Jaybird, P5
Jaybird is a short crime/drama themed story about two wolves in a dirty world.
This story is heavily based off a roleplay between myself and a friend.
With his permission I was allowed to use the roleplay material as a basis to practice writing further, as it is a hobby I intend to try and maintain moving forward.
Please enjoy!
Morning comes and Jay wakes with a horribly dry throat. He gags a bit as he rolls over in bed and tries swallowing. Sore eyes wink open and glance around the room. Jay had no idea where he was… but judging by the familiar decor it must still be within the mansion.
“Ugh… shit…” He groaned, slowly feeling around the bed to try and find his phone.
He discovers that he is still fully clothed and his phone is still in his pocket. Lazily his paw drags the device up to his face, one eye shut and the other squints at the bright screen as he works the phone with one hand.
Thirteen missed calls, Bucher.
Jay grits his teeth anxiously, and punches in a quick text to Anderrick, asking where he is.
The text is immediately marked as read. Jay laid there waiting for a response, instead the door opens and Anderrick walks in, throwing a bottle of blue liquid to the foot of the bed. Jay raised his head to see that it was a generic sports drink.
“I’m sorry…” Jay croaked.
“Eh, ain’t like I’ve never been high before. Not about to judge. You good though? Remember anything?”
“Yeah… no… I just dreamed weird shit all night and kept hearing hyenas laughing. What happened?”
“You had fun, it sounds like. I had to carry you back here though. You couldn’t walk, and kept rambling about not being a fag.”
“Oh…” Jay fell back into the bed and pulled the blanket up over his face, groaning.
“We got paid.” Anderrick said, changing the subject as he noted Jay’s discomfort.
Jay perked up a little, sitting up and grabbed for the bottle. He threw his head back and took several big gulps. Half of the bottle was gone within moments, and Jay gasped softly as his throat felt much better now.
Both wolves perk their ears and turn to see Jay’s phone started to vibrate.
Bucher is calling.
Jay exhaled a slow sigh, then picks up the phone and raises it to his ear. “Hello?”
The younger male winced a little. Anderrick couldn’t hear what was being said but he heard enough to understand whoever it was, was pissed.
Jay hardly got any words in, he seemed to try and protest some points being made before the line disconnected.
“I need to go see Bucher.”
“Why? He’s not your boss any more.”
“He just didn’t know where I was and is pissed that I still have one of his cars. I’ll just go return it, then I don’t have to deal with him anymore, right?” Jay said, giving a hopeful smile up to Anderrick.
“I’ll come along, it’s a bit of a drive after all.” Anderrick stated, before leaving the room.
Jay felt dejected as his question was disregarded. He really did not want to work with Bucher anymore, and was hopeful of this position at Anderrick’s side.
Maybe Anderrick isn’t so keen of Mr. Vower’s decision?
Within the hour, Jay and Anderrick were back on the road.
Jay was in the driver’s seat again. An hour and some time later, Jay and Anderrick were back in the dirty, trash-ridden part of town.
Parked on the side of the road, the two slipped out of the car and proceeded up a short flight of stairs into an apartment complex. Jay was leading the way, however the second he was in through the front door the small male was launched by another into a wall.
Jay was pinned by the throat, Mutt was staring him down baring teeth. The dog’s eyes were dilated, it seems he was on something, his fingers sporadically twitching.
Anderrick stood by the door and watched calmly, once realizing Mutt wasn’t letting up, he barked out. Mutt’s ears perked and the male let go of Jay, turning to see Anderrick towering above him. Mutt paced briefly on the spot, then rubbed his arm across his snout and walked off.
Anderrick eyed the kid as he wandered off. Once Mutt was out of sight Anderrick turned to Jay. “What was that about?”
Jay was rubbing his throat slightly. “Ahh… D-don’t worry it’s always like that around here.”
A paw still rubbing his neck slightly, Jay leads Anderrick down a hall. Not only was the place filthy but some doors were missing entirely, windows cracked or gone, and boarded up. No wonder Jay doesn’t want to come back to this.
They proceeded up some stairs, getting eyed by some twitchy people along the way. They went up several floors, then down another long hall and took a right to meet two large dogs. Anderrick was still taller, but these two were thicker. Not necessarily muscular even, just larger and fatter. Jay smiled to them, and they stepped aside while one points to an open door.
The two wolves enter the room and meet a male tiger wearing a white sleeveless top. He stood from a couch and smiled to the two, his eyes dilating in a predatory manner.
“Jay! It’s so good to see you again.”
Something was off, and it wasn’t just Anderrick that noticed this. Jay seemed briefly surprised by the friendliness expressed by the tiger, who gestured them both to sit on the couch opposite.
The tiger’s fingers tapped along a glass table between both couches, a few pills piled next to a bag of cocaine.
“Bucher, I presume?” Anderrick said, nodding his head politely to the tiger.
The two dogs from the hallway entered the room and shut the door, Anderrick had an ear on them as he sat with Jay.
“Everything okay, boss?” Asked Jay.
The tiger was fidgeting with a knife now, neither of the wolves saw where it came from.
