A few months later ALex was out of the ICU adjusting to his new life with less vision then before."
"Damn it! Can't even read the textbook in large print any more." Alex howled sitting in the Library after lunch, as I sat there going over notes for 5th period Biology class, the volume on my earphones only half way up, so I could hear ALex. "Well if you'd use text to speech or recorded books, you wouldn't have to strain your eyes so much." I scolded him for the 100th time.
"I know Roe, but I can't stand the robotic voices like you." He whined back at me. "THere are more natural sounding voices, have you tried changing the voice on NVDA?" I asked trying to give suggestions. "Yeah I have but even they sound robotic to me, are the recorded textbooks any better?" He asked, as I heard him trying to change settings on his laptop, and then currsing when he couldn't remmember the keystrokes to bring up the main menu and the other keystrokes for a quick adjustment to voice settings. "Babe, its NVDA + N, arrow down to General , then voice settings, that combobox comes up select the synthesizer, then go back to voices and then change the voice." I explained.
"Stupid screen reader!" Alex growld at the laptop, Connor's cowbell jinling as he raised his head to stare at Alex's growling.. Connor settled back down with Ace, Alex's new guide dog, a german Shepard, with a black and white coat, who was enjoying the quick catnap while we were trying to study for 5th period. Both the boys suddenly jumped up their bells going crazy at the sudden movement low growls sounding from their throats.
I could hear at a distance, Jonathan and his asshole crew chatting up the librarian's student assistant. James asking her out for a Friday night date.
"Grab your shit babe, and let's go." I said quickly to Alex, as I heard him close his laptop and shove it in his bag and got up quick, taking Ace's handle in hand as we made a quick escape.
We ran out of the Library , waving a quick hurried goodbye to the librarian. We where down the hall, just a few doors down from Biology class breathing heavy hands on knees.
"What Jonathan and his asshole friends?" ALex asked, as I modded in reply. "Roe can't see you mod for shit now remember?"
"Oh yeah, it was them." I said , trying to remember to speak more with Alex's new worse vision. THe boys pressed against our legs, their panting felt against us. Soon it died down as we went in 5th period Biology, taking our seats at the front of the room, pulling out laptops for taking and recording notes.
The day ended with no further incidences of Jonathan and his asshole friends. We were walking down the street in front of WolfMoores', ALex still kinda jumpy when we were near Wolfmoores' , but it was the only place in town for pet supplies like dog and cat food. other wise one would have to drive hour and a half to a larger town over.
We made it pass without Alex having a Panic attack, heading to my place to study for a up coming test in history. We got back soon after and finished studying, so I helped Alex with his non-Visual travel skills, after all it was better to learn non-Visual travel skills from another blind person. We practiced echo location, and understanding to read traffic patterns..
After two hours of this we threw in the towel and headed bak inside to my room and collapsed on my bed tired.. I turned on Netflix and just laid with Alex and the boys enjoying the down time.
