his question using the exact same words. "I don't know. I'm sure if you asked around someone will tell you where."
As Jared turned to leave Alex finally spoke. "Jared I was hoping we could talk later." With Cassie muttering darkly about her mother he tried to clear his head enough to answer.
"You can speak with me any time Prince Alexander, I told you that before. But both your sister and I will be busy today, perhaps tomorrow." Waiting a few seconds on a reply that didn't come he left.
Jared spent nearly two hours cornering several dozen servants and checking various eating areas. All seemed to be empty and no one had any information they seemed willing to give. Finally searching the actual kitchens he was informed that nothing would be given out until lunch. He refused to allow Cassie to make a royal order and politely asked where lunch would be served getting another reply that was less than helpful.
He ended up walking back through the dining hall and out into the halls stepping to the side where he figured no one would see them. 'Do you believe they failed?' ~ 'They are trying to make sure you don't want to come out again.' She spat out mentally. 'Cassie, it's breakfast, well almost lunch now, but that isn't what I'm asking. Did they fail? I'm supposed to be treated like a member of the family and I'm still a few weeks from being a legal adult.' That was something he had found out recently and that nearly cost him everything he owned because he had taken everything before he turned eighteen. 'I am supposed to be under the guidance of the royal family... so Did they Fail?'
'Yes.' Cassie answered still not quite sure what he was getting at. 'So then if I say it's time to show them I have some independence you won't get upset?' Inside she grinned, 'Where are we going? They all know about Max and we don't have a car.' "Relax Cass I was thinking of somewhere a little closer." He spoke in his near silent voice while starting to walk again once again giving her a flash of the Rushlin Terrace again. She still questioned him as he went back to his room and changed wanting to wear something a little more suitable to his plans. He put on something he bought from Rachel's shop that more reflected inner city instead of palace and made the decision to keep the tracer ring on, after all he wasn't hiding, just going out for some breakfast.
That thought had Cassie in a fit of giggles, 'They didn't feed you so you _had_to go find food.' The idea amused her far more than Jared but he still felt it a valid reason. He was hungry and they refused to allow him to eat. Some kids ran away for far less and this would be one of the bigger gambles he could take.
Jared began sneaking down back hallways, he had already noticed no guards seemed to be keeping an eye on him. Likely they would be positioned at the main entrances and areas he was supposed to stay out of. Cassie on the other hand was trying to figure out where he was going as he moved along a corridor to one of the small gardens but she was shocked when he stepped into the flower bed and started climbing the wall. It didn't take much for him to scramble upwards finding hand holds and straddling the top of the blocks when he made it up. The way down though was going to be far more tricky, the smooth wall on the other side was nearly twice his height. Jared though seemed to have thought of this as well scooting down the wall until he was over a stone bench below. With his arms gripping the top and body dangling down it was just over a three foot drop to the bench.
Cassie marveled at how easily he slipped into one of the back entrances to the court building gaining little or no attention as he moved forward with purpose. The same attitude got him right on through and out the front and he slipped in behind a group of males heading for the stairs making it look like he was part of their group.
His escape seemed far to easy as he slowly trotted down the stairs. His mind had already picked out the closest restaurant and when he arrived he walked up and demanded a ride to be called. Although is clothes might be considered average near the palace his title was not, Lord of the Stone Gates. Whether or not they knew who Lord Jared was the Stone Gates were a well known area that was near the edge of the Mystalane Empire. He was quickly ushered inside sitting at a table near the front. Intent on waiting he was surprised by the wine and bread brought to his table and he tried to refuse both but they were left on his table.
After twenty minutes and repeated attempts to inquire about his health or needs Cassie took over for Jared causing a small scene when a bill was dropped on his table. He was swiftly pulled aside and facing the owner. "Sixty for a bottle of third rate wine and bread I NEVER asked for?!" She growled with his voice at the male.
"Sir, you obviously don't know prices of true wine, nor can you..."
"LORD Jared not sir." She interrupted him, "And I know the Cestor region including Rayshine vineyards has been suffering serious problems for the past few years. Don't try and fool me into thinking you broke out some ten year old bottle for a customer who never even ordered it." Jared was feeling as pale as the feline appeared to be as she continued to let him have it. "I asked for assistance in finding a ride and thought that your establishment was respectable enough to help, not try to rip me off."
"Umm sir?" The small ocelot made a near squeak as he tried to get their attention. "A car is ready."
"How long?" Cassie fired back causing the young one to cringe. "Don't bother lying I can always ask the driver."
"Aaahbout ten minutes." The voice ended in a squeak.
With a glare back to the owner she finished, "I am going to leave now. I assume you can cork your swill and pawn it off on someone else. IF you still have a problem you may contact Princess Cassandra and I WILL have her listen to your gripe!" She turned heading for the door only to end up stepping aside for a couple that was being shown in. "Lady Merina and Lord Marthin it is good to see you again." She stated with a nod tilting his ears back.
"Indeed." The other male half muttered while Lady Merina paused studying the ferret. "We've met?" She asked softly.
Cassie stopped suddenly backing off realizing the mistake and let Jared take over leaving him staring while she frowned. "Sorry, she shouldn't have said anything. I am Lord Jared of Stone Gates." He held out one closed paw giving a formal bow.
"Ah! It is my pleasure to finally meet you Lord Jared." She said placing her paw on his giving a bow in return. "Mee." Lord Marthin called for several tables away. "Yes Dear." She called back giving a slight head shake, "Such a blind fool sometimes, I hope the two of you don't mind, and my invitation hold for you as well Jared. Have a good day."
The pair stared as she made her way back to her husband. Jared entertained a notion of going and asking her for help before tossing the idea. This was time for him to move alone, proof that he didn't need to be here, nor did he need any help to leave, even the capitol if he chose. He wrote a script before entering the black windowed vehicle paying for the ride and leaving a tip for both the driver and the young valet.
On the way to Rushlin Terrace Cassie became restless, 'She knows I'm gone.' ~ 'Tell her you're safe!' He shot back. After several seconds passed she thought back, 'Are you really sure we need to do this?' He could feel she was asking more for his benefit but also hoping to understand what he was going to do. He began giving her bits of his hopeful plan and what he wanted to try and do. He added in he would be telling anyone who showed up after him that they were going to have to lock him up or allow him to live his life even if that was the High Lord or Lady. 'I agree we have to do something...' She stalled wondering if this might be more harmful for their future instead of helpful feeling another half query from her twin. 'I'm not putting us in any danger and of course I won't leave the city but she and the rest need to know I'm capable that it could be a real threat.' He stated thinking of her mother.'Besides I want to know how long it takes for them to even notice I'm gone.' It was a sort of grim thought that wondered if it was going to be right away or sometime tomorrow when someone might be looking for Cassie.
It was a bit of a shock at the hotel when Jared waked up to the counter and wrote out a script for ten grand demanding a secure suite with extra security and two personal guards. With in moments the owner appeared bowing as he urged his staff into action. Two guests were moved clearing the entire top floor and a short while later he found himself being served a five course lunch when he asked for food. They pair was put into a large three room suite with guards outside, at the hallway intersection, at the stairs, and finally at the elevator. Now all he had to do was wait.
