Facade
As promised the next chapter is here. There is some mild violence and strong language in this chapter. As always comments are welcomed.
Mark yawned as he slowly opened his eyes. He looked around the room to find he had once again awoken alone. He tried to get Lucas to sleep in with him but the canine had reminded him that he had responsibilities to take care of. Foxy, while being Mark’s mate now, had insisted he still sleep in the barn. Mark smiled to himself as he walked out of his bedroom and into the living room. Sebastian smiled at him and brought him his breakfast. The cheetah chuckled at seeing the human in only a pair of boxer briefs.
“Good morning Mark, I see we are dressing casually today.” Mark blushed, “well nobody else around here wears anything except shorts and now that Jeremy’s gone I see no need for modesty.” The cheetah smiled, “well I’m glad you feel comfortable enough around us to let your guard down like this.” Mark nodded, “you all are my family now. I trust each of you completely as you have given me no reason not to. Now if I could just convince Lucas to sleep in more often it would be perfect!” Sebastian chuckled, “you have a better chance of convincing the sun not to rise. He is a worker its all he knows. You too are a worker however I’m happy that you have taken all our advice and started taking it easy some.”
Mark chuckled as he sipped his coffee, “you all will spoil me if you keep this up. I have agreed to take it easy because everyone kept insisting but I won’t sit around all the time without helping work. I will never ask any of you to do anything I wouldn’t do myself. We are equals here, your not my servants.” The cheetah nodded, “of course we all know that. Changing the subject, how are you feeling? You have had a lot to cope with as of late.”
Mark smiled, “Sebastian thank you for your concern but I’m alright. When I first heard father was dead it shocked me. He was a harsh man but its all I knew. Instantly I was thrown out of my comfort zone. Then, you all showed up and taught me that I still have a lot to live for.” Sebastian nodded, “you have given a lot to us as well. Its gone both ways my friend. What are your plans today?” Mark grinned, “while everyone is out in the fields I’m going to do some work in the barn.” Sebastian chuckled, “you really don’t get the meaning of taking it easy do you?” Mark shook his head, “after all you have done for me its the least I can do. I’m going to put up some fans to circulate air, I want to buy some actual beds for you all but I don’t know if that would pass inspection.”
Sebastian chuckled, “straw is just fine dear, after all when I had a master I didn’t even have a bed I had to sleep on the floor. Straw is alright but a full blown bed would raise some eyebrows.” Mark nodded, “I want to make you all as comfortable as I can.” The cheetah nodded, “we appreciate that, but you need to prepare yourself for something dear. Its likely a government inspector will visit you today. My contacts say your on the schedule but didn’t know the exact time. You will need to behave in a way your not used to. You cannot use our names, you cannot act as though Lucas or Foxy is your mate, and you HAVE to treat us like possessions.” Mark sighed softly, “hun I don’t know if I can do that. I don’t want to hurt any of you.”
The cheetah smiled, “we will not be harmed by pretending this. In fact if you don’t then we could all be harmed yourself included. They will ask to see your fur ledger. In it is all our identification numbers with our duties listed beside them. For example I’m listed as house custodian, Foxy is listed as your personal servant, Lucas is listed as the farm’s foreman and the rest are listed as farmhands.” Mark nodded, “I don’t know your identification numbers will that be a problem?” The cheetah shook his head, “no its not necessary for you to know them. So long as they are all listed properly then we are alright. Furthermore, it may be necessary for you to hit one of us to prove the point that your the master and us the slaves.”
Mark shook his head, “I won’t do that. I won’t do to you what was done to me!” Sebastian sighed, “Mark normally your right you wouldn’t, however if you don’t drive the point home to the government that all is normal here then they will come in and take us all away including you. I’ve already spoken to the others about this and prepared them as well.” Mark nodded, “I understand. I don’t like it but I understand.” Mark sat in silence as he finished his breakfast. Sebastian sighed to himself as the human walked back into his bedroom to get ready for the day. He wished he could shield the boy from this but it just wasn’t possible.
