The 'Eve'ning shift - Chapter 3

Eve stretched, getting up from her napping spot on the couch. She knew that if she didn't take a nap she would not make it through her shift tonight. She had to shake off her own insecurities so she could listen to drunk people's insecurities all night. She dug her claws into the carpet, stretching her feet and toes, and headed to her 'closet.' By closet, of course, she meant a huge pile of folded clothes messily thrown out all over the end table. She shivered with the anxiety of uncleanliness.

Typically, Eve was a very organized person, but the last few days had been kind of a whirlwind.

"Loomy- I swear to you, I will figure out a place for all this mess the SECOND I have time. It's driving me nuts and I can't imagine what it's like for you."

Lumina glanced over from her bedroom doorway and shrugged, "Doesn't bother me. Have you seen my bedroom?"

"You mean that tornado of a mess you had in your room last time was a normal thing?"

"Nope. That's my whole life." Lumina laughed, "No time to clean."

Evelynn shrugged, thinking about all the times she caught Lumina not doing anything

important. It's not my place, she thought. "That's fair." Evelynn grabbed her bar uniform and walked down the short hall to the bathroom.

The skimpy top laced up the front most of her torso and back were exposed, and her boobs were pressed tightly into an upward position. It always took a minute for Eve to get the top to sit the right way- too lose and her D-sized boobs hung low and exposed, too tight and they looked squished and she couldn't breathe. When she finally got it to sit the way she liked, she moved onto her shorts. They were skimpy and just short of being non-existent, as per usual at slinky bars like 'Tails.' She moved onto her leg and arm wraps. They laced up, much like her top, and her long fur peaked through the lace. Typically Eve wore wraps around her feet and ankles while she was out in public, but the amount of extra tips she made for her huge paws was well worth skipping that step.

Next, she addressed her face, lining her green eyes with a thick layer of eye liner and covered her eyelashes in mascara. She roughed up her hair in an attempt to make it look sexier, but it was a lost cause. Her thick hair fell back into its original position without a seconds' hesitation. She gave up, throwing it into a high ponytail instead.

"You almost done in there? I've got to shower."

Evelynn opened the door to be met with a fist raised in the air, "Hey! You can have the bathroom, there's no need to get violent."

Lumina chuckled, dropping her fist, "I was starting to think you fell asleep in there."

Rolling her eyes, Eve grabbed her clothes from the floor and walked back to the living room. As she looked around for a place to put her dirty clothes, the plain beige walls caught her attention. "Loomy, why don't you decorate this place?"

"Don't feel like it!" The muffled response came from the back just as the water started up.

Evelynn turned her mouth to the side, in thought, I can really make this place feel like home.

Eve walked through the front doors of Tails, immediately greeted by the smell of stale beer and greasy food. A couple of regulars waved hello as she walked towards the back to set her things down. She shoved her purse and other miscellaneous items into a cubby and made her way back up towards the bar. The place was a little busy for the time of day, and Evelynn was instantly put to work.

"Hello!" She put on her 'waitress' smile and approached a couple who had just sat down at the bar, "How're we doing today?"

"We'll take 2 tall pup lights."

We're great, thanks, how're you? Evelynn resisted the urge to roll her eyes, "No problem." Evelynn was an expert when it came to keeping up her 'fake' face. She spun around, and walked over to pour the beers.

"Thank god you're here." Evelynn's work wife, Zee, walked up, "I haven't had a second to myself all day."

"Why are we so busy?" Eve finished pouring the beers and turned back towards the guests, setting them down in front of them, "Would we like some menus?"

The couple exchanged a glance.

"Okay... well... let me know what you guys decide." Eve stifled a laugh at how awkward they were being.

Zee furrowed her brow and looked around, doing a once over on all of her guests, "I don't know why we're so busy, and I'm not complaining, but I am beat. Do you wanna take over my people?"

Eve shrugged, "That's fine. You really don't want to see if they're going to cash out soon?"

Zee shook her head, "No. I'm over it."

