Chapter 6

Transformation or Evolution?

Naruto walked forward his fox nose to the ground as he sniffed out the succubus' scent. Sakura and Hinata following behind him. It had been an hour since they had left and the two had been bickering the moment they were out of earshot. “We would've had this wrapped up if you hadn't continued that argument." Hinata hissed.

Sakura glared, “You were the one humping me!" she snapped.

The huntress was red faced, “And you humped me!" She shouted.

Naruto raised his head, causing the two to stop, “Would you both please be quiet I'm trying to hunt this thing, who the fuck cares whose fault it is. Let's just find this thing and get this over with." He said in a very tired voice.

They stared at him then at each other and Hinata held out one hand the other behind her back, “Truce?" She said, crossing her fingers behind her back.

Sakura mimicked her, “Truce." She said despite neither fully meaning it.

Naruto lowered his head, “Good, it's gonna take a while. Her scent is really far away from here." he said and he went back to sniffing unaware of Hinata and Sakura making faces at each other as they walked.

They walked a decent bit into the evening and even into the night before Hinata finally gave the call to set up camp off the trail. Hinata and Sakura sat by the fire as Naruto was out hunting for food.

Sakura looked at Hinata, “So how long you gonna keep this love thing going?" She asked.

Hinata looked at her, “This thing again, look he'll mark me when he can just not now." she said.

The oni smirked, “And what makes you so sure he will? Maybe he'll mark me first cause it'd look more acceptable to the humans?" she taunted.

Hinata reached for her sword and Sakura her club they barely grabbed them when Naruto landed several feet away in his mouth was a cow. He looked at them as they put their hands down quickly. Eventually set the cow down, “Before you asked this was a cow just wandering about, there's like four more where I found this." He explained, “And they aren't owned by humans I smelled them." came the assurance. He looked at the cow then at them, “What's going on?" he asked, eyes narrowing.

Hinata grabbed her sword, she stood up and walked to the cow before slicing it's head clean off. She tossed it to Naruto, who snapped it out of the air out of reflex. He chewed it up, the skull cracking with each powerful bite.

“Nothing." She said shortly as she grabbed one of her knives and quickly began skinning it, once it was skinned she began to cut the meat.

Sakura watched on, a little jealous as Hinata skillfully and precisely accomplished her task.

“Alright this is for you." Hinata said giving the much larger and muscular pieces to Naruto, “This is for me." she listed, taking a large strip of the beef and haunch. “This is for you." She said finally, handing some small strips of beef to Sakura who scowled.

She glared at Hinata, “Okay I can get Naruto's portions, but what makes you think I can eat so little?" She growled.

Hinata stuck out her tongue when Naruto growled, “Give her more food." He ordered. Hinata sighed then gave the haunch to Sakura, a frown in place the whole time.

Sakura caught it, and winked at Naruto who only responded by biting down on the meat and swallowing it. She held it in one hand and used her electricity to quickly fry it; when it had browned enough she stopped and bit down to get a slight jolt of electricity through her body. “Tingly." She giggle, her pink hair just a bit frazzled.

Hinata was cooking her portion and seasoning it as well, ignoring Sakura as best she could.

She instead turned her attention to Naruto, “Want me to cook some of that?" She offered.

Naruto looked down then grabbed the meat he had yet to eat and used his tail to hand it to her. She reached for her waist and opened a pouch, pulling out a piece of paper . The strip of paper was set it on the ground just a few inches away from the fire. On the paper was the image of a cooking spit. She then pulled a dagger and sliced her thumb and she pressed the now bleeding thumb on the paper, which glowed briefly before a cooking spit emerged from the paper fully formed and ready to be used. Like clockwork the spit was rapidly set up and the meat and seasonings placed within it.

Sakura stared “That's nifty." she commented.

Hinata smiled, “Paper storing magic it's still in development but it's believed that someone could store an entire army in these one day. So far simple tools is all we can put in here. Who knows, maybe we can store monsters in here too? As a safer means of relocating mostly harmless but problematic beings."

