Jaybird is a short crime/drama themed story about two wolves in a dirty world.

This story is heavily based off a roleplay between myself and a friend.

With his permission I was allowed to use the roleplay material as a basis to practice writing further, as it is a hobby I intend to try and maintain moving forward.

Please enjoy!

Anderrick had taken Jay back to that motel room from the first night. Jay was carried in, and dropped on the bed. A knife was pulled out and used to cut Jay's shirt off. Anderrick proceeded to clean, and then patch the wound up.

Jay was whining and huffing during the whole process, especially when straight alcohol was poured over the gash. He was doing his best to remain still, thankfully Anderrick decided it didn't need stitching.

Once it was all done, Anderrick left Jay to rest. The young male laid there for mere minutes before trying to get up. His movement catches the grey wolf's eye. “How are you feeling?"

Jay grit his teeth, pain shooting through his side as he slowly sat up. The bandage wrapped around his waist was tight.

“I'm fine… I… I'm sorry, I fucked up - but they were going to shoot you!"

“I was prepared for that. They could have shot you, and even though they didn't you've now done something that you can't ever come back from."

“Are we fucked?" Jay asked, ears folded back as he stared directly toward Anderrick.

“No… I don't think so, but that doesn't matter right now. I'm more worried about you. I didn't want this for you."

Jay was quiet as he absorbed those words, before exhaling a slow breath.

“What do you mean?"

“It's one thing to be in a gang, but it's another to kill. I didn't want you becoming like me. I'm thankful it worked out, but shit… you had a chance to get out of this life still."

Jay was silent again, thinking over those words before shutting his eyes as they glazed over, a single tear running down his cheek.

“You'll get through this."

“Sir, i-if I may…" Jay wipes a wrist over his eyes.

“Hmm?"

“I didn't shoot them because I wanted to live." He exhaled sharply, eyes looking to the wolf with such a sharp gaze, one of purpose and sincerity.

Anderrick hasn't seen this of Jay before, nor heard that tone.

“I shot them because I didn't want to live without you." His eyes slowly turned downwards as he realized how stupid that sounded out loud. Jay's ears were flat against his skull as Anderrick stared blankly.

“That's… I don't know what to say to that… I'm not the type of person you want to get attached to, damn it." Anderrick dropped his face into his hands and rubs over his forehead and brow.

“Yeah, I know. I know you probably don't care about me either, but I… I didn't really have a reason to live, not 'til you…"

“I do care." Anderrick's head perked up and he looked toward Jay, he stammered briefly trying to find the right words before just swearing under his breath. The big wolf stood and suddenly moved up towards Jay. The younger male was immediately intimidated, raising his hands in a defensive manner.

Instead… Jay is grasped by the wrists, his tense body pulled forward and his lips pressed against the larger muzzle. His eyes shot open, pupils dilating as their maws pressed together.

A light squeak was all Jay could muster in response to this. He couldn't blink, or move and his face turned a bright red.

The kiss didn't last long, a mere second. To Jay it felt like minutes, and his heart felt like it was doing gymnastics off his ribs. When the kiss was broken Anderrick leaned back and smiled, but the smile faded really fast. “I'm not going to make a very good partner…"

“W-what?" Jay asked, he started blinking a little erratically. “Are w-we actually talking about this right now?"

“I don't know." Anderrick raised his hands to rub over his face again. “I need to think about other things right now."

The maned wolf had grown very warm, starting to pant very lightly as he sat there. His legs were weak, and if he would try standing he might just fall over.

“I need to make a few calls. You need to come to terms with this." Anderrick said, standing to go to the bathroom with his phone, already dialing.

“C-come to terms with what?"

“Shooting people."

Jay would be left alone in the room, looking down to his toes. He quickly realizes he's been holding his breath and makes a big exhale before flopping his body backwards into the bed.

