Of Wolf and Man: Chapter one
#1 of Of Wolf and Man
Jack's eyes opened slowly, blinking quickly at the bright lights of the lab as they shined down from the ceiling. He kept his eyes closed for a moment, trying to think and remember what had happened to him. Ever so slowly the sedation addled fog faded from his mind, letting him remember what had happened to get him into this lab.
He had been an engineer and a master at that, graduating top in his class and four years sooner than anyone would have dreamed. He had been working for the Umbrella Corp for a few years designing and creating armors and weapons, until the Corp died with the details of Raccoon flooding the news. He with the rest of the people at the facility he worked at only truly noticed the name and logo changing, since another large corporation bought most of Umbrella's assets. His work never ceased though as he worked with other great minds to create the first usable exoskeleton, and had just started working on armors and weaponry. He had grown used to working in the same facility as his brother Eric who was a very talented geneticist, though neither was allowed to talk to the other about their research.
Jack remembered the day he had sealed his own fate without knowing. He had been working very hard for a few months to work the last of the bugs from a shoulder mounted launcher, not knowing that had had been given live rockets. He had finished all of his diagnostics when the rocket pack fired two shots, being triggered by a short in the motherboard. He was knocked unconscious as the black tore a massive hole in the wall of his lab, sending large hunks of concrete into the adjoining hallway and killing two people. He found out later that it was one of the lead researchers and an executive, after finding himself strapped bare to a gurney. It wasn't long before he saw his paled brother walk into the room to greet him, and he had remembered that conversation well.
"Eric...what the hell is going on? I should be in jail...not strapped to a gurney!" Jack said as he watched his brother shoo off a few lab techs. He was thirty eight and had worked for the corporations a good deal of his life, but this was scaring him.
"Jack...the corporation is extremely harsh in it's punishments. They have already filed your accidental death with the authorities." Eric sighed as he looked down at his younger brother, sadness and pain covering his features. "I've been ordered to use you as a specimen for my work..." He trailed of for a moment as he looked away. "They have threatened to kill our family if I don't do this..."
Jack was mortified, though he knew that his brother had no say or choice. He looked around for a moment, before looking back at his brother. "It's ok Eric...I will trade my life for theirs any day..."
"I will do my best brother to keep you you. I refuse to truly turn you into what they want me to..."He whispered into his brother's ear. "Now sleep my brother...I pray you can forgive me for what I'm about to do..." Eric quickly moved to turn on the equipment, before injecting Jack with a powerful sedative.
Jack felt his body was very different, almost scared to know what had been done. He slowly sat up on the table, feeling IV's pull from his upper body as he moved. He gasped as he looked over his new body, finding a nice coat of brown and black fur covering him. He looked over his clawed paw-like hands and smiled some, having always loved the werewolf flicks. After slowly standing on his wolfin feet, he moved towards a mirror mounted on the wall near the bed. He looked over his new form carefully, finding himself to now stand just over seven foot tall if he didn't count his pointed wolfin ears. After a while he looked around to find a computer terminal still active, moving to it to find out how long he had been out. He sat down at the terminal and found that it was locked open for some reason. He almost fell out of the chair as he touched the keyboard, his brothers face filling the screen as a video played.
Eric sighed and puffed on a cigarette. "If you are watching this, then my hopes for you came true. I modified your DNA with that of a timberwolf's..." He sighed and put out the cigarette, before looking at the screen again. "The bastards had me use the T-Virus on you to do that though, but I was able to control it's effects somewhat with the anti-virus. You should still have your mind...I worked very hard to keep it that way." Eric looked away for a moment, seeming worried. "If you woke up when I think you should, you've been out for a year and three months. "Eric sighed and bowed his head down for a moment, before looking back at the screen. "You need to look over the news files attached to this video...they will tell you all you need to know. All I can tell you is that one of my assistants and a couple others working nearby have made off with almost a gallon of the virus." He looked almost ready to cry as he said this. "They have unleashed the virus in the city...the bastards paid some poor hick to spray the crap over half of the city..." Eric looked off screen again, his worry seeming to get worse. "When you see this...I will be dead my brother." He pulled his arm into view, showing a bite wound. "I've been infected and I refuse to become one of those mindless monsters..." Tears flowed down from the corners of his eyes as he spoke. "Please brother You must try to survive...the facility should be evacuated by now, and I know they would have to leave you behind. Especially since I changed the access codes to your birthday..." Eric groaned as pain shot through his body, knowing he would soon die. "Your lab is eleven floors up, you should find all you need up there to survive. I wish you well my brother..." The video feed ended a moment before it would have shown Eric shoot himself in the head.