That seemed to be the hardest part wondering what was coming and whom. They had spoken for several minutes with the owner making sure to explain he had left without telling anyone and he had no intention of returning this week. Cassie with Jared's voice put the owners fears at ease making sure he knew that no problems or issues would be visited on the hotel. All that she asked was for him to make sure he called when someone arrived, he was not to try and stop any palace guards or anyone who asked where they were, just make them identify themselves.
The call came just after dusk as Jared was considering ordering something to eat. Several vehicles had pulled up and dozens of palace guards were gathering outside. "Could you please have a meal sent up." 'Two people.' "Please make sure its enough for four."'Just in case.' He thought back.
The call was followed by a second not even a minute later. "The High Lady is coming up!" His voice sounded strained.
"You have nothing to fear. You are serving Princess Cassandra, my mother will not cause you a problem!" Cassie stated over the phone using her own voice. Jared headed for the couch but on her advice moved to the dining table instead. Solid wood and six chairs, functional and slightly elegant. 'Yes but this should be treated as negotiations not relaxation.' A battle of sorts, Jared suddenly couldn't agree more, lounging was not appropriate.
He sat waiting but not for long before a sharp rap sounded on the door and both sides opened allowing half a dozen guards in who quickly searched the rooms before the stood back by the door as Queen Lindara walked in staring at the ferret. "Please have a seat High Lady." Jared stated standing and bowing slightly.
"We are leaving. I am thankful you kept the ring on now..."
"WHAT makes you think WE are leaving." Cassie stated loudly. "I believe this will work best if you had a seat." Jared stated afterwards. "Besides I have a meal coming." Before he finished speaking noise was heard in the hall. "GUARDS if that is food you will allow them to pass." Cassandra barked out. The silence between the three stretched out as a cart was trundled in and several platters, bowls, and accompanying plates and utensils were set out.
After the two servers vanished and the door was shut Jared spoke again. "Forgive me Lady but unless you plan on trying to drag your daughter out the door kicking and screaming you might consider sitting down. Also I am rather insulted you had guards check the rooms. This hotel is perfectly capable of providing security and I would not put us in danger."
"You LEFT! With out an escort or notifying me, not even your guards knew where you were!" The tone was like acid slow and meant to burn away everything before it.
"Only AFTER YOU refused to provide me with the basic needs. What was I supposed to do STARVE?!!" Jared took a deep breath and it seemed his question made the vixen pause. "The problem is you High Lady not me. If you plan on being my guardian, then you had better accept the roll or expect me to live my own life!" Jared waved a paw towards the chair next to him and continued, "I was told I could NOT eat with your children, nor was I informed or told where or when I might be fed. I don't plan on missing another meal today so please have a seat!"
He glared at Lady Lindara as he took the cover off the tureen and ladled himself a bowl of soup. She did finally take a seat but at the opposite end of the table taking nothing but a glass of water. Cassie was correct in assuming it should be treated like negotiations although at first all they heard was a dictation of what he was and wasn't going to do.
"Do you actually expect me to return to the palace?" He finally asked receiving a hard glare for interrupting again. "Us Jared." Cassie added firmly taking over the head and changing it to her appearance. "Guard." She looked at the closest one. "Please grab the crest coin there and give it to my mother." Cassie was glad he had decided to pocket it before they left. "Your problem is that you wish to separate us. If you put that on the table hiding either side it doesn't cease to exist.. Telling Jared he can't go into the royal apartments or share a meal with the family is telling me the same thing. Just because you can't see me doesn't mean that I don't exist or worse that I can't hear and understand what is going on. It is obvious you are not going to truly listen, nor hear what we wish to tell you so let's make this clear. We both agree that he was wrong to leave the guards behind, and we agree that neither of us will try to leave the palace without an escort. Beyond that we agree to NOTHING! We aren't leaving when we finish this meal, we won't stay in Jared's room until we're told where to be and neither of us is going to consider returning until you can assure us that we both have a chance to live. I swore to him mother that I would not allow him to be put in a room and forgotten until Princess Cassandra was needed I won't...." She stopped as the High Lady held up one paw giving a small wave.
"That was not what we had planned. The High Lord wishes for him to be trained as a young noble would be. He will learn how to manage his estates and affairs even if it maybe a while before he will even be able to see them. There is a pressing need to have you seen and teach you what you need to know. Your birthday last year should have been one where you were officially recognized as being an eligible Lady and as I told you we will have to work out a charity event for you soon. You have less than three weeks left before your birthday, you don't have time to sulk in some hotel room."
"You think we are sulking?" Cassie asked very slowly.
"Next time I should leave the ring." Jared spoke.
"You think you're the first of my children to sneak out? All of them at one time or another thought to wonder off for one reason or another and honestly I don't have time to go running off after the two of you."
Both Jared and Cassie were thinking together as he took back full control. "You don't understand. This is not about your children, it is about me. I am NOT your child. I don't need your land or money. I don't have to stay at the palace nor do I have to even stay in this country. We left to try and show you that I could leave the ring and guards behind and be gone from the capital without even looking back." They were both trying to gage the High Lady who gave away nothing. "But that is me. I also made a promise to Cassie, that we would do everything together now because we have to share or lives and our body, our entire lives. I now have a family, and the only one who will even acknowledge that is Cass and Ness."
They could hear a small growl that quickly deepened. "You Don't have the right!"
Cassie waved Jared's paw like brushing away a fly as she spoke with his voice. "I have that right because I AM Princess Cassandra. You don't have any clue who it is you are really speaking with." As she spoke the voice changed to match her own. "Do you know how many times I've heard him call you mom or mother, not your mother, but mother. Not because you are his mother but because you are a mother to part of him. WE CAN'T be flipped like a coin so only one exists. You, Father, and everyone else have a decision to make. I'm not asking you to make him a member of the family but you will treat him like you would me because he is ME!" She sat glaring at her mother waiting for some response. It was long enough that he nudged her over and began eating again. The silence continued with the only actual noise coming from the ferret as he ate or one of the guards as they shifted position.
As he finally put down his fork done with eating he broke the silence, "We are not going back. I rented this room for the week and I will use it. Cassie asks if you can tell Nessandra she is welcome to stop by."
"And what about Cassandra's obligations?" Came the quiet question.
"This week is MINE. Besides I have my own obligations I need to take care of."
"You? What could you possibly need to do?"
Cassie spoke giving her mother a firm stare, "Lord Callen has approached me three times mother hoping to speak with him. There have been others as well who asked and offered more than just an invitation." ~ "Also I have deals to finish with Bervante and others. I do have my own inheritance to take care of."
"Interesting." The words caused the pair to stop.
"What?" Jared finally asked.
"Very interesting indeed. Perhaps I miscalculated in this."
"What Mother!" Cassie demanded.
"Your inheritance Jared, what exactly did your father leave you? Some nice trinkets, coins, or something more?" Lady Lindara asked.
"Some coins and treasures." Jared slowly answered.
"Come now child. I know you had quite a bit of bulk and weight transferred into the bank. I didn't question it before but if Lord Callen is interested I would imagine it's not just some coins and treasures." The older vixen had begun to watch intently waiting for a reply.
Cassie was warning caution and Jared asked if she would take over. "The collection is quite extensive holding mints from every coin Mystalane and other nations have created in the last centuries. Beyond that there are coins that are now among the most treasured in the world some..."
"And Cassandra, does she know which one is which?" The slight excitement was not lost as on the pair as she interrupted. "Yes." "No games Jared! Can Cass distinguish between rare coins without having to talk with you."
