#2 of Little Beirut | Season 1

It's just a prank, bro! Nichola's casual spin on Will's undiplomatic response to a very bad prank turns into a much bigger story than anyone had anticipated. Meanwhile, it's date night. What's normally an excuse to get out of the house and have a little fun doesn't exactly go as anyone planned. It was certainly never meant to end covered in mud at the bottom of a hill.

Once she was settled, Will took the straw from her and snorted the other line, taking two deep breaths to try to get the powder as deep into his sinuses as he could. He shook his head as well, but with his ears being much smaller than Penny's, he didn't do anywhere near as much damage to her car.

"Now we're both out," he said roughly, closing up the tin and handing it back to her.

Penny took it and hid it back under her seat. While she stashed it, Will picked up his burger again and bit off half of what was remaining. It was a mistake. His senses were overwhelmed by all the salt and grease and sawdust beef, and he had to fight to not choke on it. As he struggled with it, headlights lit up the parking area from behind them. Will leaned out of his open door to find a police cruiser stopping about ten feet behind them. With his mouth full of a burger his body couldn't decide if it wanted to reject or assimilate, all Will was able to do was mumble at the cop as he stepped out onto the pavement.

"What are we doing up here?" he asked, shining his light right in Will's face. There was no way he could have missed Will halfway choking on his food.

"We're just having dinner," Penny said loudly enough to be heard.

The cop stepped close enough to see inside the car. Will didn't miss the trail the husky's flashlight took, over Will's lap, and then onto Penny's body, making sure they both had their clothes on and buttoned. "Why out here?" he asked, looking directly at Will. "Is everything all right?"

"We work at the KARP building," Penny said sweetly. "It's been a busy week. We were just looking for somewhere quiet to eat."

The cop nodded slowly. Still looking right at Will, he sniffed the air. Luckily, he was just a beat cop, and cringed at the overwhelming stench of fast food. "The park closes in an hour," he said, nodding again. "Make sure you're out by then."

Will nodded. It was bullshit, and he knew it. Mt Tabor had signs posted everywhere, and they still had a good couple of hours before the gates closed.

"We will. Thank you," Penny said.

The cop slowly got back into his car, taking his sweet time to finally pull around in the small parking area and head back down the hill. By then, Will finally managed to chew through the disgusting mess in his mouth and swallow it. "That fucker followed us up here," he said, watching the cop slowly drive away.

"God, good thing he was slow about it," Penny said. If he'd been any more obvious about tailing them, he'd have walked right into them clearing out Penny's stash.

Will stuffed the rest of the burger into his mouth and got out of the car, taking a moment to enjoy the cool breeze that blew through his fur. He walked across the narrow strip of pavement to the edge, peering through the trees at the neighbourhood lights at the bottom of the hill. He wondered how much noise travelled down there. There were enough trees and thick brambles between them that he thought it probably blocked out most of the noise, but living right on the edge of a public park seemed like it would be the worst place in the world to live. He bounced up and down on his feet, eager to find something to do. Restlessness was rapidly turning into a feeling of cabin fever. Will needed to do something. Anything. And that started with swallowing the last of his disgusting dinner.

This was not the place to be when he felt like this.

"Give me your keys," he said, turning back around.

"Absolutely not," Penny said, still behind the wheel of her car. "You've already wrecked one car this week. You're not wrecking mine too."

"I was rear-ended," Will defended. "Let's go up the Gorge or something. Less cops out there."

"I'm going up the fucking Gorge," Penny argued. "We can do that when it's your car."

Will did not want to stand in some tiny parking lot on Mt Tabor arguing about what to do. He wanted to go do something. "Let's go up Twenty-Six then. Probably even less cops."

"And do what? There's nothing to see. It's dark!" Penny argued. "Everything's closed except the strip clubs. If you're that bored, go get a gluten-free lap dance."

Will grumbled, hating that idea more than he'd hated an idea in a long time. They were getting loud. Will turned around to look at the neighbourhood below again, as headlights flashed back up the hill. He turned too quickly, over-corrected, and stepped onto soft earth on the edge. His foot slipped out from under him, and the rest of him quickly followed down the steep drop. He heard Penny shout his name from above, but not much else as he tumbled through thick brambles, and stopped against something hard and sharp and entirely unwelcoming. When he looked up, there was no sign of any headlights on the road above. Just overcast sky, reflecting smudged shades of orange and purple back at him.
