Chapter Nine
Gareth
"Bastard!"
"Claire, it was all a misunderstanding."
Great, Mr Tanaka didn't kill not-dad.
Gareth listened to his mum shouting at Arseny downstairs as he lay quietly fuming on his bed.
"You were in your study with his wife!"
"Nothing happened, trust me," not-dad insisted.
Ha!
"Nothing happened?" his mum replied. "What on earth was going on then? Imagine if Mr Tanaka had found you."
"I wanted her to stop, but she wouldn't," not-dad claimed. "They're gone now. I made sure they left the property."
"Left the property, like you personally escorted her away?"
Gareth wished he had the courage to walk down there and tell Arseny to fuck off, but it seemed his mother was doing a good enough job already.
"I made sure they both left, and neither of them were upset," not-dad said in an irritatingly calm tone. "Everything is safe and no one was hurt."
Apart from my mum.
"No one was hurt!"
"Yes, I don't know what Mrs Tanaka was doing, but trust me, I didn't want it. I'd rather have you. You are all I want."
He could imagine his mother silently but tearfully nodding.
"Is this true?"
"Yes, Claire. Look, I want to do all I can to make you believe this and to make up for what happened," not-dad insisted, putting on that infuriating tone again. "Why don't I take us out for dinner? I could book us a table at that Italian place over in Fildown."
"Okay."
"Just me and you, no one else around to bother us."
Not-dad was roping her back in, just as her previous boyfriends had, but they had been penniless losers. Arseny had money and a nice home. Gareth knew that it wasn't because his mum was shallow or only married for money, but given her precarious state in the past, non-dad seemingly gave her security.
The thought made Gareth decide that he was going to storm downstairs and tell Arseny to get lost once and for all.
He jumped up off the bed and flung the bedroom door open.
Arseny and his mum were already walking into the kitchen.
"Unfortunately I have to drive off over to my office over at the bottling plant," not-dad was saying. "But I promise I'll call the restaurant once I get there and we'll have a wonderful night out."
Gareth was taking the stairs two at a time, planning a lengthy monologue culminating in a satisfying fuck off.
He reached the kitchen door and saw to his disgust that not-dad had already made his way out the back.
Coward.
Mum was sitting at the kitchen table, looking at something on her phone, or at least pretending to.
"Hi mum," Gareth said softly.
"Oh, Gareth," mum replied, putting on a smile.
"Are you okay?"
His mum opened her mouth to answer, but she cocked an ear at the sound of not-dad's Bentley starting up. The tires crunched down the driveway before the sound of the car faded.
"I am," she said, continuing to smile.
"Mum, I know that smile, it's one you do when nothing is fine," Gareth explained.
His mum let out a sigh.
"Your father and I were having some issues, but we've sorted it." Gareth wanted to say he's not my father, but he held his tongue, knowing now was not the time. "Oh no, I'm supposed to be leaving for Fildown to have my fur groomed, and my appointment is in fifteen minutes."
His mum jumped up, seeming to forget the conflict that had just happened.
"Mum."
"I'll see you later sweetheart," she said, giving him a quick hug before rushing out of the room.
"Mum!" Gareth called, be she was already gone.
He sighed. This always happened, Arseny would cause problems, mum would run off and return as if nothing had happened. Repeat cycle.
She had done the same with her ex-boyfriends too, and her father. Gareth only had fleeting memories of his Grandpa; a grumpy old man who was almost hairless.
One day, Gareth had been sketching a drawing of the garden while Grandpa Gregory had been snoozing in a reclining chair (naturally Grandpa was included in the drawing as in Gareth's mind he'd inserted himself into the scenery). Grandpa had woken up, seen what Gareth was sketching before snatching the paper and tearing it up.
The memory still made Gareth wince several years later.
The opening bars of What Difference Does it Make? by The Smiths filled the kitchen which heralded an incoming call on Gareth's phone. He pulled it out to see Oliver's name displayed.
"Sup mate?" he said with a grin. "Any news on the plan?"