"I AM CASSANDRA!! Just because you cant see me doesn't mean I am not here!" She shouted. Cassie waited several seconds taking a breath before speaking. "He and I grew up together, we went through school together and learned together including what Uncle Max showed us. The only problem is most of the information we have on his collection was out of date. We haven't had the time to review much but I still know what coin comes from what land and at what time, I also know how to grade, appraise, and offer and opinion on a coin."
"Then if I spoke with Lord Callen and had a gala event preceding his show you would be able to host, without looking blankly waiting for Jared?" The High Lady questioned.
"The only time we look blank is when we are having a discussion and that is happening less." Cassie answered this time with her own voice.
"Not quite. You're getting much better at hiding it I agree, but I would like to know nothing like that is going to happen."
Jared pulled forward taking control again. "Lady Lindara, if you're asking me to sit back and be silent for one night I wouldn't have much of a problem with that." The pair watched as the older vixen gave a small scowl which turned into a full frown as she took a sip from her water pushing it away as she finished. "If you want I can ask then to bring something else." He offered.
Instead she stood glancing at the guards at the door, causing one to slip outside. "Three days. I expect to see my daughter back and ready for dinner to meet with Lady Niesta. Also we will discuss your charity event after your birthday. It would be best if you chose your own benefactor."
"Mother." Cassie's voice called out as when the other turned to leave. "Avoid it all you want but understand Jared and I are one. You can't expect him to hid for the rest of his life and remember who's son he is. He could have left the capital and this ring behind. As you're so fond of pointing out, 'You don't have the luxury of ignoring him.'" The High Lady turned back for one glance before heading for the door. "You know if you spent a little more time listening to both of us things would be a lot easier." There was no acknowledgment to his words and as the door closed he heaved a sigh of relief.
He hadn't even noticed Lorran who had stepped closer to the table standing right next to him. "Do you have any idea what happens when one of the royal guard doesn't know where their charge is?"
"If you got into trouble then it was caused directly by the royal family. There was no reason to deliberately ignore me but I will draw the line at being starved. NO ONE was willing to give me food nor were they even willing to tell me if I was going to get lunch or anything else. I simply stepped out to eat."
The paw that gripped his shoulder was tight enough to hurt not to mention the blunt claws that pressed the shirt fabric and fur until they were indenting his skin. "I don't care how you feel or what games you wish to play but if you don't want me putting guards at your bed I expect to be informed if you leave the palace."
Cassie wondered if she shouldn't rebuke the hare as Jared kept a firm control and asked her to stay back. "Do what you have to but I won't promise you anything either. We will do what we need to do when we need to do it until they understand!"
The paw let go and Lorran pulled out a chair sitting down. "There seems to be plenty, do you mind if we have some as well?" The words were friendly and polite making Jared stiffen as he waved a paw to proceed. The other three quickly sat down and started in. "Let's understand something. I don't care where you go or what you do. Our job isn't to stop you or help you. We are simply here to make sure you stay safe. Now security here seems decent so there is no reason for me to even bother unless you have guests or plan on leaving. Understand a good guard is seen but rarely noticed, which means we're there when you enter or leave and close enough the rest of the time to keep you safe. We don't even need to be in your rooms but we will be there to answer or open the door AND just so the Princess knows, we won't leave by her command nor do we report to her parents. The palace guard is run by three high captains, each is in charge of a different area." What came over the next hour was an explanation on how various guards were posted and who covered what area.
In reality Lorran and his few guards would only be needed if Jared left the palace, say to head to the court or gardens. Normally only one would accompany him unless he decided to go to the inner city were four or five would be brought along. Leaving to the city proper would require a full guard of ten which he would have to draw from some of Princess Cassandra's guards who were under the lead of Brent. Meanwhile if Princess Cassandra left the palace Brent would take five to the courts, ten to the inner city, and a full twenty into the city which would include Lorran and his smaller group. Both listened silently as the hare spoke who finished by telling them that it really didn't matter where they went or what they did his main and only job was to make sure Jared stayed safe.
After that he asked the ferret to try and complete his business inside the hotel otherwise he was going to request some additional guards. With Lorran listening Jared contacted Lord Callen, Bervante, and several others trying to lay out plans for the next few days which pretty much ruined the idea of getting anything done within the hotel. He spent the next two days moving around both the city and inner city, the first day started with a late breakfast with Lady Merina, lunch with Bervante, and a meeting with Lord Callen which ended with a large dinner with many guests. He was introduced to dozens of people knowing less than half and struggling with Cassie to remember them all. By the end of the second day he felt like he had accomplished nothing but eating and small talk which occasionally turned into something more.
Thankfully though when he arrived at the bank on the third day it was all business. Bervante, Lord Callen, and two of the events greater supporters meet with him and walked down stairs to the main vault floor. Master Lantis was someone Jared knew from his fathers notes, and Lord Gantis, who was a rather solemn badger with sharp eyes and a very closed mouth, but that didn't stop the other from looking very eager after they were introduced and Jared's vaults were called forward.
The surprise came when a dozen more palace guards showed up and Drentan, Lady Lindara, and Jared's uncle walked down the stairs. Everyone watched carefully as Max and Jared began setting out the collection on multiple tables so it could be looked over. Although his coins gained a great deal of attention it wasn't until the third vault opened and they began unwrapping several treasured artifacts that things got interesting.
Bervante was a true fountain of knowledge even while he drooled from both sides of his beak constantly giving small licks as he spoke. "Hand woven Arictis baskets with a real Hanstan shroud. The chiefs body was actually wrapped seven times not four or five, one for each of the Hanstan gods. Shaliah porcelain, two excellent pieces, a few more cracks in this one than I like but still excellent!"
By the time they were ready to break for lunch Jared had agreed to let dozens of his coins to be shown and had also agreed for ten pieces to be put up for auction along with the Trone. Also before they broke up they had a conservative estimate of thirty million for the entire collection, possibly as high as fifty if many of the rarer treasures were sold at auctions or the right places.
When everything had been packed away again and the vaults were sent back instead of heading to lunch with his uncle, Drake pulled him aside. "Lord Jared, I hope your business is concluded. Lady Lindara has headed back to the palace to set up a meeting for you."
"She said I had until this evening. At the very least I should spend some time with my uncle before Cassie goes back." He responded feeling irritated.
"Master Maximilian is welcome to come and I'll make sure lunch is provided and you will still have time to spend with him this afternoon, but the High Lady was rather insistent, she wants _you_Jared not Cassandra.
Cassie didn't make a single comment even when he questioned her leaving him to make up his own mind. "Alright."
"There will be a car waiting for the two of you. Hopefully you won't be much longer." Jared frowned as the first price turned and left. 'You're the one who wanted to be noticed.' She finally stated, he could feel her satisfaction with his decision. 'Yes but I don't want to have to drop everything just cause she calls.'
Jared had tried to turn and join his uncle only to find his body locked solid. 'YOU BETTER!' Not even giving him a chance to protest she piled it on. 'Everyone does! The royal family might have some leeway when they are called but you won't! But before you get all upset understand she send Drake to ask you not someone else, and you didn't even call him PRINCE! She is obviously trying to be polite whether to you or to me it doesn't really matter. For now you should be polite and do what your told just like everyone else would.'