Naruto flicked one ear, “And live tests?" he wondered.

She frowned at that, “So far everything that goes in dies the moment it turns into ink, cause of actual death is unknown but assumed to be suffocation." she explained.

The fox just growled, “As I thought." he then went back to eating his meat.

Hinata began to turn the cooking meat, gently seasoning and making sure the juices of the fat soaked in. She did this for 10 minutes, and by then it was glistening gold. Naruto finished snapping up the last of his meal before standing up to watch Hinata as she worked.

He walked over to her as she grabbed the metal pole and pulled her meat off then handing the stick to Naruto, who grabbed it and began to eat up the now cooked haunch. The flavors were amazing, far better than before, Despite doing his best to slow down and savor it, he ate it heartily, devouring it in less than a minute.

As he swallowed the last hunk of meat he looked at Hinata, his tongue licking his lips, “You know if you retire you could have a career as a cook." he complimented as he lowered his head to nuzzle her.

The form used to save energy and time, since she didn't know what her dreamer would crave just yet.

The dreams were quite a way off, by human standard walking time it was about 4 days away; if she were to fly it would have taken just shy of 20 hours, but her dream form wasn't restrained by silly limitations like that. -Morning-

Naruto, Hinata, and Sakura woke up, however they didn't feel well rested, quite the opposite, they felt they hadn't even got a minutes worth of sleep in. Their eyes had bags and their mouths opened into uncontrollable yawns that almost lulled them back into sleep. “Shit I feel like… shit…" Sakura grumbled “I was having a nice dream then poof! It vanished and went straight down horrible." While Naruto and Sakura couldn't understand Hinata had a suspicion as to what happened. She knew that succubi, despite popular belief, had clans that specialized in various forms of seduction and mental magic. If her hypothesis was right then the succubus they were chasing had dream powers. Which would be trouble, she knew that for a succubus a person's mind was like a buffet. They could devour aspects of a person's mind freely; memories, dreams, even desires but the last one belonged to a breed of succubi that long extinct or at the very least had hidden themselves away so nobody could find an kill them.

Hinata rubbed her head, “Alright shit… we gotta… go-uuuuaaahhh." she yawned widely. “Ugh we gotta keep following the trail. But be careful I bet this succubus left us some traps." She said.

Naruto yawned and lowered his head eyes closed, but a slap from Hinata woke him, “I-I'm up, I'm up!" He spluttered, “Wh-wh-whyyyyyyyyyyy…" he yawned, “Why am I so tired?" He eventually asked.

Hinata rubbed her head, “Well I don't know if this is true but a theory was made about sleep and dreams; the sign of a good healthy rest is that you dream. If you don't dream then you aren't asleep, or at least not getting a good rest." She explained.

Naruto rubbed his head, “So she did something to our dreams?" He asked.

Hinata nodded, “Most likely. We can't go to sleep again either or she'll mess with our dreams again. We just have to go forward." She said, though yawned loudly afterward, unable to help it.

Naruto growled in response, feeling his frustration building already. That was a really good dream…

“I know it sucks, but this is how it has to be, at least for a while" she tried to mollify him, stroking his head soothingly. He gave a weak whimper and got to his feet, stretched then began to walk with his head low, sniffing the ground in an effort to follow the trail.

Hinata and Sakura quickly caught up after clearing out the camp.

-Several Hours Later-

Naruto grunted as he held back the large boulder while Sakura charged up her magic to smash it to bits while Hinata helped Naruto out. This boulder was the 5th trap today that they had come across. There had, so far, only been two forms of traps. The first was a broken rock ledge, while the second was a rain of rubble. Both forms of traps took advantage of the mountainous path they were traversing. They had defeated each trap, but each time it wore them down and soured their mood even further.

Sakura shouted a slightly strained, “Ready!"