"Yeah, I'm up on the usual spot, near the tree. It looks like Frank is pulling up to their house. He's in a pickup truck he drives around for doing stuff, not his roadster."
"Interesting."
"So we'll wait until he goes before we try going in."
"Very wise," Gareth nodded.
"What's up at your end?"
"Just the usual Arseny bollocks," Gareth sighed. "Wait in the usual spot, I'll get my bike and some binoculars."
"I'll wait here. I swiped us a bottle of beer and some coke."
Gareth grinned as he hung up but his moment of mirth soon turned to a pang of sadness.
I need to escape this horrible place.
If his mum wouldn't do anything about not-dad and put up with his nonsense, Gareth decided that he would have to remove himself from the situation. University still seemed far off, even though it was just a couple of months, and going there didn't give Gareth any satisfaction. It would make Arseny feel like he'd rid his paws of an unwanted step-son rather than an escape.
Marcus and Ralph will take me away, I want to escape to them.
Gareth wondered if they'd hire him as a personal assistant and he grinned at the thought.
I'd be like not-dad's PA or when I help out with his community projects, but cooler and with two sexy guys who'll like me. I'll take all their calls, answer their emails, and then they'll be so impressed they'll ask me to join them.
Gareth closed his eyes as he imagined him stepping into a Lear Jet owned by Ralph and Marcus.
"Thank you for carrying our suitcases Gareth, you're a good husky."
"You're welcome Ralph, I love working for you."
"And you've been great at packing everything, why not come and sit with us? Don't worry yourself about working here. The cabin crew will do it. Come and sit on my lap and sip champagne with me."
"Thanks Marcus, I'd love to."
Gareth began smiling as he pictured himself settling into a leather plane seat between them, their paws began making their way up his thighs.
Buzzzzz!
He sighed as the fantasy was brought to an end by his phone vibrating.
Duuuude, hurry. The coke is getting warm.
"Urgh, Oliver, don't ruin my daydreams," he sighed, before running the list through his head again; binoculars and then his bike.
His binoculars were still in his desk drawer and Gareth wagged his tail as he grabbed them.
Thankfully, his bicycle was leaning against the wall in the same spot. He slung the binoculars around his neck and began peddling down the driveway.
It was another hot day and Gareth arrived at the usual spot panting and with his shirt sticking to his chest.
Oliver was under the tree sipping from a bottle of beer.
"Have I missed anything?" Gareth asked.
Oliver didn't respond with words. Instead the Border Collie grinned and pointed down at Marcus' garden.
Gareth turned to look at his mouth fell open.
Marcus was sunbathing in a speedo while Ralph was exercising on his mat.
"Fucking hell," Gareth breathed. "Why did I not get here earlier?"
Before Oliver could respond, Gareth hooked an arm over a low hanging but thick branch of the oak tree and hauled himself up.
"Where are you going?" Oliver asked.
"I'm getting a better look," Gareth replied as he kept climbing.
He and Oliver had climbed the tree before, and Gareth knew where the sturdy branches were. There was a nice, thick branch that gave him a good place to sit and it stuck out, giving him a better view of the garden.
"So tell me about this Arseny drama?" Oliver asked as Gareth put the binoculars to his eyes.
"He was perving on the wife of a business client," Gareth explained as he focused the vision until it became crystal clear. "Damn, the sun is shining on me. Anyway he was kissing her and almost touching her boobs."
"You got two porn shows in one day!"
"The second one wasn't hot. It had not-dad in it! I don't know what my mum sees in him, or what the Akita saw in him for that matter, not-dad is plump and not a looker," Gareth sighed. "Straight people are weird."
"Don't gay guys like fat people too?"
"Shush," Gareth replied. "I want to enjoy this and put not-dad out of my mind."
This show was certainly better. Gareth found himself licking his lips. The sight of Ralph's butt flexing as he exercised was even more obvious.
"Mmm, fuck I want to get a pair of swim trunks just like that," Gareth said, feeling transfixed by the sight. "Just imagine Ralph and Marcus seeing my bum in them. I'll flex and they won't be able to resist."
"Um, no offense, but he's a muscly action star, you're not," Oliver said from below.