He wanted to argue that idea and almost did, not because it was probably the best idea right now but because of how she said it, and the fact she had said it at all. Cassie felt his feelings and answered him anyways, 'We Jared means me and you, we can't both be a princess.'
It didn't take long to reach the palace since this time Jared was driven up the ramps instead of taking the stairs or lift. Only twice before had they gone up the steep slopes and tunnels both times with Nessandra and several others packed in a vehicle preventing them from seeing much. This time was different and both watched as the vehicle slowly climbed steep turns before dropping them off on the back side of the palace with his uncle and two guards.
He was lead to a small conference room where Lady Lindara, Princess Nessandra, and several others most of whom were seated at a table, several of them beginning to eat. "Thank you for coming. I'm sorry but we only have a minute or two left. You're welcome to serve yourself a plate but you will eat later. The Larkin government is... unpleased you announced the sale of a Trone." She pointed at a seat next to hers that stood in a open area several feet away from the table. In front of her Ryall was setting down a small table before putting out a thick white disk at its center making sure it was all correctly positioned.
"Move Boy!" Came his uncles quiet but gruff voice which came with a small push to his shoulder. He sat down watching as the mage finished his preparations. Jared was all for giving up the other Trone now figuring that something like this was going to happen but Cassie wasn't going to allow that.
'Your father saved lives and property. Think about how expensive some of your artifacts have gotten. No doubt what he saved has made someone a lot of money. DON'T let them take it unless they want to pay for it!' ~ 'Cassie...' ~ 'NO! If we share everything than part of that is mine too. In fact I should chose where the other half of the Trone's profits should go.' Jared was reluctant but as Ryall made the connection and the head councilor for the Larkin Government had exchanged pleasantries and was airing his grievance the pair had a planned defense.
"I'll say it again Queen Lindara, it is insulting hearing this young boy think he can give away a priceless treasure that he doesn't even have the right to claim." The council ruler was a hare who looked every bit insulted.
"I understand Master Craize and as you requested I was able to look over Lord Ferannce's vaults."
"AND!!"
"He does indeed have a Trone bar, two of them."
"Two?" The voice sounded nearly strangled. "He robbed us of three bars?"
That was enough to make Jared twist leaning sideways attempting to get into the view. This was not unnoticed by the High Lady. "Councilman perhaps this problem would be best cleaned up if you spoke with Jared himself. Council lead Craize I introduce Lord Jared of Stone Gates."
Jared stared hard as the image rotated towards him. Several seconds passed before he spoke using Cassie's wording. "I would say it is a pleasure to meet you Master Councilor but I believe you just insulted my father."
"A pleasure it would be if you father was an honest man." Craize replied swiftly.
With Cassie's help he was able to keep his thoughts ordered. "Tell me Councilor do you have access to records?" After an affirmative he continued. "How many lives did my father save, including the people who heard his first call and got out of the way or moved outside?"
"I don't think you understand. A few lives is no where near as important as those Trone."
"Really... Then maybe I read those news articles wrong which stated everyone was overjoyed with the salvation of both artifacts and lives, but if this is about the artifacts could you list for me which ones were saved, their current prices, and exactly how much revenues have been created by their use or sale?"
"Listen you man..." "LORD!" Cassie quickly barked out for him, "Lord Jared or young Lord. However I wouldn't have much of an issue if you simply called me Master Jared either." Jared added in. "However councilman I want to know how much money, in currant prices, your government made from my father's actions."
"This is not about money! It's about you having what doesn't belong to you. Your father took what he should have." Craize stated loudly.
Jared sat silent for several seconds. "I would appreciate it if you either spoke the truth, or at least didn't tell such obvious lies. My father did not take Anything! He was given a gift which was approved and endorsed by the Larkin council. He was the one who noticed the wall starting to part and called out a warning. Then when the first part collapsed he was the one who ran back under the shelf with a support limb and helped the injured out. If that wasn't enough to earn him a good deal of credit he went back again hearing there were still others inside trying to save the work of the past year. All of that was because he valued preservation, whether it was life or history didn't matter. He was given that box with great gratitude and thanks, not just for the accident but for a full years work. What part of that is taking and how dare you say he robbed you!!"
"Aurthur tricked everyone making simple request for the box and what was inside. He never told anyone what he found. It wasn't until years later that someone noticed the excessive weight."
"Stop right there." Jared called. "The only thing my father did was keep his mouth closed. I've held the box, the thing is heavy! They weighed and categorized the box and it contence. This mistake was made by everyone who weighed and measured the box plus everyone who held or inspected it. Anyone who picked the box up must have realized its far to heavy. How could you not, the bottom weighs less than the top."
The councilman stopped trying to change tactics. "Your father had no right to claim such precious artifacts, even he knew that. He was arrested and would have been charged if he hadn't found a way to trick more people by giving it away."
"I have no doubt he gave it away to make sure it stayed safe. After all if he had returned it the council would have just sold it. What did you need the money for again... Economic stabilization? In the form of training soldiers, hiring mages, and making better equipment?" Craize's ears stiffened getting fully erect while his face tightened in anger. "I told you before my father is a man bent on preservation and so am I in a way. He gave that Trone to the World Museum so your government would never be able to touch it."
"That won't stop us this time." The lapine threatened.
Jared's answer was a smile as Cassie took over keeping him from looking upset or flustered. "You know there is one way which you could get the bar. You could either buy it in the auction or pay three million pre auction. Yes I think that would be right, after all we just wouldn't pay you a quarter of the profits that was promised. The historical palace would get one third and the first Princess will decide where the rest goes."
Craize had sputtered several times trying to speak. Finally he got out, "You can't do that! We won't pay for what's already ours!"
"I think you should reconsider. After all I believe Princess Cassandra was looking for a way to use the profits to aid in humanitarian projects. Tell me is there any major help the Larkin people are in need of?" Cassie was still talking but now thinking of any problems she could remember within the other's government recalling something about the same time someone else at the table suddenly spoke out.
"The ALkayline Bridge." Jared's body reflected her smile. They had been given a rundown towards the beginning of the week on the incident that had happened nearly a year ago. A large storm had destroyed a portion of the cliff side weakening supports that caused the bridge to collapse sealing off a large plateau that was home to thousands The destruction of the bridge had caused even more damage to the cliff causing a large slide. Since then very little had been done except a long slow cleanup, but the incident had ruined the entire area. Those that could afford it used magical means to cross the chasm otherwise it took over two days to travel down and back up to the other side. The economy was devastated overnight because a majority of the population of the three small towns worked across the gap in the fields, shipping areas, and various processing plants. With no money incoming and the sudden loss of a workforce the area and fields were abandoned by many tuning what was left into slum. The pair had sat through a long lecture on humanitarian efforts. The main point that had been made was the project to build a new bridge would take hundreds of thousands or more and take years to finish or it could be done in months using hundreds of mages and cost millions. It had been more an example of potential economic waste verse possible gains. For Cassie though it was a perfect opportunity to help the people who would be upset if the government were to interfere with the auction.
