Chapter 1

"Hey! HEY! IT'S WAKING UP!"

"Oh calm down Eiker... It doesn't even have claws."

The dark furred wolf looked away from the source of his concerns. "Easy for you to say. You explain what this thing is or what the hell this place is, then I'll calm down."

All the squirrel could do was roll her eyes. The two had been on many excursions together by this point and this was a common reaction for him. Her tail twitched irritably despite the fact she was used to this now. "Why don't you just get your blade out in case there is something to worry about."

He shoots her his usual nasty glance before doing just that. "You really should be nicer. I mean, I am the predator here after all."

"And I'm always the one that keeps you from biting off more than you can chew." She watches the creature that she can only assume is important considering the maze they had to go through to reach it. Though it must be a she... 'After all it does have the mark of a female between it's legs like me...' She notes to herself. The odd creature has no fur, just the two toned hair flowing from her head and laying around it within the odd coffin they found it in. Red at the roots and fading to blonde, then a near platinum color at the tips. Her skin is almost ivory with only the slightest hint of tanning. Her body screams to anyone who would know that this is a child, but the ones looking now have never seen anything like her before and can only venture to guess at it's age.

Her eyes flutter open and seem to be looking at nothing and holding no deep thoughts in the green blue pools that they resemble.

The wolf grumbles, watching this thing as it seemingly comes to life. "I'm warning you though. If this, thing, is some monster like that last cave you dragged me into I'm not going to let you have whatever I find here."

"Whatever..." The squirrel sighs and looks at some windows that are flashing images and some glowing stones that seem to be set into the metal walls and tables.

Eiker, the wolf, holds his sword point down at the creature in the coffin. He looks over the curves of this thing's body. 'If it were a normal creature with a body like that... slender hips... thin neck... long legs...' He shakes his head to get rid of that train of thought. 'That tigeress was nice to look at too, until she showed her claws.'

The girl in the coffin blinks and gains conciousness, it seems, because she looks right at the tip of the sword hovering above her. She follows the blade up to the handle and looks at the one holding the blade. She smiles.

"Zanya... It's looking at meeee..." the wolf whines with his ears splaying back.

The squirrel smirks and turns back to look. "Well good. There is a female that can scare you with a look." She steps closer and reaches into the metal and glass coffin to rest a paw on the creature's chest and feel it's heartbeat. "Well, at least I can say it's alive. Unless it's the most complex golem I've ever encountered." She smiles and moves her paw up to scritch under the girl's chin.

The girl coos and closes her eyes. All the wolf can do is stare.

"She seems to be just a cub. Before you ask look at that window there." She points to a screen displaying a form similar to that they found. It changes shape as if aging, showing it growing breasts and getting taller. The wolf just blinks with his mouth open at the changing image. A moving painting as far as he's concerned.

The squirrel smiles and slips an arm under the girl to help her sit up. "Do you have a name, little one?"

The girl just looks at the squirrel dumbly for almost a full minute then simply smiles and reaches out to pet the fuzzy thing's head. She giggles at the surprised look the squirrel has now.

"Great... So we picked up a kid. You think there's any value to this place or is the kid the only reason for it?" The wolf sheathes his sword and starts to look around. He knows by now that if his partner thinks it's a good idea to play, it must be safe.

"I don't know. Why don't you look around. You're the one that seems to know what shiney things will sell well. I'm just here to find ways through traps." She tugs at the girl's arms trying, to get her to stand and step out onto the ground on wobbly legs.

The wolf does just that. Zanya reaches into her pack on the floor and pulls out a cape to wrap the girl in. She leads the girl out into the hallway the pair of explorers came from. "Wait here a minute sweetie." She taps the girl's nose and smiles at her. She turns to go back into the room and squeeks as her heart jumps into her throat. The girl is hugging her tail and giggling as she snuggles it like a stuffed toy. Zanya sighs and works to pry the girl off before stepping back into the room.

***THREE YEARS LATER***

"But I wanna come with you guys." The teenaged girl protested.