A knock at the front door brought the cheetah out of his thoughts. He sighed softly as he walked to the door and opened it. Standing on the front porch was a government official holding a data pad. Sebastian bowed humbly, “good morning sir.” The human eyed the cheetah with disgust as he pushed his way though the front door, “where’s your master?” The cheetah closed the door and stayed where he was, “master is in his bedroom sir, shall I go get him for you?” The human sighed, “of course you brain dead cheetah why the hell else would I be here!” Sebastian nodded as he walked into the bedroom.
Mark walked out of the bedroom, “good morning Sir, what can I do for you today?” The inspector sighed, “I’m here to inspect your fur’s.” Mark nodded, “where would you like to start?” The human sighed again, “with your ledger obviously!” Mark eyed the man in front of him. He had heard the exchange between the man and Sebastian. While he understood the necessity of this, he wasn't prepared to stand by and allow the man to insult him or his friends. Mark walked upto the inspector, “look I don’t know or care if you like your job or not. While you are on my property you will treat me and my possessions with respect is that understood. Otherwise you can get the fuck off my property and leave my servants to do their jobs in peace. Gods know I have enough trouble getting work out of them without you screwing it up!” The inspector eyed mark for a moment then smiled, “very good that’s part one passed.”
Mark stood looking confused as the inspector chuckled, “I apologize for my attitude, we like to make sure that owners are willing to stand up for themselves. If they won’t stand up for themselves to us then how could they possibly stand upto outside influences. We live in dangerous times, we just want to make sure that owners have the courage to stand up for themselves.” Mark nodded as he showed the inspector into the office, “my ledger is there on the desk. I believe you will find everything in order.” The inspector nodded, “I’m sure I will. You have six furs listed here, why so many?” Mark chuckled, “well I asked myself the same question when I got them. The honest truth is there more property here than I am currently utilizing. So after my father was killed in the attack and I took over I made the decision to bring them on so I could expand our operations. We simply don't have the income to hire the required workforce to utilize such a large farm. However, a one time investment gets me unlimited work, I don’t have to pay a wage or benefits and I don’t have to listen to bitching from farmhands about too much work. So after considerable thought it just made good financial sense to go ahead and make the purchase.”
The inspector nodded, “very good that’s the reason we have on file. I see you have a fur foreman why is that?” Mark took a seat in another chair and looked at the inspector, “I was nervouse about it at first, but frankly it just made sense to me. I can’t watch over them all the time, its just not practical and frankly if I tried it would defeat the purpose of having them. I know the bond a fur has to their counterparts so one to punish as an example keeps them in line. Furthermore, after working hard my entire life it lets me step back and enjoy the benefits of being a master.” The inspector nodded, “very good answers. Its not exactly common for a fur to be a foreman, but I’ll admit under the circumstances it makes a lot of sense. I have no issue with it so long as you don’t. Though I will warn you a lot of furs are rising up against their masters and you are heavily outnumbered doesn’t that concern you.”
Mark grinned as he yelled, “cheetah get your ass in here!” Sebastian walked into the room, “yes master?” “What did I tell you all your first night here would happen if you didn’t follow my every order?” Sebastian, with his head held down and his ears laid back, “master you told us you would put a bullet through our worthless brains if we so much as put a foot out of line.” Mark nodded, “exactly now get your ass back in the kitchen and clean it. I better not see anything out of place if you value living.” The cheetah nodded and backed out of the room. The inspector chuckled, “that was a little harsh wasn’t it?”
Mark turned to the inspector, “I say it wasn’t harsh enough. You have to keep your thumb on these bastards otherwise you get the problems that killed my father. Furs are no different than any other livestock, if you don’t keep them in line they cause problems.” The inspector nodded, “if more understood that then we wouldn’t have the problems we do.” Mark nodded, “the issue is you have masters that treat them like people. That only causes problems.” Mark took a deep breath and nodded, “what else would you like to see?” The inspector stood up, “their living quarters. However, first a question. You have a fox listed as a personal servant why is that.” Mark smiled, “oh I was lucky to get him. The slut came from a brothel and he’s very talented.” The inspector nodded as Mark continued, “is that a problem?”