"Understand giving possibly up to a million to such a project would ease the problems of the Larkin Government while benefiting a great many people." Cassie dropped back as she watched the head councilor ponder what was said while chewing his lip. Finally poked by her Jared continued. "Let's understand something. The box and all its contents were given to my father. THE REASONS of how or why don't matter." He raised his voice to stop the other. "Legally he has the paperwork and the wording to prove it. If you seek to make this a true legal matter you will LOSE. First my father donated a Trone to a museum to ensure its safety, that I can prove! Second I'm auctioning off the next bar and taking no profits, the entire sale is being divided up. One quarter is going to the historical palace, the other quarter is going to your government. The second half will go to where Princess Cassandra chooses and since she also believes since the Trone originated the the Cerastin empire that the people living there now should benefit as much as the government. The final Trone, Pyrones, and Ah-Trone are going to stay together as a set. There is a great deal they can teach the world about preserving history. Now if you think you have some argument strong enough to overturn the proof of ownership, the wish to preserve history without gaining profit, or the story of my father risking his life several times to help preserve life and history than I would appreciate hearing it now. Master Craize if this is not about money or the lives saved, or preservation of history than what exactly is this about... some imagined insult that you think you have the right to claim or some form of revenge?"
Jared finished staring at the hare who began rubbing his temples. "You're almost worse than your father. He did whatever he wanted and refused to let anyone know what was going on. You just... lay it all out and expect things to follow you wish."
"Only when We know which way things will end up. It would look horrible for the Larkin government to go after me when both its people and government will be given so much. You're going to end up with half the Trone's profit and I'm going to have one of the worlds greatest pieces of history. Yes it would look very bad indeed if history repeated itself and I was arrested for owning something legally that another government wanted for money. It wouldn't matter what story you gave digging up the past council's actions would be horrible for you." Jared summed up.
"I will still have to discuss things with the council. Several of them are pushing for action now."
"Master Craize." Queen Lindara finally spoke out. "My daughter is hosting a gala event to raise funds and hasn't yet chosen a charity. Perhaps a portion of those funds could be used to help with not just the bridge but other rebuilding efforts as well."
Craize bowed his head with nothing left to argue. "Of course High Lady. Such an offer is most generous. I will let you know how things go as soon as possible." Jared leaned back letting out a slow breath as the image faded. Cassie quickly made the obvious connection for him that now with the royal family's name officially involved the Larkin Government would do little or nothing about the matter.
He sat up sharply as the High Queen barked out his name. "Jared! In the future you will NOT involve my daughter in things without her approval."
"I didn't." He replied quietly.
Giving him a full stare with a slight frown she asked. "How much of that was my daughter?"
"High Lady, I was ready to give up the Trone. I knew offering one in the beginning was going to cause problems."
"Yet you still did so." She stated.
"Yes. I needed you and the rest to know I didn't need your money, status, nor help. I could sell very little and have a comfortable life. Putting the Trone up for auction shocked everyone and made them wonder who I was." He got a very approving nod from the queen. "As for how much was Cassie. She decided just now that half of everything I have is hers and she was not going to let me give away the Trone. She also decide the other half of the profits she should give out." Jared's face grew a small grin as his voice continued, "We work well together mother and I have no doubt even you noticed when I spoke." He left a small pause before taking back control. "You did notice we don't pause as much and it's not because I'm staying quiet like you think. It is because we don't argue or distract each other as much, it has gotten easier working together. We keep telling you when you talk to one you are talking with both of us."
The High Lady had a little frown giving one single head shake before she waved him to the table with her final words. "I don't expect either of you to make such serious decisions without at least warning me first. It was a great idea, one which will help in several ways but we could have gotten much more out of it." Nessandra pulled a chair out for him next to his uncle giving him a small hug before allowing him to sit down. Max had a slight puzzled look aimed at Jared who gave a little shrug in return.
The rest of the afternoon went by in a flash with the second princess guiding both him and his uncle through the palace. After the skunks second comment about how he was sure someone else could take the time to escort him she stopped long enough to set him straight in her mind. "It is my debt and duty to help the one who protected my sister." Whether he had been aware of it or not didn't make a bit of difference to Nessandra and when she glared at him the skunk felt it was best to let her have her way. After goodbyes were said and the twins prepared for dinner Jared dropped back and began to wonder if he really had made much progress over the last few days and how much further he was going to have to go before he might be accepted in some way.
"Cassandra I've already heard more than enough about this from your sister. You must be present the entire time. This is your birthday celebration and the ascension rights, that should have been done last year, will be done this time." They were in a small room where Cassandra was rehearsing the main ritual that she was going to have to go through.
"But during the dance we would have enough time, we would..."
"NO!" The voice came back firm and final. Cass glared at her mother trying to force one last concession. "We're supposed to share."
"Exactly! I know he only gets two days before the party but that will have to suffice. Now back to work or we will end up practicing during his time as well. The two of you know the first princess will be expected to attend ANY acceptable bachelor and that will be dozens plus more wishing for some of you attention. This needs to be Cassandra's day, the entire day."
The younger vixen turned back glaring at the servant that held the lamp looking like she wanted to yank it away and throw it across the room as she placed her hands on each side and began to recite the lines she had rehearsed. 'Try to relax Cass, Ness is right, we will have to wait until later.' ~ 'And what makes you think she is going to listen then?!'
"High Lady, perhaps it would be best if you let me work with her personally." Samuel was one of the people who would be helping to perform the ceremony. In fact he would be the one holding the Purelight which the lamp represented.
"They would do better if they stopped trying to plan out how to exchange and stop wasting time."
"Excuse me High Lady." Jared's voice spoke while at the same time he tried to calm Cassie's frustration. "We are not planning anything. I have already taken your second daughters advice and you already made me promise to allow Cassandra the time so I will not intrude. You though are refusing to understand..." "You mean she tricked you!" Cassie spat out interrupting him. 'We all have our problem with this.' Jared responded.
"This is what is required and what is best for our family and our country. Our traditions bind us tighter than many of us like but this is what is required and as the first princess you will proceed as expected." It was the same line and lecture they had heard dozens of times. 'She didn't even hear you.' Cassie thought quietly when she finished. Jared didn't argue.
"Jared?" Cassie asked aloud. He felt the full nudge from the inside helping to wake him up. "Are you ready?"
'Me? Cassie this is your day. By the way, Congratulations, may your year be blessed.' ~ 'Thank you Jared I...' She stopped sitting up in bed suddenly shocked with the true realization of what the day was.'Jared... Why??' He felt her confusion and even remorseful feelings as she finally realized it was their birthday. All this time she had accepted it was her birthday because Jared had always celebrated his on this day. 'Because this IS your birthday Cass, not mine. I've had plenty before and I do agree with mother in part. A princess must do certain things and we can always celebrate mine later.'
"I'm sorry." She spoke out. "I totally forgot until now. We have some time." She suddenly offered picturing them working together for some fun. 'Later, and stop feeling upset. When have you had time to remember anything beyond what they keep pushing on us.'
'Mother!!' She blasted out in anger, 'She Knows!' ~ 'Yes and Drake should too, after all the research he did on me. It will be very_interesting_ to see if either of them say anything.' She could feel a sudden smugness as he moved back. 'Jared what are you planning?' Cassie asked curious.
She had gotten out of bed and into the bathroom pestered him several times before he answered. 'Nothing. I made a promise Cass. This is your birthday but it also means I turn eighteen. No matter what your mother thinks I become a legal adult today.' The vixen bathed, dried up, and dressed before she finally gave in and asked again. "Jared, are you planning something?"