Hinata let go, while Naruto pivoted and used the momentum to hurl the boulder Sakura's way. She swung and the club smashed into it, electricity sparking everywhere as it exploded into charged bits, pieces flying wildly about.

Naruto growled, “Ugh this is so frustrating! I'm tired as hell but I can't sleep!" he punched the rock wall with said frustration, his hand plowing wrist deep. He pulled it out with a rock in hand and crushed it.

Hinata sighed as she felt her muscles bulge slightly then recede. She sat down, yawning loudly. “Huuuaaahhh, I don't like it either but we don't have any dream wards." she explained.

Sakura sat down next to her, “Dream wards? Wh-Whaaaaaauuugh," she yawned, “What are those?" She finished.

Hinata rubbed her hair, “They're special charms that prevent anything from invading a person's dreams. They're hard to make but valuable. Back at the base we've got tons of them stockpiled."

Sakura slapped her cheeks to shake off her growing tiredness, “Then why didn't you bring any?!" She snarled.

Naruto growled as well, but remained silent.

Hinata glared at them, holding up her fingers. “One, I didn't know we'd be needing them, I didn't exactly know what we would be dealing with, much less a succubus of the dream tribe. Two, the dream succubus tribe was thought to be wiped out; we have so many dream wards because the tribe was wiped out, we have the supply but barely any demand for them." she explained harshly, rubbing her face sourly.

Naruto raised his head, “Dream tribe?" he had to ask.

Hinata sighed but knew that thinking about it would make her more alert, “The succubus, as a race, specialize in mental magic. They feed off of lustful energy. However certain succubi focus on particular mental magics. For example some tribes focus on conscious thought, other tribes focus on subconscious thought, and so on and so forth. The dream tribe focused on dreams; they could go into dreams and change them, draw power from them, and some believe even eat them. You could imagine why they were hunted down, we thought we had gotten rid of all of them but I guess we missed one."

Naruto scratched his ear with his foot, “So, what, we gonna kill her?" He asked, “Honestly I wouldn't mind that at this point..."

Hinata shook her head, “No, we need to capture her. If possible we should bring her back to the Hunters Guild. If we can figure out what her tribe can do we can possibly discover some way to replicate their abilities for our own." She decided, “Who knows, we may find a way to give someone only good dreams?"

Naruto smiled at that, “As if that was possible." He scoffed as he stood up, stretching his back with a satisfying series of pops. “Let's keep going."

-3 Days Later-

Ino hovered high up in the sky, she was begrudgingly impressed. Between her goings back and forth, even with all the traps she had set the three had gone through all of them. She didn't eat their dreams, but she did rile them up so they couldn't sleep well. It was making them extremely irritable and short tempered. They argued hourly, and even devolved into physical violence once, but despite it all they stuck together. She knew that he would be displeased…

Speak of the devil. She shuddered as she felt the alien mind invading hers, 'What are you doing… destroy them! Don't forget what I have... ' Ino gritted her teeth, she still had some power but she knew it wouldn't be enough. But she had to try something.

Naruto scratched his fur in irritation, his claws digging into his skin tearing it only for it to heal rapidly. Hinata's eyes were red rimmed with heavy bags under them, her suit torn in places from Naruto's claws from their prior scuffle. Sakura was in her oni form, unable to maintain the concentration for her human form, her eyes twitching from the slack of sleep while welts and bruises from Hinata's fists still remained on her form. They had fought last night and had only regained their senses when Naruto had realized what they were doing and had used his tails to restrain them both. The last thing on their minds was to capture the succubus; it was more of a, 'Let's utterly pulverize her' type of mindset they had now, instead of the relatively calm and collected 'search and capture' plan from a few days ago.

They walked to the path and saw it broke off to the left with a ridge. There was a sign on the ridge, it read 'Valenu Village'. Hinata blinked as she took it on. “This village..."

Sakura sighed, “It won't matter, not like we can get a good night's sleep." She muttered.