Gareth ignored him and continued watching. Ralph had stood up and was straddling over Marcus.
Oh god, yes, please do something sexy again!
He was aware he was panting with his tongue hanging out, but that was nothing to do with the fact it was hot outside. Ralph seemed to talk to Marcus as his butt flexed, but then the Doberman stood and made his way back to his mat.
"Damn," Gareth sighed.
"What is it?" Oliver asked.
Gareth temporarily tore himself away from the binoculars to glance down at Oliver. The Border Collie was leaning against the trunk of the tree and texting someone while sipping his beer.
"No hot sex," Gareth explained.
"You look like someone who is stalking their ex," Oliver grinned. "Like in films when they hide in a tree. Keep doing it though, I have no interest in men but I'm finding this and the Arseny stuff hilarious."
Gareth ignored the last comment as he went back to watching through the binoculars.
Marcus had stood up and was making his down the garden. Frank had appeared and was watching from the back door.
"Why has Frank got to be there," Gareth grumbled. "I flirted with him first, and I've had a crush on Marcus and Ralph since last Christmas, I should have had them before Frank. Why am I not in the garden?"
"Because you're not famous?"
"Frank isn't famous either," Gareth interjected. "He's just some guy!"
"He fixes and makes things," Oliver pointed out. "Perhaps he went around to fix their plumbing and they decided to make a porn film together."
"I should have been in it!" Gareth snapped before turning back to watch what was going on.
Marcus was now standing by the shed and Frank was sprinting down the garden. Ralph sat up and looked confused as the wolf sped by.
As Gareth watched opened mouthed, Frank picked up Marcus and threw him out of the way as the shed fell down.
"Shit!"
"What is it?" Oliver asked.
"Marcus almost died, and Frank just saved his life."
This was followed by the sound of Oliver climbing the tree.
"Finally, something more interesting than gay stuff," he grinned as he shuffled along the branch.
They watched as Marcus, Frank and Ralph headed back towards the house. One by one, they went inside and the back door was closed.
"That was badass," Gareth grinned. "The shed almost fell on him, and Frank came rushing along."
"I can guess what happened by the fact the shed is in bits."
"Looks like Frank is leaving too," Gareth added, pointing to the front of the house.
A red pickup truck was parked at the front and Gareth watched as the black wolf made his way out of the front door, climbed in and drove away.
Ralph's white Lotus was still outside.
"Hmm, I wonder what Ralph is up to?" Oliver mused.
"Probably screwing Marcus," Gareth sighed wistfully. "Soon, I'll be there and they'll get me out of here."
"You really think they'll get you out of here?"
"Yes, even if it's as far as their cottage here," Gareth continued. "The place needs fixing up, and I'll help them."
He allowed the binoculars to hang around his neck as he retreated into his imagination.
"That was a wonderful idea to build a hot tub in the garden Gareth, aren't you a clever husky."
"Thanks Ralph, I try."
"I got you a sexy swimsuit, like Ralph's. Why not join us for a quick dip?"
"I'd love to Marcus, and thank you."
"Ya know, why don't we all just sit in the hot tub naked together?"
"I like this idea!"
"Earth to Gareth!"
"You idiot, you ruined my fantasy," Gareth sighed.
"I was asking which one of them would take your virginity," Oliver grinned.
"Hmm, that would be Ralph as he's my number one crush, but I love Marcus so he can have sloppy seconds," Gareth said. "After they'll both take turns on me in a threesome."
"Mate, I don't need to know!"
"Hey, you ask these questions and then get annoyed when I answer them."
"Yeah, but you could just say Ralph," Oliver sighed. "None of this sloppy second's nonsense, eww."
"You should be gay, then you'd understand."
"You should be straight, and then you can understand why I want to shag Jennifer Lopez."
"Well, if she comes to Little Hartbrook I'll drink beer under the tree while you spy on her," Gareth responded with an eye-roll.
"Deal."
Gareth kept watching the house, but everything seemed quiet. He reached into his pocket and pulled his phone out to check the time.