She knew he'd be smirking if in control and was amused that she had asked again. 'Nothing yet. Really I'm wondering what is going to happen. I don't expect anything today, but if they won't even acknowledge my birthday tomorrow... Well in the afternoon maybe I'll get a adult certificate and go buy a car for kicks, it is my birthday after all.' ~ 'You know mother would never...' Cassie ended up grinning through most of breakfast but only part of that was because of all the well wishes from her family.
The morning progressed and as noon drew near so did her ascension ceremony. All the pomp and fanfare was for real this time along with the long grueling speeches and thousands of guests she had been seen by so far. Now though it was the full family, officials, and several who stood before her father's seat in the Seriene Hall as she strode down an isle way between them. Thankfully this was the final part as she nodded to her father finishing her journey quickly and announcing herself to the High Lord. She turned to the assembled and looked for Samuel who was already at her side ready of offer the Purelight grateful that she nodded immediately and held out her hands.
The Purelight was once nothing more than a torture spell made to harm and bind enemies, forcing them to tell the truth or face agony. Now it was considered one of Mystalane's sacred honors, held by the royal family. What had originally been a plot to ruin the Reylexion line had turned into something far beyond what had been planned. To rule the kingdom by the power of truth would seem like a crazy idea but each year the High Lord retook his oath.
~ To rule the kingdom for the kingdom.
~To hold to the will of the Purelight.
~To honor the Purelight and it's power.
Now to actually say they ruled by truth is not the full truth. Better to say that the Purelight bound the soul forcing anyone the held it to speak the truth, but it also forced anyone that held it to honor ANY oath sworn upon it. Each member of the family at the age of sixteen held the white flame and spoke their families oath, a process that was considered uncomfortable at best. Those who held secret desires to rule found it hard, even painful to hold the Purelight which made it easier for the family to protect itself. While to the outside world made the royal family seem like fools or heroes the fact was it ended up solidifying a nation. It's quite difficult for a new country, government, or empire to rise to power but with the change of the Reylexion family motto other counties found something different. Those powers that challenged the fledging nation found oaths that were held and promises that were fulfilled. Even major disputes that happened were stopped when the High Lord stepped forward with the Purelight and spoke the truth. Now even three centuries later the Mystalane Empire was as strong and honored as those founded centuries earlier, and often times trusted more. " Arosde al ven Branda " Under the Purelight had been used as a trick to try and trap the High Lord, but had instead turned into something more powerful than any could have imagined.
Cassandra could already feel the creeping energies as the Purelight settled in her paws invisibly gripping onto her body and soul. She counted silently to sixty as told but half way there Jared suddenly had another plan. He deliberately wove the spell around the outside of their body and soul but prevented it from reaching into their core. Cassie nearly hissed in frustration as she felt the bonds continue to weave around them making a sort of thick shell. The both watched as the flame grew nearly doubling in size as the spell strained to accomplish its task. Amidst the beginning murmurs and gasps she began to lash out at him only to find a stronger blast back. 'WAIT!' A few seconds later the flame calmed down returning to its flickering white paw-full that it was in the beginning. 'We are Bound! Just not as tightly as they think, now begin!'
With little other choice she complied. "I stand before the family and proclaim myself. I AM Cassandra Mintof Reylexion, first born daughter of Lord Marverath and Lady Lindara residing with in the body of Jared Ferannce." She wasn't supposed to add that last part but even among the hard stares she could see and feel the fact the Purelight answered her with warmth letting her know she had been right to do so. "I swear by the Purelight to serve my people and my family in all that is required." Again the same warming answer this time with a pressure that seemed to squeeze them. 'See.' Jared offered quietly. "I swear by the Purelight to honor my oaths as my life and to never make an oath without intending to keep it." Again the answering warmth and pressure.
The barest head shake kept Samuel back when he moved forward. "Having made these oaths I now must uphold my duties. As the first Princess I relinquish all rights for myself and my descendants to rule." There were no gasps, no mutters, just shock as she continued. "To much has happened, and as a princess I _must_accept the fact that this is not my true body, therefore any child I have would not be acceptable to rule our house." She knew there were going to be problems but this was the one way she could make sure her parents wouldn't side step the matter or be able to fully ignore Jared. 'And it will prove you're bound by the Purelight.' He added. 'Don't you even Dare!' She threw back at him, 'What do you think they are going to say?'
Samuel had waked back and held his paws out waiting interrupting the pair. Causing Jared, using Cassie's voice, to speak. "Will you please just give me a few seconds." Closing their eyes he missed the shock and bewilderment of many, no one wanted to hold the Purelight, it was... unknown. In those few seconds Jared tried to make Cassie feel what he knew. They were still bound by the Purelight. They would still feel its effects and know when it was active. They just wouldn't be bound as tightly as her family. 'And what about how the flame grew. Explain That!' ~ 'Simple we are two souls. We simply imply it took more power for the spell to work. Cassie I sear on the Purelight. If I'm wrong, or this didn't work we can do it again and I won't interfere!' The could both feel the pressure as it settled around them and a sudden surge of warmth greater than they had felt so far pass through them.
Feeling vindicated Jared opened their eyes and tried to pass the flame to a still surprised Samuel. "Princess, are you alright?"
Again Jared answered. "Yes, thank you. That felt, right." It was clumsy and a little confusing and Cassie pulled back control giving a slight smile and waving him back when the flame left her paws. The entire proceeding she had her back towards her father and now she was finally allowed to turn around seeming him seated with her mother at his side and the first prince standing a few feet away.
Daughter that was a little unusual but I understand your case is most difficult. I sense a great deal of acceptance and understanding in your oath and though I am unhappy with it you are correct in thinking about our family and our country. From this day forward neither you nor your descendants will be permitted to make decisions concerning the direct ruling of Mystalane. However that does not exempt any of them from doing their duty to serve this land and family."
"Of course High Lord. It is as you decree." She answered.
"Then daughter I decree you a woman of seventeen who needs to go enjoy her party." With this she turned back walking down the hall passing looks that ranged from strange to awe as she went.
It wasn't until the party got going that she was questioned on how she was able to hold the Purelight so easily did they realize something might have been off. It turned out in their favor though, seeing the first princess with her eyes closed seeming to enjoy what others considered difficult had made a huge impression.
The party was in the main hall with all it's doors open allowing many out into a courtyard area and it started with a large meal that all enjoyed. As many finished and began moving about most tables were removed or moved to the outsides, there was still food and drink but the mood had changed leaving large groups talking or watching entertainers that performed. As the first chords of music were struck both Princess Cassandra and Nessandra quickly found themselves surrounded by potential partners as the first dance started. And dance they both did, with short breaks that were packed with compliments and flattering conversation. For his part Jared did stay silent and held back, only watching what was going on, and feeling good with how excited Cassie was and how much she enjoyed the attention.
Both were a little surprised when her mother pulled her aside demanding answers. "Did you put him up to this!?"
"What?"
"Alexander just insulted Lord Nerant and left. He came here in a DRESS and he refuses to dance with anyone if he's not allowed to dance with Jared!" The words were mostly quiet but held barely contained fury. For his part Jared was quite surprised. The pair had spent what they could of their free time speaking with her younger sibling but the past few days he had been horribly depressed and wearing pants.
"She has that right mother and we didn't have anything to do with this." Cassie's anger had flared at the thought that her mother believed that this might have been planned out.
