Wind Stone
Two half-brothers meet for the first time ever, 16 years after the second was born. It seems at first that the only thing they have in common is their father, but soon they find out they have much more in common than they previously thought...
Joel found Marn sitting on a cliff overlooking the sea. Marn's position made him a little nervous, but this was a normal feeling for Joel by now. "There you are!" exclaimed Joel. "I've been looking all over for you. Why didn't you come eat lunch with me and Dad?"
Marn snorted and flicked his pointed ears, not responding physically otherwise.
"Is...it because of something I did?" Joel frowned as he spoke. Anxiety already began to build up in his system. "Did I say something that offended you? 'Cause, I'm sorry if I did, I'm only trying to--"
Marn cut his half-brother off. "That's not it, it's not your fault," he grunted.
Joel sighed with relief, though the anxiety didn't leave his body. "Well, that's good... But, why? Why didn't you come eat with us? We missed you, I missed you..." Joel frowned again, flattening his ears against his head.
"None of your business."
"But, I'm your brother, doesn't that make i--"
Marn growled and shot upwards, turning towards the coyote-fox mix. "You aren't my brother," he snarled, interrupting Joel again, "and that bastard back in the cabin is not my father. He's your father. I don't care what you or him think. I know the truth."
"B-but, Marn, that's not--"
"Don't you tell me what's true or not, you pansy." The pure coyote paused. "Look at you, you can't even look me in the eyes without flinching." And it was true, but it hurt Joel to admit it to himself. The 16-year-old looked away, too ashamed to look his rather handsome half-brother in the eye to even attempt to prove him wrong. "You were coddled your entire life, I bet. I didn't even have a father growing up, but look at you. You don't have a spine. Even if I were your brother, I would still hate you, you spineless worm."
Joel's eyes began to water. He reached into his jeans pocket and pulled out an odd, oval-shaped green stone. "I...I wanted to show you this," he stuttered. "It's a rare k-kind of stone that's o-only found around here. They c-call it a 'wind stone', be-because its color ch-changes depending on how the wind feels..." His voice trailed off. He sniffled, trying his best to choke back the tears.
Marn blinked and stared sarcastically at his brother. "How the wind...the wind can't feel, you twat! That's garbage," he snorted. "How much of an idiot are you?"
"I-I'm not an idiot, it's true!" Joel retorted, his voice still wavering. "L-look at it...see how it glows a little?" He reluctantly turned his head back to his half-brother and held out the stone in his paw, though his head hung down and he stared at Marn's body to avoid eye contact. The coyote didn't wear a shirt, even though the wind was a little chilly. Marn's brown-furred body was somewhat toned, though, unlike Joel's. For some reason, staring the coyote's chest began to make him feel better. He found his heart beating faster than usual; he was enjoying his half-brother's body a little more than he should be.
Marn raised an eyebrow as he stared down at the stone. Humoring the coyote-fox, he snatched the stone out of his paw and held it up close to his eyes. As his vision became fixated on it, he did indeed notice a slight radiance from the stone. "Huh...you're right," he mumbled. For some reason, the longer he stared at, the more the stone seemed to take on a bluish hue. He furrowed his brow and blinked, rubbing his eyes with his free paw to make sure his eyes weren't playing tricks on him. Sure enough, the rock had turned almost completely blue. "What the hell?" he blurted out. "This rock changed color!"
Joel snapped out of his trance of sorts, his eyes dried up now as he whipped his head upwards. His eyes connected to his 17-year-old half-brother's hazel eyes, though Marn's did not return the notion. Joel instead looked down at the stone to confirm Marn's claim. "Oh, that means that the wind is sad now," Joel said with a depressed sigh. "See, the wind stone can have six different colors, and each one represents a different emotion. Red, yellow and blue are the primary emotions--red is angry, yellow is excited, and blue is depressed. Orange, green and purple are combinations of the three primary colors--orange is anxious, green is calm, and purple is upset." The wind slowly breezed past them and out towards the sea. It was cold against Joel's face. Even Marn twitched a little, almost regretting leaving his shirt back in his room in the cabin.
"Oh, come off it already!" Marn snapped, over-pronouncing every syllable. "The wind is the wind, it can't have emotions! This is probably just some stupid mood rock that doesn't work." He tossed the wind stone back at Joel. Joel scrambled to catch it. "I'm out of here," he snorted.
"W-wait!" Joel whined. "Don't go, please come back with me to the cabin!"
"And why the hell would I do that?"
"Because, I..." His voice trailed off.
"You annoy me, Joel. If I went back to the cabin with you, then you'd just annoy me in an enclosed space." Marn turned to walk away and towards the woods a football field length away.