Jack roared out in rage and pain as he moved away from the terminal, easily picking up the heavy gurney and launching it at the door. After the gurney crashed through the door he slowly started to calm himself, a tear rolling down his wolfin face. After looking back over at the terminal he sighed heavily as he fought the grief of knowing his brother was now dead. "Damn..." He felt his ear twitch as he talked, listening to how his voice sounded very deep and gruff now. He shook himself some as he moved back over to the terminal to watch the news videos his brother had logged into the system for him.
Jill Valentine stood looking out the third story window of an apartment complex, watching as the horde of undead roamed aimlessly through the city streets. It had been four days since the crop duster had sealed the fate of the city, trapping her on the opposite side of town. She had been checking up on Sherry Birkin for Claire, finding that the young girl had taken well enough to the loss of her parents. Luckily for the both of them they had slept in late the morning of the incident, while the commercial and mining districts of the city had been infected. Jill had gotten the help of fifteen year old Sherri to block the stairwells and kill the power to the elevators in the building, only to have the city black out the second night. Jill had luckily enough brought along her pistols and some clips just in case, finding that Sherri had kept a pump shotgun in her room since Raccoon. "We're lucky there's a main oil pipe line running under this city...or else it would be a replay of what happened with Raccoon." She said as she turned to look at Sherri, her eyes shooting to the girls blood covered hand.
Sherri cursed as she looked at the blood on her hand, having had some cramping the past two days. "Damn it!" She ran to the bathroom to clean up, returning a few moments later. "I've only got a few tampons left...that is one of the things I was gonna pick up..." She trailed off as she sat down on the couch, wishing that mother nature had picked a better time. She wore a black sleeveless sweater and black cargo jeans, finding undergarments trivial in their situation.
Jill moved over and sat beside Sherri, knowing the girl was much more worried now. "Shit happens...it just happens a lot to us." They both shared a light chuckled, knowing the horde would soon enough focus on the building with the scent of fresh blood inside. "Our barriers are good and strong...that mass of brainless wonders won't be able to get up here." She checked her radio again and sighed, hoping the government would send in teams for evacs. She wore a thick V-neck shirt and a pair of black cargo jeans
By early nightfall Jack had finished watching the videos and managed to get back to his lab, finding almost everything had been left behind during the evacuation. He had first scrounged through the armor cabinets trying to find something that would fit his much more bulky form, finding a heavily armored vest and pants. After getting dressed he found that the armor felt light to him, making him smile some as he started to try to find something that would fit his large paw-like feet. After a good while he managed to take a pair of armored combat boots, and modify them heavily so he could get them on without howling. "Now time for some weapons..." He looked around at the large assortment he knew was in the lab and the adjoining weapons lockers. He moved through the weapons lockers trying to pick out the best weapons for an outbreak, picking out some of the heavier ones.
It took only thirty minutes for Jack to pick out the best weapons he could find and use. An experimental Mini-gun, a Fully automatic shotgun that was drum fed, and two bull-pup style sub machine guns. He mutilated a pair of satchels and used them to holster the two bull-pups, before he decided to go and check out the garage knowing it was in sub-basement one.
After vaulting up the stair well like a movie monster he made his way into the garage, finding only two vehicles still there. One was a hauling van, and the other one was one of the Corp's anti-riot Rhino assault trucks that he knew very well. He walked up to the military truck and smiled, before he decided to check it over. After ten minutes he found the truck to be sound as a tank, finding they hadn't removed the cow catcher style barricade destroyer from the front. "That will come in handy with a street full of walking corpses and cars left all over the place...." He made sure the truck was full on fuel, before draining the water cannon's tank and filling it with a nice mix of fuels. He reworked the light the was on the cannon into an ignition for the turret, before he started to make trips back down to his lab for the guns. "Mine as well go for a ride...." He mused to himself as he ran down the stairs.
It didn't take more than another hour for him to bring up his choice weapons and a few assault rifles, along with ammo for them all. He shouldered the ammo pack for the Mini-gun and heaved it up into the armored troop bay, before he made another trip for water and MREs that he found tasting just as bad as before his change. He ventured one last time down to the lab he had woken up in, checking it over to find a case with an injector and some vials of anti-virus. "These may just come in handy...if I find anyone still breathing..." It didn't take him long to get back to the truck and get inside, strapping himself in as he cranked it. He triggered the doors and started his way up the tunnel that lead to the surface, making sure to trigger them to shut as soon as he made it outside. "Well time to start looking..." He trailed off as he pulled out into the street and started to plow his way towards the non crop dusted end of the city.