But Hinata shook her head, “Actually, I think we will. I remember this village." she explained, voice gaining strength as her memory provided some hope of respite, “There was a report of some type of mind invading monster here so they sent a hunter to investigate. The hunter was equipped with mental wards, including dream wards. This should be that village! But if this is that village it means we have one of the more… aggressive huntress' here."

Naruto rumbled, “Who cares as long as we get to sleep!" voicing the opinion they were all thinking.

Hinata stood in front of him, “Whoa now, don't just go charging in, let me talk to her. If I do you won't have to fight her."

The great monster scratched his ear, “Is she really that bad?"

The huntress nodded slowly at the partially correct answer, “Well more of she's that good, she's got quite the kill list is out on the field like 78% of the time, and she would just love for a reason to add you to that list. Also she might not be aware of the program yet, but knowing her brother she probably does due to what happened weeks ago. He's a bit of a crybaby but just in case. Follow me but keep your distance, the last thing I need is for you to fight her while we're like this." She instructed. She started down the path, Naruto and Sakura keeping up with her from a distance.

Hinata got to the gate, which she mentally argued the point of considering there was a ledge and mountain path looming overhead. She stood at the gate and two soldiers stood at the top, “Speak your business!" shouted one.

The huntress looked up, “I'm a Huntress from the Guild. I've been tracking a succubus and came upon this village. I know there's been reports of a mind monster here, and a Huntress was sent here. I would speak with her." She shouted back, doing her best to keep her sleep deprived impatience out of her voice.

The soldiers stood aside as a woman leaped up next to them. On her back was a large axe, the blade easily as big as herself with a large steel handle. She was muscular and wore very little; just a breastplate and metal slacks. Her muscles shone in the light and had a strange sheen to it. She had long brown hair and on her cheeks two upside down triangle marks. This was Hana, a powerful huntress and the older sister to Kiba. While she was alot more level headed than her brother she was just as ferocious and had gotten into trouble plenty of times due to misunderstanding a situation. Like the rest of her family, she preferred action over diplomacy, despite her relatively calmer disposition.

Hana stared at Hinata, “You're not the backup I requested, are you?" She asked.

Hinata shook her head, “No, But I'm here for the very same reason you are." She then began to explain what had happened.

Hana nodded, “So a succubus is responsible, and one of the dream tribe… that complicates things even more… Let them in." She ordered the guardsman next to her.

The soldier's looked at her, “'Them?'" one asked, only seeing one woman below.

The muscular huntress pointed at the path, “She's got two monsters there, let them in; they're on our side. They'll need accommodations as well." She explained before she jumped down.

Meanwhile, the soldiers stared at Naruto and Sakura as the two slowly walked out of the treeline making themselves visible in a nonthreatening manner as possible.

Naruto blinked, “We can sleep here?" He asked, noting the guards staring at him.

Hinata nodded, “Yes we can finally go to sleep."

Naruto sighed, “Finally..." He lowered himself so that the two can leap on his back, when they did he walked in as the gate opened and was lead by a nervous man to the Inn.

Once they were inside, save Naruto who stayed outside, and were given food under orders of Hana, a veritable feast. They ate heartily and were asleep soon afterward.

-That night-

Ino growled as she hovered over the village, the dream wards prevented her from getting close with her dream powers, and even if she got in using them she would set the wards off, creating an impenetrable cage that would trap her.

She felt the alien infiltration in her mind again, 'You will pay for this… return to me… now!' She shuddered but had no choice, she had to obey. She flew off, toward the ruins that were situated above the north mountain of the village.

Naruto yawned, stretching his arms and curling his fingers. His legs twitching and his back popped loudly, drawing a grown of satisfaction from him. 'Finally I could sleep and what a dream too… haaaa if only...' He lamented.