The inspector chuckled, “not at all. I didn’t ask that question in an official manner I was just curious?” Mark grinned, “would you like to test him out? He’s very good at what he does.” The inspector blushed, “no that’s not necessary. Take me to their housing.” Mark nodded and walked to the barn. As he walked through the door, Foxy saw the inspector and stood with his head bowed and ears flattened. “Master is there anything I can do for you.” Mark shook his head, “no fox I will call you when I need you, you are dismissed go see if the cheetah needs any help in the house.” Foxy bowed humbly, “yes sir.” Mark growled as he walked over to Foxy, “what the fuck did you call me?” Mark backhanded the fox, “what did I tell your slutty ass about calling me anything except master.”
The blow knocked Foxy to the ground. He quickly got to his hands and knees, “I’m sorry master it won’t happen again.” Mark nodded, “your god damn right it won’t if you know whats good for you. Now get out of my sight before I change my mind!” Foxy quickly got to his feet and scrambled out of the barn. Mark turned to the inspector, “see what I said, you have to keep them in their place otherwise they run all over you. His last master was too lax on him and now I’m having to correct that.” The inspector smiled as he made notes. He examined the living conditions, “why is there a kitchen and bathroom out here?” Mark laughed, “because I don’t want their furry asses in the house any more than they have to be. They are livestock so they live with the livestock. Is that a problem?” The inspector shook his head, “not at all. I like seeing setups like this, if more masters were like you we would all be better off. I’m happy to say you pass with flying colors.
I’m also happy to say the government will be approving your heritage status. I’m glad to see operations like this still going. Its furs that make it possible. I’m authorizing you to expand your workforce as you see fit. I see nothing here that concerns me in the least. However, if you have problems with any of your livestock feel free to call us. We are here to help.” With that the inspector made a few final notes and walked back to the house. Foxy and Sebastian was busy in the kitchen as Mark shook his hand and the inspector walked to his car and left.
Mark walked into the kitchen, dropped to his knees, and burst into tears. Foxy sighed as he walked over to the human. He got on his knees and pulled Mark into a hug, “its alright baby, your alright.” Mark sobbed uncontrollably, b...b...but I talked bad about you and hit you. How could you not hate me now! I feel so disgusting now, the things I said...” Foxy chuckled, “because that was the plan hun. You did perfectly I do not blame you for doing what you had to do. You did not hit me hard enough to hurt me I’ve been hit much harder.” Mark looked into the fox’s eyes, “I’m so sorry Foxy, I’m so sorry.” Foxy nodded, “an apology is not necessary however I forgive you. Now come on, cheer up hun.” Mark dried his eyes as he stood up. “The inspector approved me for as many furs as I want.” The cheetah smiled, “see everything worked out. Me and Foxy talked this morning and we knew it would have to be one of us that you hit.” Foxy nodded and continued, “I was hoping you would get the hint when I called you sir. I was holding my breath because had you not hit me it would have caused problems.”
Mark nodded, “that doesn’t make it any easier. I’m glad the others wasn’t here to see that. I know it had to happen but I don’t want them to ever see me that way. I never want them to see that out of me.” The cheetah nodded, “even if they had been here they would have understood. Now why don’t you and foxy go to your bedroom. The others will be here for lunch in a bit.” Foxy picked up Mark and walked towards the bedroom. He lay the human in bed, undressed him, then lay beside his human and held him. He knew this had been devastating to Mark, and wished he could make it all better. Having to keep this facade up with the government wouldn't be easy. However some unpleasant acting now saved them a lot of grief in the future.
Lucas wiped his forehead as he walked into the house. He carefully looked around as Sebastian chuckled, “the inspection is finished. I’m happy to say we passed with flying colors.” The canine nodded, “thats good. Did everything to according to plan?” The cheetah nodded, “yeah Mark was frighteningly convincing. Although it did take a tole on him. Foxy took him to his bedroom and is staying with him. Having to say the things he did really affected him, but the worst of it was having to hit Foxy” Lucas nodded, “I wish you would have let me be here for him during the inspection.”