Sherri was on watch while Jill slept, having switched to her last tampon not but ten minutes ago. "Damn my luck..." She hefted her shotgun in her hands as she listened to the moans and groans of the walking rot bags as they moved closer to the building. The smell of her fresh blood having gotten to them now, she shivered at the thought. She looked out at the street for a few minutes, watching the horde gather around the apartment building. Her heart skipped a beat when she heard Jill's radio squawk something, turning to see Jill sitting up now shaking away her sleep. "What the?"
Jill sat up on the couch and grabbed her radio, turning it up some as she knew she had heard a voice. She cleared her throat and then clicked the transmit button. "Hello? This is Jill Valentine requesting assistance. Over"
Without pause the voice came back onto the radio. "Holy!" There was a short pause and the sound of a large motor revving up. "Nice to hear another voice. Jill how many are with you? And I need a location....over.
Jill looked up at Sherri and smiled as she watched the shotgun toting girl walk up to her. "We're at the Piney Grove apartment complex third floor. You don't know how glad I am to hear another human voice...I didn't expect rescue teams to be sent in so soon. What is your name soldier?"
The voice on the radio sighed heavily before speaking. "My name is Jack...I'm not part of a rescue team." Jack sighed heavily again, while the sounds of the large motor roared again. "And I'm not fully human...at least not anymore..."
Jill gawked at the radio some, before looking up to see Sherri's face twist in horror. She had heard about what had happened with Sherri's father, but never heard of a BOW being able to truly talk. "Shit!" She grabbed the radio and sighed, almost screaming as the voice came back over it.
"Listen! I used to be an engineer...I'm not some flesh eater. I'm only a half a mile away now...I have no plans on killing or eating you!" Jack knew his voice sounded almost desperate, cursing over the radio as he saw the horde outside the building. "Listen...I have a secure location I can take you to, just don't shoot my furry ass!"
Jill listened to what he said and sighed, not having much of a choice in the matter. She stood up and hugged Sherri for a moment trying to calm her, before hearing the large truck come closer. She moved over to look out the window, wincing some as she watched the Rhino military truck run over a portion of the crowd. "Where the hell did..." She trailed off as a moment later the bright flash of a mini-gun lit up the street more. She felt Sherri grip her arm tightly as they both watched the spitting image of a werewolf hop out of the back of the truck, laying out bursts of fire through the horde.
Sherri looked over the hulking form as it worked at clearing the street, noticing it looked unlike any of the BOW's she had seen or heard of. Her grip loosened on Jill as she saw the saddened look on it's wolfin features, feeling almost sorry for it now. "He's not like the others..." She said softly, making Jill jump beside her. "He looks sad...even my father looked rageful or mindless..."
Jill listened to Sherri as she watched the creature move back to the back of the truck, leaving the street a twitching mass of undead remains. She gawked as it popped up in the riot turret, only to see it canvas the street in flames. "He may look sad...but he's being thorough..." She watched him come back out of the truck toting a large shotgun instead of the Mini-gun, having cut off access to the surrounding streets with walls of fire. "Ok Fur Ball we are headed down to meet you....don't give me a reason to shoot you..." She said over the radio as she pulled out her pistols, hearing Sherri rack her shotgun.
Jack made his way to the stairwell, only having to blast seven or so rot bags on his way, before climbing around their first barricade. He started to undo the barricade when he turned just in time to dodge a leaping licker. He let loose a roar of rage as he spun around to but eight shells into the creature, covering the walls with gore. "Damn monsters..." He cursed as he heard the barricade above him being torn down. "All clear...a bit of blood and guts though..." He said loud enough for them to hear, before he turned and dismantled the barrier. After a moment he heard slow footsteps coming down the stairwell, looking up at the two as they stared down at him. "Nice to meet you..." He said before turning back to the first floor and blasting a rot bag's head off. "But to be honest....we need to leave." He moved for the first floor, checking that he still had over half a drum left on his shotgun.
Sherri and Jill moved to catch up to Jack, not wanting to get stuck too far behind him. They got close behind him as he moved out to the truck, helping him pick off the stragglers that had wandered too close. They paused at the back of the truck for a moment, before getting into the troop bay in silence.