"Okay." Eve shrugged, beginning to introduce herself, and let the quests know that Zee was heading home for the day. Most of them didn't even know she was a different bartender, let alone care. There were the rare few that reached into their wallets and held out cash to Zee, but it was polite at best. Zee finished up a few things to help Evelynn out, but soon left her to her own devices. Eve moved flawlessly through the restaurant, making sure everyone was well taken care of.

The rest of the night was pretty uneventful, typical busy-ness, typical money and typical customers. When everything had begun to wind down, a familiar face came into 'tails.' A face that sent a shiver down Eve's back.

"Hello Evelynn." The raspy voice cut through the mostly empty bar.

Eve froze in place, the towel in her hand falling to the floor, "Eric," the sound came out a whisper.

"Hey baby. Where have you been? I've been looking all over for you." Eric stumbled a little, clearly drunk.

"I want you to leave."

"Awh come on, don't be like that," He pretended to pout, stumbling the rest of the way to the bar. He leaned against it for support, trying to look smooth and sexy, but failing miserably, "I know you miss me."

"Leave. Or I'll call the cops." Evelynn took a few steps back, towards where she kept her cell phone.

Eric stood up, sobering up a little bit as anger raged through him, "Oh, cut it out, you whore. Stop pretending you don't like me, and get your ass over here."

Eve looked around for anyone that might be able to help, but everyone had cashed out and left. Great, "I don't want anything to do with you, Eric."

"Quit lying! What did I tell you about liars?" Eric shoved a chair and it made a loud scraping noise across the floor.

"I'm NOT lying." Her voice got louder and suddenly she was thankful for the empty restaurant. She sighed, trying to calm herself down, and took a step forward "I'm living with Lumina now and I want you to leave. I never want to see you again."

His expression softened, and her reached out, grazing her arm, "Oh, baby, you don't know do you?"

"Know what?"

"Lumina doesn't want you living with her. She has her own problems, she doesn't have time to help with yours."

"Now who's lying?"

"Oh, baby, You're in too deep to see it... who do you think told me you were here?"

"Lumina would never..."

Eric reached into the back pocket of his tight jeans, and pulled out his phone. After pushing a few buttons he revealed a screen showing 10 missed calls from Lumina, and one that had been answered, "I want you back. I'd be nothing without you."

Evelynn choked, her eyes flooding with tears.

"Won't you come home to me? I'll take care of you." It seemed as if a lightbulb suddenly went on in Eric's head, "I've got a surprise for you."

"I really don't know..."

"I promise... I'll never touch you again, baby, let me prove to you I can change. I'm sorry."

The tears couldn't stop now, "How can I believe you?"

"Because you know how I feel about liars." His smile went wide, all of his teeth showing.

"Evelynn...?" her manager walked out into the dining room, "What's going on?"

"Oh, nothing. He's just leaving." Evelynn smiled, wiping her eyes quickly.

"You better not be mistreating the guests, Evelynn. You know this place runs on customer recommendations. Don't be scaring off business with personal things."

"Sorry Mel."

"Don't let it happen again." Mel turned towards the door, pulling out the key, "You get out of here, It's time for us to lock up." She motioned for Eric to move it.

He looked back at Evelynn, pleading with his eyes as he inched out. Evelynn nodded, silently agreeing to meeting him after she got off.

"Keep your drama out of here or you'll be out of a job. Boys mean trouble, I thought you knew that." Mel shook her head as she walked back towards the office, "Hurry up and finish your shit."

Eve rolled her eyes, her boss was an asshole sometimes, but she meant well. She moved on to taking care of her closing duties, but she felt as if her mind was somewhere else. Her mind kept drifting to when she lived with Eric. They had a lot of good times, and he DID take care of her, maybe she shouldn't give up on him so easily. Isn't that what relationships are about? You gotta work hard to have good things, even in things that you love. Nothing comes too easily.

Eve nodded to herself as she walked out of Tails for the night, the cool air hitting her face, it's the right thing to do. I need to see Eric.