"Did you bring the drinks up the tree?" he asked.
"Yup, I finished the beer, but here's some coke."
Gareth reached out as Oliver handed him the bottle. He took a swig but the liquid had turned warm and syrupy.
"Urgh, yeah you're right it had gotten hot," he coughed.
"Suit yourself," Oliver said as he turned back to his phone. Gareth decided to look at Instagram. He opened up a page he had looked at before; it was a selection of photos by a cute looking grey Elkhound. "Whatcha looking at?"
"Gunnar Andersson's Instagram."
"Who?"
"Ralph's ex, he's a Swedish model and he's quite cute," Gareth explained. "I'm sizing up what Ralph might be into."
"But he might not be into Gunnar if he's his ex."
"True," Gareth reasoned.
He sighed as his mind began to drift back to the hot tub fantasy.
"That's it Gareth, come and sit between us. There's a good husky."
"I'd love to do that Ralph. Um, I've been wanting to ask this for a long time. Will you take my virginity?"
"Heh, no need to be shy. Of course I will, you're a cute and handsome guy."
Gareth smiled as Ralph put a paw under his muzzle and leaned in for a kiss...
"Ouch!" Gareth exclaimed as the fantasy was abruptly ended. "Do you have to poke me like that?"
"Only to get your attention when something is happening," Oliver grinned. "I think Marcus and Ralph are leaving."
Gareth followed Oliver's paw and put the binoculars back to his eyes.
The fox and Doberman were indeed walking out to the white Lotus. As he watched, they climbed in, the engine fired up (the noise echoed up the hillside) and they sped off.
"You know what this is a golden opportunity for," Oliver grinned.
Gareth didn't need to answer. He knew what the Collie meant.
The two teenagers scampered down the slope to where Gareth had left his bike before hurrying down the trail (pausing only so Oliver could throw the coke and beer bottles over the hedge into his parents' garden).
"I'll find them later," he explained to an amused Gareth.
They hurried around the corner, passing Oliver's parents' house. There was no sign of life thankfully, and then to the lane where Honeysuckle Lodge sat.
The Lotus was still gone and the lane was deserted.
"Hide your bike, just in case," Oliver instructed. "Behind that bush!"
Gareth parked his bike behind the leylandii that was growing over the wall and Oliver beckoned him back. The Collie moved to open the gate and Gareth suddenly felt apprehensive.
"Is this a good idea?" he whispered.
"What do you mean?" Oliver replied. "No one is around."
"I know, I mean what are we doing exactly? This is illegal, and Marcus and Ralph aren't here."
Oliver thought for a second before snapping his paws.
"We'll learn more about their tastes, and that'll help you talk and bond with them," Oliver grinned. "I'm helping you get a head start."
That clinched it.
Gareth snuck behind Oliver as they crept up the garden path. It was starting to grow dim outside, but none of the lights behind the windows came on, seemingly confirming that no one was in the house.
"I think he left it here," Oliver said, reaching behind the window box. "Bingo!" he whispered triumphantly pulled the key out and showed Gareth.
Gareth could feel his heart pounding in his chest as Oliver unlocked the door and gently eased it open.
"I'm not sure I want to do this."
"Come on, don't you want to see where they live?"
"Um, okay."
"After you."
Gareth hurried over the threshold, not wanting to be caught by anyone outside. He sniffed about nervously. The scent of fox and expensive aftershave hung in the air, but there was no sound of anyone moving about.
He had imagined that Marcus and Ralph would live in a modern, luxury house. The inside of this cottage seemed a bit old people. There were paint samples on the walls, old paintings hanging up and wallpaper that reminded him of his Grandma's house.
"This isn't what I imagined," he said. "It's very old fashioned."
"He's doing the place up though, remember," Oliver explained.
Gareth crept nervously along the hallway and into the kitchen.
"Wow," he breathed, noticing multiple bottles of wine stacked along the counters.
Then he noticed a black tank top draped over one of the kitchen chairs. He picked it up and sniffed it. It smelled of the expensive aftershave that hung wonderfully in the air. There was also a box on the table with the lid half off. Gareth glanced inside and saw it contained some very fat looking Cuban cigars.