Settling down he began to groom himself… or he would've had he not noticed the villagers watching him. They were mumbling and had pitchforks in hand, not quite threateningly, but certainly there. He would've said something when a loud “AHEM!" sounded behind them. They turned and parted to reveal Hinata standing there looking cross.

“Is there a reason why you're here around my partner with pitchforks in hand?" She demanded, hands on her hips, her armor and weapons clanking meaningfully.

They mumbled quietly then one shouted, “He's a monster!"

Hinata rolled her eyes, “Wow what a breakthrough." Her voice heavy with sarcasm, “There's a program that we created where a Hunter or Huntress may be partnered with tame monsters to fight other monsters. He's part of that program, in fact he's the origin of that program, so unless you wanna start a row with the Guild I suggest you back… off… now!" She growled, her wonky sleep schedule making her far more aggressive than she normally would be.

They glared at her but slowly but surely they walked off, their pitchforks lowered. Hinata walked up to Naruto who gave her an affectionate lick.

“Thanks for that." He said. He began to groom himself while Hinata adjusted her hair and armor. She eventually went back inside the Inn and after several minutes came out with a hunk of raw meat in hand. She held it up, Naruto's ears flicking in acknowledgement, and she tossed it toward him. He got out of his grooming long enough to snap up the meat and he tilted his head back as he chewed, the delicious meal sliding into his throat, a delighted growl escaping him.

He shook himself as he stood up, stretched once more before he directed his gaze towards his lover. “So, shall we go hunting?" he asked.

Sakura walked toward them, “Why? Won't she be out looking for food?"

Naruto pointed at the ruin looming above, “Yeah but we can set up a trap of our own in the meantime, think of it as early payback." he said, “Well?" he asked his mates.

Hinata gave a dark smile, “I'd like that but I talked with Hana and we might be in over our heads."

The monsters looked at each other then at her, “Why?" came the simultaneous question.

Hinata pointed up to the ruins, “Apparently there's a monster with strong magical powers here. Hana put out a request of a spellcaster hunter to come but they hadn't. Then again it's not without reason." she said frowning at the last bit.

Sakura scratched her head, “I don't see how." she said.

The huntress sighed, “Spellcaster hunters are rare mainly due to A: they don't like being in the front of a fight, B: not every human can use spells, C: we only have so many of them. In our particular group we only have 30 of them. Monsters however all have the power to us magic and the best way to combat magic is with magic. So what does that leave us with?" she asked.

Naruto put it together, “It means your stretched thin, quite literally a, 'work with what you got' situation."

Hinata nodded, “Yep so up to you two if you really want to fight this thing."

Ino sighed, “Oh poo, I'd been hoping to remain hidden until we got to your 'guild' to reappear. It would've given them a spook and I would've offered my services but it seems I'll have to do that now." Naruto's body stiffened and he let out a warning growl.

Hinata looked at Sakura, “What was that about?" she asked quietly, never had they seen Naruto lose his temper with a single word.

Ino was silent, 'Seems like that was a sore spot, good to know. I don't understand though, why does he hate it? He was so happy in his memories...' She wondered.

Naruto was angry, this was definitely something he didn't want to be reminded of, “A time long gone." He had stopped to allow Sakura and Hinata onto his back ignoring Ino's huff. As he walked back he was silent his mind constantly recalling memories he desperately and furiously tried to repress but they kept coming to him over and over again. The shadowy figures of a man and a woman dressed in regal robes of white and red. A boy running up to them smiling his hair and face hidden in darkness.

Hinata and Sakura didn't dare to say a word even as Ino floated behind them looking nervous. They could feel his muscles tensing and twitching with each step.

After two days of this they reached the guild HQ. Hinata slid off of him as did Sakura, the huntress finally dared to speak, “We'll get Ino registered, ok?" She said in a worried tone.

She took his silence as an affirmation, and the two headed off.

Naruto watched her go and sighed, looking to the sky, “I can't escape it, can I...?" he muttered, “No matter what… I can't just… forget it all in the end."