"No Shyan. I've been telling you ever since you were old enough to leave alone why you can not come with us into a town." The squirrel was in the process of shouldering her pack as she spoke.

"Because I could cause some kind of panic because I'm not like everyone else." The girl says in a way that entails she's heard it more times than she has bothered to count. "But I want to look at the dresses and baubles like you and Eiker always bring back for me. I want to see what there is to choose from myself. It makes me feel like a princess in one of those stories with towers you guys always used to tell me, getting snippets of the outside world but never seeing it myself."

Eiker steps up at this point and rests a paw on the girl's shoulder and chuckles. "Well if you tried coming into town with us you might just end up in a tower somewhere."

Shyan, that being the girl's name she recieved after she had been found, sticks her tongue out at him and mopes over to sit on a fallen log. She always hates that they're right. All they've taught her about the world she can't be in tells her. But that doesn't make her like it any more.

Eiker shakes his head and just looks the girl over. Three years and she'd come to be like a daughter to him. Beautiful to him now that he knew her and had seen how she had changed. He looks over her soft features and remembers how little protection she truly needs at times. Even if she doesn't have claws or fangs. She learned to play at swords with him and even beat him afew times by now. She held a part of his heart now. Like a daughter she had also strengthened his ties to his partner until they fell in love. Three years wandering from place to place and keeping at work like before while hiding a child from the world. Hunting for money as mercinaries and explorers, this was all life was before her.

He wraps an arm around the shorter squirrel and kisses the top of her head. "Ready to go sweetcheeks?"

Zanya blushes in her ears slightly and frowns, "What have I told you about calling me that?"

"Well you always say you like it when we're curled up together."

"Eiker! Not in front of Shyan. It's not right for a girl her age to hear lover's talk like that."

Shyan just giggles, feeling her mood lighten a little as she sees Eiker wink at her and shrug.

Zanya baps the back of the wolf's head with her tail and smiles, "Well we should be off if we plan on making it back before dark, my love."

Eiker nods, "Of course sweet er... sweetie." He bares his teeth in a nervous, forced smile he hopes covers what he almost said.

Zanya shakes her head and chuckles as she breaks away with a flick of her tail, leaving the wolf to stumble a little to catch up. "We should be back before dark Shyan. Remember the rules and stay hidden." She waves her tail in parting as both mates head around a bend in the trail.

Shyan flops onto her back on the ground to look up at the clouds. "Another dull day all alone. If those two would at least have a cub I could take care of it while they're gone." She sighs and rolls onto her side to watch the bugs in the sparse grass of the forest floor. She's used to doing such things, or napping. Slipping into odd thoughts and dreams that sometimes confuse her or make her upset enough to cry. She's already reached the age of bleeding. That, Zanya had told her, meant she was almost an adult.

She wanders to a stream nearby and hops out onto a rock in the middle to look down at her reflection. Her looks were fairly plain. She didn't know why she knew this, seeing as she had never met another like her. She had soft spots, freckles they are known as to some, on her skin in places. Her skin had become well tanned in the three years she had been awake, dark but still able to be called light in tone. Her hair still carries the colors of when she had first woken up. She cupped her chest thinking to herself and wondered if her breasts would be as large or larger than her surogate mother's. She was already as tall as her, though her hips were still slimmer than the older female's. She looked at the smooth skin of her bare arms, bare because she had told the other's she had come to preffer such clothing, whether it be a dress or something more fitting for a male to wear.

Her present dress is simple. Made from a single sheet of material, cut and sewn back together to make a long skirt and attached sleevless blouse. The color is a wine red. One of her favorites.

She hugs her legs to her chest and murrs, a habit she has from spending much time with a canine. She sniffles and hides her face in her legs. "Why am I such a freak..? No fur... I can't see in the dark as well... no claws... no fangs..." She chokes a little before beginning to cry. This too is a normal part of her isolation when left to herself. Wishing she were normal and able to enjoy the world forbidden to her.