The cheetah shook his head, “it was difficult enough on him with me and Foxy seeing that him have to act that way. I think a lot of the issues its caused him is because he never wanted to have to be like his father. Now he's had to be exactly like his father and the last thing he needed with both of his mates seeing him that way. While I know it wouldn’t have affected the way you view him, he wouldn’t see it that way.” Lucas nodded, “your right of course, I just hate it had to happen at all.” Sebastian nodded, “I wish we could have protected him from it but there was no way to. On a positive note we were granted heritage status and approved for as many furs as we want. So everything is lining up like we had hoped it would.” Lucas nodded, “goodness knows we could use the help. Granted I know that’s not the main goal here but its a nice side effect.” Sebastian nodded, “I know. The only way to stay below the radar here is to make this a fully functioning farm and that means manpower to make it work.
Now that this problem is behind us we can move forward with the improvements. The grant money will be available to us tomorrow so I’ve scheduled the turbine company and security company to visit tomorrow to do the installations. We will be much safer once both of that is done.” Lucas nodded, “how will the security work?” The cheetah chuckled, “quite easily. Its a motion detector system. In other words it will warn us if somebody unauthorized comes onto the property and tell us where they are. Once that’s done then we won’t have to “pretend” anymore.” Lucas nodded, “will he have to be harsh while the crews are here?” Sebastian shook his head, “no the crews coming work for the underground. The truth is I’ll likely be the only one having any contact with them at all. Mark won’t have to do anything.”
Lucas nodded, “good because I don’t like him having to act that way. It takes too much out of him.” Sebastian nodded, “like I said Lucas had there been any other way I would have opted for it. However it was our only choice if we were to set up shop here.” Lucas nodded, “I totally get that. I just don’t want Mark to have to pretend to be something he’s not.” Lucas turned to see Foxy walking out of the bedroom. He smiled at the fox who walked up and hugged him, “Foxy how is Mark doing?” The fox sighed softly, “well I gave him something to help him sleep. He was distraught after the show he put on. He had to hit me and that really shook him. Overall I think he will be alright he just needs to sleep it off.” Lucas nodded, “thank you for being there for him.”
Foxy nodded, “of course I care for him. I’m glad you wasn’t there Lucas, it didn’t really bother me or Sebastian but I think you seeing him like that would have completely broken Mark.” Lucas nodded, “yeah that’s what Sebastian said. While true, I still can’t help wanting to be there for him.” Foxy nodded, “the best way you can do that right now is to be there for him when he wakes up and to make sure everything is running smoothly with the farm. The less he has to deal with right now the better.” Lucas nodded as the fox walked into the kitchen and got a cup of coffee.
Mark yawned as he opened his eyes slowly. He looked over at the clock and saw it was one in the afternoon. He sighed softly as he got up out of bed. He pulled on his underwear and walked into the livingroom. Sebastian smiled warmly at the human, “good afternoon. Can I make you some lunch.” Mark smiled, “I would like that thank you hun. Are you sure you and Foxy isn't mad at me?” Sebastian chuckled as he brought Mark a bowl of beef stew, “Mark I am proud of you. I have never been as proud of anyone as I am you. You did something completely against your nature for the benefit of others. There is nothing more noble than that. Foxy is not angry at you either he is also proud of you. He is simply worried about you as we all are.”
Mark nodded, “I’ll be alright hun. I feel much better now that I slept it off. Changing the subject, do you have any furs in mind for us to rescue?” The cheetah chuckled, “always thinking of others before yourself. Well yes I have a few in mind. There is a horse living on a farm a few hundred miles from here that the underground has been monitoring. He lives in horrible conditions often having to sleep outside. He is worked hard and beaten often. Then there’s a fox living at a brothel. Its a small operation and he’s the only fur there. I won’t even describe what he goes through, its too horrible to tell. Finally there’s a wolf. He lives in a home in the city. He sleeps in the basement on the floor. His master rapes and beats him constantly.”