"Gareth, look!" Oliver exclaimed as he opened the fridge.
"What is it?"
"Caviar from Russia, whole tubs of it," the Collie explained. "And French cheeses, really nice looking cuts of meat."
Gareth walked over to look. The fridge was indeed stuffed.
"Nice," Gareth grinned, feeling his nerves subside.
"Wanna try some?"
"Is that a good idea?"
"Yes, it must cost a lot," Oliver said. "I think this one is open."
Before Gareth could say anything, Oliver had pulled the tub down and prized the lid off. Gareth knew Arseny liked caviar, but he had never seen it up close, only in movies. The tub contained what looked like little black balls.
"How do you eat it?"
"Um, like this I guess," Oliver said, scooping some out in his paw.
"You're a nutter," Gareth sighed as the Collie licked it from his paw-pads. "How does it taste?"
Oliver didn't reply and instead pulled a funny face as he ate.
"Really salty, and expensive, or what I imagine expensive tastes like. You try some," he added, thrusting the tub at Gareth.
Gareth gingerly scooped some out and tasted it. It did indeed taste salty.
"Let's look upstairs," Oliver said, putting the tub back and closing the fridge.
"Okay," Gareth replied nervously.
It was starting to get gloomy, but the two canines crept up the stairs. The door to the main bedroom was open and Gareth tiptoed inside.
"Why are you doing that, no one is here," Oliver laughed.
"I don't know," Gareth shrugged.
It then dawned on him that he was in Ralph and Marcus' bedroom.
I'm in the bedroom of my number one and two crushes!
He glanced around, feeling his heart beating. The bed was a little messy and there were clothes on the floor. A jar of Moulton & Sixsmith Organic Fur Cream sat on the dresser next to a bottle of Armani aftershave.
Although Gareth's mind knew the idea was insane, he wanted to try some on. He walked over and gently pulled the lid of the cream. It smelled divine and he applied some to his arm.
"Gosh, that feels and smells amazing," he said, sniffing himself.
"Try some aftershave on," Oliver grinned, picking the bottle up.
"Wait, no, haha!" Gareth laughed as Oliver squirted him with it. "How do I smell?"
"Kinda pungent now," Oliver chuckled.
Gareth grinned as he put the cream down and sniffed about the room. His foot brushed against something and he looked down. It was a pink tank top with the words Don't Block Cock written across the front. A pair of underwear lay next to them, blue Calvin Klein briefs.
He picked the underwear up. Judging by the size they had to be Ralph's. Gareth smiled as he thumbed the silky material before pressing them to his snoot and sniffing deeply.
"That's fucking weird," he heard Oliver say, but he didn't care.
He kept nosing the fabric, drinking in the wonderfully manly scent.
"I want to wear these myself," he sighed dreamily.
"We have to go, like right now," Oliver gasped.
Gareth was pulled back to reality and glanced over to see the Collie gazing in alarm out of the window, and then he heard the sound of a powerful engine draw up.
"Out the back," Gareth whispered, stuffing the briefs up his shirt.
He hurried out of the room and down the stairs with Oliver in tow. They reached the kitchen door and almost crashed into it as Gareth struggled to open it.
"Is it locked?"
"Just stiff," Gareth whispered as he twisted the handle.
The door opened and they hurried outside and hid under the kitchen window.
As soon as they were outside Gareth heard the sound of the front door open. The kitchen light flicked on.
"I can't believe we both forgot our wallets," he heard someone laugh.
"At least we didn't get to the restaurant," a deep voice replied.
Oh my god, that's Ralph!
"Found yours?"
"Yeah."
"Let's go."
The front door opened and closed. Gareth exhaled deeply and he could feel himself quivering.
Oliver stood and peered through the door.
"I think they're gone," he said before turning to Gareth with a grin. "Want to do that again?"
Gareth's heart was beating, but he could feel Ralph's underwear safely bundled in his shirt. He pressed them to his heart and an idiot grin spread across his muzzle.