“So! Mr. Vower calls me, asks me to send some guys to pick you up.” His eyes turned from Jay to Anderrick, he seemed to struggle to sit still as he fidgets and makes wild gestures with the knife as he spoke, “I just… how can he just slide that much money under my nose, and not give me a cut? Huh?”
Anderrick nods his head. “No one has been paid yet. Not you, not us, not Mr. Vower. You will get your cut when it comes.”
The tiger paused and smiled. “No, I was gunna get it sooner and I was gunna get it all!”
Bucher points an accusing finger at Anderrick. “You! You shot my damn friends!”
That knife was stabbed forward into the glass, sending a web of cracks through the coffee table.
The two dogs stepped forward, one held a stubby shotgun and the other a pistol. “Then my friends put a bounty on your head- and this is the best part! I was gunna ask Jay to arrange a meeting between you and I, but he brought you straight fucking here!” The tiger’s maw opened in a big, twisted grin.
Jay’s face was red, the guy was frozen in fear as he stared at Bucher. Anderrick could almost feel that little heart thumping in Jay’s chest.
“And what do you think will happen when you kill me? Doesn’t sound like there is much forethought into this plan. Not only that, you’re going to kill me on camera?” Anderrick’s snout nodded up to a corner of the room.
“The fuck you on?” Bucher, the dogs and Jay all looked up curiously and in that brief window of time Anderrick threw himself, and Jay back; flipping the couch and successfully falling out of sight.
The dogs raised their guns and aimed at the couch, ready to riddle it full of holes. Bucher jumped beside the two guards. “That couch ain’t gunna stop shit.”
Jay was in a fetal position on the floor, paws cupped over his ears and eyes shut. Anderrick had an arm over the younger male, his other hand holding his own handgun.
“Kid I don’t know how much I can do with this bad shoulder.”
Jay raised a hand above the couch suddenly, both dogs trained their guns on it. “W-wait!”
Anderrick looked to Jay with confusion, shaking his head as his expression alone was discouraging Jay to stop whatever he was thinking. Jay seemed to avoid eye contact as he slowly stood. “I-I’m on your side! Wait, please!”
Anderrick’s ears would fold back as he watched Jay stand and slowly walk out from behind the couch. The young wolf holding both hands up in surrender.
Jay is abandoning me? Anderrick thought, understanding the boy is probably scared out of his mind. Could he really be blamed for trying to cover his own ass?
The tiger watched with a menacing smile. “Ah, so you do have some brains in that gay fucking head of yours, huh?”
Jay proceeded with his head bowed, staring at the floor as he walked up beside the other three. The dogs took their eyes off Jay and looked back to the couch with blood-thirsty grins.
Anderrick’s ears flatten back against his skull, his grip tensing around that pistol before suddenly several gunshots ring off, the wolf flattening himself down against the floor.
A silent moment passed before Anderrick dared to raise his head and peer over the couch.
Jay was standing there with the pistol gifted to him by Anderrick held in both paws, aimed over the three lifeless bodies of Bucher and his guards. Jay was panting lightly, wide eyed, chest heaving with each breath.
Anderrick stood out from behind the couch, looking over Jay. “Why did you do that!?” Jay just slowly turned his head and looked up to the larger male, who took the gun from Jay’s shaky paws in one swift move.
“Come on, we need to go.” Anderrick pushed the small one toward the door, Jay stumbled slightly; his legs were rather weak, and he felt light-headed.
As they stepped into the hall, various voices could be heard shouting as gang members rushed up the stairs or out of their rooms.
“Stay behind me.”
Anderrick moved toward the staircase and immediately took advantage of the position, firing shots downwards before descending. Each floor they went down, Anderrick methodically took cover, shot, checked, and then proceeded. Jay seemed to be about as capable of following as he was the previous night; tripping over bodies, slipping on blood and at one point the young wolf fell on his ass, only to be brought back up by a strong paw.
Jay was certain along the way he saw a familiar young tiger, and even Mutt amongst the fallen. Anderrick just worked his way through the people as though they were mere obstacles, and his gun the perfect key to move past them. Jay finally saw the man at the peak of his ability, and was slightly terrified by the robotic, cold, and calculative precision displayed while he himself was flinching and whining at every gun shot whether it was from Anderrick or the various junkies coming for them.
Once they reached the base of the stairs Jay felt a sharp sting at his side, he clamped a paw over it. Blood was beginning to pour through his fur. His other hand gripped Anderrick’s coat, and he gasped meekly. Anderrick didn’t look back, he just moved on with Jay clinging to him.
Within moments they were outside in an alley, Anderrick looked the place up and down before turning to Jay and seeing the blood. There was no change in his facial expression, as he effortlessly collected Jay over his shoulder and made a straight run for the car.
Jay was thrown into the back seat, and Anderrick drove off.
“Where are you hit?”
Jay was panting, slowly raising his shirt to find a gash across his side. Anderrick briefly glanced back. “Is it bad?”
A slow shake of the head was all Jay could muster as his head fell back. “...fucking hurts…” He whined. Putting his paw over it again. Thankfully it wasn’t a direct hit, but it was the first bullet wound Jay’s ever suffered, and it stung like hell.
“You’re doing good,” Anderrick said reassuringly while he calmly works his way through traffic.