Mark nodded, “how did you pick these out of all that need help?” The cheetah sighed softly, “sadly the need is far greater than what we can offer. Those were picked as candidates because of their circumstances, their lack of violence, and they have shown themselves to be sympathetic to our cause.” Mark nodded, “alright I assume we will have to purchase them. As distasteful as that is I doubt their owners will give them to us.” Sebastian nodded, “indeed we will. The grant money will be be receiving will more than cover their purchase. I have installers coming tomorrow to put in the turbine and the security system. If you give the green light, I can start the purchase process immediate. They can be delivered as soon as tomorrow.” Mark nodded, “what is your opinion? Do you suggest we rescue all three or one at a time?” Sebastian paused a moment, “the reality is we can’t really save all three of them at one time. There are just too many unknowns. Having three furs here who are angry and resentful could cause us problems. As difficult as this is to say I would pick one.”
Mark nodded, “well the question then is which one do we chose to save?” “Well, that’s a good question Mark. Honestly I’m not sure myself. Each of them need and deserve help,I would honestly have to say that I would go with the horse. We could use someone with his skill set. I would, however, consider taking a risk by also saving the fox.” Mark nodded, “why the fox and not the wolf?” Sebastian sighed softly, “well despite the conditions the wolf is dealing with I feel the fox is in more danger of losing his life. His master is harsh, and I fear if somebody doesn't step in soon he will be another death on the long list of those we have lost.” Mark nodded, “alright lets go ahead and pull the trigger on it. Get them both and lets take the risk.”
Mark hummed to himself as he walked to the barn. Foxy smiled at him as he walked through the door. “Good afternoon Mark are you feeling better?” Mark nodded, “much better. I still feel really guilty about hitting you though.” Foxy chuckled, “the only reason I fell was to make it look good. You hardly hit me enough to feel it and that’s the honest truth. After all the beatings I’ve taken it was nothing. I could tell you put no effort into it.” Mark nodded, “Foxy I love you I couldn’t hurt you if I had to.” Foxy smiled, “I know! That’s why I love you too. What bring you to the barn?” Mark smiled, “I’ve got some fans in storage. I thought I would run some wire and hook them up. I want to make this as comfortable as I possibly can.” Foxy smiled, “alright I’ll help you.”
Wolf yawned as he walked into the house. Blue, Sil, and Lucas had already gone ahead and knocked off for the evening. He stayed behind to finish chopping some wood. While they were in the dead of summer, fall and winter was on its way and he wanted to ensure they all had enough firewood to stay warm. He yawned again as he walked into the house. Sebastian smiled as he brought the wolf a plate of pot roast, roasted potatoes, and creamed corn. Wolf took a bite and smiled, “this is amazing Sebastian your a really great cook!” The cheetah chuckled, “I have good stuff to work with. It makes the finished product all that much better.” Wolf nodded, “where’s Mark?” Sebastian sipped a cup of coffee, “the last I saw he went to the barn. He’s been out there all afternoon with Fox.”
Lucas chuckled, “no doubt he’s still apologizing for hitting him.” Sil sighed softly, “I really wish there had been another way. Mark is a truly amazing person. I’m sure it hurt him much more than it did Foxy.” Sebastian nodded, “he was distraught after the inspector left. However, we passed so it all ended well.” Sil looked towards the back door as Foxy and Mark walked in. Foxy had a satisfied look on his muzzle and Mark was yawning. Lucas smiled, “well Foxy it looks as though you are quite content.” The fox nodded, “oh yes, Mark spent a lot of time apologizing. Had I known the apology would be that good I would have let him hit me a lot sooner.”
Mark blushed, “well I wanted to make sure you enjoyed yourself.” The fox grinned, “lets put it this way. I’m all sexed out.” Blue’s jaw dropped, “Mark you must tell me your secret. I’ve known this fox a long time and I’ve never heard those words before.” Mark grinned, “well you will just have to find out for yourself won’t you now.” Sil blushed as he sipped his soda. Mark grinned as he sat in Lucas’s lap. The canine smiled as he rubbed his humans chest. Sebastian sat looking around at the others talking and laughing. He had never imagined finding a place like this, a piece of heaven in the center of hell. This was his family now and he was determined to do whatever he had to in order to protect it.