He shut his eyes, he thought about what Anderrick said, visualizing the tiger's big, stupid, surprised face as Jay pulled the gun out. That expression brought Jay brief amusement, then he felt that sharp sting in his heart while watching someone's life just fade away.

That pain faded with the image of the tiger dying, and Jay then experienced relief. Maybe Anderrick is right, and killing isn't something easy and fun but this time it was for the best… Jay was glad he never has to work with that tiger again.

The train of thought is interrupted as the bathroom door opens and Anderrick steps out. “We're fine. The leadership expected a rat somewhere, though I still think we ought to lay low for awhile… I need to clear my head, I'm going to take a shower."

Jay sat up slowly and nodded his head. “Yes sir."

“You should try to relax for now. It's a small wound but if you keep moving it'll never heal."

Anderrick took off his coat and left his phone on the kitchen table as he went back into the bathroom. Jay hears the shower run, and takes in the sound like whitenoise, once again closing his eyes and laying back.

A good half-hour passed before Jay hears the shower turn off. Anderrick stepped out in just briefs, walking over to his bed confidently.

The younger male blinked a little, watching with a little smile forming. Anderrick sat down, and looked over Jay thoughtfully. “What am I going to do with you?"

Jay's face flushed red again, giving a slight shrug.

The rest of the evening, both men seemed a bit shy. Only talking a little, and exchanging warm smiles. Besides that, and Jay being the one needing to heal; it was much like last time; Anderrick did all the grocery shopping and Jay stayed back in the motel.

The next day Anderrick seemed a bit more talkative, asking various questions.

“So it struck me I don't really know anything about you."

“What do you want to know?"

“Things like… your last name, where and how you grew up?"

“Burde." It was pronounced like bird. Jay explained he was sometimes called Birdy, but a less insulting nickname he had was Jaybird. He also went on to tell Anderrick he never really been outside of the country, and rarely left the State. During this conversation Anderrick would unwrap, and clean Jay's wound. Jay sometimes winced, or whined but overall remained very still, and continued talking. Once the new wrap was secured around Jay's waist, he turned to look directly into Anderrick's eyes. “Hey…"

“What?"

“Sorry for causing you all this trouble…"

“Trust me, I've been in worse shit than this. I'm more concerned of your… feelings." That last word seemed to be a struggle to get past his lips.

“I mean, I've done a pretty good job at masking how I feel, did you know I was gay?"

Jay nervously blinked and shook his head, blushing bright and perking his ears. “N-no, shit no. I don't… even know what I am." He croaked, “Are you… serious about all this?" He asked sincerely, eyes growing wet again.

“I don't know. I mean, I like you, but I have never done relationships beyond one night stands and casual hook-ups. We will see where this goes."

Jay shyly gulped and nodded his head. “I will not get in your way, I promise."

Anderrick smirked and put a hand over Jay's shoulder.

“Have you ever been in a relationship before, let alone with a guy?"

Jay made an awkward smile, his only response.

“So you're a virgin. Was that your first kiss last night?"

Jay shook his head, his cheeks and snout holding a bright shade of red as he struggles to maintain eye contact, feeling very self conscious.

“Okay then… well… um, you should probably come to terms with who you are. You're gay, or bi, whatever, welcome to the club. Don't let it interfere with work and don't go around flaunting it or you'll piss people off. I don't know any rule against it, but I've gone with the safe option of don't ask; don't tell."

Jay was enthusiastically nodding his head. “Don't worry about me! No one will know about me, or us!" He said confidently.

“Good, alright. I'll get us dinner, then we'll need to pack up and head back to Mr. Vower's place." The wolf said, standing and gathering his things.

Anderrick was stepping out the front door before suddenly popping his head back in. “Have you at least watched porn?"

Jay flinched when Anderrick appeared leaning back into the room from outside, he gave off an embarrassed whine and grabs a pillow, “Yes!" He replied, while making an overarm throw, launching the pillow at the door.

Anderrick shut the door before the pillow hit, Jay caught a brief glimpse of a smile on the big guy's face.