"N-no, please!" Joel suddenly reached his free paw out and grabbed Marn's wrist. Marn stopped, not expecting his half-brother to actually take a stand for himself. Marn turned his head back to look at the coyote-fox. "Please..." Joel whimpered. "I really want to get to know you better. I can't stand it when the wind is sad. Can we just go back? I promise I won't annoy you too much if you come back with me."
Marn stared at Joel, noting how his half-brother's ears were flattened against his head and his tail was curled around his right leg. Joel's green eyes looked hurt but still strong, and his expression was one of the saddest yet surest he'd ever seen. He genuinely wanted the coyote to return with him. And for some reason, he actually wanted to. Why was this? "...Fine," Marn muttered after a long pause. "I'll go with you. You'd better not make me resent this."
Joel's eyes lit up as a grin quickly overtook his face. "Yay!" he shouted with glee, his voice so loud, it echoed off the forest. He threw his arms around Marn and pulled him close into a tight hug, giggling all the while. All anxiety poured out his his system.
Marn sputtered and groaned, trying to weasel his way out of his brother's sudden embrace. "H-hey hey hey!! Don't make me change my mind!" His tail whacked itself against Joel's rear, making the coyote-fox let out a "meep". He was quickly released.
Joel still grinned up at Marn. "I-I'm sorry, hehee, that just made me so happy." Joel put the wind stone in his pocket and tightly grasped Marn's left paw with his right, tugging him towards their cabin as he jubilantly strode ahead. Marn stumbled as he began to follow, quickly catching up with the coyote-fox, mumbling something under his breath as he did.
Joel and Marn's father's cabin was a tiny speck off in the distance. They began their return trip in silence, Joel keeping a warm smile on his face while Marn awkwardly looked around at his surroundings. The sky was mostly clear, only a few large, puffy cumulus clouds hanging around. The ambient sounds of sea waves crashing against the cliffs and the slow, cold whirring of the wind against them provided a serene backdrop for their journey. Joel stared straight ahead, though eventually Marn's eyes turned towards his brother. No, his half-brother, he reminded himself. He was only going back with him because he was feeling kind. But why was he feeling kind? Joel annoyed the pure coyote to no end. Something about his face just forced him into submission. It was something about Joel's eyes, that bright green color. Marn noticed them when Joel pleaded with him to go back to the cabin with him. They were just too beautiful to resist. As he continued to stare, he noticed how cute his brother's smile was. Er, half-brother. That little smirk he had struck Marn as just being too adorable for words. Joel's ears gently flicked as the wind breezed past them. His fur coat was mostly a dark orange. He knew from prior experience that he had a half-oval-shaped patch of white fur on his torso, covering his stomach and rounding up around his chest, though presently it was obscured by a gray hooded sweatshirt. His large, fluffy tail also ended in a white tip. It was as if Joel was a completely new person, and Marn just couldn't stop staring at him. He was too appealing to the eyes to look away.
Joel began to hum a little tuneless tune as the two of them strolled along the coast paw-in-paw. His large, orange tail, inherited from his mother, happily flicked around. He was trying to avoid looking at Marn, with whom he shared the same father, in any way that made him look attractive. But the thoughts lingered in his mind. Marn was so cute when he looked all pouty... Wait, what am I thinking? he pondered to himself. He's been a jerk to me this whole time! And he never once said anything nice to me. He looked down for a moment, his eyes glancing at his half-brother's toned tummy again. But...what if he's being a jerk to hide his feelings? Joel felt his heart speed up again at the thought. He thought about making a very subtle pass at him to see how he'd respond. Joel had never been the flirtatious type in the past, but something about this coyote, his half-brother--no, his brother--just had him hooked.
Joel swallowed the lump in his throat and decided to take action; he flicked his tail over towards Marn and tapped him on his cute little rear. He saw Marn jump out of the corner of his eye and flick his head away. No negative response yet. Joel continued to casually flick his tail around, careful not to touch Marn again too soon.
Marn found himself blushing a little. What the hell is wrong with me? he thought with frustration to himself. Soon he felt his brother's thick, furry tail gently thwap against his rear again. He didn't jump this time. In fact, he found he kind of liked the attention. He couldn't look at Joel anymore, lest his flushed face be seen. Suddenly, he felt his brother's warm tail rest against his rear. It curled itself around him. Clearly, Joel was trying to send a message to Marn. But Marn wasn't ready to receive it.
"Alright, quit it! Stop that!" Marn barked, batting Joel's tail away and pulling his paw away from his grip. "Leave me alone already. Just be happy I'm going with you at all." Marn felt his stomach become ill as he yelled at his brother. Half-brother. Why did I do that? Marn looked away from Joel, intent on looking peeved.
Joel backed off and slid his tail between his legs. "O-okay, sorry, Marn, I'm sorry..." he whimpered. His eyes began to water again and anxiety coursed through his veins again. He flattened his ears against his head glanced away, sliding his paws into his pockets. He fingered at the wind stone in his pocket; he couldn't see what color at was, but somehow he still knew it was blue.