After only a couple of minutes Jack was surprised to have Jill and the teenage girl strapped snugly into the troop bay, moving quickly to get into the driver's seat. "Hang on you two..." was the only warning he gave before the truck lurched forward, and on towards the facility he had woken up in. He heard them whispering to one another, twitching his ear some as he knew it was about him. "Oh...I almost forgot..." He grabbed the case with the anti-virus inside and shoved it back along to floor to the other two. "Both of you need to inject yourselves...I smell some fresh blood, so I'm guessing one of you is injured..." He trailed off as he heard the younger of the two babble out a large bit of very vulgar words, keeping his eyes on the streets as he wove through his own path.
Jill grabbed the case while Sherri cursed, opening it and letting out a light gasp. "How the hell did you find a case of anti-virus?" She quickly pulled out the injector and popped a vial into it, before jamming it into her arm and injecting herself. "Wow!....that never gets any more pleasant. Sherri hold still for a moment." She popped a fresh vial into the injector and waited for Sherri to hold still, before moving to inject it into her leg. She didn't have time to react as she heard Jack curse loudly and the truck swerve some to miss something, shoving her more towards Sherri. The injector missed Sherri's leg and slammed into the crotch of her pants, the injector's needles piercing her jeans easily before they speared into her fuzzy mound. The force of the act triggered the injector, turning Sherri's gasp of pain into nearly a scream as the anti-virus was pumped into her already sensitive mound.
Jack heard the scream and almost slammed on the breaks, keeping his attention on the road as he knew they were close to the facility now. He listened to Sherri's whimpers of pain as he heard Jill nearly go into a full panic, toggling the outer doors to the facility and quickly getting the truck down the tunnel before they closed. "What the hell happened?" He asked quickly as he finally managed to pull the truck into the garage area, making sure the heavy doors sealed behind them before he shut down the truck. He turned to face the two women and gawked as he watched Jill finally manage to get the injector from between Sherri's legs. The smell of blood became much worse, worrying him a lot more about the girl. "We need to get her down and get her checked over....now"
Jill was shocked to hear worry in the big wolf man's voice, looking just in time to see his large form move to her and Sherri. "I...I...I'm so sorry Sherri...the truck lurched and..." She was cut off as Jack moved close, unstrapping Sherri from her seat and moving to the door of the truck with her cradled in his arms. She watched as Sherri's head drooped on his shoulder as she passed out, not knowing what caused it worried her even more. "Where are you taking her?"
Jack carried Sherri in one arm, pulling out a bull-pup with his free hand, before making a quick check over the truck. He holstered in quickly after seeing now signs of undead, turning to Jill as the smell of blood flooded his wolfin nose. "We need to get her downstairs, that's where all the medical supplies are." He quickly moved to the stairwell, knowing Jill was hot on his heels as he moved. "We don't have tome to screw around..."
An hour later Jill sat outside of one of the medical bays near Jack's lab, waiting nervously as she didn't one hundred percent trust him yet. She had no choice in this though, because of her worry and nervousness, he had locked her out of the med bay. She sat in one of the chairs for a few more minutes, before the door unlocked and Jack crept out. At first glance she noticed he was no longer wearing the armored vest, and he reeked of alcohol and sanitizers. "Well? Is she going to be ok?" She asked as she tried to force her way past him, finding his large paw-like hand press against her stomach to stop her.
Jack smiled at her as she now glared up at his wolfin face, finally getting her to step back from the door so he could latch it. "She'll be fine...I patched her up easily." He sighed for a moment. "She's a lot better off than one assistant I had...poor bugger set off an experimental shotgun shell by accident. He nearly bled to death before we got him into the med bay." He looked down at her as she seemed to calm some. "My best guess is the injector filled that...area...and forced her body to expel the blood in that spot much more quickly."
Jill sighed lightly as her eyes looked up his muscled body to his wolfin face. "As long as she's alright, we're good." She thought for a moment. "So care to tell me how you ended up like this? I know for a fact that ninety nine percent of the BOW's ever seen, were mindless war machines. You on the other hand are caring and have a personality." She watched his expression sadden, before he turned and beckoned her to follow him.
Jack moved towards the break room beside his lab, Jill right behind his hulking form as he moved over to the fridge. He got out a couple bottles of water, handing one to her before he sat down at one of the tables. "I hope your not tired..." He sighed. "This is gonna take a bit to tell."
"I'm not tired at all...and take your time." She said as she sipped at her bottle of water, wanting to hear how this beast was once a man. She only had to wait a moment before he started to tell his long story to her, listening to every detail as it intrigued her.