"He!" The High Lady had bared her teeth with her daughters first words. "I expect you to accept any invitation and don't you dare think about sneaking out." This time it was Cassie that had her teeth bared as Jared tried to calm her down.
"How dare you!" He had to keep a tight grip on her making sure the growl she had didn't raise her voice. "He swore to you so you could lock him away on his birthday! And now you act like he would break that promise after telling you several times he wouldn't." If it weren't for Jared things would have been much worse but he squeezed her tight from the inside slowly backing off again as she gained control. "Mother, if you ruin my birthday I might not ever forgive you." With that she stormed off barely gaining a half a dozen steps before she was suddenly spun around and hugged by her twin.
"Let it go." She whispered in Cassie's ear before releasing her. With Jared once again giving waves of comfort she let out a long breath and smiled back to Nessandra. Everything seemed fine for the next few hours and much to Casandra's relief it seemed the masses of people were thinning out as the hours grew late.
"I still don't see why a HALF soul should be given such attention." It was said snidely and deliberately loud enough to grab her attention as she got ready for another dance. Quietly excusing herself from her next partner she turned to find Lisanna, her cousin, staring directly at her. As she slowly walked over all but two of the previous group vanished. Cassandra didn't even bother with the other two distant relations focusing solely on the other vixen,
"Dear cousin. I though such ignorance was avoided in our family. Please tell me the rumors that you might be inbred aren't true." Cold fury met her words as Lisanna raised one paw. Pretending to not even notice she continued. "One plus one is two. One minus one is zero. I shall have to speak with mother and find someone who can explain basic math to you. I have no idea who you came up with a half... Cousin is something wrong?" Cassie had added fake concern seeing the other's paw begin to glow.
"WRONG?!! This whole insane charade which insults our family with every second it continues." She hissed.
"Sister. May I ask for you next turn?" Both vixens turned to see Alexander standing there in a full blue court dress holding out one paw.
"Great now the freaks parade together." Cassie moved far faster than Jared had expected stepping in and knocking Lisanna's paw away while she used a backhanded fist making the others head snap back.
It was ice and venom that blended making the first princess's voice seem frozen. "Lisanna I won't even bother with the High Lord. If you say anything like that again I'll make sure you won't be able to use that mouth." The other vixen's two supporters stepped back bowing low before swiftly leaving her alone as she directed her rage at the first princess. It might have been a surprise to all as Cassandra turned away this time moved by Jared nearly fighting against his other half.
"Yes brother of course you can have the next..." He spun as the paw connected with his side trapping the arm with his elbow and kicked out the princess's leg sweeping Lisanna's leg out from under her just like he had been taught so long ago. Jared had only been to a set of ten self defense classes after he had gotten out of Listening Hill but they seemed to be enough to send the vixen to the floor. He relinquished the body back to Cassie's fury with only the simple reminder that even the others magical strike couldn't have really hurt them and that she was at her party.
The second part of the warning did seem to have some effect, instead of throwing herself on her cousin she stepped forward onto Lisanna's wrist leaning forward and shifting her weight when she tried to pull it back. Her mind was a whirl of anger picturing multiple different ways to subjugate the other vixen.
"Cass that is enough!" She didn't need to even look back to feel her twin as she placed a hand on her shoulder trying to send her own calming thoughts at her. "Jared, it's after midnight. Why don't you take a dance with Alex, he's been waiting all night." She gave a small nudge to her twin trying to get her to step back.
The pair did struggle some as Jared stepped away but Cassie kept them aimed at Lisanna. 'I am going to tear her apart!' Her anger was only fueled more by the fact it seemed her twin was concerned telling the other vixen not to get up yet that she would have someone to come check on her. It was Alexander's pleading look and guiding arm that got them slowly moving towards the music. 'What is wrong with you? You let her get away with insulting Alex AND attack ME!' Cassie suddenly blasted at Jared planting both feet firmly as she rounded on him. It was a slip, whether intentional or not Jared own anger raged forth before he quickly stuffed it back down. 'When you're to angry to think you step back!!' The were words echoed from their past spoken in uncle Max's voice.
"Ness will take care of it." Alex stated quietly giving another guiding tug on their am. Instead of following Cassie turned all the way around concentrating on her sister as she helped the other vixen into a chair. It was a sort of query Jared felt sent across the distance answered by irritation and anger none of which was directed at them. Princess Nessandra turned making a slight shooing motion that came with both an apology and support before Alex again started them forward again.
They were half way through a dance when the young tod voiced his irritation. "You know I wanted to dance with Jared."
"Sorry but mother made him promise." She answered.
"So I was told but if Ness is right we could go change." They completed several steps before she was close enough to answer. "I don't think that is going to work, especially after what's gone on tonight."
"Then let him lead the next dance."
"Me?!" Jared sputtered. "I'm not sure, I mean I doubt I'd be any good, I haven't really practiced."
"Good because I haven't been allowed to practice much in the female role." The pair couldn't really find a reason to argue especially since they had been trying their best to help Alex try to explore both sides of his body.
As the dance ended Alex stepped back giving the formal bow before taking a half step closer and with a sort of modified bow held out one hand. Shaking their head just slightly Jared gave a bow of his own and accepted the hand. The young tod had obviously not been telling the truth as he expertly stepped, spun, and followed while Jared and Cassie tried to lead them through the moves. It wasn't all that bad and they didn't end up interrupting any of the other partners but those who watched knew that something was off and it only took a few seconds to figure out why.
When it was over they realized Alex was again guiding them, this time towards the exit. "We are not changing." Cass stated to her brother.
"I know. I think I had better head out before she catches up." With that he ducked out the main doors. After a few seconds they realized why as the High Lady approached.
Cassie quickly stepped in behind and out of the great hall but it was apparent Alex must have bolted at top speed cause he wasn't in the hallway. "You two are making outright fools of yourself and this family, not to mention the fact you actually attacked Lisanna."
"She started first and after insulting Alexander..."
"ENOUGH! What kind of princess uses physical violence, especially against one of her own family." Lady Lindara spoke using both voice and body to maneuver them to the wall out of earshot from the main door.
"She isn't injured." Both heads turned to the other speaker who joined them.
"Nessandra, go back inside. You did what you were supposed to and this doesn't concern you." Jared had asked Cassie to step aside and hold her anger back so he could speak.
"High Lady you are neither a fool or stupid and until you know exactly what happened you should hold back any judgment." They could both see her lip curl looking like she wanted to deny or maybe she wanted to silence Jared's voice.
"Continue!" Came the curt order.
"Lisanna attacked Cassie with magic. She struck first and I defended us. It was only because we were in a public place that I didn't go further, but I'll have you know your daughter was ready to tear her apart for both the insults and the attack."
There was a rather significant pause before Nessandra spoke. "I was going to have Rakel look at her and let her leave. Now I think she can sit there for another hour and wait." The pair both felt the feeling of comfort sent their way before she stepped away and moved back into the hall.
Jared fell back feeling rather tired from the events and Cassie took over. "I think it's time I went to my room mother. It's been a long day and I am tired now."
"Very well. We can discuss this later but both you and Alexander are going to learn what is appropriate. It's time this nonsense with your brother stopped."
Although Cassie had started to growl it was Jared who surged back up taking some control and speaking out. "Listen to US mother, High Lady, whatever. Neither of us is going to allow you or the High Lord to destroy Alex. We will stand against both of you if we need to especially if you won't care or listen to who he is."