--
Joel and Marn walked in awkward silence the rest of the way back to the cabin. Neither of them could get their minds off of the other, though neither of them showed it. The cabin itself was fairly typical-looking, at least for a cabin. Brown logs forming the outside, a front and side entrance, windows, a garage on the side and a roof and chimney to boot. It was the only cabin for miles around, as well. The land around here had largely remained untouched by developers, since the land was so hilly that leveling it for any purpose would've cost too much to warrant it. The half-brothers' father had built the cabin with his own brother and father years ago. Since his father's passing, he and his brother took turns taking care of the cabin. The boys' father used this opportunity to meet up with his first son, Marn, and have both his sons get to know each other. Only a few days ago had Joel and Marn met for the first time.
Joel approached the side door and opened it up, holding it open for Marn to pass through. "We're back," he remarked lamely. Marn rolled his eyes and entered, not bothering to thank him. Joel stared at Marn's back for a moment before proceeding inside and closing the door behind him. They both kicked off their shoes, Joel flicking on the lights and heaving a sigh. Marn stretched, flicking his shorter tail around before heading towards the staircase. Joel called out after him, "Wait, where are you going?"
"I'm going upstairs, sheesh," Marn snapped. The pretense of his action was to try and figure out his own emotions, though, not to get away from Joel.
"Oh, I'll come too!" Joel dashed after his brother, waiting for him to start up the stairs.
"Whatever." The coyote stomped up the stairs, his tail gently swaying. Joel followed behind, still eyeing his older half-brother, though this time he was more focused on his rear. Marn really did have a cute little tush, and his little tail was simply adorable. Joel found himself blushing as the two of them reached the second floor and rounded the corner, making a left turn into their room for the duration of their visit. Marn groaned and dived onto his bed, laying belly-down and burying his face in his pillows. Joel sat himself down on the edge of his respective bed and sighed, staring back at Marn. The two sat in silence for a few awkward minutes.
Joel finally broke the silence. "So, what do you want to talk about?"
"Nngh," Marn grunted through his pillow.
Joel managed a smile and a bad joke. "'Nngh'? Can't say I know much about that." He chuckled a little at his own joke.
"Nnnnghh."
Joel cocked his head to the side. "Come on, don't you have anything you wanna talk about?"
"Mm hll."
Joel blinked. "...What?"
Marn grunted and lifted up his head. "I'm cold." He dropped his face back into his pillow.
Joel snickered and nodded. "Oh, I see..." He paused for a moment, biting his lip. "Can I...help? In any way?" His ears perked up and he smiled warmly, hoping for a miracle.
Marn turned his head to stare at the coyote-fox with a sarcastic look. "Get me my shirt." He buried his face back in his pillow.
Joel's ears flattened and his smile faded. "Y-yeah, okay, sure..." He got up and dragged himself over to the corner where his half-brothers shirt lay motionless. He picked up and stared at it for a moment. It was navy blue with the logo of some generic clothing brand on it. He approached Marn's bed and stared down at him, his bare, furred back. The coyote was completely unaware. The room was fairly dark, the only light in it coming from the main room. What Marn said to him earlier kept replaying in his mind. A pansy...is that really what I am? Joel dropped his brother's shirt onto the floor, his legs shaking a little. No, I'm not. Not anymore! Joel tentatively sat himself down on the edge of Marn's bed. Marn didn't stir. Joel's paws were quivering as he reached them towards the unaware coyote. He gulped and decided to take the plunge.
Marn jumped a little as he felt a pair of warm paws stroke his shoulders, but he didn't move his head. His initial instinct was to lash out and verbally attack his half-brother, but he managed to restrain himself. He made sure to keep his face buried in his pillow so his expression could not be seenâ€"a bashful smile. The paws began to stroke his shoulders, gently massaging him, squeezing different parts of his fur. He murred softly, wagging his tail a little, rolling his shoulders a little. Marn had no idea where Joel had learned to work his paws like that, but it felt good.
Joel was enjoying massaging his brother a little too much. His heart raced faster and faster. His paws began to slowly travel down the coyote's back, gently kneading his soft fur on the way down. He really was a little cold. The coyote-fox cautiously laid himself down on his brother's bed next to him, slowly stroking up and down his chilled fur, warming him up slowly but surely, Marn all the while shifting about and making muffled murmurs into his pillow. Joel soon curled an arm around Marn, gently stroking his side and smiling warmly. The 'yote's tail wagged harder. Joel laid his head down on Marn's pillow and gently nuzzled his ear. Said ear flicked in response, and his whole body shivered a little. He decided to try and get a verbal response out of his brother with a little whisper, but being romantic wasn't something Joel was particularly skilled at. So he softly breathed into Marn's ear, "Is this good?" The coyote-fox didn't quite see coming what happened next.
Marn whipped his head and body towards his brother and thrust his arms around Joel's torso, pulling him tightly to him and, most importantly of all, pressing his lips firmly against Joel's, eliciting a shocked "meep" out of him. The coyote-fox's eyes were shocked open, but staring at his brother's closed eyes soon convinced him to do the same. His paws nervously wrapped themselves around Marn's naked back, continuing his prior process of massaging his brother. His lips were soft and warm. Joel's mind tried to comprehend the present situation he was in, but all he could manage to think of were variations of "Oh gods!" Soon even those basic thoughts faded, replaced with something more passionate, more primitive. Marn's tongue worked itself against Joel's lips, weaseling its way into his maw and immediately seeking out his brother's tongue. Joel moaned softly, sucking on the invading love muscle, sliding his own tongue against it, tasting him, mixing their saliva. He tasted exactly like the spearmint flavor of gum Joel loved to chew. They were brothers, after all. No longer were they half-brothers to each other, there was no doubt in either of their minds.
They held their passionate embrace for the longest 60 seconds that ever ticked away. Marn slowly drew his tongue back into his mouth, panting heavily, his fur damp, his face flushed and his jaw exhausted, wearing a bashful grin on his muzzle. Joel looked almost the exact same way, but his wore what looked to be a somewhat horrified expression. Marn gently nuzzled his brother's cheek. He whispered, "Hey now, you're so much cuter when you smile, y'know."
Joel gulped. "D-do you know what we just did?" he whimpered.
Marn chuckled softly. "Well, of course I do, I was here the entire time. Right here in your arms."
The coyote-fox shook his head. "No, n-not that, I mean, you, me, w-we're--!"
"Gay for each other?" the coyote finished for him with a smirk.
Joel blushed deeply. "But...we're...brothers..."
Marn nipped at his brother's nose. "Half-brothers, remember."
"B-but, still, i-isn't this wrong? This is--"
Marn placed a single finger on his brother's muzzle. "If it is wrong, then it's only half-wrong. And who ever said we ever had to tell anyone about this? It'll just be our little secret." Joel still looked hurt. Right then, at that moment in space and time, Marn wanted nothing more than to see his lover from another mother smile. He reached down at Joel's shirt, tugging on it with both paws. "I'm still cold. Your fur's probably warmer than your shirt. May I...?" Joel's lips curled up into some sort of smile, nodding slightly. Without delay, the coyote quickly lifted the loose shirt off and tossed it away. Marn grinned down at his younger brother. The coyote-fox sported a kind of cute belly, sort of the opposite of himself in that he was kind of toned. The orange-and-white fur on his chest was suddenly more than just colors--they were the colors of his lover. He climbed on top of Joel and smirked down at him, laying himself down and rubbing his own bare chest against him. "Mmm, I feel warmer already," Marn purred into his ear.
Joel stared up at his brother for a moment, smiling warmly. He thought about what their father might say about their sudden romance. He considered maybe being able to blame it on their lack of prior friendship, and being suddenly forced to spend time with each other while they're both deep into puberty caused them to fall for each other. But something about his brother's warm, caring embrace only made him truly care about the now. He wrapped his arms and his large, fluffy tail around his lover. He leaned his head up and pecked Marn's nose. "I'm glad," he murmured. The stone in his pocket gently rolled out and tumbled out onto the soft rug on the floor.
Marn thought to himself for a moment. "You know, Joel, you never did ask me anything about me. The old bastard'll probably be home soon. Got any pressing questions for me before we tell the biggest lie of our lives?"
Joel blinked and rolled his eyes away for a moment in thought. "Well," he pondered slowly, "I have always wondered where you got the name 'Marn'. It's a pretty unusual name. Where'd you get it?"
Marn smiled warmly and gently planted his lips against his brother's for a moment. "It's the only good thing Dad ever did for me, aside from give me you. My parents named me Martin when I was born, but when I was little and tried to pronounce my name, it just came out as 'Marn'. Mom told Dad about it after their breakup, and Dad decided Marn would be my nickname from then on. It stuck with her. My name was the only thing I'd ever have to remember him by, and I was still too young to actually even remember that."
Joel slid a paw up the coyote's warm back and gently touched his face. "I know that Dad regrets what he did to you and your mom. But I've got a brother now, for the first time, and I'm in love with him." Joel slid the paw up and scritched behind his brother's ears, eliciting a soft murr from the pup. "I think Marn's a lot cuter than Martin, anyways."
Marn nodded and the two of them layed there in the dimly-lit room, merely bathing in each other's warmth. "You know this is really gay, right?"
"Yeah, I know."
In silence they cuddled with each other for a few more minutes before they heard a door open downstairs.