It was restrained but barely as Lady Lindara answered. "You swore your oaths today to serve you country and your family..."
"EXACTLY! Allowing this family to destroy, degrade, and crush parts that don't fit is wrong. Wrong for this country and family. We also swore an oath to Alexander which we will keep! Yes High Lady we will talk about his soon and you will listen even if it means we have to tie the two of you down until you can listen to sense." ~ "Good Night Mother!" Cassie added as they turned away. Although Jared wished they could turn back and gage the queen expression neither of them was willing to look back even if their names were called.
The two were so deep in thought together as they walked back towards Cassie's room that they completely missed the bodies moving towards them from around the next corner. In fact it wasn't until they felt the weaves of energy pressing against their body did they realize something was wrong. Jared's ability was already guiding the magic away breaking apart a weave as they scanned the four male canines. All of them had black hood on concealing their heads except the muzzle which poked out and the eyes that stared at them. They had on dark plain clothing and the pair stepped back as two rushed forward.
Jared was already shifting bodies as Cassie's paws glowed. She was able to avoid one trying to take her arm but the other had taken a hold of her forearm and yanked. She turned with the pull driving her free hand into the others chest releasing a burst of chaotic energies while Jared followed up with a kick straight between the males legs.
There were few things stressed more in those few self defense classes beyond trying to stay calm and strike anywhere without care for honor or politeness. "It's him!" The second one hissed stepping away.
"Do IT!" Another ordered from down the hall. They could both feel the weaves of magic that were gathered and racing towards them. This time Jared worked and struggle to try and control the weave. It wasn't that he couldn't break it apart or allow his ability to change it but he wanted to send the net like weave back the way it came. They were forced to ignore the canine who slowly creeping forward as Cassie tried to help pulling on the edges. Together they gained control flinging the spell back towards the source pushing it faster by Cassie's contributions. The pair locked eyes with the mage watching for several seconds before the other suddenly collapsed.
Jared gasped then screamed out as first a sharp punch of unease and then pain that turned into a line of flame as he looked down. The male smiled as he yanked the long knife out of Jared's leg pulling back read which bloomed into the dress. 'CHANGE!' He cried as he tried to hobble back, only to stumble until he slapped up against the wall feeling warm liquid soaking into his fur as it began to run down both sides of his leg. He tried to push the transfer as his body quaked from the shock forcing a quicker change. Several seconds later Princess Cassandra was able to push off the wall and take a firmer stance with both paws glowing.
"Back off, they want her alive." With that order the two who were left standing fled, running down the hall and around the corner as Cassie tried to decide what to do.
'Jared?' ~ 'I'm okay but I think we need a healer. It's really bad.' She was already yanking up handfuls of dress to see finding nothing wrong but the blood that had been smeared back onto her leg from the dress. 'How?' She questioned knowing and feeling the knife that had driven through one side of his thigh and out the other side. Jared took several seconds to gather his thoughts and explain by showing some of his memories of how he had come to realize the spell not only gave them a body to share but a shell that was affected differently and wasn't transferred to the other. 'I know it seems weird that the first thing I do is take a shower but often times I don't get to clean up before you take over.'
She was still considering the facts when they heard voices and calls that drew closer, including a cry of "Princess Cassandra." "Here!" She answered hearing paw falls and seeing the bodies that came closer as they charged down from the far end of the hall.
"Princess... She's injured." With a wave two guards raced to the far end of the hall while the other two took guard positions over the downed canines. "Lady Cassandra we must get you to your room. Can you walk?" The lynx leader had already wrapped an arm around her waist and stepped forward, pulling on her but ready to accept her weight even though she started to struggle.
"Enough, I'm not hurt Jared is."
"Then Princess we must move." Still Cassie struggled and once she was able to gain enough space she twisted shoving hard into the other's side forcing him towards the wall.
"STOP! Send one of the guards for.. NO!!" She shouted again at the guard who tried to interrupt her with 'Princess' "If he dies so do I. Get a healer to my room NOW!" Seeing little choice he sent one of the guards off. "Now Princess please.." "YES!" She barked back striding down the hall and waving off his help. By the time she reached her room she had forced several more guards to go looking for a healer as they ran up to the group that was forming.
As she laid down on her bed to wait she started to really worry about Jared who was feeling even weaker. 'Just relax.' He pleaded with her. 'It feels like before, you're feelings are to strong.' She tried to comply relaxing into the bed and mentally holding him close. She did her best to ignore the commotion of the room including her mother's concerns and demands until the healers said they were ready.
When her dress was cut away she sat up to explain to those gathered. "I'm fine." She started having already said it dozens of times. "Jared was stabbed in the thigh right here, and it went all the way through." She pointed out while speaking. "I'm worried. He's already so weak, when we change I need you to be ready."
"Alright Princess just wait for us to get positioned then I'll ask you to exchange." She laid back again while three women moved around her two crawling up onto the bed with her. One placed a hand on her shoulder telling her to relax as a light weave of energies gently touched her upper body. When Cassie was finally told to change it felt like she was trying to drag Jared from underneath the bed and he was unconscious before the change finished. Blood was already seeping out as they changed and in seconds the bed was changing color. As much as Cassie wanted to find out what was happening in less than a minute her own strength vanished and she too blacked out.
"I'm sorry High Lady but that is how it should be." Rachel the palace's head healer spoke. "They would have died if they hadn't acted the way they did. He needs time to recover at the very least five days."
Lady Lindara was still frowning, upset with the news they put out. "Is it always dangerous when they change?"
"Mistress." A quiet hare spoke from behind Rachel. With a nod the smaller lapine spoke. "High Lady, they do not use magic to change but it still takes some energy. Both Leah and I agree it's part body and part spirit. The best way to explain it is, it's like suddenly sprinting back and forth across the main courtyard. A normal person could easily do it, maybe be a little winded but no real problem. I imagine when the pair is healthy could change anytime, maybe quite a number of times and be fine. However if they do it when they are sick or injured it will likely cause some problems. The fact that Jared was seriously wounded... You can imagine trying to changing twice, trying to run across the courtyard when you can barely stand. Leah and I both noticed the Princess's energy drop sharper than Jared's during the change. For the health of both of them we must insist that he stays in bed for a few days and that they shouldn't change, for a week if possible."
"Very well. So are there any other problems or anything else you can tell me?"
Rachel took over again. "Honestly, we should have inspected the pair when they first arrived here and tried to understand more of what happens to their body and soul. I would feel better if we could inspect each of them when they are healthy and watch as they change or partly change as I have heard they do."
"Yes the council as well has made repeated requests."
"High Lady, you know I won't do anything but examine them and I only suggest this so we will be better able to help them in the future. There might also the the issue of merge and separation that I mentioned earlier, but if the mage council wishes something..." The lady trailed off.
"I know Rachel and your feelings. I offer my full thanks to both you and your helpers."
"It is an honor to be of service to you and your family." The other quickly replied.
Lady Lindara checked on the pair one more time before leaving to catch her husband. She had no real idea what happened and more importantly why or how. There were infiltrators in the palace and life just became far more complicated for everyone. The worst part was, in her mind, that these maybe the same people who kidnapped her before, trying to again take her daughter and use her against the family.
